The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose

PURPOSE is to know God and to experience freedom as whole

persons through Jesus Christ, to develop a creative, supportive

fellowship, and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.

Chair of Nominations ~ Jean Haddock

Greetings,

I have just returned from National Seminar! This event was an educational and spiritual

experience. “Interrupting Indifference--Jesus, Justice and Joy” was this year’s theme. We

explored the life and ministry of Jesus as he worked to change society around him. This

event was filled with workshops, speakers, roundtable discussions, a town hall forum, a day

of action, and worship. The four justice priorities are Climate Justice, Maternal Health, Mass

Incarceration, and Economic Inequality. I look forward to sharing and teaching what I

learned with all of you. We are planning a fantastic Conference United Methodist Women Annual Meeting this year!!

Annual Meeting will be held on October 10, 2015 at Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC.

This years’ host district is the Corridor District. The speaker will be Rev. Jeanne Neal, Pastor

of Haw River UMC and a long-time friend of UMW. The Registrar is Martha Caves. Early

registration has been extended to September 1, 2015. All email and registration information

is on the registration form available @ nccumw.org and page 7 of this KEDE. We are asking that you bring your own bag in support of our GO GREEN Campaign to

promote and facilitate reusing. There will be a minimum amount of bags on hand for our

first-time attendees and others who did not bring a bag. In recent years we have experienced declining attendance at Annual Meeting. Please

promote this meeting in your District and local units. Plan to attend and bring someone with

As of this writing, I am praying that Committees on Nomination are filling in their slates for

2016 at all levels, and that the women whom God is calling to serve in the mission of United

Methodist Women are saying an eager, “Yes!” On the Conference level, we are continuing to praise God for

our nominees: JoAnn Barbour for President, Sandra Mendel

for Secretary, Linda Sellers on the Committee on

Nominations, as is Winda Mitchell. Nominated for a second

term are Annette Wright, Program Resource Coordinator

and the others on the leadership team are completing their

terms.

At all times, I am praying for and thinking about United Methodist Women. I often watch the Inspiration channel. Each

time I hear a sermon and a particular point of the sermon grasps my attention, I always attempt to apply it to United

Methodist Women. I want to share 3 things that I have heard recently and how we can apply it to our mission work.

1. The pastor’s words were “Don’t raise an offering, raise a vision.” For United Methodist Women, I modified it

to “Don’t just lift up the pledge, lift up the vision/purpose of United Methodist Women.” It is said that people

join organizations because of their cause/purpose. We have a great purpose! I share with women that the

vision of United Methodist Women is to empower and educate women to help bring about God’s kingdom of

abundant life. Not only do we carry out acts of mercy, but we do social justice work to make systemic change

to improve the lives of women, children and youth. United Methodist Women members’ voices are heard

around the world as we call for justice on issues such as immigration, human trafficking, domestic violence,

health care and the environment. United Methodist Women are faith, hope and love in action. Always be

ready to share your vision of United Methodist Women with women in your church and community.

2. The pastor presented a question for the congregation to consider. The question: “Is my attitude worth

catching?” I pose the following questions: “Are you passionate about United Methodist Women?” “Do you

reflect joy when sharing United Methodist Women?” “Does your passion about United Methodist Women

invite others to belong?” People join organizations that are passionate about their mission and vision. As you

seek to bring new women into our wonderful organization, do so with an attitude of joy and be passionate

about the work that God accomplishes through United Methodist Women.

3. Another word that resonated with me was “Make a commitment to work hard. If it is to be it’s up to me.” In

1869, when our founding members committed to sending two missionaries to India, they worked hard to

bring it to fruition. They committed to praying for God’s help. They committed to giving sacrificially to the

cause. Our foremothers lived out the statement “If it is to be it’s up to me.” They believed that they could

make it happen and indeed they did.

Our organization is a product of faith. In 1869, six women in Boston heard the story of the plight of women in India.

Mrs. William Butler and Mrs. Edwin Parker, wives of missionaries to India, were home on furlough. They spoke to a

group of women at Tremont Church in Boston. Mrs. Butler told about the desperate spiritual and physical needs of

women in India. Below is an excerpt from The Story of the Woman’s Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist

Episcopal Church, 1869-1895.

“Mrs. Parker expressed her deep conviction that unless Christian women took up this work as a special and

separate duty, it would not be practicable to evangelize India to any great extent. Women alone could have

access to women. The question was then raised whether something could not be done to meet this state of things, if the New

England ladies of the church would take it up. Mrs. Butler then described what the ladies of the Congregational

Churches had done in the line of organizing a society, and turning to Mrs. Flanders, she said, ‘Mrs. Parker and I

would like to see a Women’s Foreign Missionary Society in our Methodist Episcopal Church. Can not you help us?’

Mrs. Flanders replied: ‘If others can do this, the women of the Methodist Episcopal Church can, and it is clearly

their duty to engage in this important work. The society was established, and earnest work and earnest prayer soon extended its influence in all the churches

around. Love and zeal deepened as the work was laid upon the Churches. The method adopted for raising funds

and prosecuting the work of the Society was not by pubic collections for special work, but by every Christian

woman laying aside two cents a week, or the payment of one dollar a year, which should constitute membership.

So small was the amount that all women, even the humble, could have a share in the work.”

We have inherited a wonderful legacy of women committed to working hard, praying fervently, giving sacrificially to

support mission and working to be inclusive of all women. As we march forward to our 150th anniversary, we have an opportunity to ensure our legacy continues. United

Methodist Women is celebrating its 150th Anniversary by strengthening and passing on its mission inheritance with

The Legacy Fund. The forward - looking permanent endowment will provide a firm foundation for generations of United

Methodist Women to come as they engage in mission with the women, children and youth of their day. You are invited

and encouraged to support the ongoing work of our organization through supporting our Legacy Fund. Let us be committed with faith, hope and love in action, to strengthen United Methodist Women in our local churches.

Remember, that with God, all things are possible.

National Seminar is an opportunity for United Methodist Women members

to explore God's actions in the current moment in the world and dialogue

about how to respond. Each Annual Conference sent two United Methodist

Women to this event. Our attendees were Daisy Dye, Conference Vice

President and Amanda Clark, a young woman. Two other attendees from

our conference were Patty Stricklin, SEJ UMW President and Elizabeth

Lowery. Elizabeth was the SEJ UMW scholarship recipient. Webinars from National Seminar are available on the United Methodist

Women’s website. The three webinars are on Mass Incarceration 101,

Climate Justice and Maternal Health. Our own Katey Zeh is one of the

leaders for the Maternal Health webinar.

Treasurer’s Report ~ Doris Wade

Daisy Dye National Seminar was an educational and spiritual

experience. The theme of the 2015 National Seminar was

“Interrupting Indifference: Jesus, Justice and Joy.” Each

day started with a lesson exploring the life and ministry of

Jesus as he worked to change society around him. It helped

me to understand the connection between the United

Methodist Women and the communities around us. The

four justice priorities are climate justice, maternal health,

mass incarceration, and economic inequality. These are all

issues I am very familiar with, however, I was not looking

at them from a biblical standpoint. Also, I was not aware

of just how much I can do along with the sisterhood of the

United Methodist Women to bring about change. There

were speakers, round table discussions, a town hall forum,

workshops, and a day of action where we visited a local

Church and participated in an event to bring about change

in a Chicago community. This seminar also provided us

with tools and resources to develop the skills of our local

UMW. I am excited and ready to advocate!!

Amanda Clark I had a wonderful time at National Seminar! There were a

few hundred ladies there from all across the USA, all with

varying cultural and racial backgrounds--we were a

beautifully diverse crowd! Each day we began with a time

of music and worship, then moved into having workshops

and meetings to learn about the core issues: maternal

health, climate justice, mass incarceration, and

oppression. I was a Sociology major in college so I am very

familiar with these issues and the fight for social justice

from an academic and activist standpoint. However, it was

wonderful to be able to connect my faith with these issues.

On our last full day, we did site visits in the local

community to get a hands on, live experience with the

issues we had been discussing all week... that was my

favorite part! It's nearly impossible to sum up everything

about National Seminar in one paragraph. It was a

fantastic experience and I got to know many other

wonderful women of faith. I will remember these women

and the things we learned that week for a long time to

come!

Our year is more than half over. WE have a wonderful opportunity to be in Mission for GOD! Women, youth, and

children are depending upon US. Our pledge money is coming in slowly. Remember to use Gift to Mission Cards.

This is the time of the year to think of honoring someone with a Special Mission

Recognition pin. It is a wonderful opportunity for you to do something special

for a special friend, mentor, or leader in your church, or a great influence in your

life. It’s a win-win! You honor the special person in your life—and you

contribute to Mission Giving! The World Thank offering is a time for us to be thankful to God for all the

blessings He puts in our lives. He has been very generous to us. God loves a

Dean of Mission u ~ Martha Caves

This year will provide a wonderful opportunity for mothers and their children to enjoy different experiences at one of

United Methodist Conference Camps. We are looking forward to seeing each of you at the Retreat!

Mother - Child Retreat ~ September 18-20, 2015 ~ Camp Rockfish, Parkston, NC

This year’s Mission u is completed, and study leaders have been trained!!! We had around 80 participants in our mission

studies this year. The repeat study is “The Church and People with Disabilities,” looking at things from a global

perspective. The geographic study for 2015-2016 is “Latin America.” We offered for the first time a class in Spanish.

Anyone interested in having a class in Spanish in your district or local church can contact Martha Caves at

mcaves@nccumc.org. We also offered this class to youth who attended ACS at Methodist University. We had 6 students

participate. This, too, is the first year we have offered a mission study at ACS, and hope it will continue! Our spiritual

growth study is “Happiness.” These are all excellent studies you have in your local units in addition to them being

offered in the districts. Contact Martha Caves or your district E&I coordinator for more information. At the close of Mission u this year, I passed the reigns on to Joyce Herring who will be the Dean of Mission u for the next

2 years. Our Mission u is in good hands!!! Thank you for all the support I have received over the past few years! I look

forward to “participating” at Mission u in 2016 and beyond. Martha Caves

Program Resources Tidbits ~ Annette Wright

Our focus, as in previous years, is to increase Reading Program participants. To help achieve

this goal, books have been available at all conference events. We will have as many books as

allowed at the Annual Meeting. Stop by and visit our books sales at Annual Meeting. Again, this year, we will present Creative Unit Certificate(s) along with other reading

awards. Each District Secretary of Program Resources was asked to identify a local unit or

units that have creatively promoted reading. These units will be recognized at Annual

Meeting. I cannot wait until Annual Meeting to share with you the units to receive certificates

and to share with you the district that takes home the banner. The Capital District has held

the banner for 3 consecutive years. The Corridor District has been a repeat

winner for the district with the most children readers. Perhaps this year other districts will be recognized. It is always good to venture into a good book, so join the Leadership Team and read “Good, God, Lousy World and Me.” Remember, Gift to Mission Cards can be given on any occasion. Perhaps you could recognize a new Reading Program

participant with a Gift to Mission Card.

Social Action Blurb ~ JoAnn Stanford

Small Changes! Big Impacts! There is a lot we can do to help make our world a greener place. Not only sign the “Be a

Green Unit: Take the Pledge” but live it! We as individuals should sign the pledge as well and live it! Do not use

disposable cups, plates, and utensils if possible. Use recycled paper and recycle paper as well. Disconnect appliances

when not in use. Properly inflated tires can boost fuel efficiency. Replace light bulbs with compact fluorescent (CFLs)

or light emitting diodes (LEDs). Conserve water. The list goes on and on and on!!!

Take the pledge. Make a difference!

During the Mission Encounter at Mission u, we packed 100 health kits

(thanks to all who contributed) which were taken to Partners in Ministry,

Inc. in Pembroke. We made prayer bracelets - one to keep and one to share

with a prospective UMW member. One group visited the NC State Veterans

Home sharing God’s love with the residents. Remember you can distribute kits locally as long as at least three kits are

given to one of the designated project agencies on the Project List. Kits can

always be taken to a UMW Conference and/or District Event and given to the

social action chair. Keep a record to send to the District Social Action

Coordinator by August 15 who then reports to the Conference Social Action

Coordinator by September 1.

Recycle your old cell phones. Bring to meetings and give to the social action chair. A box will be

available for deposit at Annual Meeting. These are shared with agencies that work with domestic

violence victims. The phones are for 911 calls. Email pictures to Jin Lee (jinylee64@gmail.com) by September 1 showing your unit at work.

Include your unit and church name and the activity. She will make a power point presentation

to show during Annual Meeting at Methodist University October 10.

Gracious God, you have chosen us to bear your image and called us to care for your creation. Forgive us for being so focused

on our own needs that we have forsaken the need of a stranger. We have let our brothers and sister go hungry. We have

turned away from the poor and oppressed. Change us. Move in our hearts, so that we may extend your love, mercy, and

grace to those in need. Amen.
