Newsletter – January 2017

A Happy New Year To All

Another fantastic year came and went at Northern Nights and once again the season was filled with many great experiences and new friendships. Northern Nights has truly become a place where families and friends come together and celebrate so many different things. We are so thrilled to see three generations of family making the journey to Waskwei – grandparents, grandchildren and children will cherish the memories for a lifetime. From celebration of health and healing, birthdays, anniversaries, the Stanley Cup, retirement or reliving the fishing trips with your children that you had with Dad when you were 12 years old, Cindy and I have been absolutely blessed to be part of the experience.

To all of our guests, family and friends, thank you for making 2016 such a wonderful year and to all, good health and happiness for the year to come – see you at Waskwei in 2017!!

Camp opening is always interesting to say the least. Along with the usual start up activities, there is always a project or two and Cindy and I are always so appreciative of the opening crew that comes in to get camp up and going. This year we took advantage of a big crew and re-established the foundations for the main cabin and extended a covered deck with an outdoor kitchen off the front. Last year the guest cabin was the recipient of a new gazebo so we did something similar for our cabin.

My brother Jason and his mates Andy, Lyle and Rupert made the journey from Kamloops BC. For Rupert’s first Pike experience, he put on a display of showmanship catching a 43 and 41 incher. There is still debate over who actually caught the 43 incher, as Jason netted him and he was never really hooked – the big fella latched on to a smaller Pike and wouldn’t let go. I say, good team work and chalk it up as a great double header!!

Cindy’s nephews from Yorkton SK, Brice and Byron made a quick trip up for the first couple days – we had to have some “skilled”experience and what they did in two days was amazing! The foundation was set for Cindy and I to finish over the summer.

We also seem to get a dedicated hand from good ole South Australia with Michael returning for the third time. Canada has adopted him (or he has adopted Canada) as he can’t stay away! We had to get him back on a plane or he would have the whole north chopped into fire wood – never seen such a machine on the axe!!

Thank you all for travelling such a long distance to give us a helping hand. We’re no “Timber Kings”, but we sure know how to have fun! We look forward to sitting on the new deck with everyone when you next return to Northern Nights.

Chuck, Jeremiah and Linda travelled a very long way from Atlanta. New beginnings for some and retirement for others!! We really enjoyed the stories and look forward to seeing ya’ll next season!!

Tom and Kevin make the journey from San Diego each year and have come to know every nook and cranny at Waskwei. The weather was a bit unruly this year however cards, great food and a few reds didn’t go astray. Thank you for your friendship guys, you’ve been with us through the majority of our tenure and we look forward to seeing you each year. See you soon!

Well, what a year it was! Congratulations Mike (Bales) and the Pittsburgh Penguins - next year you can bring the cup to camp! (the Cup sort of took the shine of the ring “Slick” – just kidding). Each year Cindy and I prepare for your arrival, everything goes on hold and the fun begins! The stories generated over 4 days each year (3 for some and 5 for others) is incredible. We have such a great time and laugh not nearly enough! I have come to grips with the 3 favourite times of year (ABC’s), have been banned from rescue missions and received a brand new can opener for Christmas. Thank you so much for sharing the opportunity in raising the Cup with family and friends. To Knits, Slick, Tom, Snife, Vogs and Mike – we’re ready, see you July!!

Upside right and yes this is a

smile – we think!

Nothing beats this smile! Keira celebrated her birthday at camp and is the bravest person we know! You’re too young to know right now however, people will look to you for inspiration – you rock Keira! Glad you could make it up to camp Reg and Rhonda – it was a pleasure spending time with all of you.

Ron and Gwen have been coming since the beginning in 2011 and will always be a corner stone of our little paradise.

Bob and Dennis, does this mean the rest of the crew lost their spot?! Three generations and what a wonderful surprise. Welcome Gordon, Kendra, Doreen and Shirley. Kendra you put a smile on our face every day! Salt of the earth and such a great family. Pancakes are the best Bob and Dennis, three squares a day with fresh as it gets Walleye. Stay well and see you after seeding.

Brad, Branden, Bernard, Kim, Justin and Dallas. Life certainly puts up some obstacles – how you tackle those obstacles says a lot about a family. Cindy and I are so very fortunate to have met everyone and thankful our paths have crossed. We’ll put string on the sunglasses and will ease up on the fish and chips!

See you folks in June x2

The North just beckons and keeps you coming back. Another family of three generations that truly love what the North has to offer. Every day is an adventure and Bo and Mason have absolutely no fear. When a three year old sits down at the head of the table and commences the story telling, “once upon a time”……., you know it’s going to be a good evening – we still get a sore belly over that one!

Each year the plane is fuller and we look forward to meeting the rest of the family this season!!

Lots of laughs and great memories

The Walleye cannot hide from these fella’s! Without question, each year Rob, Ryan, Tanner and Jeff pull in the biggest catches of Walleye. We were one down this year with Chad gone missing however, hopeful he’ll be able to make the journey this season. Another group that is a part of the Northern Nights family and we look forward to seeing you for years to come.

Closing camp is always a bit sad as we bid farewell for another season. It always makes things a lot easier when you have good company and youth to make things a bit easier!! Logan, Allan and Tyler have been a tremendous help for us over the past couple years and we can’t thank them enough. I think I hear a moose calling……..

See you in the spring guys!

Guest Book

Here are some excerpts from our guest book this past season. Please enjoy and see you in 2017!!

“Last one’s out and first ones in, if only I could remember where we hid everything! Glad to get in for opener and see

how it’s all started. Cheers Mike for all the knowledge imparted on “Chainsaw Carpentry”. Sorry for sawing logs all night

though it was the soundest sleep I’ve had. Fishing was great as always! The bald eagle display was incredible! Michael

Jordan “Junior Outfitter Norther Nights”– Adelaide Australia.

“Great week of friends, fishing and hard work. Caught my first Pike and Walleye. 43” and 41” Pike with pictures to prove

it. Trip of a life time! Thanks so much Mike and Cindy. Rupert – Kamloops, British Columbia.

“Cindy and Mike, the week went way to fast. One of the best holidays I’ve been on. You are both salt of the earth

good people and very rare in this day and age! Thanks again for being a great host! Hope you have fun with all the fly

gear. Hope to come back again and stay for a while. Thank you. Lyle – Kamloops, British Columbia.

“Mike and Cindy, this week was awesome. A number of firsts for me – flying in a float plane, catching walleye and Pike.

The hospitality was top notch and the opportunity to do this is much appreciated. If I get a chance to return I will try to

have another moose roast for you. Have a great season and thanks once again”. Andy – Kamloops, British Columbia.

“Mike and Cindy, it’s been a few years but I was pretty sure I said less work and more fishing – just kidding! This has

been a great week with fish coming in fast and furious in the last days. Rupert has forgot to give mention to his

amazing guide that put him onto the 43” and 41” Pike – your welcome Rupert! Jason – Kamloops, British Columbia.

“This was my 8th time to do a fishing trip to Canada. I have been totally blown away by everything ya’ll have done here.

Such kindness! So much thought has gone into little details that make so much difference. Running water, hot showers,

solar lights, gazebo and so much more. Thank you for a wonderful time. P.S. Great fishing too! - Linda, Jeremiah and

Chuck – Atlanta, Georgia.

“Thanks for the memorable week of Walleye fishing. The weather was great and the company even better. You’re

hospitality and kindness is second to none. Just make sure that outhouse doesn’t lock me in again for next year….proud

to be the first! Tanner – Calgary, Alberta.

“After missing last year it was great to be back for a great week of fishing. Thanks for the amazing hospitality. I am

already looking forward to next year! Jeff – Regina, Saskatchewan.

“From the California Boys, this year is going down as weather and food. Always great to drop in and spend time with

friends. We look forward to the fishing, surroundings and you two! Always better to spend time with others who like the

same things. Hope the plans work out for us all. See you next time. Tom and Kevin - San Diego, California.

“Thank you so much for another awesome time. Fishing was slow this week but exploring was awesome! Love the shore

lunch. Mom caught the big Pike but it was a team effort to get it in. Bo says we are definitely coming back! Love

the North! John, Ruth, Johnny, Mason, Scott, Bo and Megan - Gull Lake, Saskatchewan.

“This was our first fly in to Northern Nights camp and will definitely not be our last. From the very first time when

we booked this, Mike and Cindy have left a mark on all of us, particularly my sons and have ensured this trip will be

remembered forever. We cannot thank you enough for your kindness, generosity and truly remarkable hospitality. You

two make this trip. We will see you next year and again…thank you. Kim, Dallas, Justin, Brad, Bernard and Branden.

Regina – Saskatchewan.

“Thanks Mike and Cindy for a great time again. The boys apologise that absolutely nothing got done in the last four days

around camp. Mikes projects were at a standstill. “We” just couldn’t get anything done – there was too much fun to be

had! See you in a couple weeks hosting the Cup! Knits, Slick, Tom, Snife and Vogs. Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

“Thanks so much Mike and Cindy for the wonderful stay at fishing camp. The weather wasn’t great but we had an

awesome time. Thanks also for the extra TLC you provided for Keira. It was greatly appreciated and will always be

remembered. Reg, Rhonda and Keira - Carrot River, Saskatchewan.
