Intersectionality & TraumaRestoring, Reclaiming and Resourcing Traumatized Communities

A training workshop in Trauma-Informed Community-Based Care, over MLK weekend, will be held at All Saints Church, and involve an immersion into understanding the psychological impact of the Maafa - “the great disaster and destruction” of the transatlantic enslavement trade of people of African descent in America. This immersion, and in-depth trauma training will offer participants several things, including:

-an exploration of collective and historical trauma as manifested in the Maafa and its societal aftermaths

-an opportunity to learn about the cultural worldviews which underlie the historical harms committed during the Maafa

-the ability to have a more sophisticated analysis of how contemporary racial and cultural dynamics are rooted in the collective trauma of the Maafa, including but not limited to an understanding of personality within an African-centered cultural perspective

-the space to consider how to apply the content training to the participants’ communities, with a special consideration for equipping participants to support and engage in the All Saints Trauma-Informed Community Based Care Project of Northwest Pasadena.

The training will be led by clinical psychologists Dr. Brinell Anderson and the Rev. Dr. Sally Howard, and will be geared for an age range which includes high-school aged youth through persons of older adulthood. Recognizing the often unintentional emotional harm which can occur when discussing a topic of this nature, the training will be intentional about creating spaces of safety for persons of African-descent by remaining sensitive to the complexity of thoughts and feelings which are often evoked when exploring the impact of the Maafa. Our hope is for each participant to leave the training with a transformational experience which can be taken back into their personal, family, work, and community lives.

Join us in this exciting journey of radical liberation and courageous justice, that will equip us to be even greater agents of healing in our world.

Fees range from $60-$120, depending on ability to pay. Scholarships are available. Register at: https://allsaints-pas.org/sign-up-center/. For more information contact Ana Camacho, 626.583.2737 or [email protected]. All Saints Church is at 132 N. Euclid Avenue, Pasadena 91101, directly across Euclid from Pasadena City Hall.
