There is also strong evidence to suggest somepeople didn’t quite know what they were voting forand what a Yes or No represented. In Wexford, where the winning margin for the No side was just69 votes, there was 579 spoilt votes.

While many voters from rural Ireland who sharedthe view that the Seanad was unnecessary, toocostly, undemocratic and unrepresentative, will beshocked and frustrated with the result, they willbe less concerned with the urban-rural issue thatwith the decision of the government to run theReferendum at this time, with inadequatepreparation and during a period when they areenduring a general public backlash on other issues.

Dalata, the hotel group founded in 2007by Sligo man and former Jurys Doylechief executive Pat McCann, saw its

revenues climb last year by 55 per cent to!54.1 million, according to accounts detailsreleased last week. It added five newproperties in 2012.

In Sligo, the group controls the ClarionHotel in Sligo Town and the Diamond CoastHotel in Enniscrone.

Dalata’s operating profit more thandoubled to !3.2 million but it still made a lossof !2 million after charging interest and tax.About !4.1 million of the interest charges, however, were paid out on loan notes held bythe company’s shareholders, includingMcCann.

Dalata owns the 12-strong Maldron chain ofthree and four-star hotels, which includes oneproperty in Cardiff. It also operates a further22 unbranded hotels in Ireland undermanagement contracts, mostly on behalf ofbanks and receivers. It is backed by TVCHoldings and private clients of Davystockbrokers.

“Trading conditions in the sector improvedin 2012 with increased demand growth inDublin. As the year progressed there wasevidence of stabilization in the rest of thecountry,” Dalata’s directors said, beforeadding it is continuing to look for expansionopportunities.

The five-star segment of the market isleading a rebound of hotels in the capital, according to a recent study by CroweHorwath consultants, which also found thatDublin properties had occupancy of 74 percent last year while rates at luxury hotelsclimbed 10 per cent.

The Dalata directors continued: “Theoutlook for 2013 is positive with furthergrowth expected in earnings, driven bygathering and conferences and events, particularly in Dublin.” The capital’sconference market is expected to receive a15 per cent boost next year following thelaunch of Google’s Foundry research centre, which will bring an extra 15,000 overseasdelegates to the city each year.

Dalata highlighted the special 9 per cent

VAT rate for tourism related services, and saidit has boosted its trade. “The rate hasensured the group remains competitive in adifficult marketplace and has increasedemployment,” it said. Michael Noonan, theMinister for Finance, has hinted he is likely toincrease the rate in next month’s budget, however, as it was only ever a “temporarymeasure” that costs taxpayers !360 millionannually.

Dalata is examining further expansionopportunities in the UK, and is believed tohave held talks with institutions aboutobtaining finance for any expansion. Thegroup has bank debts of just !8 million, butowes its shareholders about !31.5 million inloan notes, which pay out interest of 9 percent each year. The accounts state, however, that the loan notes must only be paid back ifDalata is sold, lists on the stock exchange, orsells some of its assets. The shareholdershave shared almost !19 million in interestpayments since 2007. Ballymote nativeMcCann invested !1 million of his own cash inthe notes, according to the accounts.

The Junior Tourism Minister is hopefulthat the 9% VAT rate for the hospitalityindustry will not be raised to 13.5% innext month’s Budget.

Earlier this week, Finance MinisterMichael Noonan suggested the VAT ratemay return to 13.5%, which hasprompted hoteliers and restaurantowners to remind the Government howsuccessful the lower VAT has been overthe past two years.

Minister Noonan now says a decisionon this will not be confirmed untilBudget Day, and Mayo-based MinisterMichael Ring told Midwest News todaythat he will continue to campaign forthe 9% to be retained.

Minister Ring has also welcomed thelatest CSO figures, which show a 6.5%increase in the number of overseasvisitors to Ireland for the first 8 monthsof this year.

Minister Ring Hopes 9%VAT rate for HospitalityIndustry will remain

THE HSE finds itself in the wars in recent weeksover a renal dialysis unit at Mayo GeneralHospital which is lying idle despite a sum of !1.8

million being invested in extending the over-stretchedfacility.Work has been completed under the HSE’s 2012capital programme at the Castlebar site in upgradingthe unit, but it cannot reopen to patients until aspecialised filter system is installed.

Patients are currently being treated in temporaryaccommodation at the former St. Mary’s Hospitalwhere there are 10 beds in place.

The new facilities had been due to be commissionedin June before a lack of funding to erect the filtersystem forced a postponement.

There had been 54 patients on renal dialysis in MayoGeneral Hospital before the extended unit was built, with others waiting to use the service.

At present, the overflow is catered for in Galway, which means that some patients have to undertake aseveral hour round trip to avail of essential medicalintervention up to three times every week.

An independent member of Castlebar Town Council,Councillor Michael Kilcoyne, said it was incredible theHSE had spent !1.8 million on a facility and could notfind a relatively small sum in comparison for the filtersystem.

“The longer this situation prevails, the greateragony patients from this county must suffer intravelling to Galway for dialysis. It’s imperative thisissue is resolved as a matter of urgency,” he argued.

Local Fianna Fáil Councillor Blackie Gavin concurredwith Councillor Kilcoyne.

“It is totally unacceptable that this is happening,”he added.

WHILE County Mayo is cursing their All-Irelandfinal day bad luck again, it was not all doom andgloom in the Citywest Hotel last week-end asMayo’s triumphant minor team did their best tolift the gloom and remind the audience there wasan important piece of silverware present, theTom Markham Cup. It may not have been the big one they had allbeing waiting so long to get our hands on, buttheCup in question has a history all of its ownand Stephen Coen, Mayo minor captain, was aproud man as he led his team-mates into a roompacked with some 1700 guests.

Twenty-eight years is a long time for afootballing mad county like Mayo to go withoutwinning a minor title and there is no doubt thatthe victory over Tyrone gave everyone a chanceto celebrate, a chance that so obviously wasn’tthere at previous banquets in the aftermath ofthe recent senior defeats in 2004, 2006 and 2012.

Most of the players looked uneasy, acceptinghandshakes and pats on the back, and as Andy

Moran explained, their main concern was thatthey did not want to take away from themarvellous victory of their younger counterparts.

All of the speakers, Paddy McNicholas, MayoCounty Board Chairman; Frank Burke, Presidentof the Connacht Council and senior manager,James Horan, re-emphasised the greatachievement of the minor team but Horan wasalso keen to impress on the U-18’s that this couldjust be the start of a great footballing journeyfor them during their playing careers.

Both captain Stephen Coen and manager EndaGilvarry spoke eloquently about what the victoryactually means to them, with Coen stating thevictory would mean he and his 30 or so team-mates would now be ‘friends for life’.

This prior planning had been done in the hopethat Sam Maguire would be hosting a party toremember. Sam had an able deputy in the shapeof Tom Markham, but the majority ofconversations were really about how Sam endedup in the Gibson Hotel with the Dublin team and

not in Citywest. At the end of the day Mayoended up marginally second best for the secondyear in a row at senior level, but the minors aretop dogs for 2013 - and that in itself is somethingto celebrate.

Hopes in young blood as Mayo licks wounds

Local TD Denis Naughten has called for part of thecash generated from the sale of Bord Gais to be ring-fenced to extend the gas network to towns such asCarrick-on-Shannon.

This would reduce the energy cost to localbusinesses in the County Town by !7m each year hehas claimed.

Speaking in the Dáil recently, Deputy Naughten said:“This is a golden opportunity for government tosupport existing businesses and create new jobslocally. We must ensure that some of the money fromthe sale of the company is ploughed back into jobcreation in this region.”

Deputy Naughten said that based on a report by theWestern Development Commission (WDC) the townwith the most to gain is Carrick-on-Shannon, whichwould benefit by over !7m/year if it were to getaccess to the gas network when compared with thecost of existing energy supplies such as oil based fuelsand electricity.

“Such savings for local business would not onlyprotect existing jobs but also make these townsattractive to future investment by Irish orinternational companies,” said Denis Naughten.

Wynne Family gathering at Hazelwood

Asuccessful Gathering weekend wasenjoyed September 6th – 8th bydescendants of the Hazelwood

Wynnes from far and wide, hosted by theHazelwood Heritage Society (HHS) as partof Ireland’s national tourism initiative tobring the Diaspora back ‘home.’ Theevent started with an evening launch anda warm welcome by both MayorCouncillor Marcella McGarry andCathaoirleach Councillor Pat McGrath.Graham Wynne of Calgary, Canada, thanked the HHS for organising the w.endand the group was also treated to a photomontage complied by Aidan Mannion andGerry Foley. Guests poured overextensive family trees and chattedthroughout the evening.

Beatrice Macdonald, HHS chair, in herspeech reminded the audience that“almost three hundred years ago Lt GenOwen Wynne II, when he built his houseat Hazelwood, made a huge statement tothe people of Sligo and beyond to theeffect that The Wynnes had arrived inSligo and were an important family and aforce to be reckoned with. In a similar

way the Hazelwood Heritage Societywere sending out the message that theyare intent on protecting the House andoverseeing its eventual renovation. Withcareful planning this renovationprogramme would provide hugeemployment for the area, and a welcomeboost to the local economy.”

The next day the family was treated toa tour of parts of Hazelwood House byarchitectural conservation expert WendyLyons. Wendy told those present thatHazelwood House, built by the Wynnes tothe design of Richard Cassells in 1727,was the first Palladian villa built by him inIreland, and was used as a model for allsubsequent houses later, i.e. Castletownand Powerscourt etc. “The architecturalimportance of this house cannot be overstressed, and it is vital that this greathouse is not allowed to deteriorate anyfurther”. “The Irish Georgian Society aremonitoring the situation closely”, saidWendy.

Lunch followed in the ‘Morning Room,’bringing the house to life again. A cruiseon Lough Gill on the Rose of Innisfree

then dinner at the Model rounded out thebig day. The weekend series of eventswas then brought to a close with anouting to Lurganboy, the original familyseat, where the group was treated to itshistorical background and generoushospitality at Lurganboy church, finishingwith a drive through lovely Leitrim, including spectacular rain-swollen‘wandering water gushing, from the hillsabove Glencar.’ Participants exchangedcontact information, with many planningto return to Sligo, bringing cousins unableto attend the first time!

Many thanks to all of those whoassisted in making this Gathering a greatsuccess: County Sligo Heritage Office,Mark MacSharry & Jackie McMahon, SligoLeader Partnership’s TÚS scheme, SligoField Club, and other volunteers. Tuam Conference on what it means to bea Catholic todayPope Francis has admitted that thechurch has been ‘small-minded’ oncertain matters while also saying thatchurch teaching has been ‘clear’ onissues. In his first extensive interviewthe Pope said that it is time to find a‘new balance.’ *

Is it a case of ‘too little too late’for many Irish Catholics? How rele-vant is faith today? Has it any mean-ing? Some of the issues facing be-lievers will be explored at ‘TheChallenges of Faith – Reflections onBeing a Catholic Today’ in the Ard RíHotel in Tuam on Saturday, October12th between 2.00pm and 5.00pm.

Everyone is welcome and admis-sion is free. Submissions from thefloor will be encouraged. Midwest Ra-dio presenter Monica Morley and FrPat Donnellan, the parish priest in Is-landeady, Castlebar, will speak abouttheir experiences of church, belief, difficulties and hopes for the future.Service, compassion, reaching out, rights and responsibilities are issuesthat will be explored by Monica Mor-ley while Fr Pat will highlight the pos-itive contributions of people workingtogether in a parish. The pope said:“This church with which we should bethinking is the home of all, not a

small chapel that can hold only asmall group of selected people. Wemust not reduce the bosom of theuniversal church to a nest protectingour mediocrity. I see the church asa field hospital after battle. It is use-less to ask a seriously injured personif he has high cholesterol and aboutthe level of his blood sugars! Youhave to heal his wounds. Then wecan talk about everything else. Healthe wounds, heal the wounds.... Andyou have to start from the ground up.“The church sometimes has locked it-self up in small things, in small-minded rules. The most importantthing is the first proclamation: JesusChrist has saved you. And the minis-ters of the church must be ministersof mercy above all. The confessor, for example, is always in danger ofbeing either too much of a rigorist ortoo lax. Neither is merciful, becauseneither of them really takes responsi-bility for the person. The rigoristwashes his hands so that he leaves itto the commandment. The looseminister washes his hands by simplysaying, ‘This is not a sin’ or somethinglike that. In pastoral ministry wemust accompany people, and wemust heal.”

Male Infertility – “asimportant as globalwarming”Whilst Gordon Ramsay and othercelebrities speak out most menremain silent.Leading Irish fertility clinic, ReproMed warns thatmale infertility continues to be a growing problem.A study from the European Science Foundation (ESF)has revealed a rapid increase in male infertility overthe past few decades. Whilst 1 in 6 people in Irelandare affected by infertility, and traditionally it wasbelieved that 90% of infertility issues lay withwomen, contemporary statistics reveal that in fact,40% of infertility issues lie with women, 40% withmen, 10% with both and 10% unexplained.

Declan Keane, Senior Embryologist and Director ofReproMed Clinics says “we are seeing more and moreIrish males coming to our clinics. Advances in tech-nology have allowed us to offer greater insight intomale fertility issues and we see men of all ages at-tending here to avail of our services. It’s importantthat couples seek advice to ensure that unnecessarytests are not carried out on women purely becausesatisfactory interest is not being taken in male is-sues.’’ Keane continues ’’Many males attending ourReproMed clinics have expressed feelings of failureat not being able to provide healthy sperm to theirpartner to conceive their child naturally. This feelingof a loss of “masculinity”, while unwarranted, canlead to stress and strain on the relationship and insome cases depression.“ Gordon Ramsay talks abouthis infertility and his low sperm count. Hugh Jack-man, Dennis Quaid and Robert De Niro are also vocalabout their experiences of infertility. Keane believesthat the stigma attached to infertility is preventingmen talking about this hidden problem.

Neils Skakkebaek, a professor at the University ofCopenhagen and co-author of the report says: ‘’Theimportant impact of men’s reproductive health on acouple’s fertility is often overlooked’’.

The ESF study uncovered that 1 in 5 males aged18-25 are affected by sub fertility – low semen qual-ity and quantity. This can be caused by issues theyare born with, such as undescended testes whichlater can be linked to testicular cancer in youngmales. Infertility can lead to stress; strain on rela-tionships; and particularly in men, a feeling of fail-ure. In the sub fertile general population, themajority of couples will eventually successfully be-come pregnant within a year with little or no inter-vention. This can come about through changes inlifestyle, diet and more often than not, a consulta-tion with a fertility expert, which can help a coupleto relax, leading to natural conception.

Fertility issues in men come in different forms:• 15% of males are affected by a varicocele – an

enlarged vein located in the scrotum which, if tem-peratures rise, can decrease the quantity and qualityof sperm

• Undescended testicles is a common defect thatmales can be born with and can lead to fertility is-sues in the future

• Orchitis – inflammation in the testicles/genitaltract is also a common cause of male infertility

• Unhealthy diet and lifestyle can also damage orinterrupt sperm production

WeBuyAnyCar.com‘loves’ prankster’s fakecompany letter

A50-year-old forklift driver wasleft bemused after checkoutstaff asked him to prove that

he was over 18. Father-of-threeCharles Brown, from Huddersfield,West Yorkshire, had gone into hislocal Morrisons to buy a bottle ofrum.

The youthful-looking dad had tocontend with a member of staff onthe tills as well as a manager due tonot having any proof of age on hisperson.

Mr Brown, who turned 50 in July, managed to buy his booze in theend after convincing staff, at thesupermarket branch in Elland, thathe really was the age he said hewas.

Many supermarkets and off li-cences use a ‘Challenge 25’ rulewhich means that staff have to askfor age ID from anyone that looksunder 25.

While fed up with the constantIDing, Mr Brown said that he does, still, take it positively: ‘I take it as acompliment but it’s getting a bitfrustrating. I think they need to re-train their staff.

‘I know I don’t look my age butthere’s no way I’m 24,’ he added.

Morrisons reiterated its adoptionof the Challenge 25 policy and saidthat it takes its responsibility ‘veryseriously.’

‘We hope Mr Brown took the re-quest as a compliment as he mustlook very young for his age,’ aspokesman said.

Lisdoonvarna dismay at lack of men at historymatchmaking festivalOrganizers of the Lisdoonvarnamatchmaking festival are facing anunusual problem — a shortage of eli-gible bachelors.

Chiefs of the six-week love festadmitted they’ve received com-plaints from single women, includingmany who’ve flown in from the U.S.looking for romance, that there aretoo few Irish men at this year’sevent.

And they fear the number of sin-gle males in the Co. Clare spa townwill drop to its lowest level for yearsthis weekend, when thousands of lo-cals head to Croke Park to cheer onthe county’s hurling stars in the All-Ireland final.

Local matchmaker Willie Dalysaid, “The festival has been verysuccessful this year. It’s probablybusier than it’s been for a goodnumber of years, because of thegood weather and the influence ofThe Gathering. “We’ve definitelynoticed that numbers are up, partic-

ularly women. But we’ve a shortageof bachelors. A lot of Americanwomen have flown in and they’vesaid there just aren’t enough Irishmen to go around.

“A lot of these women are dream-ing of finding romance with an Irishfella, but they’re struggling to findone this year.

“The problem’s only going to getworse this weekend when Clare playCork in the All-Ireland. We’ll be los-ing a lot of lads from Clare who’ll beheading up to Dublin. And there’llbe fewer bachelors from Corkaround too.

“So if there are fellas out therewho want to find a match, they’llnever have a better chance than thisweekend, because the Americanwomen will be falling over them.”

Daly, 71, a third-generationmatchmaker, said that since the endof last year’s festival, he’s conjuredup around 300 successful introduc-tions.

Earlier this month the Lisdoonva-rna love doctor welcomed “The Out-ing” to the festival for the first time- the town’s first-ever gay and les-bian matchmaking event.

“I hope we see a few more fellas

down here between now and theend of the festival. We don’t wantto see the girls go home disap-pointed,” said Daly.

This year’s love fest runs until Oc-tober 7.

‘Pregnant’ boy, 2, gives birth to his own parasitic twinDOCTORS in China were left stunnedafter discovering a two-year-old boywas carrying an undeveloped foetusinside his stomach.Xiao Feng had to undergo an opera-tion to ‘give birth’ to his own para-sitic twin after doctors in Huaxidiscovered the foetus.

The child was rushed to the operat-ing room after arriving at hospitalwith a severely bloated stomach, ac-cording to The Inquisitr.

Doctors say the foetus took up twothirds of Xiao’s stomach, resulting in

breathing difficulties for the child. The unborn foetus measured 20cm

in width and had also formed a spineand limbs, as well as fingers and toes.

Experts believe that the parasitictwin would have killed Xiao if it hadbeen left untreated.

Identical twins are formed when anegg splits in half after fertilisation, but conjoined twins are formed whenit fails to fully separate.

Conjoined twins can survive as‘parasites’ but not when one is ab-sorbed into the other twin.

A humourless letter purportedly from we-buyanycar.com which ‘landed on thedoorstep’ of a prankster has left the used carfirm scratching its head after it was unveiledas a hoax.

Jamie Jones created a fake letter whichlooked like it was from the company replyingto his attempt at selling them a child’s plasticcar.

The ostensible corporate ‘reply’ did therounds on Twitter on Saturday after it lookedlike the company was reprimanding Mr Jonesfor ‘wasting their time’.

But Mr Jones later tweeted: ‘I’m beingforced to admit that the letter was fake. WeBuy Any Car will buy any car and whateverelse they’re lawyers want me to say.’

Mr Jones’ photograph of the ‘letter’ hasbeen retweeted over 28,000 times, includingby Ant and Dec.

‘After reviewing your request that wevalue your ‘Little Tikes car’ and viewing theattached photo, we’ve come to the conclu-sion that you sent your request to simplywaste our time,’ the hoax letter began.

‘The frequency in which you alluded to thetoy as a vehicle and made reference to ourname ‘We Buy Any Car’ makes it clear youknew this result was forthcoming. We have nointerest in buying your item.

‘We’ve been kind enough to return yourphoto on the basis that you refrain from con-tacting us again,’ and was signed off by fic-tional employee Adam Jennings.

The letter was also shared thousands oftimes on Facebook, with many people on so-cial media believing the funny ‘reply’ to bereal.

The firm then took to Twitter to debunkthe hoax, while also joking that ‘Adam Jen-nings’ had been sacked.

A spokesperson for the company toldMetro: ‘We loved the hoax letter thought upby Jamie AKA Adam Jennings. It gave us a gig-gle and the engagement on Twitter has beengreat fun.

‘At webuyanycar.com we really will buyany car. We do love the colour of the LittleTikes and it’s clearly in good condition – buttoy cars are just not our area of speciality….maybe Jamie should try eBay?!’

On your wedding day, you’rethe star. Of course youwant to look like it, all the

while feeling comfortable in yourown skin and of course your dress.Often brides spent more timechoosing their wedding dress, than choosing the husband. Whiledress shopping can be veryexciting, it can prove verydifficult. Choosing a weddingdress that will impress is not a jobyou can do overnight, it takeshours of 'trying on' and browsingthrough magazines for ideas.

A wedding gown is one that youwill remember for the rest of yourlife, so make it be extra special. Not only has it to suit your figureand your skin tone, it also has tofit in with your personality. Before

you go out shopping, take sometime to establish the look or looksthat you like and ask the salesadvisor for them styles, to saveyou a lot of time and effort, sorting through dress styles yousimply won't wear. Sales advisorswill appreciate that you knowwhat you are looking for and willwork hard to find the dress thatmeets those wants.

Dress shopping When you do decide to go dress

shopping, make sure you wear thecorrect underwear, because youwill be spending a lot of timeshowing it to random strangers. Itis best to bring a shoe with a heelsimilar to the size of the heel youwill be wearing on the day, so you

can gain an idea of how much totake off your dress. Beware ofbringing your mother with youwhen trying on dresses, as mostmothers tend to get emotionaland shed a tear at each fitting, commenting; “that's the one”,“no that is the one”, “no wait, Ithink this one is perfect”. If shetends to do this on your first dayshopping for a dress, considerbringing your future mother in lawon the second, she at least will becompletely honest with you.

Even if you come away from aday at a bridal boutique, feelinglike you have not accomplishedanything or seen anything youlike, fear not, you have at leastseen what the store had to offerand will be able to eliminate

certain styles. It will also give youan idea of what styles to headhunt for in the future. Be carefulnot to hastily buy a dress that is afashion fad. After all you want adress that is timeless and elegant,so when you look back on yourphotos in the years to come, youwon't think 'what was I wearing?'

When picking a dress, keep inmind the time of year. If you arehaving a Christmas wedding, makesure your dress is heavy andmaybe purchase a shrug, so thatyou do not freeze, when it comesto posing for photographers. If itis a summer wedding, opt for alight material dress, so that youdo not over heat! The biggestmistake that a bride to be canoften make is ordering a sizesmaller than they actually are inthe hope that they will fit into itby the time the wedding daycomes. It often happens that abride fails to ditch the weight intime and has to fork out a smallfortune on letting the dress out.The same can happen if you loseweight. While you may beoverjoyed that you have slimmeddown, you may not be so happywhen you see how much it willcost you to get the dress taken in.

Slender and curvy Halter-neck tops expose

beautiful shoulders and well-toned arms. The halter-neck top

echoes the lower half of thedress, so if you have slim hips thehalter-neck will be an excellentcounterpoint.

A mermaid shape dress is idealfor curvy girls with balanced hipand bust measurements. It willbring out the Marilyn Monroe inyou. If you want Hollywoodglamour, this is undoubtedly it.

Strapless dresses look fantasticon slim women with a mediumbust. Strapless dresses can be veryelegant if you have a long neck, good shoulders and well-tonedarms.

Big BustedWell endowed women ought not

to go for strapless dresses, as itwill only put all the attention onone area. I

nstead, a large busted womanshould look at off the shoulderdresses, which move the attentionaway from the chest and onto theshoulders. Corsets or bodices aregreat choice for big busts, as ithides the bad bits and highlightsthe good bits. If you have a slim-hipped figure and a full bust, aball gown will balance top andbottom perfectly, giving you that"fairy-tale bride" look. The goodnews is that a V-line dress canlook fantastic on a well endowedwoman. The V-Line style plungesto the bust and is complimentaryto cleavage.

PetiteYour main goal with a square

body shape is to find a dress thatgives the illusion of curves. Afuller skirt and a lot of details atthe bust area, with a V at thefront or back, will create theillusion of a smaller waistline. TheA-line dress will also give theillusion that you are taller thanyou really are. Avoid a sheathstyle dress as it will make youlook shorter than you actually are.It is also advisable to avoid highnecks or halter necks, which makeshoulders appear narrow, and as aresult do not flatter that

waistline. If you are small all over, avoid the ballerina/full skirt styleof dress as it will make your bustlook smaller than it actually is.

TallIf you are tall, a sheath style

dress or column dress will flatteryour figure and frame. The Columndress hugs the figure and will giveyou the catwalk look. Avoid anempire line dress as it lengthensthe body even more. Go for a dresswith short sleeves, as it will breakup the line and make your armsappear smaller than they are. Adipped neckline can be very

complimentary to a taller womanwith a small to medium sized bust.It will give a hint of cleavage butnot enough to be described as'booby' and is perfect for peoplewho may be worried about showingtoo much. However it is good toremember that skin is sexy. This isyour day to shine, so do not shyaway. A dipped neckline dress canalso be good for hiding fleshyunder arms.

Bottom heavyIf you have concerns about your

hips, perhaps a two piece wouldbe a good option. An A-line skirt

lengthens the body. Long sleevedresses can look great on peoplewith wider hips, as it drawsattention to your upper body.Long sleeves will also conceallarger arms, and cover squareshoulders, provided that they areloose rather than close fitting.Long sleeves will also save youfrom getting goose bumps if youhave a winter wedding.

Full figure If you have a full figure, an A-linedress will lengthen the wholebody and move the focus awayfrom the waistline. An 'Empirewaist' dress is perfect for thosewho are concerned about theirfigure, as it is narrowest belowthe bust and conceal the hips andwaistline.

ColourIf you are not a big fan of white,

or just feel that you won't be ableto pull it off, then consider goingfor ivory, cream, champagne or adress with a tint. You also can lookat coloured dresses, to take a lesstraditional approach to thewedding attire. The key thing toremember is to make sure youchoose a shade that makes youstand out. In other words, avoidcolors close to your skin tones. For example, if the tone of yourskin is yellow, it is wise to avoidivory wedding dresses. Ivorywedding dresses will make youfade away. Similarly, those withvery fair skin should better notpurchase a pure white weddingdress. It will drain the person'slook and will not flatter their skintones. People with darker skinsfind it easier to purchase asuitable wedding dress, since mostof the white ones can flatter theirskins.

When it comes to planning awedding, few decisionsare as delightful as

choosing your wedding cake. Afterall, what could be better thansampling slice after slice ofdelicious cake. The cake is one ofthe most prevalent symbols ofyour wedding. It will featureprominently in your weddingpictures and it will be a focalpoint for your guests when theyarrive at the reception hall. Yourcake can pull together yourcolours and wedding theme in onebeautiful and delicious package.

When it comes to choosing awedding cake, you must firstconsider what it is you are lookingfor? Do you want a traditionalivory tiered cake? a modernchocolate and vanilla cake or fruitflavoured art piece? Whether youare utterly clueless to what you

want or have a good idea of thestyle of cake you want, next youmust visit bakers to see what theycan offer you. This task must bedone in good time (approximately4 months before the big dayitself). You should visit two orthree bakers and ask to see theirportfolio. This will help youdetermine if you like the bakersstyle.

In order to ascertain what sizecake you will need, consider howmany guests you will have inattendance. Remember, thebigger the cake, the moreexpensive it will be. One way ofsaving money is to order a smallercake for display at the receptionand two sheet cakes that can becut and placed on plates in thekitchen and served to the guests. The sheet cake can beconsiderably plainer than the

cake on display. This saves a hugecost and still means you get toshow off a cake!

When considering the shape andsize of the cake. Traditional roundand square cakes are still verypopular and easy to cut. Lookthrough wedding magazines andbakers samples to find a weddingcake design that dazzles you!

The cake's design should matchthe aesthetic of the day. A formalwedding generally calls for astructured, multi-layer cake. Fora less formal wedding, you canembrace the unconventionalcake.

Multiple tiers allows you tooffer several kinds of cake eachlevel can be different, offeringsomething for everyone. So if thebride is a fan of cheesecake, butthe groom is a big fan of fruitcake, you can now have both in

one cake. A common combinationincludes one tier - mouse filledcake, one tier fruit, one tierchocolate and vanilla cake, frosted with butter cream frostingor rolled fondant. Icingtraditionally comes in either asimple sugar recipe or rich creamcheese variety and usually iswhite or ivory, but morecontemporary approaches involveother colours. If you wearing ivoryor champagne, let the baker knowand they can tint the icingaccordingly. Remember, anythinggoes from dark chocolate to palepastels, with modern weddingcakes. They tend to be decoratedto match the bride's lace patternon her gown or even the bouquet. Some couples design the cakearound the decor or theme of thewedding. Brides often go for lace, embroidery applique or elegantdrapes. Common features include;ruffles, bows, swirls and ribbonsformed from pastiage and blownsugar. Cakes can also be garnishedwith real ivy leaves, non-toxicflowers and chocolate towers andtruffles. When it comes towedding cake, your imagination isthe only limit to the appearanceof your special confection.

While it is essential that thewedding cake appeals to your

visual senses, it is even moreimportant that it taste's moist anddelicious. Tasting is not only a funtask, but an essential one also. Donot just settle on a cake, becauseyou cannot see anything like whatyou wanted. Shop around for thebest offers and do not be afraid toask the baker if they can workwith your design and style, youmight just be very surprised athow accommodating they can be.It is always wise to bring alongcuttings of cakes you like andsketches of the style of cake youare looking for. Take samples ofyour dress, bouquet andbridesmaids colours to leave withthe pastry chef.

Ask the baker about additionalcosts, such as cake tops, pillars, columns and whether or not theseitems need to be returned to thestore. Also ask about the deliveryprocess. Will the cake be set upat the reception by the baker orwill the caterer have to do this?Once you have decided on a cakeand a baker, get a contract inwriting. There is no pointagreeing aspects orally, make sureyou have a written record of whatyou have ordered and are fullyaware that the baker knows whatyou are looking for, this will avoidany nasty surprises on the day.

Weddings can be stressful enough for a bride andgroom without the worst coming to the worst,so to give the happy couple a bit of peace of

mind, that in the eventuality that anything goes wrongon their special day, that they will be free from severfinancial outlays, opt for wedding insurance.

Wedding cancellation insurance is one of thoseaspects of your wedding that can feel wrong. It canalmost feel like you are making some sort ofassumption that suggests you have concerns andworries about the success of your marriage, but it isn't.Moreover, it is common sense. Wedding insurance isn'ta statement of uncertainty, it is your safety net. Itensures a worry free wedding, if something like severeweather postpones or drastically affects your wedding.Odds are you won't need it, but what would you do ifsomething did go wrong? Would you like the stress andworry of having to fork out money for an event thatnever even happened?

Like most insurance policies, wedding coverage istailored to each insured's personal needs and wants.Policies generally provide rescheduling, replacementor reimbursement for things such as cancellations, stolen gifts, lost rings and protects you against the losscaused by the failure of many of the traditionalelements of a wedding (wedding attire, photography, transport etc). When buying wedding insurance, its allabout getting the right level of cover for your needs. Ifyou are having a tight budget wedding, perhaps only gofor limited cover, but if you are organizing a lavishspread, perhaps it would be wise to make sure youhave comprehensive insurance. While prices vary fromprovider to provider, prices generally start at !89 for abasic insurance package up to !200 for all the extra'ssuch as honeymoon trip cover and legal expensescover. Remember the cost of a typical wedding withthe full works can be colossal, so it is well worthinvesting in insurance for the event.

When choosing weddingflowers, it is best to makeappointments with more

than one florist to view thearrangements they can offer youand compare them in terms ofprice, value and styles. Manychurches will have a contract witha florist, so you need to be clear onthis before you start booking. Thewedding bouquet is an extremelyimportant piece of the wedding

ceremony, as its a focal point. There are many types of bouquetshapes you can choose from, butthe common three are; Cascade,Round and hand-tied bouquets.

Cascading bouquets are great forslimming a bride's appearance, especially if a bride is worriedabout her hips. However, a roundbouquet emphasize the body shape,so if the bride has a good figure, why not show if off! Smaller framed

individuals generally opt for roundbouquets as it will give theappearance of elevated height.Slender brides often go for a handtied bouquet, as it balances bodyshape.

With style out of the way, nextyou will have to decide on theflowers themselves. While this isvery exciting, for some brides, itcan also be troublesome. 1 in 5Irish people suffer from an allergyto pollen. Hay fever sufferers canfind summer weddings a difficultexperience, as there is so manyflowers pollinating during thesummer season. If a member of thewedding party suffer from hayfever, it is best to opt for eitherartificial flowers or for pollen freeflowers such as Orchids, Calla Lillyor Roses. .Orchids petals appear tobe very delicate but a resurprisingly robust and canwithstand a lot of handling. Orchidsare the picture of elegance and aregreat anytime of year. Tulips havelong been another common optionas they are pretty and elegant.Roses are the classic flowers for abouquet and emanate radiance andgrace. Calla Lilies are the latesttrend and are a sophisticatedchoice. It has become a moderntrend to mix white calla lilies withone black 'schwarzwalder' calla, asa striking vocal point.

However, if hay fever is not aconcern, your choice of flowers isendless. Why not opt for redChrysantemum's which symboliselove or amaranths which aresymbolic of fidelity. White andpink Lily flowers are a popularchoice for summer weddings, whilelilacs are often picked for springweddings to bring a touch of violetto the bouquet. Brides often go forforget-me-not flowers as they aresymbolic of true love and add alovely touch of indigo to thebouquet, which in spring can lookfantastic, mixed with whitechrysanthums. If you are not a biglover of flowers, tulips are the best

choice as they can be kept simple, without too much frills or foliage.

In terms of cost, the prices canvary from florist to florist, but astandard bouquet will set you backin the region of !100. Bridesmaidsbouquets can tally up to a similarcost, so its best to go into theflorists with a budget in mind. Aword of warning, in season flowerswill dramatically reduce yourflower bill, compared to orderingflowers that are out of season.

A trend that is emerging inmodern weddings is to use silkflowers. The idea behind using silkflowers is that many brides like theidea of being able to keep thebouquet as a keepsake. Silkwedding flowers are available fromfloristry shops or online and are anovel way of having lastingmemories from your wedding day.

Now that the bouquet is out ofthe way, you need to start thinkingabout other members of yourwedding party. Corsages andbuttonholes are great forgroomsmen, while Boutonniere'sare ideal for parents of the bride

and groom and other members ofthe family. They are a great way ofincluding members of the family, that may not have a role in theceremony also.

Once you have all the peopleaccounted for, you need to startthinking about the venue flowers.Since the altar will be the focalpoint of your ceremony, considerusing the most elaborate andbeautiful decorations on it. Manyweddings now include flowers atthe reception, as they bring thescents, the colour and the style ofthe marriage to the evening sectionof the wedding day. The mood youwant to create for your guests canbe your guide in helping you decideon appropriate floral arrangementsfor a wedding reception. Consideryour dinner plan, will you need aflower centre piece for guesttables? for the cake stand? for thegift table? or for the dance flooredge? All of these will push up theoverall costs, so choose wisely andcut out where flowers may not beneeded, to help keep the costdown.

It isimportant to shop around, pay attention tophotographers style. Doesthat photographersportfolio excite you or boreyou? Would you like asimilar photo collection ofyour wedding day? If youare not keen on thephotographers work, lookelsewhere.

You should also go and

visit the photographer, tosee if you like the person. You need to make sure youfeel comfortable with thephotographer, as they playa huge part in your weddingday line up. Look for aphotographer that makesyou laugh and feel relaxed. It is important that you lookhappy and at ease in yourwedding photos.

Compare variousphotographers rates interms of value for moneyand what services andpackages are they offeringyou! Do not be afraid tonegotiate the price and askabout add ons such asSlideshow DVD andvideography. There are

photographers to fit anypocket, but generallyspeaking you are looking atanywhere between !1,500 -!2,500 for a decent sizedalbum, produced by acreditable photographer.Photographers who chargebig money for their servicesdo so for a variety ofreasons, so do not be afraidto ask why they are somuch more expensive thenanother photographer inyour locality. The mostimportant thing toremember, is to know whatyou are getting for yourmoney. Make sure you knowwhat kind of album you areagreeing to and do not beafraid to ask about how the

photos will be grouped inthe album. Ask thephotographer about thekind of photo's he or shewill be taking. Are youhappy with all posedpictures, which give you aglamorous fashion shootcollection? Or do you wantall 'reportage' photos, which are the opposite toposed pictures, where thephotographer catches thesubjects in action. Manybrides and grooms areasking for a balanced mixbetween the posed andreportage as it portrays abalanced story of the daysevents.

Make sure you are clearon copyright and licensing.

The copyright issue is amajor hot potato. Manyphotographers will keep thecopyright, which means youwon't be able to print re-copies for your familymembers later down theline, without using thephotographer in question. Some photographers willgive you a CD, which youcan have printed again.

One golden nugget ofadvice is to seekrecommendations and askother brides and groomsabout their photographersand their satisfaction withthem. This will help you

decide on a photographerthat is right for you. Onceyou have decided, it is wiseto meet the photographerbefore the wedding day todiscuss location, the plan B,if the weather lets youdown, the time spend onshooting and the photoplan. Perhaps you want anumber of friends photos, family photos, romanticphotos and a few comedicphotos, make sure you givethe photographer a headsup of what he will need tobring with him, so there isno shocks on the day foreither party.

Beautiful storybooks produced in house • 30 Years Experience

Why not ring us for a keen quote

You are getting married andwant a beautiful event, yetyou need to stick to a tight

budget. This is a problem thatfaces many brides. Don't worry;there are ways to have yourdream wedding without breakingthe bank

1Prioritize! Make a list of themost important things youwant for your wedding and

have your fiancé do the same. Areyou most committed to havinggorgeous flowers, inviting 400people, hosting the wedding at aparticular location, or servingfilet mignon and lobster? Knowingyour priorities before theplanning starts will help youdecide what to spend money on,and what you don't mind doingcheaply or doing without.

2Trim the guest list. This isdifficult but sometimesnecessary if the cost per

guest is going to break yourbudget. Cross off names on thelist of guests who might feelobligated to come to the weddingif they are invited, but would nothave their feelings hurt if theyare not asked to attend. Think of

inviting only relatives with whomyou have a close relationshipinstead of everyone related toyou. Invite only the people whoare important to you and yourparents, rather than everyone youknow.

3Reduce the number of peoplein your bridal party. You haveto buy nice gifts for every

member of your bridal party, andthat adds up. Plus, traditionally, the entire bridal party plus theirdates are invited to the rehearsaldinner. Seven bridesmaids andseven groomsmen, all their dates, ring bearer and flower girls, andtheir families, plus both sets ofparents and all the readers in theceremony, plus officiant couldadd up to 40+ people to feed!

4Have your wedding ceremonyand reception held at ahotel, and ask for discounts

when family and friends arestaying at same hotel. Reserve ablock of rooms for your guestsseveral months before thewedding for the best rates. Speakwith the appropriate managerwhen asking for discounts andreserving rooms.

5Stick to the schedule for yourceremony and reception.Musicians will charge more if

asked to perform beyond the timestated in their contract. You willalso incur additional limo chargesif your event runs longer thanplanned.

6Ask friends to lend theirtalents by helping out withsuch things as invitations,

flowers, and programs. Ask afriend with pretty penmanship toaddress your invitations instead ofhiring a calligrapher. If yousimplify your flowers andarrangements, perhaps a friendcan assemble fresh or silk flowerswhich will save you hundreds ofeuros. Some of the mostattractive wedding programs areprinted from a home computerand then creatively assembledwith coloured cardboard, tissuepaper, ribbon, etc.

7Consider having yourwedding any day butSaturday. Fridays are also

popular wedding days but maycost a lot less than a Saturdayevent. For even greater savings, choose a weekday evening for

your wedding. Schedule thewedding to allow guests time toarrive at the ceremony after thework day has ended. Many guestsenjoy weekday weddings as thisfrees up their weekends for otheractivities. Choose a date betweenNovember and April (between Mayand October if you live in thesouthern hemisphere) to avoidhigher peak season rates in manyareas.

8Professionally posed andproperly lighted photographsare one of the few beautiful

keepsakes you'll have from yourspecial day, but getting themdoesn't have to break the bank.Choose an EXPERIENCEDphotographer who will includeALL OF THE IMAGES ON A CD forone low price. Then you can makeas many inexpensive copies as youneed rather than pay a hugereprint fee to the photographer. Also, consider a private pre-wedding encounter for the brideand groom followed by all of theposed photography. Completingeverything before your weddingmeans you can spend the entireremainder of your day enjoyingyourself and the company of your

guests. (Guests can't stand to bekept waiting between thewedding and the reception.)

9After looking at the finalplan of your wedding, butbefore paying any deposits,

decide where you can simplify thewhole process. Consider whetheryou really need choral singers anda string quartet at the ceremonyand a wedding singer and a DJ atthe reception. Releasing doves orbutterflies or having a candle-lighting ceremony are allwonderful, but may end upcosting a lot of money. Simplicitysaves money and if done well, your wedding may seem moreserene and awe-inspiring.

10Remember that thewedding is one day atthe start of a life-long

commitment. Look beyond the wedding day

to the goals you will have asnewlyweds.

If you want to purchase a housein the next few years, keepingthat as a priority throughout thewedding planning process willhelp you to be prudent about howmuch you spend on that one day.

1. Mobile phonesWe've got to stop using them atthe wheel. Think of trying todrive with one hand tied behindyour back. Or your eyes closed. It's much the same thing. If it isso important that you shouldtake a call, then pull over andgive it your full attention.Driving requires your fullattention. A second's distractionat 100km/h means you travel'blind' for 88 feet. That is howmuch ground you are covering.PLEASE, if you do nothing elsethis week – STOP.

2. ChildrenPlease make sure they aresecurely strapped into your car. Iam shocked at how often I seethem given the freedom of thecabin by otherwise doting andloving mothers and fathers. Butthey are reckless mums and dadsif they expose their children likethis. Make sure the child-seatsare properly secured, too.

3. LightsTurn on your lights in theevenings. I have been amazed atthe number of cars I've met overthe past few weeks wherepeople have driven off, understreet lights, without a flicker ofillumination on the car. Suddenlythey are in darkness and can'tsee or they are in darkness andcan't be seen. Really dangerous.

4. Thought for deedJust because you indicate doesnot give you the right to do whatyou are signalling. Two narrowescapes for me have taught methat people are not reallythinking much of the time. Theyput on the indicator and straightaway pull out. I would say I'venever seen people so pre-occupied. And that is dangerous.

5. Shortcut cyclistsThere are junctions andjunctures where cyclists findthemselves at the end of their

track. There is always thetemptation to cut in or out, ortake a shortcut. Too many take achance. Again, I'm taken aback at the numberscycling at night without a light ofany sort.

6. Pedestrian dodgersYou can't just dodge your waythrough traffic when crossing theroad. Stop. It has reached thepoint of madness the way peoplefeel they can take to the roadwhile traffic flashes past them.

7. Roundabout horrorsWe should all go back to ourRules of the Road. Nobody knowswhat to do in roundabouts. If youwant to save yourself the priceof a scary movie, watch the hair-raising antics at the SandyfordIndustrial Estate roundabout anyweekday morning.

8. Speed merchantsIf we all knocked 10kmh off ourspeed, we'd be significantlysafer. Not only that, there wouldbe far fewer 'small' accidents andfar fewer repair and touch-upbills. Believe me, as one who hascut back, you will feel a lot saferand in control behind the wheel.

9. Lane hoggersFor God's sake stop hanging outthere on the outside lane of thedual-carriageway or motorwaydoing 70km/80km. It is ONLYFOR OVERTAKING. Got that? This causes huge angst and thedangerous practice of'undertaking' (people overtakingon the inside).

10. Red runnersStop running red lights. Thewhole place is at it. Two, threecars can pass through after thelights have gone red. Madness.

Anew Winter Fodderand FinancialSurvival Guide,

prepared by the interagency foddercommittee, waslaunched by theMinister for Agriculture,Food and the Marine,Simon Coveney TD atthe ploughingchampionships in Laois, today, Wednesday, 25September. The Guideprovides practicaladvice for farmers tomanage their fodderand feed reserves thiswinter and advice onmanaging their financialcash flow over thewinter period.

A survey carried outin the first week ofSeptember showed thatoverall there areadequate supplies, witha fodder surplus of 8%for a 140-day winter. However, it also foundthat one-in-five farmersface a deficit of 20% oftheir feedrequirements. Thiswinter fodder andfinancial survival guideis focussed at helpingthose farmers still witha deficit. It alsoincludes advice forother farmers on how tomanage their reservesin the event of anextended winter.

Speaking at thelaunch, chairman of theinter agency foddercommittee, Dr TomKelly, Teagasc said: ”Weurge all farmers to dotheir own fodder budgetand financial cash flowimmediately. With thisinformation they canthen plan for the nextsix months and use theinformation to explorethe best options fortheir own farms.“

Teagasc Nutritionist,Dr Siobhan Kavanaghsaid: “Farmers haveassumed a 140-daywinter feeding periodwhich does not allowfor an early winter or alate spring. The mostimportant advice is toact early. The farmersthat took steps earliestcame through lastwinter better.“

Fintan Phelan,Teagasc farmmanagement specialistsaid: “The higher costsincurred on farms thisyear has left manyfarmers in a tighterthan expected cashposition. We urge allfarmers to address theissue and complete a12-month cash flow

plan immediately. Withthis information theywill be in a betterposition to talk to theircreditors and agree arepayment schedule.“

If you've got chronic obstructivepulmonary disease (COPD), it'smore important than ever to get

some exercise—it can save yourlung function and slow down theprogression of COPD. The prob-lem? The shortness of breath thatcomes with exertion can make ittempting to move less than you didbefore. This sets up a vicious cycle:shortness of breath leads to inac-tivity, which leads to a decline in fit-ness, which leads to furthershortness of breath and inactivity.

To get out of the rut, MichaelBerry, PhD, chair of the departmentof health and exercise science atWake Forest University, in Win-ston-Salem, N.C., recommendswalking, stationary biking, and ellip-tical training. They work well forpeople with COPD, but strengthand resistance training are playingan increasing role in patients’ regi-mens.

As we age, people—particularlythose over the age of 60—lose

muscle fibers, according to Berry.Healthy people lose fast-twitchmuscles, which are used for shortbursts of energy. But individualswith COPD tend to lose slow-twitch muscles, which are used forendurance activities as well.

Weight training helps to improveskeletal muscle function so patientscan remain active longer. Exerciseof the lower legs—frequently walk-ing or cycling—is the main focus ofany organized exercise program for

COPD, says Gail Weinmann, MD,the deputy director of the NationalHeart, Lung and Blood Institute’sDivision of Lung Diseases, but exer-cising the upper arms through re-sistance training is also helpful.(Like anyone starting an exerciseprogram, a person with COPDshould be cleared for exercise by ahealth care provider, Dr. Weinmanncautions.)

If you have COPD, another ad-vantage of exercising the respira-

tory system is to learn how tocope with the panic that can occurwith shortness of breath.

“I have heard it described aswhen someone is hit in the stom-ach and can’t get their breath,”Berry says. “Exercise teaches peo-ple how to deal with that sensation,to work through it. They know theyare going to get up the steps, andthey will get short of breath, butnow they know, ‘I’m not going tokeel over and die.’”

Breathing techniques can fightpanicky feelings

Mike McBride, a COPD patientfrom Arvada, Colo., who racewalkswith oxygen in tow, says the firsttime he walked around his neigh-borhood for exercise, he thoughthe was going to have to call some-one to pick him up. Over the yearshe has had setbacks and haslearned his limits, but he continuesto exercise at the gym and walks atleast three times a week.

“Learning to deal with the panicis the first thing to get past,”McBride says.

Respiratory therapists offer twocommon breathing techniques:pursed lip and diaphragm breathing.Pursed lip breathing is performedby inhaling through the nose and

then exhaling through pursed lips(as if one is going to whistle). Theexhale should be longer than theinhale, but air should not be forcedout. This breathing helps peoplerelax and reduces the amount ofair trapped in the lungs. Diaphragmbreathing helps to strengthen thisimportant muscle and is accom-plished by lying on one’s back withknees bent and making the stom-ach, rather than the chest, moveout while inhaling and in while ex-haling. Patients are typically intro-duced to breathing exercises onlywhen they visit a respiratory thera-pist or participate in a pulmonaryrehabilitation program, Berry says, mainly because time-crunched pri-mary care physicians focus on exer-cise and smoking cessation.

McBride’s insurance would notpay for respiratory therapy, so heutilized breathing techniques helearned during Lamaze classesyears ago. He visualizes wringingout a towel when he starts to panicand concentrates on breathing outtwice as long as he breathes in.

“A lot of people don’t want todo anything because they are afraidof getting short of breath," he says."It doesn’t scare me anymore be-cause I have had enough experi-ence with the distress part.”
