Summer is such a great time to get out and about. The communities where we live understand the importance of public spaces and public performances, so you can enjoy fireworks, take a walk, listen to a concert or enjoy the sight and sounds of the many wild birds all within a short distance of your home.

This summer at Northeast Seniors has been filled with great opportunities to get out. The Gadget Fair was a great success. The seniors who attended learned about the many gadgets that can make life easier. The vendors enjoyed talking with seniors and learning more about what would be helpful. A special thank you goes to Autumn Woods for co-hosting the Gadget Fair; and to the local businesses that participated: ARS Services, Berger Transfer, CUB pharmacy, Dahl Medical Supply, Damsel in Defense, Handi Medical, Home Depot, Low Vision Store, Pampered Chef, Technically Speaking, Tupperware, U of MN Occupational Therapy students, Walgreens. I also thank Culver’s, Tea Source and The Legacy of St. Anthony for providing samples/snacks.

A CarFit event was held the same time as the Gadget Fair. An extra special thank you to the volunteers from Volunteers of America, U of MN Occupational Therapy students/staff and other local organizations. CarFit was highly rated by the seniors who participated. CarFit helps seniors make adjustments to their car, so they are safer drivers. CarFit also demonstrates helpful aids that can assist a senior in having better sight-lines and an easier time getting into and out of the car.

There is lots of summer left, so each of you still has time to get out and about and see your neighborhood in the beauty of sunshine, bright flowers, green trees and grass.

Join us on a Thursday for a walk, come on a senior housing tour, or just lean over the fence and say “hi” to your neighbor.

Its summer — enjoy!

Sleep plays a vital role in good health throughout life. Getting enough sleep can help protect your mental and physical health, quality of life, and safety.

Healthy Brain Function and Emotional Well-Being

Sleep helps your brain work properly. While you're sleeping, your brain is preparing for the next day. Sleep helps enhance your problem-solving skills and pay attention, make decisions, and be creative. Sleep deficiency is linked to depression, suicide, and risk-taking behavior.

Physical Health Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. Sleep deficiency also increases the risk of obesity. Your immune system defends your body against foreign or harmful substances.

Daytime Performance and Safety People who are sleep deficient take longer to finish tasks, have a slower reaction time, and make more mistakes. Studies show that sleep deficiency harms your driving ability as much as being drunk. It's estimated that driver sleepiness is a factor in about 100,000 car accidents each year, resulting in about 1,500 deaths. Adults over the age of 65 should be getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night.

Strategies to Improve Sleep Try to keep the same sleep schedule Use the hour before bed for quiet time Avoid strenuous exercise before bed Avoid bright artificial light Avoid heavy meals before bedtime Avoid nicotine and caffeine Spend time outside and be active Keep bedroom quiet, cool, and dark Take a hot bath or relax before bed Nap for no more than 20 minutes http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/health-topics/topics/sdd

Why is Sleep Important?

A Puppy All My Own By Dr. John Sanduss

I came home from school one day -it must have been years ago- And asked my Mom if I could have a puppy all my own

At first she said I couldn’t, But then she changed her mind. My friend’s dog just had puppies, The best you’d ever find!

We picked a black and white one And I held him in my hand. His eyes were not yet open; He could barely walk or stand.

He really was a mongrel -that was very plain to see- But just the fact he was mine Was all that mattered to me.

I took him home and loved him And watched him grow and grow, I taught him just a few tricks And to what I would throw.

When I came home from school He would meet me at the door And show how much he missed me By the happy tail he wore.

I gave him just a little love But he gave it back tenfold, And as the years went by for us I grew up as he turned old.

My cheerful pup is old now, His muzzle turned to gray, But he remembers in his dreams How we used to run and play.

He has always been my constant friend While others have come and gone. They all went their separate ways But my faithful dog stayed on.

Michelle Banse-Treasurer Michelle has been a resident of northeast Minneapolis for 3 years in the St Anthony West Neighborhood. During the week she works at Avada Hearing Care in Roseville educating the community on hearing loss and on the weekends works at Catholic Eldercare as a receptionist. She began her services at Northeast Senior Services in 2012 as the quarterly newsletter editor. Since starting her volunteering she has graduated with her Master’s in Gerontology. With her degree, she hopes to educate the public on the importance of working as a community to help seniors live longer in their homes. Dawn Montgomery Dawn is a Community Nutrition Educator for the University of Minnesota Extension’s Expanded Food & Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) for 14 years. As a Community Nutrition Educator, she partners with community-based organizations that serve low-income youth, families and seniors that care for children to provide a series of nutrition education classes. She also worked for the Minneapolis Public Housing Authorities for 16 years where she provided customer service, effectively and efficiently communicated with persons of varied economic, social and ethnic backgrounds as well as provided referrals to needed resources. She is a lifelong learner, dedicated, hard worker who is passionate about working and empowering people especially seniors. Dawn joined the Northeast Senior Services Board in January 2015. As a Board Member, she hopes to bring her expertise and creativity to help revitalize the Northeast senior community.

Susan Mattson– President Susan joined the Northeast Seniors board in July of 2008. Our organization's name at that time was Northeast Senior Citizens Resource Center or NECSRC. She is currently serving as board president. She is retired but works part time as a receptionist at Earle Brown Terrace in Brooklyn Center. Her father, Eldon Mattson, was a long time board member and Susan was really happy to join the board to keep involved in helping seniors. She loves hearing the family stories & childhood memories of clients & residents at her job. Karen Coons - Vice President Karen lived in Northeast Minneapolis for 21 years and now resides in a condo in downtown Minneapolis. Church activities, great shopping and a passion for seniors bring her back to Northeast regularly. She retired as Volunteer Director at Augustana Healthcare Center five years ago and shortly thereafter joined the Northeast Seniors board. She currently works part-time in guest services at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. Robin Tutt– Secretary Robin has been on board since 2013. She is a partner at Lindquist and Vennum in Minneapolis and focuses her practice in the areas of estate planning, business succession planning, and probate and trust administration. After the death of a loved one, Robin guides her clients through the administration process. Before her legal career, Robin worked in the senior housing and healthcare industry.

SUMMER 2015 Page 5

Dr. Sirri Nomo Sirri has been a contributing board member as part of the planning committee to better serve our northeast senior population since 2013. She joined NE Senior Services because of her interest in senior health needs. She is a family physician here in Minneapolis. Nancy West Her grandchildren were indirectly responsible for her beginning to volunteer for NE Seniors. They were attending preschool in the same church that NE Senior's office was located. She remembers walking up the stairs and meeting Kay. Her jobs as a volunteer have been many and varied. Answering the phones, helping move to the new location, organizing the office, working on the directory and this spring coordinating the High Tea fundraiser and now accepting a position as a board member. She is a senior with an unusual lifestyle. No home. No car. She works and makes a living with her organizing business, Ducks in a Row, caregiving and helping daughter’s in her business. There are many reasons for her continuing to volunteer for NE Seniors. It is a small agency using volunteers to help seniors. They work with seniors and their families to coordinate and access already existing services. They do not duplicate services that are already provided by other agencies....just to name a few. As she continues this journey, the biggest challenge as a board member will be to help raise funds and raise public awareness of NE Seniors.

Fr. Earl Simonson Father Earl Simonson, the fourth Pastor of the Saint Clement Parish, from 1977 till his retirement in 2013. He is the longest serving board member with NE Senior Services with 35 years of service. He brings his extensive knowledge of northeast and his sense of humor to the organization. Kay Anderson– Executive Director Kay became aware of NE Seniors through her church. She served on the board of directors in 2002-2003, filled in as interim executive director in 2003-04. Came back to NE Seniors in 2006 as interim Executive Director, and has stayed on. She believes that seniors have the ability to make good decisions for themselves, if provided with accurate information. She also believes that seniors have much to contribute to the community and to their families. Sometimes both community and family need to recognize when a little flexibility is needed, to allow a senior to fully participate.

She also appreciates all the volunteers who make it possible for NE Seniors to provide services to seniors living in the Northeast community. Volunteers of all ages, from age 6 who rake leaves, to those in their 90s who help with mailings, each person makes a valuable contribution. Thank you.

years, we will find the right role for you! We can offer rides to and from events, many different opportunities, and a place to feel

needed and welcome! Come volunteer with Northeast Senior Services and make a difference in the

community you love! Call NE Seniors to see what will work

with your schedule! 612-781-5096
