The lenses were scratched, the hinges were loose, and they canted about 3 degrees off level across the bridge of my nose. I get very few perks in my position here at THUNDER PRESS, so I try to take advantage of the oppor- tunities I have. In this case, a quick e-mail to Bev, one of our ace sales reps, resulted in a spanking new pair of Panoptx Raptor CV Limited Edition glasses landing on my desk. (There, don’t you wish you had my job? Don’t be too jealous—so far it hasn’t worked for anything bigger than a breadbox.) The Raptor CV is Panoptx’s top-of-the-line model, and it retails for a pretty penny. They’re “Limited Editions” because they’ve got this cool flame design on the temples, and I understand they’ll also be offering other graphics that appeal to the biker aesthetic. Pretty good for swag, but would I person- ally shell out almost 200 smackers for a pair of riding glasses? Frankly, I’m finding my eyes less useful with each passing year, though I guess they’re still worth protecting. (For those with eyes even less use- ful than mine, prescription lenses are available for all Panoptx glas- ses. Even bifocals. It bumps up the price substantially.) My first impression when I opened the box and picked the Raptors up was how light they are. I think my usual glasses may actu- ally weigh more. The ear pieces are adjustable, with about a half inch of movement to accommodate your ears’ position fore and aft on your skull. My Raptors are equipped with day/night (or photochromic) lenses that automatically adjust their tint in response to sunlight. When exposed to the UV wavelengths of Sol’s rays, the lenses get darker. After sundown or indoors, they fade to clear, with a very slight yellow tint that improves contrast. This makes them pretty much useless at the poker table, but if your ride is likely to last from midday past twilight, or you’re run- ning under overcast skies, you won’t need to stop and reconfigure your face. Other lens options are avail- able, but Panoptx says the day/night lenses are the most popular among their riding clientele. The trade-off is that it makes the glasses less use- ful behind a face shield or for driv- ing the chase truck—if less UV light is hitting them, the lenses don’t darken as much.
