If the Aggiettes are to win this tournament, they're certainly going to need some high scoringgames from Johnson. The Aggiettes don't have alot of high scorers. They do have an excellent pointguard in Marsha Simmons. Simmons has speed, quickness, and outstanding hands, which are allnecessary qualities in a point guard.

Champions to the NCAATournament is no doubt amajor step towardincorporating BlackInstitutions into the "lavishmoney making machine" forNCAA Division I Athletics. Some of the coaches of theMEAC gave their views onwhat the NCAA Tournamentmeans for the MEAC.

A.B. Williamson, HowardUniversity's basketball coach(a graduate of A&T and coachof the year in the MEAC lastyear), said, "The automaticbid to the NCAA Tournamentwill allow the MEAC toshowboat some of its athletesand give them nationalexposure." Can the MEACteams compete with the teamsthat may be in the NCAATournament? "Talent wisemy teams can compete withany team in the country,"Williamson responded.

Don Corbett, A&T'sbasketball coach, said at thebeginning of the season, "Theautomatic berthof the NCAATournament will no doubtgive the players an addedincentive." At a recent pressconference in Winston-Salem,Corbett said, "Everybody isgoing to be fired up for thatautomatic berth, everybodywants to be the first team torepresent the conference(MEAC), and this is themotivation. I really don'tknow if there is a real value inwinning the regular seasonchampionship."

Probably, the mostrecognized benefit from theNCAA Tournament is therevenues received fromtelevision and gates, which aredistributed to the schoolsparticipating. "It alsoenhances the conference in thefact that it brings more capitaland more publicity and allthese things create a betterconference," Jones said.Jones said, "This willallow usto get better athletes and, when you get better athletes, you compete better."

Many think that inauguralof the MEAC Champions tothe NCAA Tournament willattract "blue chip" ballplayers. Ken Free, commissioner of the MEAC,said, "We already have bluechip players; it's a matter ofexposure; the NCAATournament will give us thatexposure."

Johnny Jones, headbasketball coach at SouthCarolina State (the newestcoach in the MEAC), said,"When you talk about anNCAA berth it has a heckuvaeffect on the ball players andmore so on the conference."Jones said, "It means that youcan bring a kid in and say,'Hey, you can compete in thebig tournament and have achance to win an NCAAChampionship' (referring tothe potential the automaticberth will bring the MEACrecruiting efforts)."

SPORTS REPORTBy Raymond Moody

The Aggiettes, in 1981, have a record of 19-14 andthis record improves Aggiette coach Joyce Spruill'soverall coaching record at A&T to 91-49.

The Aggiettes won their first-round game in theNCAIAW division II basketball tournament which isbeing played in Hickory. They whipped UNC-Wilmington 62-53 and now must play the number-one seed, Lenoir-Rhyne.

But the Aggiettes weren't expected to do so wellin 1981. After all, last season marked the end of thecollegiate basketball career of Mamie Jones, whoholds every Aggiette career record exceptrebounding.
