As I write this, 2013 is on its way out and 2014 on its way in.January 1st is nearly here. The day that many of us set goals and make plans in the hope things may go better for us inthe coming year than the year before. I want to focus on business plans, things that are often a bit more involved than the typical New Year’s Resolution.

A goal for the New Year could be a small but important change in the way that you conduct business. For example, if you run a retail store you may decide to make the commitment to make sure that every customer who enters your business is greeted right away when they walk in the door. This seems simple, but when you really look at it, you need to have a plan in place and make sure your employees buy into doing this in a professional way. A great example of this being well executed in our town is Ace Hardware of North Branch. Every time that I go into that store I am greeted by an employee who asks me what they can help me with. When I tell them what I am looking for, they take me to the area of the store where they have the product that I want and help me to select the item that best ts my needs. They have steps in place to make sure that customers are rst greeted pleasantly and than are helped by a represent-ative that can get them the right product for the job at hand. Ace Hardware in North Branch has really done a great job getting a sales process in place that makes the customer feel welcome and also helps them to get the right product.

Maybe you have the goal of growing your business and even adding on additional employees. This is much more involved than making a process change. By adding additional employees you are taking on a risk by increasing your payroll in the hopes that your business will increase. Your new employee is taking a risk with you. When you hire someone, that new employee is counting on you to provide a stable work environment. The person that you hire is relying on you to make sound business decisions. You need to have a plan in place to help you make sure that you are successful.

When coming up with goals for the New Year I encourage you to challenge yourself, but to be realistic. Change is hard. It can be dicult to get buy in from your employees and coworkers. You may want to make changes in steps, instituting a portion of your plan each quarter of 2014. Lastly, do not be afraid to make changes to your plan. Sometimes things just do not work out as we think they will. Be exible and ready to adapt to what comes your way.

As I have mentioned before, I believe that you are always either going forward improving your business or you are going backward. It is not possible to stay the same. It is up to you to make sure that your business is heading in the right direction for 2014.

I wish you a prosperous and productive 2014.
