They are the tiny handheld gadgets sweeping classrooms across the country, but fidget spinners have teachers (including ours) and health experts worried they are disrupting children’s learning. Youngsters globally are rushing to buy the latest craze — primarily developed for autistic children and people who have trouble focusing or fidgeting by acting as a stress-relieving device.

It is the number one selling toy online.

However, more and more reports are suggesting that the devices are doing the exact opposite of what they were originally designed for. These are some links from around the world that all tell the same tale:

From the Headmaster Continued… Many schools are not developing a school policy just yet, some are developing ways of setting up an expectation of how and where the gadget is used. For us however, teachers would already have a good idea of the boys that it may benefit but also have to function around having 25 or so boys in the classroom. Anecdotal evidence from a number of staff is that the spinners are quite disruptive, and that from a practical perspective it is difficult to allow them for some boys and not others. Therefore, from 19 May, fidget spinners are banned at Northwood. This is due to the noise, distraction and disruption to learning that they may cause. Let us rather focus on teaching and learning! PARKTOWN HOSTING AND COMPULSORY ARRANGEMENTS Thank you once more to those who have assisted in the hosting of our Johannesburg visitors this coming weekend. We look forward to competitive fixtures, played between two proud schools. Please note the following for Saturday 20 May: Grade 10 boys are to report to the hockey astro at 09h30 for the 1st XI match – registration will be taken. Grade 8-12 boys must report to the covered stands at 11h00. Boys will be released shortly after the conclusion of the 1st XV match, at approximately 13h45.

Toastmasters 2017 The annual Toastmasters programme (for Grade 11 only) will commence on Wednesday 26 July in AV1 from 2.30 – 4.30 pm.

Coping with Exam Pressure - Advice for Parents Exam times bring with them varying levels of stress and anxiety for both children and parents. For the children the stress is more direct and obvious. Thoughts like “have I done enough study, could I do more?” “I’m running out of time”. “I’m no good at remembering details” “I hate this subject” and many more run through our children’s minds and often result in high levels of stress. These steps help reduce the stressful impact of exam pressures: When it comes to exam time, there are some steadfast and simple things any parent can do and say to their children:

• Remain calm and relaxed when talking with your child. Children can sense stress in their parents quite easily and do not need this extra burden on them during exam times. Many parents will remember their own feelings associated with exams and need to learn from it. Be supportive. • Parents need to reduce their own stress levels associated with their children’s exam times, so focus on what works best for you in this regard. Perhaps go for a walk, play a sport or any activity that can release nervous tension and distract the mind. • Depending on your child’s levels of organisation, it might be helpful to go through their study plan, helping them to break up their work into manageable pieces and making sure they schedule enough social time for a healthy balance. • Keep an eye out for changes in behaviour. As parents we should look to see how our children are responding to, and managing, their stress levels. If there are any notable changes in how they behave then have a chat and ask them how you can help. This simple act may be enough in itself, as your child will feel listened to and supported. • Ensure your child is eating normally. Often exam pressures mean your child eats snack foods and misses out on a nutritious and balanced diet. • Children often want to study late and for longer hours (cramming) which eats into sleeping time. It is very important that children have a sufficient amount of sleep so they can function normally. Proper levels of sleep aid the memory process and make children less cranky. • Keep it real. Exams like the Junior and Leaving cert are not the ‘be all and end all’ of your child’s life. We are more defined by how we act and respond to life events than by the score we achieve on a test. There are always options out there. • Try not to make too many demands on your child at this time as any ensuing arguments will be entirely counterproductive. That said, children still have responsibilities they need to maintain. • Most of all, make sure your child knows you are there to support them unconditionally regardless of the exam results.

From the Head of Extramurals Mr G. Le Roux gleroux@nwood.co.za Deputy Headmaster – Extramurals Yesterday evening we were made aware of a really incredible achievement by one of our boys. Andile Mokgakane has been selected as part of a 15 man squad for the South African u19 Cricket Team to take on the 2016 ICC U19 World Cup Winners, West Indies, in a five match series from the 9-19 July here in Durban and Pietermaritzburg. This really is an amazing achievement. We are incredibly proud of you Andile. This, together with Alvin Chiradza and Daniel Zvidzai, being selected for the Zimbabwe u19 Cricket team, brings the total to 3 boys selected for their National Team this year. Well done, gentlemen. Parktown arrive tomorrow with a number of early fixtures. Chess and Tennis will start as soon as Parktown arrive, so we would be looking at a time between 14h30 and 15h00. Squash will start at 17h00 at Crusaders. There are also a number of Hockey and Rugby matches taking place on Friday afternoon. Billeting for these boys will be done at the conclusion of each of these matches. The bulk of the billeting should take place between 16h00-16h30 at the main grand stand, so please meet at the main stands at 16h00. A reminder about the compulsory attendance fixture this weekend: Grade 10 Seated at Astro at 09h15 Grade 8-12 Seated at Main Grandstand at 11h00. Parents can collect boys from 14h00. Good luck to all learners involved in this weekends fixture and also a massive THANK YOU to all parents who have put their hands up to host boys for Friday night.

RESULTS: FROM MONDAY 15 MAY The 1st Team narrowly lost to Glenwood 8 - 9. Nathan Hill won his match 3 - 1. Nick Wright had a very close match but lost 2 - 3. Ethan Klebe also played the full 5 games which he won 3 - 2 after an epic battle!

The 2nd Team also played Glenwood and had a convincing win. Jason Kent and Nasser Cassim both winning 3 – 0. Overall result 12 – 0.

The 3rd Team took on Westville and had some major competition to contend with. Unfortunately they were just too strong and we lost the fixture 0 – 12. Better luck next time.

The 4th Team travelled to Rovers to play Clifton. Although Mitchell Kruger and Russell Littleton both won their matches 3 - 1 and 3 – 0 respectively, we lost the overall fixture 6 – 7. A well - fought set of results.
