COMMUNITY

North Island College campuses are located on Vancouver Island in Campbell River, Port Alberni, Port Hardy, and the Comox Valley. Most international programs are based in the Comox Valley, which is home to three municipal communities: Courtenay, Comox, and Cumberland. Each offers unique shopping, recreation, and entertainment opportunities.

PEOPLE

The Comox Valley is home to 64,084 people. Residents are friendly and welcoming, and primarily speak English. People in the Comox Valley enjoy many outdoor sports, and the arts community is highly developed and talented. Education and learning are very important to the people who live here.

ACTIVITIES

Centrally located on Vancouver Island, the Comox Valley provides many opportunities to visit the Island’s most famous locations such as Long Beach in Pacific Rim National Park and the City of Victoria. Students enjoy visiting wineries, attending summer music festivals, hiking in old growth forests, or enjoying an afternoon ocean kayaking.

ENTERTAINMENT AND LIFESTYLE

With theatres, art galleries, numerous restaurants and festivals, there’s always something to see in the Comox Valley. Events occur year round and Vancouver Island is often called ‘The Recreational Capital of Canada’ because there are so many fun things to do.

FOOD, RESTAURANTS AND SHOPPING

The Comox Valley has many restaurants, from fine dining to casual cafés and fast food. There are also many supermarkets that can provide you with a variety of local and international foods. Most shops are open seven days a week. Supermarkets and pharmacies are open late.

TRANSPORTATION

Most residents have personal vehicles for transportation. Public bus services are available in every community, and bicycle travel is very common year round.

GENERAL ADMISSIONTo qualify for admission to North Island College you must meet the following requirements:

ESL programs:

1. Applicants must be 18* years of age and a high school graduate. TOEFL or IELTS scores are not required.

All other programs (academic, career, trades):

1. Applicants must be 18* years of age

2. Meet other academic and admission requirements for your chosen program. For example: Grade 11 math.

3. English is the language of instruction. To be admitted to the college, you must meet the minimum English requirements for the program. You may complete one of: NIC Academic English Prep Program; or BC Grade 12 English C(+); or CAEL 60 and writing 60; or IELTS 6.0 no band below 5.5; or TOEFL iBT 80 no section below 19; or TOEFL 550 (Code 8538).

International Baccalaureate diploma graduates are welcome to apply and will be provided with options of first year standing for many higher level courses with a minimum grade of 4.

* Options may be available for younger students who have completed high school.

MATH/ENGLISH ASSESSMENT SERVICENorth Island College offers math, English and ESL assessment services on campus or online. If you do not meet the English language or math requirement (if applicable) for your chosen program, you may be eligible for Conditional Admission while you upgrade your skills.

VISA & STUDY PERMITS

Study permits are required for international students who plan to study in Canada for longer than six months. Once you have received your Letter of Acceptance or Conditional Letter of Acceptance from North Island College, you can apply for a study permit. For more information on study permit requirements to study in Canada, visit www.cic.gc.ca.

PAYMENT & DEADLINES

Students are required to submit their first term fees no later than 30 days after the date on their Letter of Invitation from North Island College. Tuition and fees may be paid by certified cheque in Canadian funds, credit card, postal money order, or bank wire.

REFUND POLICY

North Island College Refund Policy – first term tuition and all related fees (Application Fee, International Student Service Fee, Student Union Fee, Accommodation Placement Fee and Lab/Program Fees) are non-refundable.

Exceptions to this policy include:

1. A refund will be processed when a student submits to North Island College a copy of the letter from Canada Immigration denying their study permit. A $200 processing fee and any applicable charges (e.g. courier fees, wire transfer fees) will be deducted from the refund. The letter from

Canada Immigration must be submitted within three (3) months of the date on the letter. Please note: North Island College assumes study permit applications include authentic documentation. No refund is available if a study permit is denied because documentation lacked authenticity or is labelled as fraudulent.

2. Applicants/students may be considered for a refund in exceptional circumstances only. Requests for a proportional refund may be approved by the Executive Director, International Education upon receipt of a written request outlining the specific circumstances with documentation. The approval or rejection of a request for a refund will be determined based on the rationale provided in the submission. Circumstances of medical or immediate family emergencies will be considered.
