There are many lamp types available which all have theirunique features and benefits and characteristic areas of application. An understanding and appreciation of which lamp type is fit for purpose is required when making this selection.

Lamp properties:-

► lamp life

► investment cost

► running costs

► lamp control (dimming)

The considered fusion of lamp properties is essential to ensure that the lighting meets all criteria from visual composition to compliance with regulatory standards and recommendations. Regulations and design standards directcertain routes towards lamp selection to ensure the correctefficiencies are achieved relative to defined spaces. Case StudyClient: The Hilton BakuInterior Designer: ara designLight fittings supplied: 5m diameter glass and crystal pendant

Northern Lights (Chesterfield) Ltd T: 01246 858750 F: 01246 858751 W: www.northern-lights.co.uk E: [email protected]

In terms of epic design and installation jobs, they do not come muchbigger than The Hilton, Baku. Harry Gregory of ara design, London, approached us with the following brief....

"What we have is a 12 metre diameter atrium running from thelobby to the top of the building - a distance of 68 metres. What Iwant is a large fitting in the centre of this space which has to looklight and airy and terminate about 7 metres above the lobby floor. It needs to be about 5m in diameter."

Our designers frantically set to work. This installation created three separate problems. Firstly, how would we make the main bodyof the fitting from which the glass crystal would be suspended? Secondly, how would we suspend the fitting safely? And lastly, howwould we install it, specifically the glass? It was eventually decidedthat we would use crystal shapes suspended from a plate and thatthe fitting needed to be 7.5m from top to bottom.

A tall order in more ways than one!

These three problems were tackled by our three designers and resulted in this breathtaking design that we are confident fully metthe brief. One designer worked on the suspension, another on thesuspension plate and the third on the glass arrangement.

Two site visits to Baku to liaise with the main contractor and a visit to our Chinese glass factory ensured that the installation wentsmoothly and professionally, proving that no bespoke job is too bigor too complex for Northern Lights!

Versatility is a key factor in our success. We do not limit ourselves to commonprocesses or materials, which offers our customers complete, creative freedom. We will endeavour to realise our customers’ concepts however unconventional or radical and we will work closely with the design originator to ensure that what we manufacture reflects and retains their intent.

ara design were appointed as interior designers and space planners for HiltonBaku, for which they designed a series of unique bespoke lighting products.

From the initial design sketches it was clear that what was required was a largependant with an organic feel. The first challenge was to get the basic shape ofthe pendant to work within the space. The second challenge was how to createthis and make it look random and organic without it losing its structural integrity.

This all day dining pendant is a large, sculptural basket form, which is entwinedwith custom-made, aluminium wire with a bronze applied finish and individualfaceted crystals. Each supporting arm is hand-shaped and retained with a series of concentric bracing rings. It became known as the bird’s nest pendant.

Northern Lights (Chesterfield) Ltd T: 01246 858750 F: 01246 858751 W: www.northern-lights.co.uk E: [email protected]

When Jamie's Italian was first conceived, the starting point was torecreate what Italians are most proud of - fantastic, rustic dishes, served in an environment with a "neighbourhood" feel, inspired bythe "Italian table" where people relax, share, and enjoy eachother's company. Jamie's Italian was designed to be accessible and affordable, a place where anyone is welcome and everyone willfeel comfortable.

For the Islington restaurant Blacksheep’s creative team designed a dynamic lighting scheme, with the key focus on two lightingelements. To generate visual presence and drama, Blacksheepproposed two statement chandeliers to define spaces within therestaurant. A geometric ‘lattice’ tile, repeated over a series ofvertical and horizontal arrays formed the core principle of thechandeliers.

With Islington’s chandeliers the route to manufacture wasachieved by using individual laser-cut steel panels, weldedtogether to form an open cube which was then repeated again andagain, with one cube being welded to the next. A time-consumingmethod of assembly, but one which displayed the ‘raw’ look thatBlacksheep required. A total of 414 panels were used to form 82open cubes which completed two visually complex chandelierstructures. The chandeliers were finished as ‘blackened’ steel, demonstrating a rustic effect

The fitting comprises more than 120 glass tubes, which are individually suspended on thin wires from the ceiling plate and illuminated by thedownlight placed at the end of the tube. The curved tubes diffuse thelight to create gentle sparkles, adding a soft touch to the busy kitchenarea.

Ask Restaurants are a key example ofhow this strategy is employed. Theirbold, fresh, architectural spaces are alldistinct, but brand recognition is evident through subtle design statements which reinforce their identity. Working with K.D. Paine & Associates, Northern Lightshelped transform an old Art Deco cinema into a popularpub, paying homage to its original style with new ArtDeco feature pendants. J.D.Wetherspoon's ‘Peter Cushing’ in Whitstable opened in August 2011 with theentire decorative lighting scheme manufactured byNorthern Lights.

Situated in the main entrance area, this square ArtDeco pendant perfectly fits its elegant surroundings.

The Art Deco theme is continued in the main bar. The versatile and accurate properties of the laser cutting process allowed our designers to convert master images of the carpet pattern to sketch entities using our 3D computer software, SolidWorks. The profiles were then cut to create the basis of thethree hexagonal feature pendants and the lights abovethe bar, thereby enabling the strong theme to be maintained throughout the interior.

All light fittings were designed to order, constructed and finished at our factory in Chesterfield.
