5th MUNS: Locked and loaded

MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. --

The B-52H Stratofortress is the backbone of the Air Force’s bomber mission, able to carry nuclear or precision guided ordnance with worldwide precision.

The 5th Munitions Squadron armament flight is responsible for the maintenance and repair of the B-52’s support equipment that carry and drop the munitions.

Armament system’s motto is “Weapons well hung” which reminds Airmen how important their efforts are to the mission.

“There are two main sections in our career field,” said Master Sgt. Melanie Lineberry, 5th MUNS aircraft armament maintenance section chief.” “On-equipment

loads and unloads munitions out on the flight line. The off-equipment section inspects, tests and maintains the equipment that hold the munitions.”

Lineberry said the support equipment they maintain includes heavy stores adapter beams, MAU-12 Bomb ejector racks, conventional rotary launchers, cluster bomb racks and litening pod pylons.

“We maintain around 60 to 80 pieces of support equipment and complete over 100 inspections, maintenance and repairs a week,” said Tech. Sgt. Wade Hunnicutt, 5th MUNS alternate mission equipment section chief.

The mission and goal of the 5th MUNS armament flight is to support flight line Airmen and loading

and unloading operations.“Anything that’s

removed from the aircraft is what we work on in our shop,” said Lineberry. “We tear them apart, inspect them and make sure they are fully functional and mission ready.”

Both Lineberry and Hunnicutt said that they are faced with various inspections depending on the piece and importance of equipment they’re working on.

The first phase in inspection is to check for visual discrepancies

and repair them based on needs.

Secondly, they take the equipment apart and check the inside to ensure if it’s still functioning correctly.

After fixing any discrepancies, the equipment is tested and sent back to the flight line.

Operational, electrical and mechanical support equipment have 180 day, 12 month, 18 month and 24 month inspections to ensure they are in efficient condition.

“We do a lot of preventive maintenance,”

said Lineberry. “All of our equipment is the key integral piece to make sure bombs drop on target. If the pilots hit a button and we don’t do our job those bombs are not going to drop.”

Staff Sgt. Joshua Olson, 5th Muni-tions Squadron armament mainte-nance team chief and Airman 1st Class Katelyn Naler, 5th MUNS ar-mament maintenance team mem-ber, inspect a heavy stores-adapter beam at Minot Air Force Base, N.D., May 1, 2018. The 5 MUNS Airmen repair MAU-12 ejector bomb racks, heavy stores adapter beam, conven-tional rotary launchers and cluster bomb racks.

MSU works with fifth graders to produce a newspaperMINOT STATE UNIVERSITY

MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University assistant professor of Communication Arts Nicole Thom-Arens has been working with Bel Air Elementary fi fth graders to produce the Bel Air Times and teach them media literacy.

Thom-Arens will deliver 300 copies of the Bel Air Times to Bel Air Elementary Thursday, May 17, at 2:30 p.m.

“Fifth grade is an important time for students to understand how media is produced, how it should be consumed, and how to

be critical of what they see and read because they are becoming more involved with social media and content on the internet at this age,” Thom-Arens said.

At Minot State, Thom-Arens advises the Red & Green student newspaper and teaches the course attached to the paper, Communication 281. Early in the spring semester, Minot State students visited Bel Air and worked with the fi fth graders to review and edit their pieces.

In January, the students began conducting interviews

and writing the pieces for the newspaper, which included news stories, features on students, staff , and sports teams, reviews, an advice column, and comics.

Then, in April, Bel Air students came to Minot State to tour the Red & Green, university print services, and KMSU, Minot State’s campus television and radio station.

Bel Air fi fth grade writing teacher, Kyrie Beckman, assigned students the topics and worked with them to produce the content.

“The fi fth grade students loved every second of the newspaper project,” Beckman said. “The cooperation of the college students created an exciting opportunity for students to write in a real way. Nicole Thom-Arens, the organizer of this opportunity, introduced my students to jobs and opportunities in the world of communications. I can guarantee that there will be several students that step into the world of journalism because of this experience.”

AIR FORCE MATERIAL COMMAND PUBLIC AFFAIRS

MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. --

DAYTON, Ohio - Those who can't wait to see the new B-17F Memphis Belle exhibit in person on May 17 will be able to get a sneak-peak of the exhibit as it is unveiled to the family members of the Memphis Belle crew and invited dignitaries for the first time during a private event at the

National Museum of the U.S. Air Force on May 16 at 6:30 p.m.

Viewers may tune in to this LIVE event on the Memphis Belle exhibit opening page on the museum's website at:

http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/Upcoming/Boeing-B-17F-Memphis-Belle-Exhibit

-Opening-May-17-2018/The original B-17F

Memphis Belle - the first U.S. Army Air Forces heavy bomber to return to the United States after completing 25 combat missions over occupied Europe - will be unveiled to the public on May 17 - exactly 75 years after its crew finished their last mission in the war against Nazi Germany on May 17, 1943.

The Memphis Belle, which has not been on public display since 2002, and surrounding exhibit, along with a new strategic bombardment exhibit, will open to the public on May 17 following a ribbon cutting ceremony that will begin at approximately 9:15-9:30 a.m.

The new exhibit will tell the complete story of the Memphis Belle and address the many myths associated with the aircraft. Artifacts will be on display from seven of the crewmembers including several war-time uniforms; a flight suit; combat boots; flying goggles; dog-tags; pilot's wings and other rank insignia. In addition, rare color archival footage-some of which has never been seen by the public before-will be shown in the exhibit.

Surrounding the Memphis Belle exhibit will be a new Strategic Bombardment exhibit featuring a digitally animated map of the strategic bombing campaign; two Medals

of Honor; items worn and used on significant missions; artifacts from bombing campaign leaders; a bomber top turret and ball turret; and engaging photos.

The Memphis Belle and other B-17 aircraft were assigned to the 91st Bombardment Group during World War II. Combat missions later in the war earned the 91st BG two Distinguished Unit citations.

Although the 91 BG gained a lot of fame during and after the war, this came at a high price. The

group lost 197 aircraft and more than 600 men, with approximately 1,150 men taken as prisoners of war.

The 91 BG transitioned into the 91st Strategic Reconnaissance Wing. Then, in 1968, it became the 91st Strategic Missile Wing, whose new mission was to maintain three squadrons of Minuteman I Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles.

Eventually the 91 SMW would shift to what we know today at Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota, as the 91st Missile Wing.

Weeding through lawncare service options

METRO CREATIVE

Millions of acres across North America are devoted to lush, green lawns. According to Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment, lawns take up 40.5 million acres and individuals spend $30 billion on average for lawn and garden upkeep in the United States alone. People certainly love their lawns and often wonder if those lawns are best left in the hands of professionals.

The National Gardening Association states that 72 percent of American households do some work in their yards. However, a growing number of homeowners also hire others to make their lawns look pristine. Homeowners who want to leave lawncare to the professionals can consider the following factors as they search for a company that best suits their needs.

• Work with a licensed and insured company. Lawncare services that are licensed and insured provide more peace of mind to homeowners than the alternatives. Should an injury occur on your property while work is being done, an insured business will be able to take care of it and you

won’t be liable.• Ask about membership

in a professional or trade organization. Businesses that belong to an organization invest in continually learning about the evolution of lawncare. This increases the likelihood that member companies will be up-to-date regarding the latest, most environmentally friendly lawncare techniques. Participation in a trade organization also may indicate education in the landscaping fi eld.

• Research reviews before hiring. Although public reviews may not paint the entire picture and they often refl ect only the very positive or very negative experiences previous customers have had with a given business, they can provide an idea of how a lawncare company interacts with its customers. Prospective customers who contact the Better Business Bureau may learn if there have been any glaring complaints against a particular contractor.

• Find out which services are off ered. Ask each business what services they provide. While nearly every lawncare contractor

will mow the lawn and trim shrubs, many homeowners prefer companies that can adapt when the yard needs a change. This may include pest treatments, fertilization, aeration, and seasonal cleanups.

• Look for a company that’s

organized and connected. Customer service should be a factor when choosing a lawncare service. You want to be able to reach the company promptly. A company that responds quickly is ideal, especially if you need to change a service or need to

inquire about additional or emergency work.

Shopping for a lawncare service can take time and eff ort, but the results will be well worth it when homeowners have lawns and landscapes that make their neighbors green with envy.
