If you blink you might just miss it. It is tucked in between Boyd and Main Street where the trees turn colors in the fall, shed them in the winter and bloom in the spring. Close to where kids play soccer, kickball and baseball. It may sit in a quiet part of the sur-rounding neighborhood in Lions Park, but ever since the firehouse turned art center was established in 1971, the Norman Firehouse Art Center has created a buzz in Norman, OK. “Create, innovate and play,”
said Douglas Shaw Elder, Executive Director of the Norman Firehouse Art Center. “That is our catch-phrase.”
Since 1971, the Norman Firehouse Art Center has served Norman and the surrounding communities with award winning visual arts educa-tion for all ages and gallery exhibits of the highest quality. The faculty and staff teach ceramics, sculpting,
painting and drawing, jewelry design, stone carving, fused glass and more, in fully equipped class-rooms.“Every year we have 800 adults and 500 kids that take our classes,” said Elder. The art center has classes for every age and every type of artist whether you are a beginner or an expert. This spring they also have events outside of the art center. Coming up on January 30 is the 2016 Chocolate Festival held at the Marriott Conference Center and Hotel at the NCED. The festival features thousands of sweets from 20 different vendors including Amy Cakes, La Baguette Bakery and Cafe, and the Candy Basket. People who purchased a ticket will be allowed to sample a variety of treats from 10:30am to 2pm. Along with the Chocolate Festival, the art center also reaches out to the community by con-necting with our elementary schools.
“Since 2007, we have worked with over 17,000 children within the schools,” said Elder. “We have been full-time at Jackson for four years and now we have moved to Lincoln.” The art center’s goal is to provide children with a quality art education by helping them build both basic and advanced think-ing skills, and promote diverse methods of thinking and learning. By connecting with the community outside of the art cen-ter’s walls, the Norman Firehouse Art Center hopes to bring the community together and enrich the lives of Norman with apprecia-tion of the arts. “We cannot provide our community with anything with-out the support and the positive influence from not only the city of Norman, but also from the parks and recreation department,” said Elder. “We appreciate everything you do.” For more information on the Norman Firehouse Art Center, their classes and events visit them at 444 South Flood Ave., nor-manfirehouse.com, on Facebook at facebook.com/NormanFirehou-seArtCenter, on Twitter at @normanfirehouse or on Instagram at @normanfirehouse.
The Norman Firehouse Art Center enriches our community by offering the highest quality visual arts education, experiences and exhibits.
FIREHOUSE ART CENTERBy: Natalie Davis, Norman Parks & Recreation
Directly inside the Norman Fire-house Art Center is their gift shop gallery where there are pieces for sale from over twenty Oklahoma
artists as well as students.
Even though the building is now the Norman Fire
House Art Center, it used to be a firehouse. Parts of the
firehouse such as the garage doors are still seen behind
surrounding pieces.

During the 2015 Summer Season there were numerous conversations with coaches and parents regarding their experience over the years with the City of Norman Youth Baseball and Softball. There were many compliments directed at the recreational aspect of the league while concerns were being directed towards the absence of a competitive level option and the residency restriction. Following the conclusion of the 2015 Spring/Summer season, two advisory boards were created to evaluate and discuss ways to enhance the current structure of the City of Norman Youth Baseball and Softball Program. After meetings, various discussions, and research, it became clear that the City of Norman Youth Baseball and Softball Program is ready to expand its level of skill development and quality competition. On Thursday, November 5, 2015 the City of Norman Board of Parks Commissioners voted unanimously to move forward with the proposed changes: · Implement rules that more closely resemble that of regulation baseball and fast-pitch softball.· Remove the residency restriction to allow teams outside of Norman to participate.· Add more regular season games to the machine pitch and kid pitch divisions.· Offer to two leagues for all kid pitch divisions: Recreational and Competitive. · Add a 14U division for baseball and possibly fast-pitch softball. · Begin the season in early/mid-April. · Hire certified umpires to officiate all kid pitch games. While the proposed changes have been met with support, coaches and parents who have voiced their support understand that improving the overall quality of the program will involve an increase in costs. For all leagues, the registration fees include umpire fees and game balls. Though there is a substantial increase in the Machine Pitch and Kid Pitch division, the City of Norman will continue to relieve coaches and parents from having to come up with additional funds to cover umpire fees and/or game balls. Financial Assistance for those who are on School Free Meal Plans and sibling discounts are available to those who qualify. There is much excitement about the upcoming season!
