Q: How do I keep House Sparrows out of my bird houses? Now is the time of year when some birds start thinking of love. Great Horned Owls are already establishing breeding territories in February, and you can hear Black-capped Chickadees calling and taking peeks inside nesting boxes. Sometimes though, House Sparrows can take over the houses other birds are interested in. If you want to attract chickadees and House Wrens the first step is to make sure that your bird house, also known as a nesting box, has the right size of hole. For the chickadee and wren, a 1 1/8 inch hole is the most suitable. House Sparrows find this size of hole to be just a bit too small to get through. Nevertheless, they will try to chew the wood around the hole to enlarge it. I witnessed this in our own back yard two years ago. You can use either a hole protector (portal), or an anti-predator tunnel over the nesting box hole to prevent this. A hole protector is a piece of metal with a hole of the right size for the bird you’re trying to attract. It can be screwed to the front of the nesting box over the hole to make the it the correct size and prevent chewing to enlarge the hole. The tunnel device is like a hole extension that both prevents sparrows from enlarging the hole, and also keeps larger birds from reaching into the nest box to eat the eggs or attack the chicks once they’ve hatched. Does this work? Yes. I saw a sparrow just this week trying to get into our nesting box again this year, but it failed due to the tunnel. Last Spring, we had a successful chickadee family early in the spring, and a family of wrens in the same box after the chickadees left! And they had no problem accessing the nesting box through the tunnel.

Q: What are some of the benefits of No-Mess bird food?A good No-Mess bird food blend contains no fillers, only food that birds eat, and no shells to make a mess on the ground. In winter No-Mess food provides an immediate benefit for birds. The average bird in an average environment must forage about five hours per day to meet their energy needs. In winter, they may have to forage longer for much-needed energy. Songbirds may use up to ¾ of their fat reserves in one winter night then replenish those fat reserves the next day. This can be as much as

10% of a chickadee’s body weight. It may not seem like much, but having to shell every seed you eat can take time and energy. Cold winter weather is not the time for birds to loaf at feeders trying to “open the packaging.” Help make a bird’s life easier by offering quality high energy foods like No-Mess Blend. There are no shells so the birds can eat it straightaway or grab a morsel to stash for eating later.

Q: Do some species of birds return to my feeder year after year? It’s really hard to think of wild birds as being loyal friends. After all, they are truly one of the freest creatures on the planet, able to fly anywhere at anytime with nothing to bind them to any single location. But birds, like humans, are creatures of habit and bird banding studies have shown that many of our winter birds, such as juncos and native sparrows, use the same wintering location year after year. With a potential lifespan of over 10 years, it is likely that the junco gleaning millet off of the ground below one of your feeders has spent many previous winters as your loyal backyard guest. And recent research shows that is only half the story! These birds are not only loyal to a specific location, but also to a single feeder! The study showed that the only time they abandoned their favourite feeder was during periods of cold weather when the feeder was placed in a location too exposed to the wind. So help your birds stay loyal and warm by locating your feeders in a sheltered location out of the wind. The east or southeast side of a house or near a row of trees or evergreens is ideal. Once you have them in a safe and sheltered location, be sure to keep your feeders filled with the high energy foods that provide your birds with the crucial nutrition they need to survive the coldest months of the year.

To register your child in Supertot, please email [email protected] and include Supertot in the email subject. We will contact you to fill out information about your child via email. Then proceed to step 2 below.

U4 AND ABOVE: EMSA has instituted web-based registration this year for all communities. EMSA’s registration process involves two steps:

1. The first step is online registration of the player through EMSA’s website www.emsawest.com. The registration portal is now open. Once a player’s online registration is complete, a confirmation email will be sent to the email address provided for the player.

2. The second step is payment of the registration fees.

There are 3 ways to pay your fees, DUE by March 8th, 2016:

• Online (VISA/ MC/ AMEX) Make an online payment to our community league through Eventbrite, http://ngclsoccer.eventbrite.ca. Visit the website and select “tickets” for each of your registrants. Transaction fees are added to your total for this method of payment.

• In-person (Cash or Cheque) Two dates available for in-person payment sessions (times and locations below). Bring a copy of the confirmation email to the in-person payment session. Once payment is made your player will be placed on a community team.

The two in person payment sessions for North Glenora team players are:

• NG Community Payment Session: Saturday March 5 from 10am to 2pm at the North Glenora Hall (Address: 13535 109A Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5M 3Z4) • Central Payment Session: Tuesday March 8 from 6pm to 8:30 pm at the Double Tree by Hilton (Address: 16615 109 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5P 4K8; Mayfield Road, just north of 107 Avenue: the former Mayfield Inn.)

Additionally, if anyone is interested in volunteering with the soccer coordinators in some capacity (big or small) to assist in planning and organizing soccer this season, please email Nathaniel Friedenthal at [email protected]
