The town e?isted as an ancient borough in the medie&al period before being one of the '+

boroughs to be reformed under the Municipal Corporations ct in +=#$ with a democratically2

elected council replacing the oligarchic Tory corporation before it.[!] Town go&ernment alternated

between the<iberals and Conser&ati&es$ with the town achie&ing independence from

Northamptonshire in +++ when it became a county borough.[!] 1t had ( electoral wards from +"+$ "

Northampton was granted modern borough status in "'7$ but was reconstituted as a non2

metropolitan district$ a subdi&ision of its non2metropolitan county 9Northamptonshire:.[==][=7] 1t failed to

obtain unitary authority status in the "",s local go&ernment reform and again in !, when the

motion was &oted down by the council$[=#][=(] meaning the borough retains its two2tier structure of local

go&ernment8 the non2metropolitan district of Northampton is administered by Northampton Borough

Council and Northamptonshire County Council which are both controlled by the Conser&ati&e Party.

Policing in the town remains the responsibility of  Northamptonshire Police@ and firefighting$ the

responsibility of  Northamptonshire 5ire and Aescue Ser&ice. The Aoyal nglian Aegiment ser&es as

the county regiment for Northamptonshire.

"ealth services[edit]

N%S Northampton guides primary care ser&ices 9general practitioners$ dentists$ opticians and

pharmacists: in the town$ directly pro&ides adult social care and ser&ices in the community such

as health &isiting and physiotherapy and also funds hospital care and other specialist

treatments. Northampton -eneral %ospital is an N%S trust hospital which founded in '77 and

mo&ed to its present site in '"=$ and has continued to pro&ide healthcare to the local community for 

more than !,, years. The ;ast Midlands mbulance Ser&ice N%S Trust is responsible for the

pro&ision of statutory emergency medical ser&ices in Northampton.

St ndrew6s %ospital$ the flagship mental health facility of the pri&ate company St ndrew6s

%ealthcare$ is also based in Northampton. originally opened in +=+ to ser&e Northampton St

 ndrew6s became a charity and pri&ate healthcare pro&ider when the Berrywood sylum 9later the

Northampton County <unatic sylum$ then St Crispin %ospital in "7+: opened in +'(.
