The bill would create a new office of Women's Health at the VA, extending coverage of healthcare for newborn children of veterans, as well as access for female veterans experienc- ing post-traumatic stress disorder, sexual trauma, and homelessness. Approval by the Senate and signing by the President are still necessary before the Act becomes a law. Deborah Sampson (1760-1827) was born in Plympton, Massachusetts and fought in the Revolutionary War. Sampson's first attempt to join the Army was foiled in 1782 when she was recognized despite her men's clothing. Later that same year, Sampson again dressed as a man and enlisted Deborah Sampson Act Closer to Reality as “Robert Shirtliff”, joining the Light Infantry Company of the 4 th Massachusetts Regiment. An elite troop, the Light Infantry Companies were taller and stronger than the average soldiers. In her first battle, Sampson was wounded by two musket balls to the thigh, and a cut on her forehead. Despite her injuries, Sampson tried to avoid being brought to the doctor where she feared her gender would be discovered. How- ever, Sampson left the hospital as soon as her head wound was treated, and removed one of the musket balls herself with a penknife and sew- ing needle. Her leg never fully healed with a musket ball left in her leg, too deep to reach by herself. In 1783 Sampson fell ill, and a doctor discovered her secret. She was honorably discharged with- out reprimand. In later years, and at times with the help of her friend, Paul Revere, Sampson did receive pay that had been withheld because she was a woman, eventually winning petitions for a mili- tary pension, and an increase as an “invalid sol- dier” due to her injuries incurred in battle.
