Private, one - on - one weaving lessons! October 16, 10am-4pm (2 hours per workshop)

Enjoy a private weaving lesson - all materials included, with members of the Three River’s Fiber Focus and learn more about their group. Only 3 spots available per workshop (10am-noon, noon-2pm, 2pm-4pm); ages 14-adult. Sign up early! Registration deadline: October 9.

Three River ’ s Fiber Focus Three Rivers Fiber Focus meets monthly at the North Hills Art Center. As a guild, they support anyone interested in a variety of fiber arts, from beginners to experts. Their members include knitters, crocheters, weavers, spinners, felters, and quilters. Meeting are on the 4th Monday of the month at 7pm, with a business meeting at 6:30pm. A-72 Extruded Clay Ages 13-Adult Registration deadline: October 22 This clay class will focus on using our clay extruder. We will be using the variety of dies to extrude clay coils, strips and hollow forms. We will use these extruded shapes to create coil cylinders, casserole dishes, soap dispensers, olive oil dispensers, woven baskets and more. No previous clay experience is necessary. All supplies, tools and glazes are included. A-32 Pennsylvania Dutch Folk Art

Adult, Registration deadline: September 23

This class is part history lesson, part hand made creation. Learn about the decorative art of the 17th and 18th century Pennsylvania Dutch, and the symbolism behind their motifs and images. Create a colorful, keepsake piece just in time for the holiday season. Folk artists were traditionally untrained and their work was simplistic and primitive. Therefore, no previous art experience is necessary! Please bring: pencils, sketch or tracing paper, hot press watercolor paper, gouache or watercolors, paintbrushes.

This class explores a new way of creating landscapes by using various weaving techniques. Students begin by drilling and warping a picture frame, then learn ways of weaving and working with fiber to create unique pictures. A-30 Landscape Watercolor

Ages 15-Adult, Registration deadline: October 22

This course is an intro to watercolor with emphasis on landscapes. The class encompasses a transition from purely tonal value studies, to limited palette color temperature studies, to full palette watercolor paintings. Beginning with the value studies will develop our understanding of how to create a sense of light, space & form through shapes of light & shadow. You’ll learn how to utilize transparencies of ink & watercolor to achieve this. Materials list provided.

A-48 Drawing I: Intro to Pencil and Charcoal Ages 12-Adult Registration deadline: September 5 Anyone can learn to draw, given the right fundamen-tals. If you’ve ever heard yourself saying I can’t even draw a stick figure, get ready to surprise yourself. Learn the techniques that will give you the confi-dence to draw from observation. By the end of this course, students will have learned the basics of drawing in dry media, variety of line, mass, contour, cross-contour, reductive drawing, light and shadow, and values. Each session with also provide you with real-life examples of artist techniques, including an instructor demo. You will also give and receive sup-portive, constructive, peer-led feedback on student works at the end of each session. Materials list provided. WS-17 Portrait Drawing Workshop - with Live Model Ages 12-Adult Registration deadline: September 11 Have you ever wanted to learn how to properly draw a face? In this workshop, Olga Brindar will teach students the proportions of the human face, demonstrate a live drawing using a model, and review additional materials regarding the bone and musculature of the human face. In the second half of the session, students will try their hand at portrait drawing from a live model, with in-the-moment feedback from instructor. Live model fee included. Materials list provided. Students will paint along with the instructor to create a portrait using shape, value and proportion. Teacher will provide reference. The focus is to help understand how to build a portrait from start to finish. Using these guidelines will help you with future portrait work. Demo will be done in oils and students can work in any painting medium of choice. Please have knowledge of that medium. Bring canvases/supplies you usually work with. WS-08 Fused Glass Jewelry

Ages 10-Adult Registration deadlines: September 20/October 9

Learn to create stunning fused glass pendants, earrings and pins. Beginner and experienced glass artists can make up to 8 pieces of wearable art. Class includes tips on the use of dichroic glass, layering glass, and using frits and stringers. You can create both full and tack fused pieces. All materials included.

Ages 14-Adult, Registration deadline: September 27

Explore the beautiful art of indigo dyeing using the Japanese technique of Shibori. Using the deep blue indigo dye that has been used for centuries, and some of the Shibori techniques of Kumo, Arashi, Itajime, Ne-Maki, Sekka, Mokume and others to create your one of a kind textiles. You will have access to poles, marbles, clamps, rubber bands, rope and wood to create your patterns. Choose from a 20"x20" cotton square or a silk scarf and bring an item of your choice to dye! Please bring: rubber gloves and a 20"x20" cotton square, t-shirt, tank top, shirt, 4 napkins, or other small item. The item must be WHITE and 100% cotton, rayon, linen, bamboo, wool or silk.

WS-34 Clay Pumpkins & Gourds Ages 12-Adult Registration deadline: September 29 Fall is here and you need some new decorations! Using some hand building techniques (no experience needed), you will create clay pumpkins and gourds for your fall decor. We will have the real thing to look at for inspiration as we form our pieces. Once the pieces have been bisque fired, you will return to add the finishing touches with the ceramic glazes. The pieces will be fired again and will be ready for you to pick up before Halloween! All materials included. Students have the option of uniquely finishing the top of the basket with clay decorations, adding a handle. and selecting a glaze that will be fired on the basket. The baskets will then be ready for your dried arrangements, decorated eggs, candy, fruit, etc. All materials included. WS-71 Fused Glass Ornament Workshop

Ages 10-Adult Registration deadlines: November 3/November 20

Add some special handmade glass ornaments to your Christmas tree, use them as window decorations or give them as a gift. You will create 2-3 ornaments in the workshop using a variety of glass colors, frits and stringers. All materials included.

So you thought Pysanky (Ukrainian Easter Eggs) were just for the spring! Well, in this workshop we will be using Pysanky (Batik Egg Writing) technique to create unique Holiday ornaments. You will use the traditional wax resist method on the eggs to create winter/holiday themed eggs that can be used as tree ornaments or gift giving. All materials included.

C-47 Painting - Build your Skills! Ages 9-13 Registration deadlines: September 7/October 26 Learn the basics of acrylic painting! This class will explore a variety of painting techniques and funda-mentals needed to take your paintings to the next lev-el. We will have fun exploring a variety of subjects, including seasonal landscapes and portraits. All materials included. C-18 Cartooning Basics Ages 8-10 Registration deadline: September 14 Learn the basics of cartooning in this six week course with professional cartoonist/illustrator George Broderick, Jr. From creating original characters using basic, simple shapes to inking, lettering and coloring your drawings for that “professional” touch, the next GREAT comic character could be just a few pencil lines away. Please bring: pencils, ruler, eraser, one thick and one thin Sharpie marker, white sketch paper, color pencils, and color markers to class. Ages 9-12 Registration deadline: September 25 Explore your ability to draw nature's creatures in this class. Whether you like puppies or porcupines, elephants or eagles, warthogs or wallabies, you can learn how to draw them all! Students will learn basic drawing skills and incorporate them into finished projects, using various mediums: pencil, colored pencils, pastels, acrylic paint & scratchboard. All materials included. Students will start with a simple blue print outline, they will design their floor plan then onto decorating the rooms and finishing with a landscaped yard. WSC-21 Clay Gifts for Holiday Giving Ages 6-11 Registration deadline: November 6 In this two part workshop, you will be able to create two special gifts for holiday giving. You will hand build a candy cane handle slab built mug and a coil holiday tree. The mug will be food and dishwasher safe. The projects will be in gift bags when ready for pick up before the holidays. The North Hills Art Center (NHAC) has successfully provided art and arts enrichment to our community for over 60 years. We have not done this alone. It has been made possible by countless volunteer hours. Help us keep this great local asset going. Volunteer. Every hour counts!

Ways you can be involved at the NHAC:

Event Planning- decorating, set up, planning, and participating to insure the smooth operation of events

Fundraising - brainstorming, planning, and implementation of new ideas

Gallery/Traveling Art Shows - assist with drop off, pick up, hanging of artwork; clean up or set up of receptions

Garden - cleanup & planting (spring & fall), general maintenance and weeding

Maintenance - General help around the center: painting, handiwork, etc.

Office Help - assist with data entry, filing, etc.

Outreach - assist with our outreach programs

Artisan Markets - assist with drop off, pick up, set up, inventory and/or break down
