make the trip, please do so. It is a lot of fun and you can learn from some
of the best.
So till next time, just
keep carving.
CHIPS FROM THE PREZ
July is coming on and half a year is gone. The people that take part in what is happening have come back with some great stories- - from the Lincoln City Show in January to the Northwest Carvers Picnic on the 12th of June. I thank the people that made the picnic happen; Richard LaPlante, Dale Goebel, Larry Smart, & Chris
Johnson. Thanks guys!
We had some sad times as well with the passing of our dear friend Oscar Barrett in March.
We will miss him.
We have been invited to return to some of the places where we demon-strated last year. We’re invited July 18 to Carr Cabin Park in Ruston and on Aug 22 to Dupont Old Fort Nisqually. If any of you would like to take part in these affairs, let me know. We have a lot of fun showing off our work and we can also sell stuff if we want to. Also we get to pass out our
show flyers.
I don’t want to forget the Northwest Carving Academy July 11-16 in Ellensburg. If you can
In a letter from John Templar he says “I have tentatively agreed to have woodcarving demos at their next event (Dupont, WA) Sun-day, August 22, 2010 11am-4 pm...anybody want to join me? We'll have 3 tables to fill. Sales are permitted, they will pay for the Dupont business license of $5.” Richard, Loyd, & Bob are going to help out but there’s room for more. An excellent opportunity to
get our advertising out.
More than 5000 years ago this pristine Northwest paradise wel-comed some of the first human inhabitants. It has entertained fur traders and a munitions plant and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. If you haven’t been to Dupont for years come out, carve awhile, and explore the modern planned community and the
historic sites. Enjoy the stunning view of Puget Sound & Mt. Rainier.

Some Carving Classes
All of you caricature carvers-- you will want to look at the 2009 CCA National Caricature Carving Competition Winners Gallery. Great work here. You can click on the image to get a larger view.

I understand that everyone at the Summit Library is chip carving. An excellent source for ideas is at mychipcarving.com where you can also sign up for the e-letter. There are a couple of interesting videos this month. One on monograms
and one on using a lettering & line guide. There are also free patterns.

Will Hayden has closed his web site so if you have links to it on your computer, it’s time to remove them. Will’s health is not doing very well and he needs to
take it easier for awhile. Our thoughts and our prayers are with him.
Like to watch carving videos? I googled “woodcarving videos” and came up with a YouTube site and then had many, many more videos in the right hand side bar. You can start with this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQm-C7UKbCY (Copy
& Paste this one)
There is some good information at this site covering hints & tips, wood toxicity,
DIY sanding bows, etc. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQm-C7UKbCY
Not all sculptures have to be carved. Steven Backman was featured in this King 5 news video http://cbs5.com/video/[email protected] and on the web-site below. I know you’ve been there before but there are some new pieces now. Steven J. Backman’s creations will be on view in the lobby of 500 Howard Street in San Francisco from June 30 thru September 29, 2010.

Deepwoods Ventures sells carving knives of different styles. They have a good newsletter you can sign up for, and good shop talk pages discussing a variety of subjects, such as heat treating, sharpening compounds, forged or ground steel, and others. Just wondering if you use pear wood for your wood carving? We just took down an orchard in eastern Washington and have over 800 tree trunks ranging in various different sizes, up to about 16 inches in diameter and 3 feet long. We sell these for $20-$50 depending on the size and that includes
delivery.
We are in the process of cutting the trees into cants and blocks. Is that something the club carvers would be interested in? If so I will send you some pictures when we get the wood back. Also we are transporting the wood to Gig Harbor to sell
it.
Thanks, June

No Meeting in June ~~ Picnic HiLites by Vicky Rowe
The only people who were disappointed by the picnic were the grouches – There was absolutely nothing for them
to complain about! The weather was exactly what we ordered – sunny and warm but not hot.
Grillmaster Larry Smart delivered excellent burgers and dogs and all the fixin’s were there for the taking. If you
didn’t find what you wanted, you just didn’t look in the right place!
The aspiring woodburners set up inside where Paul Langston taught us a few things about burning a bird on a branch.. or at least a picture of one. I think some of us were surprised by how well we all did. The skunk carvers, led by Richard LaPlant, settled under the canopies and made some very cute little critters. Judging from the laugh-
ter I’d have to say they had a great time.
There was plenty of opportunity to work on your current project or just sit back and relax with good company. The new club patches were selling like I-Pods and a few copies of the Show prospectus were available for proof-
reading.
We had a very good selection of items in the raffle, including several items handcrafted by club members. Proceeds of the raffle were $238 if I remember correctly - I was too busy admiring my new used scroll saw to pay much at-tention. We also had 4 items auctioned - one of Bob Harkness’ ducks, one of Dale Goebel’s scrolled crosses, and
two sets of carving tools. With only a little pressure from Auctioneer Dale the auction netted $82.
It takes a lot of work by a lot of people to pull off such a successful event – our thanks to all for the planning, the
food, the donations, the setting up, the taking down, and all the other contributions to a very satisfying day.
