Our Kindergarten TeamLarry Bogolub (aka Mr. B)*I have been teaching in Minneapolis since 1996. The last 10 have been at Northrop where I have been teaching kindergarten and loving it.
*I have a BA from Macalester College and a MA from the University of St. Thomas.
*I have been married for 20+ years and have 2 active, rugby playing boys.
*When I am not teaching I enjoy kayaking, biking, reading and cooking
*Mr. B fun fact: I was an extra in Prince’s movie,
“Purple Rain” (But you have to watch it in slow motion to see me.)

Welcome to Kindergarten! I have called this grade home for more than 16 years. I love teaching Kinder and seeing the many wonderful growth milestones that we hit together!
I am married and have 3 boys and 2 dogs at home. We are often found at a baseball or football field, or on the basketball court. At home I enjoy gardening, reading, and our family game nights.

Social/Emotional LearningOur grade level focus is on the whole child; academic, social, and emotional
learning.
LiteracyBy the end of Kindergarten students are expected
to know:
○the names of the upper and lowercase letters○the letter sounds (hard consonants, and short
vowels)○a sight word vocabulary of more than 50 words
(addressed through GHGR and Book in a Bag)○how to isolate the first, last, and middle sounds
in words ○how to generate oral rhyme○how to blend and segment phonemes (sounds)
Math○Patterns: Students can describe, create and
break apart a variety of patterns.
○2-D & 3-D: Identify basic 2-D & 3-D shapes. The students will also be able to use the shapes to create artwork.
○Number Sense: Count forward to 100, backward from 20, learn basic addition and subtraction facts, and order & write numbers to 31.
ScienceKindergarten Science consists of two key components:
FOSS Science Kits (Full Option Science System)-Trees/Weather, Animals Two by Two, Wood, Paper, and Fabric
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Instruction-collaboration with STEM teacher introducing a variety of weekly lessons. Students will take full advantage of the world’s largest classroom - the outdoors.
By the end of Kindergarten, Kinder Kiddos are expected to know:
○why rules exist, and consequences for not following rules
○responsible community behavior and what it takes to be a responsible member of a community
○an understanding of families and cultural celebrations
○the difference between a need and a want○the difference between a good and/or service
Differentiation - Opportunities for the same learning may look different from student to student. Teachers adapt lessons to accommodate different learning styles, talents, interests, and abilities.
Arts IntegrationArts Integration at the Kindergarten level is about creating, performing and responding to visual and performing arts. We achieve this through collaboration with our art and music teachers along with classroom projects and musical activities.
Team Field TripsThe kindergarten team has a rich tradition of field trips that supplement and support our classroom learning.
Recent locations for our learning expeditions include: walking trips to Minnehaha Creek and Lake Hiawatha, Applewood Orchard, the MN Valley National Wildlife Refuge, the MN Zoo, and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
Environmental Focus At our grade level we highlight our neighborhood and community. Your child has the opportunity to participate in many ways throughout the year:
● Minnehaha Mondays● Explorations at Minnehaha Creek & Lake
Hiawatha● Partnership with the Midwest Food Connection● Collaboration with our STEM teacher ● Partnership with the MN Valley Wildlife Refuge● Various field trip opportunities ● Northrop outdoor classroom and gardens
Homework Policy○ Homework expectations align with research
and evidenced based practices which maximize student engagement and success. Assignments will not exceed ten minutes per grade. ○ K = 0-10 minutes○ 1 = 10 minutes○ 2 = 20 minutes○ 3 = 30 minutes○ 4 = 40 minutes○ 5 = 50 minutes
Kindergarten homework expectations vary from classroom to classroom.
