UNwRAp A THEATRicAl TREAT THiS SpRiNG… Welcome to Spring at Northern Stage. We are very pleased to say that in spite of tough economic times and some changes on our horizon, Northern Stage continues to go from strength to strength. As you probably know we have a very long-standing commitment to making theatre with children and young people, and to encourage talent wherever we find it. This season we’re especially proud to be launching NORTH, a unique training opportunity for 7 gifted and determined young people who will be learning all about setting up a theatre company and making a production with us. You can see the results of their hard work in March (see page 8) and we’d be very surprised if this wasn’t the start of something big for all of them.

We are also preparing our second festival programme for Northern Stage at St Stephen’s, following our highly successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe last August. Keep an eye on our website for announcements throughout the Spring. And meanwhile here in Newcastle we are very proud and excited by the great variety and quality of theatre and dance we have to offer you. Erica’s farewell season has all the hallmarks you have come to expect; daring new work, great classic plays, adventurous theatre for families and, echoing her very first season, a funny, thoughtful and moving play by Dennis Potter, Blue Remembered Hills.

we look forward to welcoming you at Northern Stage this season, and here’s to exciting times ahead!

STAGE 1

Willie is playing at being a Spitfire, peter is avoiding the williams gang, and Raymond is playing at being a cowboy with John. Angela doesn’t really want to share her china doll with Audrey. And Donald is hiding out in the barn. Amidst hilarious games and complex friendships an unexpected turn of events lead these seven children headlong into sudden tragedy one wartime summer.

Dennis Potter’s charming and profound play takes us to a world of dappled sunshine and long, playful afternoons to remind us that no-one is ever truly innocent. Almost twenty years after his early death, Potter speaks to our fractious, changing world with a simple but powerful story about personal responsibility. The play captures his wicked humour and his fierce intolerance of cruelty.

Moving, funny and unforgettable.
