North Walsham Times 420 April 13th 20134

It is now one year since Rose Villa Publicationsbegan publishing the North Walsham Times,Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent!“In that time we have increased our circulation to 18,000 copies fortnightly from 15,600, which has helped us to reach readers from Aylsham to Holt, from Mundesley to Weybourne and many other outlying villages. I would just like to say thank you to all our advertisers, staff and readers for helping us to grow the magazines and to make them the most read magazines in North Norfolk.”

- Eric Hayton, proprietor.

With the clocks having gone forward at the endof last month, householders across Norfolk arebeing urged not to make it easy for potentialthieves.

Officers are advising people to pay extra attention to home and vehicle security with the onset of lighter nights – often seen as anopportunist time for this type of crime.

Chief Superintendent Nick Dean said: “Mostthefts are carried out by opportunist thieves. The coming summer months can bring withthem thieves on the look-out for lapses insecurity – such as doors and windows left openor property left on display at beauty spot carparks. People are advised to be aware andmake use of simple crime prevention methodswhich deprive thieves of the opportunity tosteal.”

Norfolk Constabulary offers the followingadvice to residents:

WINDOWS• Always lock your windows when you

leave the house. • Remove the keys and keep them in a safe

place. However, everyone should know where the keys are kept so they can escape in an emergency.

DOORS• Keep your front and back doors locked or

in view when you are at home. • Use or consider fitting a door chain and

spy hole - a chain allows you to speak to the caller without opening the door fully and the spy hole also you to see who is at the door.

• Fit five lever mortice locks to all external doors.

• Check your cylinder locks on patio/plastic doors and ensure they are snap and bump resistant - a local Master Locksmith can advise if you are not sure.

KEYS• Never leave a spare key in a convenient

hiding place such as under the doormat, burglars know all the usual hiding places.

• Never leave your house or car keys in or near a door or window.

Attention should also be paid to the security ofSHEDS AND GARAGES and to the propertystored within.

PARKED CARS – especially those left in remote areas such as beauty spots – should be left locked and secure with no property lefton display and satellite navigation devices, car audio equipment, cameras, handbags andlaptops should be removed from the vehicleentirely.

People attendingLARGE SCALEEVENTS or out andabout in busy areasshould be mindful of

thieves and keep handbags closed and mobilephones out of sight and kept securely on theirperson.

Chief Superintendent Dean added: “Norfolk is an extremely safe place to live and yourchances of being a victim of such crimes stillremain extremely low, but you should considermaking your house look like someone is athome. Don’t become an easy target. We would also encourage people to be a goodneighbour - If anyone is spotted acting suspiciously in your neighbourhood, call thepolice."

Anyone with information about thieves operating in their area should contact Norfolk Constabulary on 101 orCrimestoppers anonymously by calling 0800 555 111.

100 Wonderful days of schoolPupils at Millfield Primary School in North Walsham had a fantastic day on 15th February celebrating a hundred days of school. Each class planned a maths day of activities, which centred around the number 100. There was an open morning for theparents to participate in number related activities in the classrooms. Each class createda ‘100’ display, which was show-cased in the school hall in the afternoon for all thechildren to enjoy. There was also a special sharing assembly to celebrate some of theamazing work and to announce the winners of the ‘100 competition’.

The competition was open to all of the pupils and the challenge was to design a posteror artwork using different types of mediums to celebrate the 100 days of Maths inschool. It was hard to pick the winners as there were so many to choose from but thelucky winners were Joshua Bloom, Tegan Hicks and Molly McCrory the runners upwere Ellen Weston, Charlie Paget and Dylan Reid-Webb. Molly McCrory; one of thewinners; said “I had a lot of fun helping my class design a giant dog bone. We thenstuck 100 dog pictures onto it and displayed it in the hall. I was so glad to be one ofthe winners of the competition there were so many designs!”

Head Teacher Mrs Harazdiuk said “It was great to see so many parents enjoyingworking on Maths activities with their children. The day was a mathematical treat!”

When cats come into care they experience a completely different environment to that which they have been used to. Some join us fromhomes where they have received lots of loving care, others have beenbadly treated by their owners and some have been living outside forsome time. Although they will be treated with kindness and affection, receive regular meals and have any problems/conditions attended to theyare confined to an area much smaller that what they are used to. Somesettle into their new accommodation straight away while others will taketime to accept the changes in their lives. imid cats usually benefit fromhaving somewhere to hide and provision is made for them to do so.Some others react by hissing and growling and we find the best policy is to ignore the cats, get on with the feeding and cleaning and they willsoon come round. We find it is best for the cat to settle at its own paceand this always works, given time.

The same applies but in reverse when a cat leaves us with its new family. They are leaving us to take up residence in a far larger space with lots of new noises and sometimes new companions (feline or otherwise). This is particularly true when applied to kittens who may been with ussince birth. Sometimes a cat will arrive at its new home and react as ifit has always been there but this is the exception rather than the rule.

We usually suggest the cat is confined to one or two rooms to beginwith, their food dishes and litter trays placed in quiet corners (but not together) and allowed to get used to their new home gradually. Somecats may hide and Stephanie gets calls from worried new owners whenthis happens. She advises them that it is best to let them come out whenthey feel comfortable to do so and just give them time. We cannot emphasise enough how important it is not to worry if your new cat is not immediately a lap cat but that with time and patience they will settleand be the cat you were looking for. If you acknowledge this fact thetransition period will be so much easier for your family and the cat.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwal-sham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving a callon the above number.

21 Cornish Way, North Walsham NR28 0AW

This week’s recipe comes from the fiery imagination of David Chattenden, my chef departie here at the Grove. He’s found his way to the quiet backwater of Cromer from the hustle, bustle and bright lights of Norwich, which of course means he uses some big words from time to time, but we usually justunderstand what he’s saying and I have to saythat he does make the most incredible stickytoffee pudding.

The season is upon us after a long, cold winterand the Grove is already very busy. District 1080 Governor, Trevor Sayer, visitedRotarians in North Walsham last month. He is pictured with President John Watts, and two Rotarians who represent over half theRCNW's 66 year history - George Hawkes(Hon Member - joined 1979) and Geoff Harrison (joined 2008).

Like all Governors, Trevor holds office for a year and during that time enjoys visiting the 77 clubs in his district which comprisesNorfolk, Suffolk, Cambridge and some parts of Hertfordshire – quite a challenge in itself.

Trevor’s year had a number of projects with a strong emphasis on young people. These include the “Wheelie Good Idea” designed tomaximise the legacy of the 2012 Olympics andParalympics through the purchase of sportswheel chairs. In this Rotarians are sponsored totravel between clubs using non-standard meansincluding running (North Walsham), by sea(Cromer & Sheringham) and of course bywheelchair (Aylsham).

He was upbeat about the work of Rotary International to eradicate polio from the world- something which it was on track to do as

early as 2018. Onelocal fundraisingproject was a partnership withStokes Sauces and involved Rotariansfrom clubs across the District.

Trevor recognised thework of Rotary inNorth Walsham andthanked members for their work in progressing his andwider Rotarian initiatives at homeand overseas. Hewent on to discusschanges in the

structure of the worldwide Rotary movement. He was given a warm vote of thanks and applauded my members.

Trevor is a chemist by profession and livesnear Stowmarket. He is a member of the Ipswich Wolsey rotary club. His visit broughttwo figures from English history face to face –Cardinal Wolsey, Henry VIII’s minister whofounded Ipswich School and Horatio Nelson, almost 300 years later, who went to school inNorth Walsham at the Paston School.

Rotary is the largest service organisation in theworld with a membership of 1.2m men andwomen in 34000 clubs worldwide. Rotariansask “What would it take to change the world?”and believe that this starts with a commitmentto Service Above Self.

The Rotary Club of North Walsham meetsevery Monday at the Scarborough HillHotel, Old Yarmouth Road, North Walsham,5.30 for 6.15pm.

Art and Photography tripto AmsterdamPaston Sixth Form College Art and Photography students have returnedfrom a brilliant trip to Amsterdam. A key component of their course isvisiting galleries in the UK and Europe. In total 37 students and fourstaff travelled by ferry and train to Amsterdam.

Students with teaching staff

Highlights of the trip included visits to the Stedeliijk Museum, The VanGogh Museum and the Foam Photography gallery. Unexpected snowmade it very tricky for students taking photographs on the trip but theymet the challenge and used all their skills to complete the work on theirtrip. The Art department have already started planning their next trip toBerlin.

Lizards and Dragons at Little Nick’s NurseryThe children in Nursery and Reception at St. Nicholas House School,North Walsham, enjoyed a visit from The Seal and Bird Sanctuary. Some of the children were brave enough to see, stroke and handle a dwarf monitor lizard which felt “ticklish”, a bearded dragon whichwas “warm and very prickly” and a boa constrictor which was “verylong and heavy.” They also witnessed a tame rook defending her owner,a kestrel flyingacross the schoolhall to grab its mealof a chick’s leg andan eagle owl watching them asthey left the hall atthe end. This visitformed one of thehighlights at the endof the Spring Term.Other activities included an Easterdisco, and EasterBunny egg hunt andan Easter assemblywhen they woretheir Easter crownsand showed theirpictures of chickensto the parents whowere invited to attend the service.

Dear people of Antingham, Bacton, Gimingham,Knapton, Mundesley, Northrepps, Overstrand, Paston,Sidestrand, Swafield, Trimingham and Trunch, andsurrounding areasI am writing this letter to all of you, just to let you know that I am standing as a Labour candidate for the forthcoming County Councilelections. I am doing this, to give people who would normally voteLabour, or would like to change their voting habits, the opportunity to use their Democratic right to do so.

My name is Elizabeth Cornwall, better known as Liz. I have lived inNorth Walsham for the past 20 years, with my husband Tom. I am nostranger to local politics, as I have served 8 years on Town and Districtcouncils and served 2 years as Town Mayor. I am very passionate aboutgiving 100% of myself to a job, and if I fail, I let you know why.

Unlike most candidates I am not delivering leaflets, or canvassing, because my views are well known to most. Representing the electorate, means just that to me, irrespective of your political views. I am givingyou the opportunity for change. It will be up to you if you wish thatchange.

Should you wish to contact me, you can do so, by telephoning 01692406477, or by email at [email protected], and I will get backto you.

North Norfolk beach huts and chalets– get 50% off weekly hireHaving a base by the sea makes spending time at the beach so much easier, whether you use it to store beach essentials, as a place to get changed after a dip, or just want to shelter with a flask and a book from bracing breezes. And North NorfolkDistrict Council (NNDC) is giving local residentsand visitors the opportunity to enjoy a seaside beachhut or chalet at half price from early April to the end of June this year.

Subject to availability, this very special offer applies to weekly lets of beach hutsin Mundesley, Sheringham and Cromer from 6 April to 29 June. Prices normallystart at £45 per week, so some lucky people will be able to enjoy a hut or chaletfor a week on one of north Norfolk’s fabulous beaches for less than £23, makingit just over £3 a day, for up to a maximum of three weeks!

NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Corporate Assets, Rhodri Oliver, said, “Our fabulous resort beaches are always busy and we rarely have enoughbeach huts or chalets available to satisfy demand in the main summer holiday period. But earlier and later in the year we usually have a few vacancies. Thisyear we thought it would be better to make them available at a lower price, sothat they could all be used and enjoyed by more people. I hope lots of people will be able to take up this very special offer.”

How to promote and expand on community carschemes to help people get to their doctor andhospital appointments was the topic of discus-sion at a meeting in Cromer last month organ-ised by local MP Norman Lamb.

There are a number of such schemes operatingin different parts of North Norfolk, all onslightly different lines. Many fundraise to helpcover costs and some also run social events inthe local community. All depend on a pool ofvolunteer drivers, many of them retired, and adedicated co-ordinator to match those driversup with requests for transport.

For example: • Aldborough Village Care also runs a lunch

club for local residents• Holt Caring Society covers Holt surgery

patients and has been going for twenty years or more

• Ludham Village car scheme, covering Ludham parish was established in February 2012 and since it began has provided transport to over 300 appointments

• North Norfolk Community Transport (formerly North Walsham Area Community Transport) is probably the largest scheme, covering North Walsham and the surrounding area

• Potter Heigham Good Neighbour scheme also provides transport for people to do their shopping and runs a free monthly tea

afternoon• Wroxham, Hoveton and Belaugh

Community Care has been going since1986 and covers transport to any medical appointment for patients of the local practice

However, in some areas – notably Sheringhamand Cromer – there is nothing at all, meaningpeople who cannot drive are forced to rely ontaxis or public transport to get to appointmentsat the local surgery and the Norfolk & Norwichhospital.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said: “My motherwas lucky enough to have the Holt Caring So-ciety scheme available to help her get to hospi-tal appointments in recent months. It is afantastic scheme, very simple, very local, butof real practical benefit. It is a lifeline for peo-ple like my mum who does not drive herself.Schemes such as this in other communities areinvaluable for local residents. However, it is alottery - some people are not so fortunate. I amregularly contacted by constituents about thisissue. Public transport from rural North Nor-folk into Norwich for a hospital appointment issimply not a realistic option for people. Thequestion is, what can we do for ourselves toimprove the situation? The existing schemeswere set up by individuals who saw a problemin their community, and saw a simple way tofix it. We will be looking at whether there isscope for groups to work together to help cover

the gaps. What more can we do to promote andextend existing schemes, and what support canwe provide to people who may be thinkingabout establishing a scheme in their own area? The meeting was a chance to get the relevantpeople talking to each other and find answersto these questions. The community carschemes we have in North Norfolk show whatyou can do with a small group of like-mindedpeople focused on finding practical solutions.”

Tracy Jessop, Assistant Director for Environ-ment, Transport & Development at NorfolkCounty Council said “Small vehicle schemesare an important component of the transportmix and a valuable resource, particularly forhealth transport. In challenging financial times,it’s vital that we all work together to make bestuse of limited resources. I'm hoping this will bethe first step in getting wider provision in northNorfolk.”

Mrs Spindler, a resident of Worstead who hasused the North Norfolk Community Transportscheme, said "The MediCar service is a life-line. I have no transport of my own and my sonis at work all day, so he cannot take me to thehospital. I don't know what I would do withoutit as there is no bus to take me." She went on topraise the "helpfulnessness of the drivers, inparticular the "care and attention" that theygive her.

Maria Ball has done theright thing – Norman LambMaria Ball, Chair of the East of England Ambulance Trust, hasresigned with immediate effect. The announcement comes afterthe Trust was found to be failing to meet key standards on thecare and welfare of people who use the service, during a recentinspection by the Care Quality Commission.

There have been long-running complaints and concerns aboutambulance waiting times in rural parts of the county. The CQCreport praised frontline staff but highlighted slow responsetimes to emergency calls and a “significant inequity of service”between rural and urban areas. It is the first time an ambulancetrust anywhere in the country has been found to be failing onthis measure.

Norman Lamb, MP for North Norfolk, has been pursuing thisissue relentlessly for more than a year and has met with theTrust several times since October 2011. He was promised actionplans and improvements, but these promises were not delivered.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said “I believe that Maria Ball hasdone the right thing. The performance of the Trust has causedenormous concern in Norfolk. It’s essential now that we getstrong leadership to turn this Trust around and to ensure thatlocal people have a service that they can rely on.”

I suppose I shall be castigated for saying thisbut, for me, the fact that Comic Relief is finallyover and television and radio programmes can,for a brief period, cease battering our collectiveconsciences is the real relief. It may be heresyto say so, but I don’t think I am alone in beingheartily sick and tired of the seemingly endlessprocession of habitual do-gooding eventswhich increasingly dominate the annual round.

Each major event – Children in Need, SportRelief, Comic Relief – expands its time, effortand scope each year (just like Christmas whichkicks off in September) so that the periods ofcalm in between when the exhortations andhype die down, become steadily shorter. It has reached a stage when I refer to BBC 1 as ‘the charity channel’. What is more I have a feeling that it is a means of providing our taxpayer-funded state broadcaster with an easyway of filling schedules with the home-madeantics of both public and celebrity participants, none of whom requires any fees because ‘it’sfor charity, innit?’ Quite frankly it has become

officially organised national begging with menaces on a massive scale : ‘Give us yourbloomin’ wonga’ (or we will label you selfish, mean and heartless by default).

What sort of society have we become? Every organised event, for sport, entertainment or amusement now attractspeople seeking sponsorship for a ‘worthycause’ whilst taking part. This constantdemand for our attention and ourmoney has, I think, become excessiveand instead of a warm feelingengendered by a naturalimpulse to help those lessfortunate, we end up eitherbeaten into submission orso hardened to it all thatwe just shut our senses to the continual blandishments and batten down the hatches over our naturalkind instincts in order

to cope with the whole problem of charityoverkill.

What, if anything, can be done to scale it backto a sensitive level?

On 28 March we began the celebrations of 55years since the original "Bradfield FlowerClub" was formed in Bradfield.

A specially made cake was cut by Chairman,Jennifer Adcock and enjoyed by the memberswith their afternoon tea.

Before the meeting began, a cheque for £1000was presented to Jamie Edghill from the EastAnglian Air Ambulance. We think Jamie mustbe a secret flower arranger, as he stayed (andtook photographs) throughout a wonderfuldemonstration by Area Demonstrator, JeanCrane - or maybe it was her hilarious stories

that kept him - either way - we now know that the Air Ambulance made a call to NorthWalsham during the meeting whilst Jamie wasactually with us, which aptly demonstrates justhow much the Air Ambulance is relied uponthese days.

To continue the celebrations this year, our next meeting will be at the Community Centre, where Alan Gray from East Ruston will bedemonstrating his unique style of flower arranging with, I am sure, lots of tips andknowledge to share about his plants at EastRuston. We can't wait. Doors open at 1.30pmfor refreshments and retail therapy and Alan

will begin his demonstration at 2.30pm. Allwelcome to pay on the door or you can reservea ticket by calling 01692 404628 or 01692500440.

During the next few months, we have some ofour favourite demonstrators back to entertainus together with one or two brand-new demonstrators that we will see for the firsttime. Melissa Sheldrake from Tacolneston is a'newbie' and will demonstrate "The Languageof Flowers" on 23 May when we are back atthe Catholic Hall. Then in June Joanne Poulteris visiting again from Peterborough. In Julyand August we have a garden meeting and atrip to Pensthorpe, after which we welcomeback the wonderfully funny & ever-popularJulia Knights with "Let’s Dance the NightAway".

So lots of interest coming your way - just comealong to any of our meetings for £4 or, if youprefer, you can join for a whole year of floralentertainment for £20. We look forward to welcoming you to our friendly club.

Millfield Primary School in North Walsham was bursting with pride onWednesday 20 March. All of the children and staff took part in a veryspecial ‘Celebration Day’, where they invited parents and the schoolGovernors to come and join in with the activities.

The celebration was to mark all of the hard work and drive shown by the pupils, staff, Governors and parents of the school, which culminatedin the school receiving a ‘Good ‘ rating from a recent Ofsted inspection. Mrs Harazdiuk; the Head Teacher said, “When the school was lastinspected in February 2011, we were judged to be Satisfactory overallwith some aspects of Good. Over the last two years there has been determination and drive to further improve the school and this was

recognised by the school achieving an overall grade of Good with all aspects being at least Good. We now have the determination and ambition to make Millfield an Outstanding school. This drive for improvement has only been possible due to the hard work and commitment of the staff, pupils, parents and Governors of the school.”

The pupils created different pieces of art and other media to demonstratewhy they thought Millfield was such a great school. Some of these included persuasive posters, headbands, stained glass effect windowswhich spelt out ‘Go Millfield’ and some children even created their ownMillfield rap song. The event was rounded off with a 300 blue balloonrelease on the school field and then an open afternoon for parents tocome and share in some of the displays in the school hall. It was certainly a day to be proud of!

Petition set up for Vodafonecustomers to detail angerover signal problemsA petition has been set-up to record comments about the on-going Vodafone signal problems that have continued to inconvenience businesses and traders, tourists, and residents in the north Norfolk area since October.

Last month Vodafone assured customers that allfaulty hardware at localmasts had been replaced -but could not guarantee thatfaults wouldn't occur furtherdown the line. And over theEaster weekend customersliving across Mundesley,North Walsham, Aylsham,Cromer, and Sheringham have suffered from the issue again.

North Norfolk Labour Party has since set up a petition - www.vodafonenfk.com - which it hopes will detail public anger to provide to Vodafone representatives, after being approached by disappointed business owners and residents.

Jono Read, press officer for North Norfolk Labour Party, said: "Thestatements from Vodafone are simply not good enough. They are expecting customers to fulfil their contract with the firm - but Vodafonecannot offer guarantees that they will their contract with their customersin north Norfolk.

Vodafone representatives are offering conflicting advice, with some asking customers to shell out more money for the equipment to helpboost signals, while others are getting theirs free. They need to compensate all involved.

We are particularly concerned by the way Vodafone are treating some of those trying to leave their contracts early - with one local lady threatened with debt collectors and ending up in a small claims over the issue."

Congratulations and Celebrations!

Perhaps one of the advantages of a group comprising older member is that while theymay not possess the same vitality as youngerorganisations, they usually have plenty ofmemories. This was demonstrated when EricJones, a member of North Walsham ProbusClub addressed his colleagues last month atthe Community Centre.

His secondary education was at Wimbledonthen later at Sir Joseph Williamson School atRochester where he later taught mathematicsfor 35 years. This was interspersed by a periodof National Service, which initially led him toOxford for six months where, whilst in theArmy, he lived as an undergraduate studyingelectronics. This was followed by a War OfficeSelection Board at Ullapool in the Cairngormsto assess his potential as an officer. Although

he was unsuccessful in being offered a commission in the Corps, he neverthelessstayed in the Royal Corps of Signals and was eventually drafted to Greece, via Naples in 1945. He described his main activity asmaintaining the communications ‘with a screw driver and a pair of pliers’.

His experiences evidently left him with some profound impressions, not least the advice he was given regarding their behaviouras a visiting force. The suggestion that the behaviour of the German forces left somethingto be desired in terms of humanity may be an understatement. He was present during theimmediate aftermath of the Second World Warwhen communist uprisings created fear that the country might fall into the communist bloc. Some may remember that this was

subsequently followed by the ‘Colonels Revolt’. Eric returned to the UK to be demobbed in August 1947 and married Rosinain 1950.

He also returned to Sir Joseph WilliamsonSchool, where he was to teach for 35 years, a period of his life which was not without itslighter moments, especially when playing various parts in productions of Gilbert & Sullivan’s light operas.

Performing at the Globe Theatre, Rochesterand Chatham Dockyard this gave him an opportunity to develop a talent for singing insuch well known productions as ‘The Mikado’,‘H.M.S. Pinafore’ and the ‘Major General’.

The next meeting will be on the 24 April at theNorth Walsham Community Centre, when newmembers will be cordially welcomed.

Those who served on merchant ships have been a largely forgotten part of World War Two. Yet without their sacrifice, Britain could not have survived for more than a few days.

Time is running out to collect the stories of those brave men who served in the Merchant Navy on dangerous convoys across the Atlantic, into thefrozen Arctic, down the hazardous North Sea channels or further afield in the Med or Far Eastern seas.

We are running a project supported by Heritage Lottery Fund and would like any reader to send us information about a relative, friend or neighbour who served during the war. Perhaps you are a veteran yourself with a story to tell. We are calling our project 'Unsung Heroes - Not Sinking Without Trace'. I hope that you can help us make sure this does not happen and that history is fair to the men of the British Merchant Navy.

Please get in touch via [email protected] Thank you, Mike Levy

Red Noses and Potatoes!Well Red Nose day was certainly a little different this yearfor the pupils and staff at Millfield Primary School inNorth Walsham. Not only were they dressing up in something funny or something red or in some cases amixture of both, but they had a visit from a tractor andNorman Lamb!

The school is taking part in a national competition organised by the Potato Council of Great Britain and onRed Nose day schools across the country were plantingpotato seeds to look after until judging on the 29 June. Theaim is to see who can grow the largest potatoes. We had alocal farmer Tim Papworth, who came into the school totalk to the children on how to look after their potatoes.

Much to the delight of Sycamore class he also boughtalong his tractor, the children were then lucky enough tosit in the cab and pretend to drive it, a first for most ofthem. Then Mr Norman Lamb the North Norfolk MP whois a huge supporter of the school, came in and helped thechildren plant their seeds. The school helped raise £400pounds with cake sales, donations and a class coin trail for Comic Relief. It was a productive day all round.

Create a Seaside Sally at HenryBlogg MuseumThe RNLI Henry Blogg Museum in Cromer is holding a free drop-in creative session onSaturday 13 April. Children are encouraged tovisit the museum to make their own seasidefavourite.

Seaside Sallys are often seen at seaside resorts and consist of decorated frames withpeep-holes for the face. The museum has stockpiled a vast selection of beads, papers, fabrics and much more for children to designholiday-makers, pirates, mermaids and RNLIlifeboat men. The session will run between10am and 4pm.

This crafty activity compliments a current exhibition at the museum which looks at thehistory of souvenirs and considers what makesobjects special to us. Keepsakes, Key Ringsand Kiss Me Quick! : A History of Souvenirsaims to create a feeling of nostalgia by recalling holiday memories whilst also creating new ones.

The exhibition includes plenty of child friendly activities. These activities rangefrom dressing up hats to a strong man Seaside Sally, a Punch and Judy theatre andvisitors can again be artistic by designing a postcard.

Jacqui Palmer, Museum Manager said: ‘We look forward to welcoming children andtheir parents and hope to see a range of exciting creations.’

Exhibitions Assistant Rebecca Fletcher said: ‘I hope to see lots of families takingpart. I had a lot of fun making a mermaid Seaside Sally and I am certain others willtoo. It will be a great opportunity for lots of family photographs.’

Admission to the museum and drop-in session is free, but donations are always appreciated.

Brancaster Harbour is such a magical place, particularly during the summer holidays, myfriends and I would spend every waking hourdown there, either sailing when the tide was in,or mud sliding in the creeks when the tide wasout. Our washing machine suffered under thestrain of all my muddy clothes and my bed wasalways full of sand - but I had the best timegrowing up in Brancaster Staithe and wouldn’thave swapped it for the world.”

Treasure Hunt finds aFlash Mob in Cromer! The Rocket House Cafe saw Becky Betts of Norfolk Radio’s TreasureHunt Show surprised by a singing flash mob on Easter Monday.

Becky Betts was following her last set of clues for the programme, whenshe was told that she had to sing before an audience before she could begiven the next clue. Becky was at the busy Rocket House Cafe onCromer’s sea front, when she was told she had to sing Do-Re-Mi fromThe Sound of Music.

Becky was worried that her singingwould put customers off their coffee and scones, but was assuredthat all would be well. As she beganto sing, customers joined in andsoon more than twenty members of the Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Societywere in full voice. The Cromer andSheringham Operatic and DramaticSociety (CSODS) are putting on themusical, The Sound of Music at thePavilion Theatre at the end of May.An emotional Becky was handed tissues as well as the next clue as thesong ended. As she left to get to the final clue of the show, the membersof CSODS went out to the radio car and sang, So Long, Farewell, asBecky drove off to complete the Treasure Hunt.

The Sound of Music will be at the Pavilion Theatre, Cromer from 25thMay to 1st June.

Evacuee Day at The BelfryMonday 25 March saw The Belfry C of E Primary School in Overstrand take a leap back in time.

The event was organised as part of the school History Topic, Within Living Memory. Ten members of the Poppyline Education Team led activities including Dig for Victory, ARP Billeting and Rationing wherethe children made a lunch prepared by themselves using food similar to that available during WW2. With chocolate biscuits and crisps missing from their usual lunch the children started to understand howfood which is now taken for granted, was so different then. The childrenlearned about growing food and took home the beans and peas theyplanted in pots.

The children also experienced being left to one side as their friends were chosen and joined a new family and themes were running in theclassrooms which the children had asked to study including childhood, homes and re-housing and war torn Britain in the 1940s.

The busy and happy day ended with the school getting together in thehall to watch a black and white silent film and a good sing song from thefirst and second World Wars.

Briston’s MusicalMulti-Handyman!Despite the cold weather, the Briston Organ Show last monthwas still a well-attended affair, with a warm audience thrilling tothe superb playing of top keyboard artist Jon Smith, who hadtravelled down in atrocious weather all the way from Sheffield!

Using a Yamaha Tyros keyboard and a Wersi performer organ, he gaveus two hours of solid top quality live music - at times even playing bothinstruments at the same time, as well as singing!

His programme included the ever popular 'Forgotten Dreams', butuniquely played as a waltz(!), the bouncy 'Come Follow The Band' from Barnum, some stunning vocals with 'The Nearness of You' and 'S'Wonderful', toetappers like 'Save The Last Dance For Me' and 'BlackIs Black', and for organ enthusiasts we got a good selection of bouncy'Blackpool' numbers played in true Wurlitzer style! His gentle humourfilled in the gaps between items, and the audience all roared for an encore as the evening came to a close.

MC Mick Leary told the audience that the show had raised £120 for theCopeman Centre Funds, and nearly £60 for the Air Ambulance, so theevening was a good result for everyone.

There are about eight organ shows in Briston each year - the next is on Friday 10 May, when top UK organist Steve Hubble will be at theCopeman Centre for the first time.

Tickets are just £6, with under 16s getting in for just £3. Advance booking is always essential, and you can reserve your ticketsnow by telephoning Carol on 01263 860844.

Perhaps we might see you there as well next time!

A spokesman for the Red Arrows said “Everyyear the number of requests far outstrips the resources available. We do look at all optionsto support as many events throughout the coun-try as possible”.

The spokesman confirmed that the Carnival’sbid for the Red Arrows in 2014 will not be hindered by this year’s outcome.

The Red Arrows who have been coming toCromer since 1981 are traditionally one of thehighlights of Carnival Day. Over the past 31years Cromer has been very fortunate to havethem attend the Carnival over 25 times.

Carnival Chairman Tony Shipp said “We are obviously disappointed that the Red Arrowswill not be with us this year. The first questionI am always asked at the beginning of the yearis "have we got the Red Arrows? They have become synonymous with Cromer Carnivaland whilst the Carnival Committee can find the money to pay for them we will continue putting in the application each September.”

He added “We are working hard on trying toget another exciting aerial display for this year

and will do our best to get The RedArrows back again for 2014.”

Plans are well underway for this year’s Carnival which looks set to be anotherbumper year. Acts already confirmedfor Carnival day in the arena includeWoodfords Dray, The White HelmetsMotorbike Display Team, RomfordDrum & Trumpet Corp, West Lancs.Dog Display Team and Out on a Wing Falconry.

Locals and visitors alike can get into the Carnival spirit on Sunday 7 July at the Carnival’s annual Raft Race and Tug of War competition.

CROMER CARNIVAL 2013 Confirmed dates so far include: Miss Cromer and Senior AttendantCompetition 3 May, 7.30pm, venue TBC Cromer Carnival Art Week 24 - 29 May, Cromer Parish Hall

Clay Pigeon Shoot 30 June, 10.30am Raft Race and Tug of War 7 July, East Beach, Cromer Children’s Week One 5 – 9 August Children’s Week Two 12 – 16 August Cromer Carnival 2013 17 - 23 August (Carnival Day Wednesday 21 August)

More and more patients with busy lives arelooking for less invasive treatments with less downtime to improve their profile andtightness of their face and neck. The laser assisted face and neck lift is an exciting, effective, and safe option for patients who wish to tighten the skin and underlying tissuesof their face and neck. For good candidates, liquefying a small amount of fat to smooth thecontours andheating the underlying tissues to tightenthe skin may bethe answer theyare looking for.

We like it best as it avoids a tell-tale skin incision or scar in front of the ear.Any surgical procedure cancause a scar sowe try and avoid this risk by not cutting theskin.

Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS BCAAM,Medical Director and Laser Surgeon at theColtishall Clinic explains- “We use the newestgeneration of laser-assisted lipolysis [fat-destroying] and skin tightening devices. This is a third generation laser using wavelengthsthat allows the melting of fat and the heating of soft tissue to stimulate collagen formation to tighten the overlying skin. When used on the face, it is called a Laser Facelift.”

When to Choose the Laser Assisted FaceliftTreatment...

Laser assisted facelifting is great for men orwomen. A good candidate for this procedureis:

• in good general health• not smoking• has localised areas of fat in the jowl area

and under the chin• has good skin integrity.

Skin tightening alone can be accomplished on underweight patients. Dr Gheyi will examine your face and neck to determine if you are a good candidate. A laser facelift is safer than and more economical than a traditional full face or neck lift.

How does the Laser Facelift Work?Dilute solution of a local anaesthetic is used tonumb the areas treated on the face and neck.

This can be donewith minimal discomfort. Youcan be listeningto your favouritemusic while thisis being done.Once the area isnumbed, three orfour tiny 1mmopenings aremade, one behindeach earlobe, andone or two underthe chin. Small

hollow metallic tubes called cannulas arepassed through the fatty layer under the skin tomake tunnels. Then, a tiny 0.6mm laser fibre ispassed through fatbetween the skinand the muscles. The laserenergy heats thesurrounding tis-sue. This stimulates colla-gen formation andassists in skin andtissue tightening. The amount oftightening greatlydepends on skin type, age, elasticity, generalhealth and other factors.

Lastly, a small amount of fat, the amount variesfrom patient to patient, is suctioned away whenneeded.

Recovery and ResultsTypically, only one treatment is required to obtain optimal results. Initial results can beseen within one week, with continued improvement over the next three to fourmonths as tissues continue to tighten and heal. Some patients may benefit from a limited incision or mini-lift at the same time if theyhave significant sagging in the jowl area. Thiscan also be combined with a thread lift for additional tightening.

After the Laser Facelift, your face will bewrapped in a gauze compression dressing. The next day, you will be fitted into a facial compression garment. Under most circumstances, compression will be recommended for three to four days followedby nightly use only. Compression helps to pushout swelling, decrease scar tissue formation, and promote smoothness of the treated tissues.

Laser facial sculpting is less invasive and lesstraumatic to tissues than a traditional facelift. Therefore, there is less downtime for recovery. Most patients are able to resume work in twoto five days and return to all usual activity, including vigorous exercise, within two weeks. Most patients experience mild to moderate discomfort in the initial post-operative periodwith gradual resolution of discomfort in the

following days toweeks. Snugnessof the skin may beexperienced for amatter of months.

Coltishall Clinicoffers a full rangeof Cosmetic Med-ical and Surgical Laser procedures. Weoffer a range ofsolutions includ-ing non-surgical

face and neck lifts, liquid facelifts, thread liftsand now the innovative laser facelift.

From April 2013 there will be major changes in the public funding of legal costs for familywork. The availability of legal aid has reducedover recent years with less people being financially eligible and the number of firms of solicitors offering legal aid reducing. Thefurther cut backs will mean that from April2013 legal aid as we have known it will nolonger be available.

Until now those people financially eligible hadbeen entitled to advice from a solicitor on suchthings as divorce and separation to include financial disputes and arrangements for theirchildren on a relationship breakdown. FromApril 2013 only those cases involving domesticviolence will legal aid be granted for. This will leave a large group of people that had previously been able to receive legal aid not receiving this. The situation has been deteriorating with the number of firms offeringlegal aid reducing so that it has been very difficult for even those financially eligible to find a local solicitor able to offer them legal aid. From now on very few people will qualify for legal aid.

The government has stated it is committed to individuals finding alternative ways of resolving disputes rather than the courts beinginvolved. Mediation will continue to befunded under the legal aid system that remainsand individuals are being encouraged to takemore responsibility for their lives and therepercussions of a separation. Collaborativelaw and other methods of avoiding court involvement will become even more important.Collaborative law is one of the methods of

individuals keeping control of the situation and in a more common sense way meeting and reaching decisions rather than these beingimposed by a Judge.

The courts are expecting an influx of peoplerepresenting themselves without solicitors because they cannot afford to have solicitor actfor them. This could cause a meltdown in thecourt system which is already under pressurefrom its own financial cutbacks. Relationshipbreakdown can be a very emotional time and ifpeople are representing themselves they do nothave the same objectivity and professionalismthat a solicitor will bring to negotiations or anycourt proceedings. The courts and Judges aretherefore expecting considerable problems. The role of solicitors will be even more important especially in situations where bothparties to a divorce are not represented. Collaborative law and mediation as means of keeping control of the process and reducingthe legal costs involved will be increasinglypopular. Alternative methods of funding legalcosts will also become more common such aschildren asking their parents or other relativesto assist them.

The government’s view is that in a situationwhere there are limited resources funds cannotbe made available for legal aid to cover an individuals divorce. This competes with theprovision of other public services such as hospitals or schools. However, the knock oneffect is that many people experiencing themost difficult period of their lives may findthemselves without legal advice and makingdecisions that will have massive long term

effects on their lives. Not taking legal adviceis a big decision that someone could regret fora long time as you only get “one bite of thecherry” in dealing with the repercussions ofa separation or a divorce.

The Coalition announced new rules last monthto prevent cases of poor care being covered up.

The announcement came as part of the Government’s response to the public inquiryinto the failings at Mid Staffordshire hospitalwhich saw up to 1,200 patients die because ofpoor care.

Robert Francis QC, who led the inquiry, recommended that there should be a legal dutyof candour to ensure that patients and familiesare informed if treatment or care has causeddeath or serious injury. There should also be an explanation of what has happened.

Commenting, North Norfolk MP and Ministerof State for Care and Support Norman Lambsaid ‘This was a Liberal Democrat manifesto

commitment that we are delivering on in Coalition. Poor care is simply unacceptableand staff at every level have a professionalduty to speak up about it – and we will supportthem in doing so. The last Labour Governmentignored calls from the Liberal Democrats and from campaigners to introduce a duty of candour. The new statutory duty of candour sends a veryclear message about the importance of trans-parency and openness in the NHS’.

Commenting on Radio 4’s Today programmeprior to the announcement, campaigner PeterWalsh, from Action against Medical Accidentssaid ‘This would be probably the biggest advance in patient safety and patients’ rights in the history of the NHS’.

There will also be a new role of Chief Inspector of Social Care to oversee the care received by elderly and vulnerable people, whether care homes or in their own home. TheChief Inspector will be responsible for drivingup standards of care – and also highlighting examples of great care.

Commenting, Mr Lamb said ‘The idea is it willbe a very high-profile public role, very muchon the side of patients. I felt it was importantthat the lessons about high-quality care for patients in hospitals should also apply acrossthe care system. It doesn’t matter what settingpeople are in – whether in hospital, in a carehome or receiving care in their own home, wewant to ensure the same high standards apply’.

New rules to stop cover ups of poor care

On the morning of Sunday 17 March members of the Bittern DX Group (amateur radio) involved with the GB5SLB SES, part of SOS Radio Week2013 back in January returned to Sheringham Lifeboat Station to officially present them with the cheque. After a very quick ceremony BDXG Chairman Steve Balding G7VRK handed over £475 to David Hagan, Senior Helmsman of the lifeboat on the slipway.

Online donations of £25 have already been forwarded to RNLI HQ via the group’s JustGiving page so in total the GB5SLB event raised £500, a fantastic end to a wonderfulSES! These funds were raised mostly from a raffle with the 1st prize of a CelebrationCake by “Mellie Makes Cakes” from Happisburgh along with generous donations. They are already looking for prizes for 2014 should anyone be able to assist, please contact this event’s organiser Ken Holloway MØSHK via the group’s website www.bittern-dxers.org.uk or contact the Secretary for any further information of future

events etc.

U13 Boys’ Hockey teamcome second in NationalsThe Under 13 Boys’ Hockey team at Gresham’s Prep School in Holthave had a very successful season.

Firstly, they qualified for the National Schools finals by coming runners-up in the East Schools round of the National Hockey Tournament at Redbridge in March. In addition, at the IAPS (Independent Association of Prep Schools) East qualifying tournament, the Under 13 team competed against 20 other schools and went on toqualify as one of only four teams to compete at the IAPS National Finalsat Millfield, which took place on Thursday 14 March. The team playedsome very tough matches, but delivered a high standard of hockey andprogressed to the final, where they lost to Chafyn Grove on the ‘goldengoal’ rule and so became the runners up in the IAPS Nationals.

Mark Buckingham, Head of Hockey at the Prep School, said “This is afantastic result for the team and I am really proud of all the hard workthey have put in to make the National IAPS finals!"

Thirty-eight players battled it out over a duration of ten and a quarter hours as NorthWalsham Sports Centre played host to the 2013North Norfolk Championships and with almosta third of the 112 matches played going the distance, there was drama all the way in eachof the 8 events. 2009 Open Singles ChampionJohn Batchford lost out to defending championRobin Thaxter in a four set quarter-final. TomBaldock-Yaxley beat team-mate Andy Beanein straight before having to dig deep in hisquarter-final with Dennis Elliott – Baldock-Yaxley came back from match-point down inthe fourth set of his 11-9, 9-11, 3-11, 12-10, 11-6 win. In the semi, Baldock-Yaxley beatRay Howe in four as he set up a repeat of lastyear’s final. It would also be the third straightappearance in the final for Baldock-Yaxleywho had yet to win a set and Thaxter won thefirst 11-4 as the North Walsham player made a nervous start. Thaxter won six straight pointsfrom 3-7 in the second, but inspired play fromBaldock-Yaxley took the next four as he levelled. As the rallies intensified, a handful of errors at crucial times from Baldock-Yaxleyand pieces of luck – such as an edge at set-point in the third – saw Thaxter keep aheadand he took the next two sets 11-9, 11-7 to

conclude a successful defence. The final of theplate for was also settled in four as AndyMarsh won from a set down against SimonHalliday.

In the first round of the Open Doubles, JoeKirkup and Philip Stone dropped the secondset 11-0 to Eric Dolden and John Hall beforesquandering match-point in the fourth – andthen the set on a Stone double-hit. HoweverKirkup and Stone won the decider and thensaved two match-points in the fourth beforefalling to Elliott and Howe in five in the quarters. Beane and Batchford won the semi-final against Elliott and Howe in four. The firstset of the other semi was key as from deuceseven points were won against serve as defending champions Ian Darricott and Thaxterbeat Halliday and Price 15-13, 11-3, 11-4. Halliday and Price returned later in the final of the Handicap Doubles where they met AnneArmitage and Alf Greer (+13) who won instraight. It was a case of third time lucky in thefinals for Halliday – in the Handicap Singles hemet Thaxter. Halliday had a 12 point start andtwo tense and even sets were shared beforeHalliday took the decider 21-10. The OpenDoubles final also went the distance as Beaneand Batchford took a two set lead, before

Darricott andThaxter neededfour chances totake the third andthen won six straight pointsfrom 4-4 in the fourth. Beane and Batchfordregained their composure, led the decider 5-1and took their fourth championship point totake the second home title of the day.

An epic quarter-final in the Veterans (over 55s)saw both Elliott and Colin Humphries hit outrageous flukes to save match-point againstthe other – Humphries came from two setsdown, saved three match-points and took hissixth to win 18-16 in the fifth. Humphriesnearly repeated the trick in the semi – from twosets down he had match-points again but Howewon the fifth 13-11and then had a comfortablefinal win over John Welsh. Stuart Hook put upa brave fight in the second division singlesfinal, going down to five to Darricott who alsowon the second division doubles with TerryLawes. Away from the Championships the bignews in the League is that John Hancock’s runof 214 consecutive singles victories has cometo an end. The run which started in 2007 wasended by Howard Lupton 13-11 in the fourth.
