a noRthside based canine welfare charity has expressed concern over figures released last week that show over 2,000 dogs were seized by war-dens or surrendered by owners in the general dublin area last year.

The shocking statistics from the De-partment of Environment include 627 dogs in Dublin City and 353 in Fingal. Of these, sadly, 126 were put to sleep.

Many of the dogs end up at Ashton Dog Pound in Dublin 15, which operates dog control on behalf of local authorities including Fingal and Dublin City coun-cils.

However, with hundreds of dogs arriv-ing every month it’s not possible to find homes for them all and pounds depend on animal charities like Finglas based Dogs Trust and the DSPCA.

Where’s the puppy love?Dogs Trust said that while na-

tional figures for dogs seized or surrendered were down six per cent on last year, the charity re-mained concerned at the high numbers still entering pounds.

“The reality of today’s figures show that up to 40 dogs entered Irish pounds each and every day during 2014,” said executive di-rector at Dogs Trust, Mark Beaz-ley.

“When a dog is picked up by a dog warden and enters the pound system as a stray, there’s a legal obligation to keep the dog for five days in case the owner comes for-ward looking for their pet.

“However, when a dog is hand-ed over by its owner, the pound has no legal obligation to keep it for any length of time and the dog could be put to sleep the same day.

“The majority of these dogs are healthy animals surrendered by owners who cannot or, in some cases, will not care for their pet any more.

“Dogs Trust never destroy a healthy dog and our message to dog owners is very simple – please be a responsible dog owner by neutering and micro-chipping your pet.”

The chimney was built in 1935 on the site of the former factory. The factory facade and associ-ated front boundary which fronts Botanic Road is already a pro-tected structure and the chimney already had a lower level of pro-tection. The Players’ factory was a vital source of employment be-tween the two world wars when cigarette sales were at an all time high. Officials who surveyed the site say that as a major employer in the Dublin area, the site is of social and architectural interest.

They also pointed out that it’s a local landmark visible from sev-eral vantage points in the area and a reminder of the former in-dustrial use of the site.

Local TD Róisín Shortall re-cently asked council officials to survey the red-brick chimney and they’ve now recommended that it should be added to the list.

Local councillors considered the recommendation at a recent area meeting and have approved the report. The final step is to put the proposal before a meeting of the full council where it is expect-ed to be passed.

When that happens it’ll mean the chimney can’t be knocked down or altered without written

approval from the council, and there can be heavy fines imposed if any unauthorised works take place.

“It is an elegant local landmark and an important part of the so-cial history of Glasnevin,” said Deputy Shortall. “It’s vital that we hold on to as much of our her-itage as possible as once we’ve lost it, it’s gone forever.

“The area surrounding the chimney has been earmarked for residential development. It’s important that these protections are put in place before any devel-

A LANDMARK chimney stack on the old Players’ tobacco factory site at Botanic Road is set to be added to Dublin City Council’s list of protected structures.

Dogs Trust actively works with pounds across the country in order to rehabilitate stray and abandoned dogs and rehome them through their canine centre in Finglas.

Last April the charity took in dozens of dogs seized in a raid on a Carlow puppy farm and found homes for them after a public ap-peal.

“Of the dogs entering our Re-homing Centre, 70 per cent have come directly from the pound sys-tem with the majority of them be-ing there, through no fault of their own,” said operations manager at Dogs Trust, Catriona Birt.

“No breed is exempt from be-ing abandoned or surrendered.

Since we opened in 2009 we have rehomed almost 5,000 dogs and we have genuinely seen almost every size and type of dog come through our doors.”

Dogs Trust is currently operat-ing at full capacity with over 208 dogs and puppies in their care, including pregnant bitches, week-old puppies and golden oldies.

Dalymount included in Phibsboro planJack Gleeson

A DRAFT local area plan for Phibsboro that includes an objective to retain Dalymount Park as a recreational and sporting centre for the wider area has been welcomed by Bo-hemian FC.

The new Dublin City Council plan says retention of both Bohs and Dalymount Park within the heart of Phibsboro would be a positive move for the future of the area.

It also states that opportuni-ties that enhance the Dalymount Park site as a sporting venue will be supported.

There has been growing con-cern amongst Bohs’ fans over the future of Dalymount and an expected ground share deal with Shelbourne FC. Dublin City Council has agreed in principle to purchase the historic stadium for €3.4m, which will wipe most

of Bohs’ debts.If the deal proceeds, it’s ex-

pected that the FAI will lease Dalymount Park from the council and the stadium would be shared by Bohs and Shelbourne.

However, a deal would be con-tingent on Shelbourne handing back its lease on Tolka Park to the local authority so the land could be developed for housing.

Shels fans are opposed to the move and with no guarantee that

the plan will go ahead, the Phib-sboro club is concerned that the deal will collapse leaving Daly-mount Park with an uncertain future.

The inclusion of the historic stadium in the draft local area plan offers some measure of comfort and hope that it will be developed, even without the Tol-ka Park deal.

In a statement on its official website, the club said: “Bohemi-

“The plan supports retention of the sporting use of Dalymount ‘with objectives to see it en-hanced and extended to provide a wider sporting, recreational and community use’.”

the State’s coffers. The Minister has indicated that the

money will go into a new “connectivity fund”.

But here’s a mad thought: wouldn’t it be great if a sizable portion of the €335m could be ringfenced for volun-tary or charitable organisations that are struggling to provide services?

Money could be allocated, for instance, for the ISPCC’s invaluable Childline service. Barnardos could also be worthy recipients of a fund set aside from the Aer Lingus cash.

After all, hasn’t the Government committed to ending the scandal of child poverty in Ireland?

On RTÉ’s ‘Claire Byrne Live’ pro-gramme last week, a member of the audience spoke movingly about the funding crisis for Alzheimer care in this country.

The lack of State support for families affected by this cruel condition, par-ticularly carers, is one of the greatest injustices in modern Ireland.

Extra funding for respite care is just one area that could benefit from the IAG deal.

The list of groups that could enjoy an Aer Lingus social dividend is endless, from those working with the homeless to suicide prevention and disability organisations.

Think about what the money could

do for the Irish Cancer Society or Irish Hospice Foundation, to name but two deserving bodies.

Of course, the windfall could go

towards paying off some of the coun-try’s debts or give the Government a bit more leeway in reducing the tax burden for middle earners in future

budgets.But wouldn’t it be preferable to

see the money spent where it’s most needed?

THE Government’s decision last week to sell its stake in Aer Lingus paves the way for a bumper payday for the airline’s shareholders if IAG’s €1.36 billion deal gets over the finish line.

The State itself will enjoy a €335m windfall – a considerable sum in post-recession Ireland where we are constantly reminded by politicians that resources are still scarce.

After seeking assurances from IAG, Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe firmly believes that this is the best deal available for the country and the na-tional carrier, which has come through some challenging times.

Hospice journey celebrated at official openingJack Gleeson

THE long journey to provide high quality hospice care in Dublin West took a huge step towards conclusion last week with the of-ficial opening of St Francis Hospice Blanchardstown.

St Francis Hospice has been providing palliative care to the Northside since 1989 and in 2001 it also took over the provision of services for the wider area of Dublin North West.

The need for another facility in Dublin West was identified a number of years ago and Blan-chardstown chosen as the most suitable location.

The Government allocated a 6.8 acre site on lands at Abbot-stown and initial funding for the project was secured through a combination of bank loans and local fundraising efforts.

The journey is not quiet over yet as outstanding bank loans of €7.5 million still need to be repaid through on-going fundraising ef-forts, but the recent official open-

ing presided over by Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin was certainly a cause for celebration.

Minister for Health, Leo Var-adkar, officially opened what he described as the “superb” 24-bed facility.

“It will make a real difference to patients and their families,” he added.

“It’s here today thanks to sup-port from the local community and very many others. The Dub-lin 15 Fundraising Group led by Fr Dan Joe O’Mahony and Fr Eugene Kennedy made a massive contri-bution of €7 million.

“I want to congratulate them for their fantastic effort, along with the Chairman Justice Pe-ter Kelly, and the Directors of St Francis Hospice Dublin.”

Minister Varadkar also paid tribute to the late former Minis-ter for Finance, Brian Lenihan, who secured land for the hospice and played a vital role in pushing the project forward.

“He is here in spirit, I am sure,” he said.

Justice Peter Kelly described the opening of the Blanchards-town facility as “critical” to ex-panding the range of specialist community palliative care serv-ices across the Northside.

“The 24 new in-patient beds at Blanchardstown, in addition to the 19 beds we have we have available at our Raheny hospice, will greatly help reduce waiting lists for in-patient services,” he said.

Board Representative of St Francis Hospice, Joe Fallon, said the hospice was a vital, long-awaited service for the Blan-chardstown area and all West Dublin.

“As a charity, we are very de-

pendent on the on-going support and generosity of the wider com-munity to help assist in repaying the €7.5 million bank loan and also in funding the day-to-day running costs of the new hos-pice,” he said.

“I would like to take this op-portunity to thank and praise the generosity of those who have contributed to our cause over the last few years and to add that any further financial support would be very much welcomed.”

Construction of the new hos-pice commenced in July 2009 and was completed in March 2011. Provision of revenue fund-ing from the HSE to open the in-patient unit did not happen until 2014, with the phased opening of the 24 beds taking place between September 2014 and February 2015.

The new facility also acts as a base for the Community Pallia-tive Care Team, an education cen-tre and a hospice day care centre

that opens two days a week. It’s hoped to extend this to four days as funding becomes available.

Between them the two North-side hospices, St Francis Hospice

Raheny and St Francis Hospice Blanchardstown, now provide a comprehensive range of special-ist palliative care services to a population of 580,000.

Hygiene Angels in Cabra school visit

THE young pupils from Christ The King BNS in Cabra got a fun lesson in germ-busting when they were visited recently by the nationwide ‘Hygiene An-gels’ primary school tour.

The visit was organised by hygiene experts from Initial Ire-land, who are visiting a number of schools across the country to educate schoolchildren about bacteria that live on hands and show how to wash them properly to avoid getting sick.

The germ-busting Hygiene Angels team is made up of Ini-tial’s best and brightest hygiene experts who have made it their mission to spread the word on the importance of hand wash-ing.

The team, led by germ expert Dr Colm Moore, uses UV glow gel and a UV torch to demonstrate how quickly bacteria can spread

when you open a door, turn off a light or shake hands with some-one.

MulhuddartMotocross Track could be blueprint

“There was a lot of really hard work put in by everybody to get this project to work and we now have a template that could ben-efit others.

“It’s something other councils and local communities around the country should take an inter-est in.

“The Motocross Club is now a limited company and they’ll de-velop a pack outlining the stages and steps we took to get from A to B so if anybody is thinking of developing something similar we can show them how we did it.”

The track is unique to Ireland because it’s located within a hous-ing estate and it’s community based, with local residents sit-ting on the Mulhuddart Motocross Club Committee alongside bike enthusiasts.

Situated right next to Parnell Housing Estate, the track is the result of three years hard work from dedicated bike enthusiasts, campaigning by the local com-munity and initiative from staff at Fingal County Council and Safer Blanchardstown.

One man in particular, Ruairi O’Dulaing of Fingal County Council, has been singled out for praise. It was Ruairi who approached young bikers after residents complained about them driving on waste land and helped them set up a club.

Philip Jennings of Safer Blan-chardstwn policing forum acted as in as a community mediator to try and bring both sides together and reach a compromise.

“Ruairi took a chance and took a lot of flack when the club was set up but it turned out to be a great idea,” said Philip.

Carey takes Red Cross roleFORMER Dublin North West TD and Government minister, Pat Carey, has been elected Chair of Irish Red Cross.

Carey, who served as Fianna Fail Minister for Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs, succeeds David J O’Callaghan, former secretary general at the Department of Defence.

Carey, who was elected Chair unanimously in a vote of the Irish Red Cross General Assembly last week, has experience ideally suited to the functions and future direction of the Irish Red Cross.

“His background in the area of overseas development and in the community and voluntary sec-

tor are a perfect fit,” a Red Cross spokesperson said.

“His work in these areas and in education and charity regula-tion are assets for the society as we extend our reach in support of vulnerable communities locally, nationally and internationally.”

Carey will oversee the on-going implementation of the Red Cross five-year strategy, which includes mapping local vulnerabilities and developing appropriate respons-es.

He’ll also supervise the provi-sion of financial and human re-sources for Red Cross Movement interventions internationally.

there’s an early event to mark the day at Hedigans (Brian Boru), Phibsboro, on Thursday, June 11 at 7.45. ‘Outrageous Preposterous Wrongs’ centres on writer Oliver St John Gogarty, who played for Bohemians during the 1890s while he was a pupil at Clongowes Wood school, where Joyce was later also a pupil. The pair lived in the tower at Sandycove for a period in 1904 and fell out over incidents that happened at that time. Written by Luke O’Riordan, Outrageous Preposterous Wrongs, explores the conflict through a rehearsed reading from The Tower, by Joe Joyce – a two-hander in which the writers look back at 1904 from beyond the grave – and a discussion between advocates for Gogarty and for Joyce.

FolloWing on from your puppy’s initial socialisation classes and experiences, we always recommend attending a train-ing class with your dog.

In history, dogs were bred for specific roles. Their agility, quick thinking, stamina, keen senses and communication abilities with humans made them invaluable for roles such as herding, guarding and hunt-ing.

Even to this day in society, dogs have jobs: guide dogs, search and rescue dogs and therapy dogs, for example.

However, the majority of dogs nowadays don’t have a role other than being a family pet and this can lead to them having sur-plus energy, which when not addressed can result in a noisy, frustrated and destructive animal.

A really good training facility, such as Positive Dog Training in Sandyford, will help you to understand your dog’s needs better and how to communicate with your pet so that you build a long-lasting rela-tionship.

Dogs Trust only endorses positive reward based training, which uses positive experi-ences to help your dog learn a wide range to tricks and necessary cues.

This will include giving a tasty treat when your dog gets something right, or even a quick game with their favourite toy! Learning should be a fun and enjoyable experience for both you and your dog. You should never use force or punishment for training.

On one hand, your dog is learning some pretty important instructions that will be invaluable in their daily lives: things like

liKe all carnivores, dogs have sharp, pointed teeth and short gastrointestinal tracts better suited to the consumption of meat.

In spite of this, dogs have still managed to adapt to survive on non-meat scraps from humans. But since the end of World War 2, dog food companies have been substituting large amounts of grain in dog food to save on meat.

The problem with this is that they have been using non-human and poor quality grade grains, which pass through a dog’s sys-tem without allowing them to ob-tain the nourishment required.

Dogs have little natural diges-tive support for breaking down complex carbohydrates and ce-real grains. These difficult to digest fibres and grains remain undigested, with the body rely-ing mainly on fermentation to

break them down (resulting in a lot wind).

Over a long period of time this can damage the lining of the di-gestive system, resulting in bowel inflammation disorders, food sen-sitivities, food allergies, obesity and leaky gut.

A PUBLIC appeal to find homes for a litter of nine sick puppies has ended in success.

The puppies were rescued from a raid on a puppy farm in Co Carlow and were suffering from a canine disease called adenovirus, which is a similar to hepatitis.

The litter most likely contract-ed the disease due to the horrific living conditions they had been kept in.

Finglas based Dogs Trust Ire-land had already taken in over 40 of the most vulnerable dogs rescued from the puppy farm but were struggling to find homes for the nine sick puppies.

However, following an exten-sive appeal, which was featured in Northside People last month, all of the pups have now been rehomed into temporary foster care for an expected period of 3-6 months.

One of those homes is that of Andy Smith from Finglas. Andy generously fostered three of the collie cross pups from what was probably Ireland’s most fragile litter.

Andy named them after counties in Ireland; Kerry, Mayo and Kildare, and says he’s delighted to be able to help.

“We were really keen to rehome a dog from Dogs Trust and when I heard that they urgently re-quired care for the rescued pups, we got in touch with them straight away,” he said.

“We’ve three of the pups and all three are best friends. They are great company for each other and you can see their personali-ties really coming on.

“They are feeding great and putting on weight each day which is really reassuring. It’s our first time fostering and we’re con-

scious they are still very vulner-able and need lots of vet checks but we’re delighted to be sup-porting Dogs Trust and playing our part, even temporarily, in caring for these dogs.

“We’d recommend fostering to anyone who is at home all day, loves dogs and needs some com-pany.”

Trust, Kathrina Bentley, said foster carers like Andy offer genuine com-mitment, patience and kindness to pups like those from the Co Carlow rescue.

“With 208 dogs on site here at our Rehoming Centre, we rely so much on foster carers to sup-port the work we do,” she added.

ers. Having contracted the Ad-enovirus from their horrendous living conditions, they require regular vet care from our team here at the centre.

Pharmacists warn of stress as Leaving Cert exam arrivesWITH the beginning of the Leav-ing Certificate this week, phar-macists are noticing a surge in visits by parents worried about the impact exam stress is hav-ing on their children.

Exam stress can manifest as stomach upsets, diarrhoea, cold sores, tension headaches and certain conditions such as asth-ma, sinusitis and allergic reac-tions can also be aggravated by stress.

Bernard Duggan, a pharmacist and honorary treasurer of the Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU), said: “The problems parents are talk-ing to us about are quite varied in nature and quite different in the level of severity of symptoms, ranging from regular tension headaches, stomach problems, interruption in sleep patterns to more severe anxiety.

“When stress takes hold, stu-dents under pressure are more prone to cold sores and other minor ailments, which can be

upsetting for both parents and students themselves.

”It is hard to avoid stress alto-gether but if any student or their parent is worried or wants some advice as to how to manage a stress-related minor ailment during exam time, they can talk to their pharmacist.”

Global campaign chooses Ballymun for Irish launchJack Gleeson

A GLOBAL political campaign supported by celebrities in-cluding Miley Cyrus, Madonna and Samuel L Jackson chose Ballymun for its recent launch in Ireland.

Rock The Vote was set up in the US in 1990 and uses music, pop culture and new technolo-gies to encourage young people to register and vote.

An Irish branch of the cam-paign was launched in The Reco, Ballymun, just before the two recent referendums on same-sex marriage and lowering the age of eligibility for presidential elec-tion.

Rock the Vote has been a stag-gering success in the US. Two years after its launch, election

polls showed a 20 per cent in-crease in youth turnout over the prior Presidential election, end-ing 20 years of declining youth participation.

In 2004, more than 1.2 million young people used the Rock the Vote website to register to vote and more than 15,000 Rock the Vote volunteers and local part-ners registered an additional 200,000 voters.

In 2008, Using a combination of online, mobile and grassroots outreach, Rock The Vote gener-ated more than 2.25 million voter registration applications and fuelled a third consecutive in-crease in young voter turnout.

Now a coalition of organisa-tions in Ireland – including youth groups, schools and electoral or-ganisations - are hoping to repli-cate its success in Ireland.

Charity group, Public Achieve-ment, holds a licence for Rock the Vote in the UK and Ireland and Rock The Vote organiser, Deirdre Dunne, explained why voting was so important.

“When you don’t use your vote you are not using your power, you are giving it away,” she said. “Politicians will not take young voters seriously unless we are serious about voting and partici-pating.”

Ballymun was chosen for the launch due to high levels of po-litical interest in the area.

The end of an eraAS THE last of the Ballymun blocks come tumbling down, albeit slowly, calls are being made to hold an event to mark the conclusion of the flats dem-olition job.

The last remaining blocks at Balbutcher are due to be fully demolished by October and Bal-lymun Councillor Noel Rock (FG) is calling on Dublin City Council to commemorate the event.

“For thousands of families, in-cluding myself, the blocks were

where we lived, grew up and spent a portion of our lives,” he said.

“Now, as the final flats at Balbutcher Lane begin to come down, I think it would be appro-priate to look at having a small event to commemorate this oc-casion.”

Cllr Rock has written to council officials with a few ideas for an event.

“I just think the event is a bit too important to simply let qui-etly pass,” he said.

Sciencefestival fun in the ‘mun

The Lets Talk Science Festival held late last month was organised by The Redis-covery Centre and Global Action Plan Ireland and it featured lots of interactive workshops for all the family.

The events from May 21-24 had the support from Science Foundation Ireland and were held in association with Dublin City Council.

The aim of Lets Talk Science was to celebrate and promote the contributions that science makes to society – past, present and future - and to encourage and inspire public perceptions of science and technology.

The festival also aims to make science more accessible for the local community and the general public through fun and interactive workshops.

Vanessa Moore, CEO, Global Action Plan Ireland said: “Both the Rediscovery

Centre and Global Action Plan Ireland have been actively involved in environ-mental education in Ballymun and the wider community for the past ten years.

“We were very excited about the festi-val and hope that it will further encour-age engagement with science throughout the entire community.”

Dr Sarah Miller, CEO, Rediscovery Cen-tre, said the festival brought together complementary skills from GAP Ireland and the Rediscovery Centre for the ben-efit of the community.

“It was a great opportunity for even more people to engage with science and we were delighted to have the support of Dublin City Council and funding from the Science Foundation of Ireland to make it happen,” she added.

Workshops that took place on Thurs-day, May 21, with local secondary schools

BALLYMUN’S first ever science festival brought a bit of colour and excitement to the area recently.

included Timber Tech, Evolution of Revo-lution (science of cycling) and Biomim-icry which were delivered by education teams from the Rediscovery Centre and GAP Ireland.

On Friday May 22, it was the turn of the local primary schools, with workshops on all aspects of science and technology including electricity, engineering, chem-istry, water and nature delivered by the festival team in Axis Ballymun.

Highlight of the festival for many was the family fun day on Saturday May 23 at

Ballymun Plaza, Ballymun Civic Centre and Axis, Ballymun.

All activities were free and led by expe-rienced science facilitators demonstrat-ing the range of ways science is present in our lives.

Activities included experiments and explosions, creating parachutes and wind turbines, investigating earthquakes and skyscrapers, exploring bugs and insects, giant bubble making and much more.

There was also a showcase of Redis-cover Fashion’s new collection for the

festival ‘Scientific Threads’ in the Civic Centre atrium as well as interactive ex-hibits and demonstrations from Sustain-able Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), Alimentary Adventures, Presentation Ecology, Bolt Sustainability, Recreate, Makeshop and Dundalk Institute of Tech-nology.

On Sunday, May 24, Global Action Plan and the Rediscovery Centre provided workshops and activities based in the Virgin Mary Community Garden, Bally-mun.

Craic mór agus ceol at BEO FestTHIS year’s BEO Ballymun Mu-sic Festival is shaping up to be the best one yet with a fantas-tic line-up of top acts.

Beginning on Tuesday, June 16 and running until Saturday, June 20, the festival features the leg-endary Altan who’ll take to the stage at Axis Ballymun at 8pm on June 20.

No Irish traditional band in the last dozen years has had a wider impact on audiences and music lovers throughout the world than Altan.

Hardly an overnight success, the band has been nearly 35 years together—the longest run-ning line-up of founding mem-bers in Irish music.

Altan showed they were ready to flex their musical boundaries when they started talking to Compass co-founder Garry West about the direction for their lat-est project.

With Garry in the producer’s

chair and many good friends in the studio, Altan fused the tra-ditional Irish music that they are known for, namely Donegal fiddling and Gaelic singing tradi-tions, with American roots music, particularly that of the Appala-chian bluegrass fiddle.

Other festival highlights in-clude Ladlane, an Irish folk band from Dublin who have been per-forming together for over ten years.

Their music is composed of high energy, creatively arranged traditional tunes mixed with tra-ditional and contemporary folk songs.

BEO Ballymun includes free lunchtime trad and ballad ses-sions in Axis café as well as work-shops and pop-up music events in Setanta.

There’ll also be performances from Radharc Ceilteach and a Céilí Mór culminating in a grand finale concert with Altan on Sat-urday 20. Altan are headlining the BEO Ballymun Music Festival ▪
