Dear Margaret Whilst I do not wish to alarm anyone, I want to warn readers of a scam currently targeting the area. We have knowledge of two incidents where elderly individuals have been targeted by phone, by a call centre in which the caller states that they have reason to believe that there is a problem with their internet or email service. The caller then states that their "firm" can fix the problem on their computer for a fee and asks for bank details and their internet access codes. These people are convincing and very persistent. As many people, especially of an older age group, are not always confident with new technology this request can seem compelling; especially when they are in their own home and feeling safe and off guard. It is extremely unlikely that any reputable email/ internet service provider would ever cold call a customer in this way and clearly if you had a problem with your email or internet service it would be more likely that you would bring it to your service provider's attention than the other way around. If this happens we would strongly suggest that you put the phone down, without giving any details then refer the matter to Norfolk Police. If you have given details and have been targeted in this way then I would suggest that you contact Norfolk Police for advice as to what to do next. Dear MargaretWhilst I do not wish to alarm anyone, I want to warn readers of a scam currently targeting the area.

We have knowledge of two incidents where elderly individuals have been targeted by phone, by a call centre in which the caller states that they have reason to believethat there is a problem with their internet or email service. The caller then states that their "firm" can fix the problemon their computer for a fee and asks for bank details andtheir internet access codes.

These people are convincing and very persistent. As manypeople, especially of an older age group, are not alwaysconfident with new technology this request can seem compelling; especially when they are in their own homeand feeling safe and off guard.

It is extremely unlikely that any reputable email/ internetservice provider would ever cold call a customer in this

way and clearly if you hada problem with youremail or internet serviceit would be more likelythat you would bring itto your service provider's attention than the other way around.

If this happens we wouldstrongly suggest that you put thephone down, without giving any details then refer the matter to Norfolk Police. If youhave given details and have been targeted in this way then I would suggest that you contact Norfolk Police for adviceas to what to do next.

STAYING ALIVE...As part of their Paston Sixth Form College Enrichment Challenge, 32 students completed a St John Ambulance course in Essential FirstAid. The students now know how to deal with emergencies safely, fromaccidents involving broken bones and burns, to heart attacks, chokingand unconsciousness. Students demonstrated their skills in recognising a range of conditions and treating the casualties, including bandaging,mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and heart massage… this often accompanied by rather off-key renditions of the Bee Gees ‘StayingAlive’ or ‘Row, row, row your boat…’! Students were presented withtheir certificates by Kevin Grieve, Principal.

Students commented that they really enjoyed the three hour session, ‘I loved being covered in bandages’ and ‘it was really friendly eventhough you didn’t know everybody at the start’. Several students commented that they felt more prepared for going to university and living independently, ‘you never know when you’re going to need it’.

This is a fantastic Thai curry passed down tome from a previous head chef who had lots ofexperience with Asian foods, and it’s stayedwith me ever since. It’s the perfect time of year for curries generally, and this one is a realwinter warmer – in fact one of the owners herecalls it ‘The Suffolk’ because it’s slightlythicker than normal… (!)

As we keep one eye on a couple of big occasions coming up here at the Grove –Mother’s Day and Easter – we’re continuing to run our over 50s lunchtime special – twocourses plus coffee off the specials board forjust £10 – so do pop in and see us Wednesdaythrough to Saturday. And don’t forget ouramazing Sunday lunch too!

The delicate blend of flavours give my ThaiKing Prawn Green Curry a starring role on our upcoming Valentines menu – details ateatatthegrovecromer.co.uk.

Ingredients:50g Thai green curry paste or more for

extra heat*4 tins of full fat coconut milk15g lemon grass15g finely sliced fresh ginger 1 lemon (zest and juice)2 limes (zest and juice)

50g fresh coriander3 pulped cloves of garlic 100g of peeled raw tiger prawns (half and

remove the tube through the body)50g sliced Chinese cabbage, either from

the supermarket, or ask Andrew or Lisa at the Cromer Farm and Health Shop

½ finely sliced red onion 2 peeled and finely sliced carrots1 finely sliced courgette halved Jasmine rice as you require

*Thai green curry paste - try to use mae ploy, but if that’s not available Blue Dragon is alsook – just double the weight as it’s not as strong.Alternatively there’s a good recipe online thatI’ve used before: www.kitchenbutterfly.com/how-to/make-thai-green-curry-paste/ - all theingredients can be found at the Cromer Farmand Health shop on Tucker Street.

Method:1. Empty the contents of the coconut milk

into a saucepan and gently simmer.2. Into this add your sliced ginger,

chopped lemongrass, citrus zest and juice, garlic and your curry paste. Reduce the mixture until it has thickened slightly, remove from the

heat and strain back into the saucepan.3. In a separate pan boil the rice until the

water has disappeared, then drain - the texture should be fluffy and sticky.

4. Place the curry sauce on a medium to low heat and add your vegetables; these need to be crunchy in texture so only a few minutes cooking in the sauce is needed.

5. Once your vegetables are done add your halved peeled prawns and chopped coriander. The prawns will only need a about a minute as they will be delicate after halving.

That’s it, serve how you wish – though it’salways nice with some wedges of lime andchopped corriander.

The RNLI Henry Blogg Museum inCromer is searching for a straw donkey, and other special souvenirs, to featurein an exciting new exhibition.

On Saturday 23 February members of the public are invited to visit the museum bringingwith them a souvenir that holds a memory.

Chosen souvenirs will then have the chance to be displayed in a forthcoming exhibition.Keepsakes, Key Rings and Kiss Me Quick!: A History of Souvenirs will run from the 29March to the 14 April 2013 at the museum. Looking at the history of souvenirs, includingitems salvaged from shipwrecks and RNLImemorabilia, the exhibition will explore what makes objects special to us. People havealways collected keepsakes as reminders ofspecial events, holidays, moments in history, places or people and this will be reflected uponwithin the display.

The exhibition will feature items from the museum's own collection including an emotivetile salvaged from the Sepoy. This mementocommemorates Henry Blogg's rescue of

the two crew members from thebarge in December 1933. Handpainted to depict the scene the tileshows a desire to remember and commemorate theevent.

Also on display will be a photograph ofthree elegantEdwardian women ridingdonkeys at Lowestoft. This souvenir shows a morelight-hearted recording ofevents. Taken exactly 100years ago, the image waspreserved in a photographalbum belonging to JoyceTaylor, which was laterdonated to the HenryBlogg Museum by her sonand also includes images of Cromer lifeboats.

The museum is hoping that visitors will bring arange of souvenirs on the 23 February ranging

from Mexican sombreros to RNLI memorabilia and, of course, the elusivestraw donkey. Whatever the souvenir thisis a fantastic opportunity for the public tosee their own objects on display and telltheir stories.

Jacqui Palmer, Museum Manager said: ‘I hope that many interesting

souvenirs are shown on the day, especially onesrelated to the RNLI, and

I look forward to seeingsome become part of ourexciting Easter exhibition.’

Exhibitions Assistant Rebecca Fletcher said:

‘I am eager to see the mix ofitems that the public willbring to the museum and amparticularly interested to hear

the fascinating and varied stories behind them.

We obviously want to find that straw donkey!’

Central to this is the Lifebuoy Art Trailwhich will run in the same spirit as the decorated windbreaks in 2012.For the sum of £50 or £60 sponsors will be supplied with a 24” or 30”primed, plastic lifebuoy to decorate and display as part of the Festival’sArt Trail which will run from Easter until August 2013. At the end of thetrail all the windbreaks will go into the Grand Windbreak Auction onSunday 25 August. The first 100 lifebuoys are now available to sponsor.Alongside the Lifebuoy Art Trail the Festival is encouraging artists, designers and creative’s of all ages and abilities to enter their secondPoster Design Competition where one lucky winner will see their design

turned into 2013s official Festival poster. Details of the competition canbe found on the Festival website, the deadline is Friday 1 March.

The Festival would like to see as many people as possible getting involved. Chairman Tony Shipp said “We are delighted to start the year on such a positive note. We hope the Lifebuoy Art Trail will be as successful as the windbreaks, it’s a great way for visitors to explorethe area and see what North Norfolk has to offer.” He added “we are also running the Festival’s Poster Design Competition where people can design the Festival’s official poster for 2013, entries are alreadycoming in”.

With over 40 events and an expanded street theatre programme thisyear’s festival offers an abundance of fun for all the family across theweek

Festival secretary Kate Royall said “In 2012 the Festival achieved enormous successes. Over 20,000 people enjoyed the Festival weekend, thousands followed the art trail and hundreds of people entered theposter design competition and we hope this year’s Festival, with an expanded programme of free events, will achieve the same success and bring more people to this fabulous area”.

For more information on the Lifebuoys, Poster Design Competition, volunteering with the Festival and many other opportunities pleasesee the website www.crabandlobsterfestival.co.uk or call 07775337201.

Deaths due to cold weather increase by almost20% during the winter months. Many of thesedeaths can be prevented if those at risk are able to keep themselves warm by heating theirhomes, wearing warm clothing and staying active. NNDC is working with a number ofhealth and voluntary sector organisations to ensure those residents more likely to be affected by the cold weather receive a WinterWarmth pack. The packs include a range ofproducts and information to help keep peoplewarm and well in cold weather.

Those who will benefit from the packs are vulnerable people whose health and well-beingis more likely to be at risk from living in a coldhome. Priority will be given to people who arevulnerable due to age, disability, a pre-existing

health condition, a low income or who live in a poorly heated or insulated home.

The Winter Warmth pack contains a range of products including gloves, a hat, socks, a hot water bottle, insulated mug and a roomthermometer. The room thermometer has beenprovided to help recipients check that theirhomes are at the recommended temperature of between 18 - 21°C (64 – 70 °F).

NNDC Cabinet Member for Health and Well-Being, Angie Fitch-Tillett, said, “The recent cold snap has brought in to focus justhow important it is to ensure we consider thehealth and well-being of the most vulnerableamong our communities. Remaining warm and well is often difficult for those on a low income, older people and those with long-term

health conditions. The range of products offered within the Warmth Pack will help makea real difference to those people. Distributionof the packs is already underway and I ampleased that we are working closely with manylocal voluntary organisations to provide helpand practical advice to those in need.”

For further information and advice concerning energy efficiency in the home, please contact NNDC Housing Services on 01263 516315.

Additional services to support vulnerableresidents are available all year round fromstatutory agencies in Norfolk. See www.norfolk.gov.uk for details. For more information and updates aboutthe support available and for advice onkeeping safe this winter, please visitwww.norfolk.gov.uk/warmandwell

Keeping the vulnerable warm and well Following the announcement that Norfolk has again successfully bid for extra fundingfrom central Government to help the vulnerable this winter, North Norfolk District Council has begun distributing 300 Winter Warmth packs to residents across the District.

Of course, the answer to this question dependsupon the circumstances eg. ownership and occupation etc.

Here I deal only with the rules relating to whatis known as the ‘disregard’.

The value of a resident’s former home will bedisregarded in the following circumstances:-

i) Where the same is occupied by a partner, husband, wife, civil partner or unmarried partner except where the resident is estranged or divorced from them.

ii) Where the same is occupied by a relative who is aged 60 or over or a younger relative who is ‘incapacitated’.

‘Relatives’ include parents, parents-in-law, son, son-in-law, daughter, daughter-in-law, step-parent, step-son, step-daughter, brother, sister, grandparent, grandchild, uncle, aunt, nephew, niece, spouse or unmarried partner of the foregoing and also including adoptive parents and adoptive children.‘Incapacitated’ refers to a person in receipt of Attendance Allowance, Disability Living Allowance, Severe Disablement Allowance, Incapacity Benefit or anyone not in receipt of the above but whose incapacity is equivalent to that required for one of the above.

iii)Where the same is a former partner who is either divorced or estranged from the resident but who is a lone parent.

iv) Where the same is occupied by a child under 16 whom the resident is liable to maintain ie. is a dependant.

The value of the home must also be disregarded if the stay in residential care istemporary and the resident intends to returnhome or the resident is taking steps to sell it tofind something more appropriate to return to.

The Local Authority also has a ‘discretionary’power to disregard the value of the propertywhere it is the home of someone else not included on the above list and may be exercised where:-

• The home is the sole residence of someone who has given up their own home to care for the resident, or

• Where someone is an elderly companion of the resident, particularly if they have given up their own home.

The Local Authority will also disregard thevalue of a resident’s former home for the first12 weeks from the date of the resident’s admission into permanent care.

If that resident has entered the care home on atemporary basis and then decides to stay permanentlythe 12 week disregard runs from the date when the stay becomes permanent.

The Post Office will continue to offer accessible driving licence and tax services to millions of customers in the UK, includingin North Norfolk. Local MP Norman Lamb attended an event in Parliament last month to show his support for the win by signing a dedicated congratulations board.

Commenting, Norman Lamb, former PostalServices Minister, said “The Post Office is avital part of communities in North Norfolk andhas long provided a platform for essential andevery day government services. I was thrilledwhen it was announced that the Post Office bidhas been successful. I am dedicated to ensuinglocal residents can easily access services theyneed and think this is another step in reachingthat goal. When I was Postal Services MinisterI kept a close eye on the Post Office’s work onwinning the contract. This is the tenth successin a row for Post Office Limited. It is also greatnews that we have the lowest member of PostOffice closures for 25 years.”

Martin Moran, Commercial Director at thePost Office said “We are delighted to have thesupport of Norman Lamb MP. The Post Officehas a strong track record in successfully delivering essential government services.

Winning the DVLA contract again is testimonyto the quality of our staff and subpostmasters, whose longstanding commitment to servinglocal communities contributed greatly to thissuccess.”

The Post Office, now independent of RoyalMail, has an unrivalled national network ofover 11,500 branches across the UK, more than all the high street banks combined, andsits at the heart of many communities acrossthe country. The Post Office has made a commitment to no more branch closure programmes. With the daylight hours increasing and hopefully the weather gettingwarmer, Spring is once again in the air for the un-neutered members ofthe cat population. Although most people are aware that it is important toget their female cats neutered to prevent unwanted pregnancies, there arethose that believe it is not so important to neuter their tom cats. Unfortunately this can lead to heartbreak when the cat goes missing insearch of a member of the opposite sex. In the past week Stephanie hashad phone calls from two people whose cat (both under a year old) hadgone missing. Although both these cats had operations booked, theirhormones kicked in before the appointed day. A male cat will travel along distance to find a receptive female and there are no guarantees hewill be able to find his way home afterwards. These cats very often endup coming into our care several months later with no indication as to

where they came from andsadly the worse for wear. Thereare also the added dangers of crossing busy roads wherethey could be hit by a car andinjured, or worse. Un-neuteredtom cats are also more likely tocontact FIV or FELV shouldthey get into a fight with another tom that has been infected with either of thesenasty conditions.

Having your cat neutered is important and we will always offer vouchers to people on low incomesor benefits to help with the cost. Please pick up the phone and ring ourneutering line if you think you are eligible as it could save a call toStephanie to report your cat is missing.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858.Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number.

If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kittenplease ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

February OfferSafe ‘chips’ for Dogs

The ‘Control of Dogs Act 1992’ states that: every dog shall wear acollar with the name and address of the owner attached to it; this means it is a legalrequirement for your pet to be identified when out in public places.Unfortunately collars often come off or can be removed; the only permanent form ofidentification for your pet is by placing an ID chip into the skin of the ‘scruff’ be-tween the shoulder blades. This simple procedure can be carried out by our vets without the need foranaesthetic or sedation. Puppies are normally ‘chipped’ at second vaccination at 10weeks old. We are offering these id chips at the special price of £15.00 (usually£25.00) for February only.To book an appointment please call 01263 822293.Please bring this coupon with you to claim your discount.

A"Tail" of WonderI wonder why I am sitting here! I wonder why people look at meand walk by! I wonder why I havebeen here so long! I wonder if Ihave done anything wrong!

All these thoughts and more mustbe going through the head of alovely little greyhound called Dana. She has just had her 5th birthdayand is a really sweet and loving girl. She has been really well behavedwhen promoting Homefinders atshows and on walks. Her black coatwith little white flecks all over it stands out and she will make a lovely, lovely pet for someone.

So why I wonder has she been sitting in a kennel for four months watching others around her go to new homes. Dana will make a loving, loyal companion as she adores being fussed and cuddled.

If you think you could give Dana a loving home and would like to meet her, get more information or arrange a home check, contact Homefinding Co-ordinator David Jones (Beeston Regis) through theHomefinders local rate call number 0845 458 3797 or drop in at ourkennels at 51 Cromer Road (A140), Hainford (between Aylsham andNorwich). Interest will be focused on twocrack engines, “Britannia” and“Oliver Cromwell”.

Both played a big role in restoring the UK’s expressroutes, and “Oliver Cromwell”hauled the fast trains from Norwich to London. The PoppyLine Gala will be the first timethese two iconic engines have been seen together inpreservation. Contrasting withthem will be their giant freightcounterpart, the 140-ton “BlackPrince”, which Riddles built tohandle heavy iron ore trains from the ports to the steelworks.

Three other engines from the fertile drawing board of RobinRiddles will also be running, including one – no. 76084 – which has just been restored, and which will become a regular on the Poppy Line.

The British Railways StandardsGala is a first for the heritagerailway movement. GeneralManager Trevor Eady says: “It’s taken a couple of years toorganise this event, and it shouldget our 2013 season off to arousing start!”

Because of the cost of bringingin these giant engines, the railway has had to increaseprices for the event – but there’sa 15% discount on all ticketsbooked in advance before March1st (go to www.nnrailway.co.ukor call 01263 820 800). Rover tickets (which are validall day on all trains) are £21adult, £20 senior citizen and £13child 5 – 15. Under 5s are free, and a family Rover (2 adults + 2children or 3 adults + 1 child) is£54. 2- and 3-day Rover ticketsare also available at discountedprices.

There will be intensive steamservices every day of the Gala.

Healthy 2012 Visitor NumbersFor The Poppy LineDespite one of the wettest summers ever recorded in Britain, despite therival attractions of the Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympics, and despitethe difficult economic situation, over 148,000 passengers travelled onthe Poppy Line in 2012. That’s just 1.5% down on the record number ofthe previous year.

Key to this sparkling performance were the railway’s special events. The programme included the tribute to the Ealing comedy “TitfieldThunderbolt Live!” in June, the Beer Festival in July, the Grand SteamGala at the end of August and the re-enactment ’40s Weekend in Sep-tember (which itself drew record crowds). “Titfield Thunderbolt Live!”

helped to increase June visitors by 2,500 (17%) over the previous June. General Manager Trevor Eady commented “We certainly noticed a dropin passengers over the Olympics – probably a combination of the Gamesand the dreadful weather – but the full-year performance reflects greatcredit on our volunteers and staff.”

British railways’ biggest engines cometogether at Poppy Line Steam Gala

No.70013 “Oliver Cromwell”, once in charge of the fastest trains from Norwich to London.

After the second World War the newly-nationalised British Railways was faced with the need to replace hundreds of worn-out steam engines. Chief engineer Robin Riddles designed a rangeof different standard types, from giant express engines to more humble freight movers. And the Poppy Line is celebrating the finest of these in a special Steam Gala which runs Friday 8th – Sunday 10th March, and Saturday/Sunday 16th and 17th March.

Latest Home Office statistics reveal that crime across Norfolkfell year on year by 8 percent.

The report from the Home Office for the year ending September 2012 shows there were 3,455 less crimes during the period under comparison.*

With a crime rate of 46 crimes per 1000 population, this is well belowthe English national average of 68 crimes per 1000 and makes Norfolkthe joint safest county in England.**

Among the highlights include burglary which reduced by 19%, compared to an 8% national reduction. Burglary from a dwelling was down by 22% across the county and there was a drop of 16% forburglary other than a dwelling. Norfolk has the joint lowest rate of burglaries in England *** with only 4 offences per 1000 population.

Criminal damage reduced by 19% to 7,617 offences, compared to a national reduction of 13%, while robbery reduced by 19% to 189 offences. The year to date from 1 April 2012 to 30 November 2012shows a robbery reduction of 34.1%.

Vehicle crime has reduced by 17% to 2,766 offences compared to a national average of 8%.

All Home Office categories saw reductions in the number of offences in2011/12 compared to the previous year with the exceptions in violenceagainst the person, drug offences and fraud.

Violence against the person year on year increased by 3% - a rise of 277offences. Much of this increase is in the category of causing intentionalharassment, alarm or distress and represents an increase in the activityby police to tackle violent crime and identify offenders.

Drug offences increased by 9% - a rise of 191 offences. This is classedas a ‘preventative crime’ by the force.Consequently, this rise can againbe put down to police action to tackle and disrupt criminal activity tocombat drug crime. Fraud and forgery increased by 11% to 768 offences. This category of crime is one of those currently ‘under-reported’ in Norfolk.

Deputy Chief Constable Simon Bailey said: “The Constabulary canrightly feel very proud of these results, alot of hard work has taken placeto ensure the Constabulary continues to perform exceptionally well. Thecounty remains a very safe place to live and with our partner agencies,we will continue to deliver a high quality service.”

Norfolk Police and Crime Commissioner Stephen Bett said: “Whilst the

figures are somewhat historic, I am pleased to yet again welcome a positive performance by Norfolk Constabulary. I congratulate theChief Constable and all police personnel on their contribution to making Norfolk a safe county. The challenge for me, is funding them to sufficient a level to maintain that.”

* Comparing 2010/11 to 2011/12 (1 October to 30 September) a reduction of 42,697 crimes to 39,242** The same as North Yorkshire*** The same as Cumbria

Conservative councillors at North Norfolk District Council have been criticised forplans to make two car parks in North Walsham 'season ticket only' with a cost of £200 per annum - taking away the existing free parking at the Mundesley Road and Midland Road sites.

North Norfolk District Council has also been attacked for dragging on the issue surrounding the future of North Walsham'scar parks for over a year, and failing to carryout much-needed maintenance at MundesleyRoad.

North Norfolk Labour Party are calling on district councillors to include rethink their car park fees strategy before the 2013/14budget is approved, and to follow neighbouring

councils that have introduced new parkingschemes to encourage more visitors to use ourlocal town centres.

Commenting on the latest news DavidSpencer and Stephen Burke - Labour's candidates for the North Walsham elections –said "This is another Tory tax on parking. But worse than that, this would be anotherblow to North Walsham town centre deter-ring many visitors.

Clearly these councillors have not visitedMundesley Road car park recently and seenall the potholes. It is a disgrace. Also duringthe recent winter weather, the Vicarage Streetcar park was not cleared of snow and carswere trapped in it. It's time that the districtcouncil reviewed its parking policy so that it actually attracts much needed shoppers

to our town centres. A £200 fee for North Walsham is not the answer."

Dear MargaretThere is a desperate shortage of both adopters and foster carersthroughout the UK and more people from all walks of life are needed to come forward. Many people still believe being gay or lesbian, whether they are singleor in a same sex relationship, is a barrier to adopting or fostering, butthis is just a myth.Through our work, the British Association for Adoption & Fostering(BAAF) has met many amazing adoptive parents and foster carersfrom the LGBT community who have given hundreds of children aloving, safe and secure family life. We are, therefore, very pleased tosupport the LGBT Adoption and Fostering Week (4-10 March). There will be information events held across the UK, throughout theweek, which will include opportunities to speak to others who have already become a family through adoption or fostering. So if you are thinking about adoption or fostering, please come along and find out more. Dear MargaretI am from North Walsham town, a former North Walsham High School student, and at 19 years old I am currently a second year law student at Nottingham Law School. I am currently working with a charity called Childreach Internationalwhich works in genuine partnership with local communities in the developing world to help improve children's access to healthcare, education, and child rights and protection.I am raising money for a project called 'the big build'. This is where Ipersonally go to Africa with a small group of people to help construct a school for the less fortunate children. The school I will be buildingwill be in the Berber communities in the Atlas mountains to help givechildren a greater chance in life. I have a target of £1350 to raise for thebuilding materials/resources and have raised around £300 from smallevents such as the 'Boxing Day Dip' and public bucket collections. I am also going to be holding a pub quiz on 22 February, at the BluebellPub, North Walsham at 8.30pm, alongside a raffle, for £1 per person.Other events will follow to raise money for such a good cause.Through your paper I would like to raise readers’ awareness of what I will be doing to help the children in Africa. A Choral Feast at St Peter’sSheringhamOn Saturday 16 March at 7.30pm St Peter’s Church Sheringham willwelcome Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society directed by NathanWaring for their Spring Concert.

The choir, which this year celebrates its 80th Anniversary, will performKarl Jenkins Requiem which was composed by the Welsh musical wiz-ard just a few years ago. Jenkins is now reputed to be the most per-formed living British composer.

Alongside this will be a performance of Five Mystical Songs by RalphVaughan Williams written some 100 years earlier. Ralph VaughanWilliams is arguably the greatest composer Britain has seen since thedays of Henry Purcell. He composed music notable for its power, nobility and expressiveness representing, perhaps, the essence of ‘Englishness’. Five Mystical Songs is a setting of four poems by GeorgeHerbert, from his 1633 collection The Temple: Sacred Poems. The baritone soloist will be Jamie Wright, a choral scholar at York Minster. The concert will also include a short organ recital by Lawrence Tao, organist at Gresham’s School. He will play Bach’s Trio, Prelude andFugue in C Major BWV 545.

NORTH WALSHAM PROBUS CLUBHave you considered a holiday in a historic building, for exampleClytha Castle, Robin Hood’s Hut or even treading in the steps of Cardinal Wolseley at Hampton Court Palace? These properties were the subject of a presentation by Marie Stevenson to North WalshamProbus Club at the January meeting.

Unlike the National Trust which, apart from fundraising and donations, relies upon money bequeathed with the property, the Landmark Trust is concerned with smaller properties, many of which might disappear without the efforts of the Trust.

The Trust was founded 50 years ago by businessman and philanthropistJohn Smith to rescue properties which might be described as ‘too desperate, troublesome or unfashionable to preserve’. Often they are small properties of two or three rooms which are given a new lease of life.

Funds are obtained by letting properties for periods ranging from a few days up to possibly two or three weeks. The lets in Hampton CourtPalace are two smaller properties within the curtilage of the Palace.

Such properties may have architectural or historic interest or evoke interest because of their former inhabitants. The latter include the lateWindsor’s home in France, or Kipling’s in Vermont, USA - Sir JohnBetjeman’s former home, Cloth Fair, in London’s Smithfield, is anotherexample.

Slides were shown of numerous properties including Manor Farm inNorfolk. Clavell Tower in Dorset, Glenmalloch Lodge in Galloway and St. Winifred’s Well in Shropshire, which may also be a place of pilgrimage. A notable example of how the Trust retains the culture of an era is the Lengthman’s Cottage in Warwickshire, with a barrel roof, built for canal workers. Further information may be obtained on the Landmark Trust website, www.landmarktrust.org.uk The Club meets again on the 27 February at North Walsham CommunityCentre. New members are cordially welcome.

Ted Gadsden

Inner Wheel Club of North WalshamAt the December meeting members enjoyed a Christmas FlowerDemonstration given by Mrs. Wendy Pugh, using greenery and berriesfrom her garden. We then had a delicious Lunch accompanied with much chat and laughter. The knitted baby clothes and toys made by friends of Inner Wheel were on display before being shipped to those in need.

In January the club meeting was held at the home of member BarbaraHankin. It is hard to believe our Club was formed nearly 65 years ago,but the first Inner Wheel was founded in Manchester 89 years ago onJanuary 10th. To commemorate this, members made cakes which weredistributed to the residents at Blacksmith's close in Trunch and otherswho now find it difficult to do home baking. These home made goodiesare always accepted with appreciation and delight. New members are always welcome at Inner Wheel and any one interested should telephonethe Secretary on 01692650223.

Motherhood is inspirationfor new local businessA new mum from North Walsham has re-trained as a photographer afterdiscovering a love of photographing babies and children.

Kerri- Alana Burrows, 30, discovered she had a talent for photographyafter taking snaps of her own children. When friends and family startedasking her to take photos for them as well, she decided it was time to re-train and has now set up her own photography company, Pitter PatterPhotos.

As a mum of two young children Kerri was well aware of the problemsparents face when trying to capture the perfect shot. As a result Kerri decided to specialise in maternity, new born baby and child photography. She says: “Parents want a timeless piece of photographythat they can treasure forever, but the perfect image can be difficult to achieve with very young children and babies.

“My experience with my own children has taught me how to makethings comfortable, and I always take plenty of time. Nothing is ever rushed and each photo shoot is completely unique to the family involved.”

Kerri has had a lot of funwith her first photo shoots. They have included dressing newborns in cuteoutfits, babies posing inbaskets and also a ‘cakesmash’ in celebration of a first birthday. Kerri says:“We let the one-year-oldloose with her birthdaycake. She had a great and

very messy time playing with and eating the cake. The resulting photographs are unique and something that will be really treasured.”

Kerri works from a studio in her own home, but is also able to travel to almost any location her customers chose.

For more information on Kerri’s work and availability, visitwww.pitterpatterphotos.co.uk or call 07884 063191.

North Walsham Bonus Cardto give boost to local shoppers and tradersThe local Labour Party thismonth has launched NorthWalsham Bonus Card to encourage local residents toshop in the town and to boostNorth Walsham.

The Bonus Card entitles residents to discounts and special offers with participatingretailers. So far 27 businesses have signed up and more are expected to join. Every business has a different offer for Bonus Card holders.

The North Walsham Bonus Card is being distributed to 7,500 households in North Walsham and nearby villages. Retailers taking part have posters in their windows to remind shoppers to use their card.

It is hoped the new scheme will bring savings to local shoppers, extratrade for North Walsham's retailers, and give a boost to the town's localeconomy.

Stephen Burke and David Spencer, Labour Party representatives inNorth Walsham, explained why they are helping local residents savemoney and support local businesses in North Walsham “Times aretough. Local families face a big squeeze on their income as austeritybites. This is having a real impact on local shops and businesses inNorth Walsham.

That’s why the local Labour Party is launching the North WalshamBonus Card to help local families and businesses and to boost the townby encouraging local shopping.

The Bonus Card offers local residents discounts and special offers withlocal retailers who sign up to the scheme. It’s up to retailers what theyoffer Bonus Card holders. For example, it could be discounts of 5 or10% or special offers which change each week. The Bonus Card is awin-win-win for local families, for local businesses and for North Walsham.”

A couple of shopping issues this month, thefirst up being of particular interest to men.

Men shop differently to women. If we need topurchase specific items we seek out sourcesand buy with the least possible fuss. Womenenjoy shopping, apart from the weekly grindaround the supermarket shelves, they love tobrowse and nowhere more than in fashionstores. If their husbands or partners accompanythem, which when retired is pretty frequent, the men are in for a tough time.

From long experience I know that if I exhibitthe slightest sign of disinterest or restlessness,a palpable tension manifests itself between us.Hanging around aimlessly soon makes my legsache. Acres of space crammed with clothes anddisplays to hold female interest, but nowhere tosit down. In winter, wrapped in cumbersomeoutdoor clothing in a very warm store, adds tomy discomfort. Preoccupied with my pettymiseries it is disconcerting when my nearestand dearest suddenly confronts me with thequestion ‘What do you think of this?’

Caught unaware I have no idea whether I amexpected to approve or disapprove, and domestic harmony for the remainder of the day

hangs in the balance …

When will the retail trade wake up and realisethat if shops provide sufficient handy seatingfor men in their fashion departments, preferably with a few newspapers to peruse, everyone will be happier. Women will be ableto relax and take their time knowing that theold man is comfortable instead of irritable andthat he will be more likely to contentedly nodapproval at a purchase.

The second issue which raises my hackles andmars the shopping experience is the way largeorganisations coach their staff to converse withcustomers in a pre-determined and formulaicmanner which is so insincere that silence ispreferable. A few examples:• ‘How are you today?’• ‘Have you finished all your shopping today?’• ‘Did you find everything you were looking for?’• ‘Enjoy the rest of your day’and so on. We are all peppered with these tritephrases to which we are expected to respond in an equally automatic way, knowing full well neither party gives a toss for either question or the answer. Conventional moves keep our irritation in check.

I am sure that being expected to quote these

insincerities over and overad nauseam during theirshift at work seriously inhibits staff from interacting naturallywith customers. Some of us like a bit of banter, others do not. Most of us dislike over-familiarity, appreciate politeness and a naturalsmile and cannot bear indifference from staff, which is inexcusably rude. Are the retail gurusaiming to train the humanity out of their staffto a point where we will be unable to distinguish between them and the automatedself service tills (which order us about likeDaleks) in the hope that we will get used todealing just with machines and screens? I think they may be. What a dreadful prospect. Huxley’s ‘Brave New World’ is becoming a reality, with a sheep-like proletariat keptamused and controlled by a small, powerful elite.

Before you dismiss me as a miserable old nutter, just think how browsing in shops, a social activity, is rapidly being replaced bybrowsing the internet, a solitary activity, withthe huge social consequences already apparent.

Norfolk is eligible for more money to improve cycling infrastructure, the Liberal Democrat Transport Minister, Norman Baker has announced.

Norwich will be able to bid for a share of the£30m available to improve infrastructure sothat more people have the confidence to takeup cycling. The Broads national park, in partnership with local councils, will also beable to apply for a share of a separate £12mfund to improve conditions for cyclists.

Meanwhile, Norwich station is due to get secure, sheltered bike storage with 242 new spaces as part of a £15m boost to theCommunity Linking Places Fund aimed at improving cycle-rail integration.

Commenting, North Norfolk MP NormanLamb said “Cycling in the Broads is a realpleasure and popular with visitors to the area.By encouraging more people to get on their

bikes, we can help strengthen our local economy. That’s why I will be working hard to secure a slice of the money so we get ourfair share and get those improvements in asquickly as possible. I often cycle in Norfolkand, while we’ve seen improvements in thepast, more work is much needed. This additional money comes at the right time.”

Commenting, Norwich South MP SimonWright said "I’ve had very positive discussionswith Norman Baker and Greater Anglia about

providing more cycling facilities at Norwichstation, and I’m delighted that Norwich is getting the vital infrastructure it needs. Makingour streets safer and encouraging sustainabletransport is so important. This investment iswelcome news for cyclists wishing to use thetrain.”

Commenting further, Norman Baker said “Cycling is a great way to get around. Not only is it good for the environment and theeconomy, but evidence shows that with peoplewho cycle living longer than those who do notit is also great for your health. The country’ssuccess at the Olympics and in the Tour deFrance has brought cycling right into the public’s imagination and there is a huge appetite for better cycling provisions. This announcement capitalises on that and adds tothe significant investment that we have alreadymade to allow more people to get on theirbikes.”

JAZZ WINTER WARMERThe Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band will be raising the temperature at The Crown Inn, Banningham, on Sunday24 February from 1.30 p.m. The Band plays foot-tappingtraditional jazz and is one of the best of its type in the region. It is always well received at The Crown.

An added attraction on 24 February will be guest bassplayer, Liz Underdown. The band’s regular bass player is working abroad and it’s always a delight to have Liz “stand in”. Liz is a full-time music teacher and, in addition to being an excellent bass player, plays pianoand trumpet. Liz is the daughter of the band’s guitaristand banjo player, Peter Gregory. A “chip off the oldblock”. The remainder of the line-up will be: John Gooding (cornet), Tim Densham (clarinet and saxophones), Bill Brewer (trombone), Vic. Brown (drums).

Admission is always free at The Crown, but if you would like a table for lunch it is advisable to book.Tel: 01263 733534.

Council Leader Tom Fitzpatrick announcedRhodri Oliver as the new Deputy Leader forNorth Norfolk District Council (NNDC) at the Full Council meeting on 23 January.

He succeeds Cllr.FitzPatrick, who wasappointed Leader ofthe Council in December. It wasalso announcedthat Russell Wrightwould be joining theNNDC Cabinet.

Educated in Holt andliving in Aylmerton, the new Deputy

Leader was elected as Ward Member for Sheringham South in the District Council elections in May 2011. At 22, he is NNDC’syoungest member, the 2011 council electionscoinciding with his final exams at ImperialCollege, London, from where he successfullygraduated with a degree in physics. He is

currently studying for a law degree and is akeen racket sports player, representing Cromerin squash, table tennis and tennis. He will be a candidate for the Sheringham division in the county council elections in May.

Commenting, Cllr. Oliver said, “I have been actively involved in politics for over five years and am interested in all areas of local government. North Norfolk is a wonderful place but we know that as a councilwe can help our communities to make it evenbetter. I am particularly keen to show thatyoung people can make a real difference and I hope that my appointment will encouragemore young people to get actively involved in their local communities.”

Russell Wright, 53, Member for the AstleyWard, which is centred on Melton Constable, and who runs a well-known design and buildlandscaping company, will join the six existingmembers of the ruling Conservative Cabinet,Tom FitzPatrick (Leader), Rhodri Oliver

(Deputy Leader),Angie Fitch-Tillett,Trevor Ivory, JohnLee and WyndhamNortham. Cllr.Wright was a member of NNDC1991-1995, he wasre-elected in 2011and is currently alsoa member of NorfolkCounty Council.

Cllr. FitzPatrick said, “I am delighted to announce these two new appointments. Cllr. Wright will bring to the Cabinet manyyears of experience at both District and County authority level. He has solid businessexperience and this will be of real benefit in our work to help the economy in these challenging times. Cllr. Oliver has provenhimself to be very able in his time on Cabinetand I am looking forward to working furtherwith him in the coming months. I believe boththese appointments will be welcome news.”

The bad weather has taken its toll on our roads and pavements. I amworried about how quickly repairs will be done; money is incrediblytight at the County Council and I have been finding for some time nowthat such work is being delayed longer and longer. Someone asked mewhy, with all the reduction in services of recent years, the Council Tax has not been cut. The answer is that, as well as the Council Tax,Councils receive income through grants from Central Government andthese grants have been cut drastically.

During the icy weather I had a few calls asking why the Council grit thisparticular road but not that one. Where they grit is not my decision, though I do my best to influence. Getting new gritting routes is veryhard and I was pleased to get Brick Kiln (where I have asked for an extension to the route) added to the top priority list last year.

I am trying to help the Gymnastics Club find a permanent home with exclusive use. The latest idea, which is quite promising, is somewhere at

Coltishall sit the County Council has just bought the ex RAF site. With a waiting list of 200 it is really important they find a home.

Being Chair of Governors at the High School continues to take up moretime than I had expected. Something I have been really impressed by in my regular visits is how purposeful the School is, and the good relationships both amongst students and between students and staff.

Many of you will have read about Derrick Murphy, the former Conservative Leader of the County Council, being censured by the Standards Committee for his behaviour. We could do without such political shenanigans which have wasted an awful lot of resources andmade County Hall a pretty nasty place in which to operate.

Please contact me on 01692 402003/[email protected] if youhave any issues you think I can help with. Also take a look at my blogwww.cllrpaulmorse.wordpress.com

Pirate’s Andy Marsh, Jack Bramwelland Barry Evans hosted NWSCB’sDennis Elliott, Simon Halliday andPaul Price. In the reverse fixture at thestart of the season in which the samesix players were involved, Pirates hadsuffered a heavy 9-1 defeat. Howeverthis time Marsh came from two setsdown to win the opener against Elliott7-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-5, 11-9 in a per-formance that earned him the player ofthe match accolade and which gavethe Pirates the initiative they neededfor the rest of the evening. Bramwellthen defeated Halliday in five, before

yet another deciding set followed as Price took the first point for the visitors with a topsy-turvy 12-10, 5-11, 3-11, 11-3, 11-6 win over Evans.Bramwell then defeated Elliott 2-10,11-9, 11-8 and Marsh beat Price infour. Halliday recovered from two setsdown to deny Evans and Bramwellbeat Price in four. Evans then playedhis third five-setter of the night, butthis time it went the way of the Pirateas Elliott was left with nothing toshow for the evening – Evans winning11-6, 4-11, 5-11, 11-7, 11-8. Marshconquered Halliday in straight, but

therewas consolation

for the NWSCB player inthe doubles as he teamed upwith Price for a straight sets win overEvans and Bramwell. However thenight this time belonged to Pirates astheir 7-3 win was a big reversal of thetwo team’s previous meeting.
