Wondering what to give a gardener for Christmas? Or how about this…ever wonder how to garden with Christmas in mind? Holly bushes, with their red berries and dark green foliage, have been traditional wintertime decorations for as long as my grandmother has been around. These beautiful plants look good all year around with their glossy green foliage and dark red berries in the winter time. Not only do these plants provide us with seasonal color but they also provide shelter and a food source to many wildlife. Because red berries are the reason for the season, you must select female plants and the best way to do this is to purchase plants with berries

already present. The next characteristic to think about is mature size. ‘Needlepoint’ and ‘Burford’ hollies both get to be roughly the same size at about 10-12 feet tall and 8-10 feet wide. The ‘Needlepoint’ holly is noted as being a heavy berry producer. Those looking for a nice tree-sized holly should look at single trunk versions of ‘Savanah’ and ‘East Palatka”. Both will reach a similar mature size of about 25 feet

tall and 15 feet wide with a natural pyramid like growth habit. See what your local garden center or feed store has to offer.

So I got a poinsettia…Many gifts are exchanged during the holidays and one of the most common plants given to friends and family is that of the poinsettia. For those looking for a history of how the poinsettia plant became so popular in the U.S. can look up information on Joel Roberts Poinsett, but for those looking to keep their recently gifted poinsettia plant alive please read on. The best location for your new prize is a bright room. Be wary of interior hallways and other areas void of exterior windows. It will also be important to know where air conditioner, heater vents and drafty door ways are located because poinsettia

plants can be particularly sensitive to sudden temperature changes. The proper temperature range is anywhere between 65-75°F, which is easily obtainable in any South Louisiana household. Most find watering to the most difficult part because it involves more than just adding water on a set routine. To be effective you must water the soil as soon as it becomes dry to touch. This will involve checking to see if the soil is dry several times a month. You will hear of many tricks to help avoid having to keep such a close eye on your poinsettia plant but no trick will substitute for proper care. Good luck with your new gift!

Waiting for spring vegetables? Think about starting seedlings.Though I find many gardeners who love eating everything that grows in their garden, no matter what time of year, some grow tired of eating broccoli, cauliflower and greens. Maybe it’s the grey skies or maybe it’s the lack of bright colored produce, who knows. If you find yourself as one of those were prefer tomatoes and eggplants over collard and mustard greens then look to start growing your own vegetable transplants for the oncoming spring season. You will need a few supplies in order to grow your own transplants.

First off, you will need an area that receives at least 4-5 hours of sunlight. Choose an area near a water source. Whether it is near a faucet or at least a hose’s length away from one, easy access to water will make your life much easier. Other items needed include: peat based seed starting mix, pots, seeds and labels. Fill containers with seeding mix, thoroughly wet them down and let them drain off excess water. Fill out a label for the specific vegetable seed you are going to plant and go ahead and place them in each container. Next, drop two seeds in each container and cover seeds with a layer of seeding mix. The general rule of thumb on seeding depth is to sow seeds at two times the width of the seed; smaller seeds will require a small layer of soil over the top whereas larger seeds require a thicker layer of soil. When all seeds have been sown, water everything thoroughly and place in your previously designated growing location. Check the back of each seed packet for the “days to germination” section. This information will give you a general idea on how long it will take the particular flower seeds to germinate. I recommend recording this information into a garden journal to stay organized. It will take 4-5 weeks to grow proper transplants of lettuce and up to 6-8 weeks for proper tomato and eggplant transplants. Discuss with your local county agent for additional information.

The LSU Tigers have had an up and down 2015 but you can’t say they’re not in a giving spirit. For openers, they gave up their “just down the road” future at quarterback when Felipe Franks decommitted to the Purple and Gold in favor of Florida. Yes, the handwriting was on the wall earlier in the month with Franks but Franks, being no dummy, was hedging his bet as the Tigers entered November with the gauntlet of four SEC powerhouses to face. Once the first chip fell (at Tuscaloosa) and the second one slid off the table (Arkansas at home, with the accompanying decline in quarterback play and lack of substitution or adjustment by Les Miles), the die was pretty much cast that Franks would change his mind. Then the school gave Miles the cold shoulder for a couple of weeks until it realized

it couldn’t get the shinier (but shopworn) coaching gift of Jimbo Fisher from Tallahassee and the Florida State Seminoles. No new (allegedly new and improved ) Star Wars offensively for LSU so they settled for Mr. Potato Head once again for 2016….and beyond!

A recent report about offensive coordinator Cam Cameron not being able to answer a question from another sought-after dual threat quarterback prospect has reared its head recently. Supposedly the prospect asked Cameron to “name one quarterback that the school (LSU) has developed in the past several seasons” when Cameron promised the kid development at LSU leading to a shot at the NFL. Guess what? There was reportedly no answer from Cam. We realize that the number of NFL quarterbacks from LSU or Alabama is severely lagging behind other positions but Nick Saban at least converts his QBs into confident game managers and allows his offensive coordinator to do his job. The last quarterback to lead LSU with confidence past seven games in any one season was Matt Flynn and that’s been eight years ago.

Another jostle came this week when…ooopps!…LSU higher-ups admitted ‘I guess we really did alter former LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis’s contract “but just a little bit”. Hey, six and seven digit dollar figure brain trust: that’s like being a little bit pregnant. Now, Chief will probably get his lawsuit settled in his favor while LSU takes it in the shorts again. There’s a new pain reliever ad on t.v. where one man offers a coach six other pills for his two Aleve tablets. The coach says “No”. I wonder what LSU would say if someone offered them anything for their one Alleva. But we know the answer to that question, don’t we? Speaking of Chavis, his current employer, Texas A&M, is a welcome addition to LSU’s life for a couple of reasons. One, the Aggies can’t beat as a member of the SEC even a disheveled LSU team and two, those guys lost not one but both their true freshman and redshirt freshman quarterbacks to transfer.

Even LSU can’t duplicate that feat and so the Aggies could possibly have a worse quarterback situation than the Tigers in 2016, who must depend on an inconsistent Brandon Harris, a third-string transfer from a second-rate Big Ten football program school and a head case former starting quarterback from Marietta, Georgia, who will be a junior and probably in charge of the clipboard one more year, if indeed, he even returns for more grief and being ignored. Until LSU can convince a developable prep quarterback that the school can actually do it, there won’t be any serious signal caller enrolling in Baton Rouge for some time. The school’s public relations team is now reduced to equal parts cah-cah and candor trying to explain to the public how the never-changing and never cutting-edge Les Miles Show continues to baffle most fans and football experts while the school itself tries to even outdo the confusion from the head coaches’ office.

We’d like to dedicate a few Christmas carols to members of the LSU family after this year (actually the last few years, but whose counting?).“Silent Night” - to Cam Cameron for his answer to the prospective quarterback recruit who asked about developing him as a next level quarterback at LSU. And also to the LSU Board of Supervisors and Joe Alleva for their deafening lack of response before the LSU/Texas A&M game this year regarding the status of Les Miles. “Oh, Come, All Ye Faithful” to the thousands of LSU fans who will continue to back averageness bordering on mediocracy as long as the Tigers are above .500. “Joy to the World”. Well, you see where this is going. “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” - a song that could reflect where LSU might spend its future postseasons without some major changes in philosophy and execution. “The First No ‘L’” (season without a loss). Our parades are unique, too; whether we’re parading our poodles, floats, boats, or lawnmowers, Northshore Mardi Gras Krewes throw a lot of loot!The Krewe of Bilge in Slidell and the Krewe of Tchefuncte in Madisonville are floating parades, where Krewe members decorate their boats in Mardi Gras colors and decorations and throw beads, doubloons, and trinkets to throngs of parade-goers on the bank.Pooch parades are family affairs, too. The Krewe de Paws in Slidell is a favorite, as is the Mystic Krewe of Mardi Paws in Mandeville. Open to all, Mystic Krewe of Mardi Paws is a family affair held on the Mandeville lakefront walking path along Lake Pontchartrain. Entire families traditionally “escort” their pets along the walking parade route in their Mardi Gras costumes, in elaborately decorated wagons and floats, congregating and celebrating under the hundred-year old mossy oaks. The Krewe of Push Mow decorates dozens of humorously themed homemade floats, many based on lawn equipment, for a funky and rousing cruise through the heart of Abita Springs, while the Northshore Krewes of Eve, Olympia, Selene, and Dionysis offer handcrafted floats and large-scale Mardi Gras parades in the typical New Orleans tradition.But those are just a few- for our complete Mardi Gras parade schedule of the Northshore’s family-friendly carnivals, see below. Saturday, January 9th • St. John Fools of Misrule, Covington – 6pmThe 5th Feast of Fools and March takes place 4-10pm. Its bawdy procession through Covington’s historic St. John District kicks off the season on the Northshore. The evening begins with a “Feast of Fools” at 4pm followed by a marching parade at 6pm led by a “Lord of Misrule”, flambeaux and a brass band starting at Columbia Street Tap Room & Grill (434 N. Columbia). The revelers follow a route along Lockwood St. west to New Hampshire St., south to Walker Alley and then north along Columbia St. to end back at the Tap Room. The St. John Fools of Misrule formed in 2011 to announce the arrival of Carnival season on the Northshore. Their slogan: Vivere Vita Omnino! – Live Life Completely!

Sunday, January 10th • Krewe of Claude, Slidell - 1pm Established in 1986 by the Washington Heights Tenant Association, members focus as much on community service as the celebration of Mardi Gras. The krewe name was derived from the street on which the housing complex is located, a former pecan orchard, inspiring the krewe’s tradition of throwing pecans.

Krewe of Poseidon follows Claude!New co-ed krewe with 338 riders founded in 2015. Starts at the intersection of Berkley Street and Spartan Drive, and follows a route northwest to Highway 11, northeast to Hwy 190, and east through town just past the intersection of 190 and Kensington Boulevard.

Implemented by Chief Randy Smith in 2012, Slidell Police will continue the annual tradition of the famous “Safe and Sober” ride home program in Slidell.As part of Chief Smith’s Merry Christmas and Happy New Year’s message, he wants to encourage

drivers to make the right choice to not drink and drive. Chief Smith says, “If you know you’re going to be drinking alcohol, get a designated driver or call a cab. If for some reason you cannot find a way to get home, call the Slidell Police Department, and we will provide you a safe ride home. This option is much better than getting behind the wheel of a car and risk hurting yourself, or someone else. ”

Starting today, and ending after the New Year, Slidell Police officers will provide anyone, who lives in Slidell, a safe ride home during this holiday season. NO QUESTIONS ASKED! If you don’t live in Slidell, police will attempt to find a safe means to get you home. Chief Smith is also increasing DWI patrols and will have a zero tolerance for impaired drivers. “We are giving everyone an opportunity to get home safely. There is no excuse to be on the roadway impaired, especially if we are offering everyone a safe ride home,” says Chief Smith.

So far this year, there have been no traffic fatalities inside the city limits of Slidell. Slidell Police Chief Randy Smith says, “Normally, we average two – three fatalities a year. This year we’ve had none. I would love nothing more than to finish the year with no fatal accidents on our roadways.”Citizens are asked to call the Slidell Police Department at 985-643-3131 if you need a safe ride home. This will be offered through the start of the New Year in order encourage drivers to be safe during this holiday season.
