North Haven Yacht Club News and Views Through 2017 April Edition Winter´s Over and Summer is on it’s way! Don’t know about you but I’m always delighted to see the back of winter if for nothing else I love to see my boat bobbing on the water again. Colin and Bobi Francis took Boblin from her winter berth and headed back to North Haven and a number of boats including mine were lifted in at Salterns. So the fun begins. Colin and Bobi have put a lot of effort into rejuvenating the Fishing Section. During the winter there have been the Flounder Competitions, flounders caught each time but more than that loads of fun together. In the brief moments of inactivity (ok perhaps not brief) there were a lot of good stories and even more laughter. Now the Boat Competitions commence. The rules have been ‘polished’ and now all the boats will set off at the same time and return for the weigh in together. I did suggest a Le Mans style start with all skippers lined up in tenders… It was rejected! The first Boat Fishing comp. is Sunday 23 rd . April. Sign in at 0700 and start of the competition at 0730. Back for the weigh in by 1230. For anyone, boat fishers or not, on Wednesday 26 th . April commencing at 1800, there is a casting demonstration on the beach. Tom Bagnall from Christchurch Angling will be casting using the long and very flexible Continental casting rod. Even if you don’t beachcast it will be a fascinating evening and the demonstration will be followed by a talk in the club house.

Hard Graft… but many hands make light work

Our Mooring Officers hard atwork having been hamperedby some really bad weather

just at the time when they needed to be out there fixing them for this season. When I askedDave Segal if he still needed help, the answer was YES, but not for the heavy, dirty work.Important but easier work like changing pick-up buoys, especially if you can help duringweekdays. Contact Dave via the club’s email.

Well that’s what itfeels like from myviewpointDavid Butcher

Our Commodore, Barry Swaffield has asked me to emphasise the need toreplace the old boy who puts this together each month… well perhaps notquite in those words. It’s got nothing to do with a P45 just looking to thefuture when I’ll sadly have to sell Rafiki and become a land-lubber.

The newsletter doesn’t need to remain in this style but it does need toremain as another form of communication for the club. I’ll be around for awhile yet but we are just thinking ahead so that it continues into the future.

Talk to Barry first of all and then I’m sure he will involve me later.

One of the stands at the Club’s GoldenJubilee Weekend of 21st and 22nd February2015, was occupied by BournemouthUniversity, Marine ArchaeologyDepartment.

Exhibits from the Poole Harbour entrance,Swash Channel Wreck, were on view at theClub. Staff and students of the University, present at their stand, and all regular sub-aqua divers who had worked  on the wreck. They were able to give our members andvisitors, detailed information about theship, and it’s recovered artefacts.

Since the Club’s Open Weekend, the wreckhas been declared ‘the most significantshipwreck discovered in UK waters, sincethe ’Mary Rose’, and over sixteen hundredartefacts have so far been recovered. Thelatest and largest item recovered, is theships huge rudder, and I was fortunateenough to be invited to the unveiling of this, and other artefacts, at Poole Museum, onWednesday 22nd March 2017.

We were informed that the forty metrewooden ship, a Dutch armed merchantman, carried about thirty four cannons, andfoundered around 1630. As little wear is

evident on the rudder, she may have beenon her maiden voyage. She was bound forthe West Indies, but nothing is known abouther cargo, or the circumstances of her loss.It is thought she was named ‘Fame’

The huge hard wood rudder, measuringeight meters in length, with a stock of500mm square, is minus the blade. Thichwould have been constructed in threesections, and sheathed in copper. Recessesin the stock indicate where the massivepintels (or hinges ) were fitted. The rudderwould have been operated by a tiller bar, connected to a steering devise, by ropeblocks or sheaves. The rudder top issuperbly carved into a larger than life sizemoustached head of a merman.

The exhibits are on display at the PooleMuseum, and supported by The HeritageLottery Fund. The famous Poole HarbourIron Age Log Boat is displayed on the samefloor. A visit to the Poole Museum isrecommended. For more information, Google ‘ Poole SwashChannel Wreck’   ..

Natural England submittedStudland Bay as a proposedMARINE CONSERVATION AREAon 28 Feb 2017. It is currentlybeing considered by DEFRA andmay go for Public Consultationby September 2017 beforebecoming a MCZ in Spring 2018.

Natural England haverecommended that the wholeof Studland Bay becomes aMarine Conservation Zone asearly as Feb 2018 and DorsetWildlife Trust has publishedtheir future plans for the Bayincluding restricting boats andonly allowing boats to anchor inbad weather.

We are totally against this as itcould lead to the bay beinglittered with up to 150 extra ecomoorings throughout the year.It would be a total waste ofpublic funds as these mooringscan cost up to £3500 each toinstall and there is no evidencethat in the available depths inStudland Bay (2.0 metres) thatthey would benefit the seagrassmeadow because their tacklecould still rest and drag on theseabed at low tide.

The anchorage only gets busy atweekends ,which would mean150 unoccupied bright colouredEFM buoys littering thebeautiful land and seascape for75 % of the time. There arealready 51 local’s boatmoorings that have beenestablished for over 50 years ofwhich 20 can be used by visitingboats ,12 are for very smalllocal boats and dinghies and 10are de-buoyed and droppedonly to be recovered for Julyand August .

After 10 years Conservationistsare still claiming that StudlandBay has the only knownbreeding site for both speciesof British Seahorse and westrongly contest this as recordsshow that both species havebeen found breeding atWeymouth, Bembridge,Dartmouth, Penzance ,PooleHarbour, The Solent,Southampton Water, TheChannel Islands , West SussexCoast . They also claim thatNative Oysters can be found inthe bay ,which has never beenthe case according to localfishermen .

Therefore we contest thepresence of native oysters andthe myth that Studland Bay isthe only known breeding sitefor both species of Seahorsewhich leaves only the presenceof 3 Undulate Rays and the, asyet to be proved allegation thatboats are causing long termdamage to the seagrassmeadows with their anchors asa basis for creating a full blownrestricted and managed MarineConservation Zone in StudlandBay. We believe this is totallyunjustified and will ruin theenjoyment for all but a handfulof career conservationists.

Studland Bay is one of the mostpopular anchorages on theEnglish South Coast andprovides a safe haven for smallboats to shelter in when thereare Strong to Storm ForceWinds from the South,SouthWest and Westerlydirections. The 3,5 miles of safesandy beaches are ideal forfamilies as there are no tidal

currents ,and the surroundingshoreline is owned and wellmanaged by The National Trust.

Despite Conservationists claimson TV and in the Media, Arecent 2 year survey funded byThe Crown Estate could not findany evidence that anchoringhas any impact on the hugearea of Seagrass off the SouthBeach . This is one bit of theDorset Coast we'd like kept freefor humans and sealife to enjoytogether as they have forhundreds of years .

We believe that restrictions willbe put on where families canpaddle in the sea at low tideand there will be seasonalrestrictions on where peoplecan walk on the beach due tonesting birds .

Don't let this beautiful bay andbeach fall into the managementof Wildlife Conservationists whocould restrict human activitiesand right of our children toenjoy Studland as we all have .So please help us in ourstruggle to keep Studland Bayfree from all restrictions bysigning this petition andvisitinghttp://boatownersresponse.org.uk/ for more evidence .

The Ladies Group met on Wednesday, 22nd Marchand we were charged with bringing our favouritepudding along with it's recipe. As you can see therewere a variety of puddings on offer for us all to try. It

was a happy relaxed evening sharing recipes, experiences and chatting. We were also able to share aselection of the puddings with the lovely night watch volunteer whose name I unfortunately forgot toask. We hope he enjoyed them as much as we did.

Our next evening is in April and we are hoping to have a speaker which hasn't been confirmed yet. Inany case we will be meeting and along with a speaker we are sharing an American Supper. For thosewho don’t know what that is,I can confirm it is ‘just a plate of food of your choice’. If there are anyladies who haven't yet joined us but would like to, then we would welcome their company.

There will be posters in the club house advertising the exact date of the next meeting, but if you arethinking of coming and want an email with the details just email [email protected] orcall 07732908815. Alternatively just visit our Facebook page North Haven Ladies Group.

We really do needsome extra help!

During the season Poole Harbour Watch does still run harbour patrols. N.H.Y.C.work together with R.M.Y.C. They co-ordinate the evening and we work withthem. It is once a month and actually not now run as late as it used to be. Suitedto motor boats and people who are comfortable with being on the water afterdark. (Early morning fishermen - speak to me also)

Tara Jones has taken over from me in co-ordinating our crews but needs tocompile a data list of those happy to work on this. IT WOULD BE GREAT IF SOMEYOUNGER MEMBERS COULD HELP!
