North Petherton Link to the Old World

Monkey Trail:

Following part of the beautiful Macmillan Way.

Starting at: North Petherton OS map ref: ST 289 329.

Walk start time: 8.30am

Arrival at start of Old World Monkey Trail (Fyne Court): 10.30am

Rendezvous time with Human Trail: 11.40am

Total walk time from North Petherton: 9 hours 10mins.

8.30am: Starting at North Pertherton. Park next to the

village hall/church (just around the corner on your right as

shown on the photo above left). Walk back to the place

shown above and take the road pictured immediately left

after the shop/off licence/Post Office (currently McColl’s)

visible to the left of the photo.

Walk up Tapper’s Lane and then turn left and then

immediately right up Cliff Road signposted to Clavelshay as

pictured above right.

A minute or two up Cliff Road you’ll see the pink house

shown above left. Take the right turn beforehand onto

Hulkshay Lane and walk down hill and then climb over the

style shown above right into a field. Walk diagonally across

the field to where you will spot another style on the far side.

8.38am: Go over this and turn left along the little lane, and

walk a short distance until the road crossed over the little

stream.

Immediately afterwards turn right onto the path shown

above left. Follow the path through the field but a minute or

so later turn off onto a smaller path keeping close to the right

hand side of the field nearer the stream.

Follow this path over a style and then turn steep left up hill

beside the hedge until you reach another style leading onto a

lane.

8.49am: Turn right and keep left at the fork shown above

left. Walk along keeping on the main path that winds up the

valley at the edge of the woods.

9.07am: Your path joins with path shown above left. Keep

straight on but keep left at the path fork shown above right.

Follow the main path, keeping the stream somewhere close

to your right.

9.30pm: Eventually, at the end of the woods, keep right at

the fork in the path shown above. Walk over the little foot

bridge and carry on up the valley with the stream now on

your left (shown below).

9.36am: The path takes a steep right hand bend near the

gate shown above left, and then goes past ‘half a barn’ over

the stream and up the track just visible in the middle of the

photo above right.

Go through the double gates (above left) and on the other

side carry straight on up the main path beside the hedge.

9.53am: Go through another gate and beware the

badgers! Carry on down past the farm (above right) and then

straight on uphill along the lane.

10am: At its end, turn right as shown above left, but just

past the next house, turn right up the steps shown above

right and into a field. Keep close to the fence at the rear of

the same house.

10.07am: After a short while you go through another style

under a holly tree and then swop to the other side of the

fence and follow it along in the same general direction as

pictured above left. Drop down the valley side to a gate (just

visible) shown above right and into someone’s back garden,

over some little bridges and then past a beautiful lake. Nice

spot for a break if you are making good time.

10.15am: Continue over the little bridge shown above left

and go over a style into the woods. Follow the path, (it

becomes obvious as you walk along ).

10.20am : The path joins a larger path after a short while

(not pictured) but keep right (straight on really) until you

reach the fork shown above left. Keep right here and walk up

through the woods until you reach the corner of a lane

pictured above right.

Head up hill into Broomfield

Village, past the Village Hall and Church and past some

cottages set back from the road until you reach the entrance

to Fyne Court (above).

10.30am: This is the start of the Old World Monkey Trail.

If all has gone according to plan, you should have 20 mins

rest time before continuing onwards. Other Old World

Monkey trailers may have parked in the Fyne Court car park

(through the gates pictured above) and start from there.
