OUR RECENT NEWS

MEMBERSHIP

We presently have 25 members.

We welcome Bruce Groenewald to our Club. He was inducted by Lion Tim Powell and sponsored by David Meehan. We do hope that he will find the experience rewarding and has already assisted us at the Churchlands P.S. breakfast and sausage sizzles.

Unfortunately Jerry Hooper has resigned from our Club due to health reasons. Jerry has assisted us at sausage sizzles, taken on coordinator of selling of Christmas cakes and has helped out at the City to Surf and other projects. Thank you Jerry for all you have done for the Club.

We held a Membership Drive and Information night in September. Many of our members dropped flyers into letterboxes in the Duncraig area. Our Club members will continue to promote the Club as much as they can. Thank you to David Meehan for organising this, Louise Sims for printing out the flyers and members who walked the streets. We will do it again in March.

Louise Sims has been awarded a Centennial Membership Award presented to her by our President

BUNNINGS SAUSAGE SIZZLES

Doug Anderson is our hero – he continues as our sausage sizzle co-ordinator and is doing a magnificent job organising the sausage sizzles at Bunnings Innaloo, Whitfords and Osborne Park. We are grateful to Doug and to all of our members who have assisted. The proceeds enable us to donate to so many good causes.

A happy crew at Bunnings Osborne Park.

TRIGG ISLAND LIFE SAVING SURF CLUB/CENTENNIAL LEGACY PROJECT

The Patrol Tent is now being used by Trigg Island Life Saving Surf Club . It is providing much needed shelter from the weather for members. Our thanks to Jackie Eley, the Promotions and Marketing Officer of Trigg Island Life Saving Surf Club and David Bryant who helped to make this all happen.

CITY TO SURF

Each Year we brave the cold at McLean Park, Floreat to marshall the runners and walkers at the City to Surf Event. It was an early start to the day but very rewarding. Thanks Tim Powell for co-ordinating our participation in this Event.

WALKATHONThis was the first time we organised a Walk-a-thon. Marita Keenan did a fantastic job organising the event at the Carine Reserve. We thank VDG Luen Chicote for attending and supporting us and our friends at Duncraig Lions for joining us in the walk. We also thank all of the walkers and their sponsors. We raised money for the Carine Riding for the Disabled. We are hoping to do this again in 2018. Our hope is that more Lions members, friends and family members will join us in 2018.

LIONS HEARING BUS

Elaine spotted the Lions Hearing Bus at ECU Mt Lawley campus last year. They were there as part of ECU’s Health and Wellness Expo checking the hearing of both staff and students. Our Lions from various Clubs do a fantastic job volunteering for the Hearing Bus. Our member Cheryl Meehan (in the photo) was on duty that day. It is a great

MARITA TRAVELLED TO GERMANY

Our members love to travel and Marita Keenan is no exception. She travelled recently to the Black Forest in Germany. She visited one of the Lions Clubs during her travels. THE BIG WALK FOR THE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL FOUNDATION (PMH)

Elaine helped out at the Big Walk marshalling the walkers in East Perth. On the day, the organisers were short of marshalls so fortunately Elaine was able to help out at short notice. It was impressive the number of walkers that took part in the Event. It is certainly an Event worth supporting whether you are a participant, sponsor or volunteer. Let’s look out for it next year.

CHRISTMAS CAKE SALES

Our Club would like to give a huge THANK YOU to David Bryant our Co-ordinator for our Christmas cake sales. There was a massive amount of organisation and hours involved by him. Robert Bates assisted him so we thank you Robert for your time and help. Members well done selling at the various outlets – it was very successful.

Thank you to Gregory’s Meat and Poultry at Karrinyup Shopping Centre for selling large amounts of Christmas cakes for us, also to the Mt Lawley and Gwelup Hearing Clinics and Ginette Derby for organising the selling of cakes at the Trigg Medical Centre.

It was a great effort by all involved.

We are looking forward to hearing more about this team as they progress through their competition in 2018 and the following two years. Elaine and Jeanette presented a cheque to the team at the Carine Reserve.

CHURCHLANDS PRIMARY SCHOOL FATHER’S DAY BREAKFAST

Our members cooked up an amazing breakfast for Dads and sons at Churchlands Primary School to celebrate Father’s Day. It was an early start for Doug Anderson and his breakfast crew. It is the first time that we have volunteered at Churchlands Primary School and we hope as a Club we can assist again in the future.

ROCKY BAY DUNCRAIG

We have donated $500 to Rocky Bay Duncraig to enable them to buy additional equipment.

The Lions Club of North Beach presented school awards “People helping People” at

the end of last year to North Beach Primary, Marmion Primary, Our Lady of Grace, Gwelup Primary and Sacred Heart College. These awards were well received by the schools.

The award was to identify children who consistently demonstrate: Hard work in class, making the most of their abilities Steady progress towards personal learning goals He/she is a true and worthy role model for other students Care and consideration for others Obedience of class and school rules

The awardees are students who rarely, if ever, receive recognition for excellence or high achievement but nonetheless continue to give of their best.

Jeanette Simpson and David Meehan went to all the year-end assemblies to present these awards.

LIONS SAVE SIGHT FOOTY TIPPING COMPETITION 2018

Elaine administered the Lions Save Sight Footy Tipping Competition for 2017. This competition will be held again in 2018. Elaine is hoping to obtain more entries in the competition this year. Last year’s winner was Broome Lions Club. The $500 they won was donated to purchase equipment for a disabled person. $555 was also donated to Lions Save Sight.

YOUTH OF THE YEAR 2018

Our Youth of the Year for 2017 was a resounding success. We are now in the process of organising Youth of the Year for 2018. Donna Hooper and Carmel Ward from Duncraig Lions are presently organising our Club Youth of the Year Event to be held on 28th February.

We congratulate Connor Patton our finalist from 2017 – he was selected to attend the Lions YOTY camp at Rotorua in New Zealand and Cairns. We look forward to hearing about his experiences.

DG VISIT

Page 20: North Beach · Web viewUnfortunately Jerry Hooper has resigned from our Club due to health reasons. Jerry has assisted us at sausage sizzles, taken on coordinator of selling of Christmas

We would like to thank DG Sue Lowe and also Alan Lowe for visiting our Club in October. As they are both Charter Members of our North Beach Lions Club, it is always great to welcome them both back for a visit. Thank you Sue for your presentation and for the message and video from the International President. As a result of the information given to us, we have donated $100 to the LCIF Measles Campaign. It must be an incredibly time consuming task for Sue and Alan to visit all of the Clubs in the District and our Club very much appreciates their dedication and the work they have done for the District.

SOCIAL NIGHTS

We do enjoy a night out together for our Social Nights. Usually a 4th Wednesday in the

month. If anyone would like to join us on our Social Nights please contact our Club if you would like further information.

Let us keep working together to achieve for our Community.
