STATE MOTTO
In 1893 the North Carolina General Assemblyadopted the Latin
words "Esse Quam Videri" asthe state motto.
They directed that these words be placed withthe state's Coat of
Arms and the date "20 May,1775" upon the great seal.
Until the act of 1893 North Carolina had nomotto, one of the few
states without one (andthe only one of the original thirteen).

STATE FLOWER
The Dogwood Cornus is North Carolina state
flower and one of the most prevalent flower
in North Carolina and can be found in all parts
of the State from the mountains to the coast.
Its blossoms, which appear in early spring and
continue on into summer, are most often
found in white, although shades of pink (red)are not
uncommon.

STATE TREE
The pine tree is the state tree and the mostcommon of the trees
found in North Carolina, aswell as the most important one in the
history ofour State.
During the Colonial and early Statehood periods,the pine was a
vital part of the economy of NorthCarolina.
From it came many of the "naval stores" - resin,turpentine, and
timber - needed by merchantsand the navy for their ships. The pine
hascontinued to supply North Carolina with manyimportant wood
products

DATE OF STATEHOOD
The date of statehood of North Carolina is
Nov. 21, 1789 and is the 12th of the original
13 colonies.

The nickname for North Carolina is The Old
North State or The Tar Heel State (North
Carolina's state song also has the title and
theme of Old North State).

adopted as the official state bird of North

HISTORICAL EVENTS
In the 1580s, the British established two colonies inNorth
Carolina, both of which failed. In the 1600s
permanent settlers from Virginia began to move to
North Carolina, and it eventually became part of a
British colony known as "Carolina.
The 20th century saw North Carolina transformed into
a modern state, a transformation that began when theWright
Brothers flew the first airplane in Kitty Hawk,
North Carolina in 1903.
