Welcome to the 15th Annual North Star Classic!
~ December 4-7, 2014 ~
Dawn Riley, Manager
We are looking forward to another busy North Star Classic! Thank you to all those who have helped make this the largest cattle show in ND.…our commercial & livestock exhibitors, sale
managers & consignors, sponsors, volunteers, directors and patrons; we could not do it without you! We appreciate your continued support and hope you will join us for the
15th annual North Star Classic! Thursday will again be the “kick-off” to the North Star Classic with a FREE SOCIAL that evening,
beginning at 5pm. Friday will then feature the open shows; the pen shows will take place on Saturday and the junior shows will be on Sunday. A silent auction will again be set up Friday–Sunday, in the main building, with a portion of the proceeds to go towards a scholarship fund, and the remaining towards the NSC premium fund. New this year, a “Holiday Showcase” will be set up in the main building Saturday and Sunday, so be sure to visit those vendors!
This year we have two Livestock Honorees , Ed Olson, of Argusville, ND and the late Tom
Wieland, of Sanborn, ND; both contributed to the success of the North Star Classic and North Dakota Winter Show, as well as to the livestock industry in general. Tom was also a valued NDWS employee; he did a wonderful job as the barn manager and is greatly missed. Thank you to them both.
The Dinner Show will be held on Friday evening, and we are exited to have Williams & Ree,
“The Indian & The White Guy”, back to entertain the crowd, at the Valley City Eagles Club. Come join us for a fun evening.
In addition to the pen shows, Saturday’s events include a fitting clinic, youth livestock judging
and the Angus, Hereford and Club Calf Sales. Sullivan Supply’s “Stock Show U” will be back to conduct a free fitting clinic on Saturday morning and juniors will be able to put their knowledge to use for the junior shows the next day. Come check it out and all of the other activities, at the 15th annual North Star Classic!

Valley City is known for its numerous specialty stores and antique shops, with a great selection of holiday gifts. On Friday, join us for the Holiday Lights Parade, at 6 pm, along Central Avenue. Following the parade, there will be pictures with Santa at Dutton’s Parlour. On Sunday morning, area churches invite North Star Classic visitors to worship with them and discover the “reason for the season”.

W i l l i a m s & R e eThe entertaining duo, Williams and Ree, or perhaps the team better known as
“The Indian and The White Guy”, will be back in Valley City to perform at this year’s dinner show.
Bruce Williams and Terry Ree met in the Black Hills of South Dakota and began touring the country primarily as a musical act; soon however, their unique brand of humor made its way into the show and together they have sustained a career that has lasted for over 45 years.
The pair enjoys a rigorous touring schedule year round, sharing the stage with contemporary country music artists or headlining their own sold out shows at festivals, theaters and casinos. Williams and Ree remain at the top of their game, bringing joy and laughter to generations. Don’t miss them!
The Williams & Ree Dinner Show is Friday, December 5th, with dinner at 6:30 pm and the show at 8:00 pm.

m e e t t h e j u d g e sJeff Fruhling will be judging the Open Shows in Main Arena 2. Jeff is a livestock and grain producer from Homer, IL, where he and his son, Travis, run a 2500 acre farm. At Fruhling Farms, they raise Angus cattle with a lot of performance and show ring quality and have shown champions at the NAILE, National Western and the Ft. Worth Livestock Show. Jeff won the high individual in the state FFA Livestock Judging Contest and is a graduate of Illinois State University, with a BS Degree in Farm Management and a minor in Animal Science. While attending the university, he was an active member of the livestock judging team. Jeff has judged at the North Star Classic previously and is looking forward to coming back and judging again.
Mark Hecht, of Paynesville, MN, will be judging the Open Shows, in Main Arena 1, as well as the Pen Shows, at the 2014 North Star Classic. Mark has been a purebred Charolais breeder for over 30 years and has approximately 60 head of cattle. He is a graduate of the University of MN, where he was on the livestock and meats judging teams. He and his team members placed in the top ten at the America Royale. Mark has judged a number of shows, as well as all breeds throughout the country, and is involved in youth coaching as well.
Levi Hall will be judging the Junior Shows in Main Arena 1. Levi grew up outside of Berthold, ND where he and his brothers raise and show highly competitive registered Angus and Sim-Angus cattle. He was a member of the NDSU Livestock Judging Team in 2012 and graduated that December with a degree in Agri-Business. Levi judged the Junior Show at the 2013 ND Winter Show and has judged several county fairs across ND. He is currently working as a grain merchandiser in Argyle, MN.
Jeremy Leister of Stillwater, OK, will be judging the Junior Shows in Main Arena 2, at this year’s North Star Classic. Jeremy grew up in rural Missouri, on a family farm near Amsterdam, and was actively involved in 4-H and FFA. Upon graduation he attended Hutchinson Community College, on a livestock judging scholarship, and was a part of a competitive judging team for two years. He received his Associate’s Degree in Science there and then went on to attend Oklahoma State University, where he was fortunate enough to get a job at the OSU Purebred Beef Center. Jeremy was an integral member of the 2010 American Royal Champion and National Champion Livestock Judging Team, one of only 10 teams to accomplish that feat in the prestigious history of livestock judging, and was also a member of the 2011 National Champion Meat Animal and Carcass Evaluation Team. He completed his bachelor’s degree in 2011 and then began as the Cowherd Manager for the OSU Purebred Range, where he was responsible for breeding, calving, and basic daily care of all the mature cows. In August, Jeremy was hired as the Senior Herd Manager for the OSU Purebred Center. He could not be more thrilled to have the opportunity to travel to North Dakota, meet new people and evaluate the animals.

The clinic is scheduled from 10 am to noon and is free for anyone to attend! Saturday’s other events include a free youth livestock judging workout, from 8 am to 10 am and youth showmanship that evening at 7 pm. The showmanship will consist of four age groups, with belt buckles awarded to the champion in each division.
On Sunday, December 7th, the Junior Breed Shows, the Overall Supreme Heifer Show and the Ag Country Junior Market Steer and Heifer Showdown are scheduled, with the breed shows beginning at 8 am. of Bulls 2 0 1 4 l i v e s t o c k h o n o r e e sTom Wieland Sr., son of Bernard and Florence Wieland, grew up on the family farm east of Dazey. He attended and graduated from St. Catherine’s Catholic School, in Valley City. After graduation, he started farming and ranching and also enlisted in the North Dakota National Guard, where he served for six years. He served as a Sibley Trail Township Officer for several years and was Chairman of the Board of the Dazey Shipping Association, Past Commander of the Dazey American Legion, a director with the Ashtabula Land Owners and the Lake Users Association and also a past president, secretary and board member of the Dazey Sodbuster Club. Tom’s passion for cattle took him from raising cattle on the family farm, to working with cattle at McDonald Livestock, West Fargo Stockyards and also Central Livestock. In 2013, Tom started to work for the North Dakota Winter Show, as the Barn Manager, and took great pride in his new job. Tom loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and horseback riding. He passed away May 29th, 2014. He was a proud father to his son Tom Wieland, Jr., who passed away in 2001, and his daughters Lori and Tonya.
C. Edward Olson, son of Albin and Ruth Olson, was born and raised on his family’s farm west of Argusville, in Cass County, North Dakota. OHR has been a family owned and operated business since 1914, first as a grain operation and then expanding into a purebred cattle operation in 1936, first with Herefords, then adding Polled Herefords in 1967 and Red Angus since 1991. Edward graduated from Arthur High School in 1958 and went on to attend NDSU. He married Jeanne West in 1968 and had 3 children, all of which graduated from NDSU: Carl (Lindsay), Craig (Laura) and Caryn and five grandchildren: Casey, Evie, Dru, Stetson and Maxwell. Carl currently oversees the family farming operation, Craig owns West Funeral Homes in West Fargo and Casselton and Caryn is an Event Leader for the Fargo-based Scheels Company. He has been a member of the NDWS Livestock Committee serving as a rep for Herefords, Polled Herefords and Red Angus breeds numerous times and in various capacities. He is also currently an active member in the National Polled Hereford Association and the Red Angus Association of America. He has served as a Director for Cass County Farm Bureau and is a current member of the NDSU Livestock Endowment Board and also of Herby Lutheran Church.“Our family has exhibited cattle at every North Dakota Winter Show since the first one in 1938. I clearly remember my first year as an exhibitor because I was 8 years old. There have been three generations of Olsons to exhibit at the NDWS, and we are pretty sure we’re the only family to continuously participate from the beginning to its transition into the North Star Classic.”The first Winter Show was held in several locations, one of them being PEGG Garage, in downtown Valley City. Livestock was later moved to a round wooden building with a show ring in the middle, and cattle stalled around the perimeter. When it was decided they would build a new structure, Ed was asked to represent the youth and 4H on a committee of three, with Al Dexter and Herman Stern, to raise money from breeders and business leaders to invest in the venture. Over the course of a year, they went to meetings in most of the counties in the state and his job was to tell people what this building would mean to youth events in North Dakota. Because of their collaboration, most of the money was secured before the project began. At the time, the Winter Show building was the largest free span building in the state.OHR was the first operation to host its private production sale at the Winter Show building. Red Power was hosted there for five years, starting in 2002, and has since been held at the family farm. Red Power is the third Thursday of February and features registered Red Angus and Polled Hereford bulls and a selection of females. The Olsons have continuously operated as Olson Hereford Ranch with their Red Angus division known as OHR Red Angus.Edward is semi-retired and currently farms with his son Carl with 2,800 acres and 150 cattle. He and Jeanne reside in Fargo.
Join us as we recognize Ed Olson and the late Tom Wieland, in the main arena on Friday, December 5th, at 4 pm. A free social will be held in the Gold Buckle Pub,
on the north side of the main arena, following the ceremony.

Dear Cattlemen,Once again Angus enthusiasts will gather in Valley City for the highly anticipated North Star Classic to review the newest generation of pioneering Angus genetics presented by some of the foremost breeders in the “Legendary” state. The Angus offering is an elite presentation from North Dakota’s pioneering Angus breeders with some fresh new genetics to tempt the most discriminating cattlemen.
Purebred Angus females are in great demand to repopulate America’s grassland where droughts and blizzards have taken a heavy toll. Much like hybrid crops that now prosper in inclement environments, the modern day Angus female is inherently programmed for low-input programs that demand fertility, longevity, calving ease, docility, and feed efficiency. What’s more, growth and carcass traits continue to improve across the breed to the point that, Continental breeders are looking to Angus genetics to enhance the performance of their composites.
Feel free to contact our office or any of the contributors with your inquiries; otherwise it will be our great pleasure to greet you on December 6th.
Sincerely,Al and Jeanne ConoverDave Sweeney

Terms: Cash. All sales are in U.S. dollars. Each animal is to be sold to the highest bidder and all sales are final. The auctioneer shall settle any disputes between the bids.
The sale managers, Conover Auction Service, reserve the right to withdraw any consignment prior to the sale. It is the consignor’s responsibility to set an individual floor price with the sale managers 30 minutes prior to
the sale start.
All cattle are to be paid for by the purchaser in full, during or immediately after the sale. No cattle will be
allowed off the premises or can be entered in any of the North Star Classic shows if they are not previously paid for.
All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk. The North Star Classic, along with Conover Auction
Service, are not responsible for any accidents, health problems or injury, before, during, or after the sale. In addition, they assume no liability, legal, or otherwise
for any accidents that occur. Each animal is at the purchasers risk after the sale.
Transferring registration certificates must be worked out between the buyers and seller after the sale is
made; arrangements will be between the two parties for transfer and payment.
All out-of-state animals entering the sale must be accompanied with health papers on the day of arrival.
In-state cattle require no health papers; however, if an in-state animal is sold out-of-state, health papers must be
obtained that day by the on-site veterinarian. Consignors will absorb those expenses.
All heifers are considered reproductively sound, unless otherwise stated. Neither the North Star Classic
nor Conover Auction Service is responsible for any reproductive failures.
Announcements made by the auctioneer, sale managers, the North Star Classic, or the consignor, concerning the cattle on sale day, take precedence over statements in
this catalog.

Whether you’re buying or selling, no other publication gives you more livestock coverage in the northern prairie states.
Farm & Ranch Guide supports the livestock industry, not only through the annual Livestock Guide and the regular issues of Farm & Ranch Guide, but through support for area livestock shows and events.
Our full service livestock services department has been around since the beginning of Farm & Ranch Guide over 35 years ago. Talk to Kirby Goettsch or Alex Acheson about your upcoming sale or any livestock advertising needs you may have.
Join the hundreds of livestock producers who have come to rely on Farm & Ranch Guide to assist in their marketing efforts.
