Messages from the Headteacher
Dear Parent/Carers
Easter Mass - As always, it was wonderful to finish a long and busy term with our Easter masses in preparation for Holy
Week. Thank you to Fr Pat and everyone who worked behind the scenes to make the masses so special.. Today we also
had our whole school “Walk for Water” tutor group relay event. There was great excitement on the tennis courts as
tutor groups tried to win the relay event carrying buckets of water. Each tutor group paid £5 to enter and great fun was
had by all.
Lenten Charities - Many thanks to all the students, staff and parents for their support during Lent for our fundraising
events. The totals are not yet in but we finished the term with the “Walk for Water“ event and a Sixth Form Dress
Down day. I will let you know the final amounts after the holiday. We have also collected over 500 Easter eggs that will
all be much enjoyed by disadvantaged children in Coventry at Easter.
Easter School - Revision sessions are being offered by staff over the Easter holiday and students are encouraged to take
advantage of these to support their revision for the external exams starting on 15 May. Thank you to the many teachers
prepared to give up their holidays to continue to support students in every way they can. A list of revision sessions can
be found on page 4 of this newsletter and details are also available on the website
Uniform - As always many thanks to all the parents and carers who have ensured that students are wearing the correct
school uniform - we really appreciate your support and we are very proud of how smart our students look. A reminder
that during the summer term the school jumper is optional but students must wear their blazers and ties at all times.
Please also ensure that students are wearing the correct school shoes and a reminder that jewellery and nail varnish are
not allowed. After Easter all students need to come to school ready to learn with a proper school bag as well as pens,
pencil, ruler, rubber and calculator.
Football Success - Inspired by Coventry City’s win on Sunday in the Checkatrade Trophy a massive well done to our
Year 7 and Year 10 football teams who both won their cup games this week to make it to the finals after Easter.
Cycling to School - A reminder that after Easter students who cycle to school must wear a helmet.
Staff Leaving Today - Today we say goodbye to Mr Matthews (Music) and Mrs Ansell (Science). Mr Matthews will be
returning every Wednesday to support his Year 11 students up until they sit their exam.
We wish them both every success and happiness in their new posts and thank them for their hard work and commitment
over the last few years.
As we come to the end of a very busy Spring Term at Cardinal Newman I would like to thank all our parents and carers
for their tremendous support – it is much appreciated. I hope you all have a very happy and peaceful Easter.
Best wishes, Mrs Marina Kelly, Headteacher

STEM Day
This week, Cardinal Newman welcomed back the Smallpeice Trust to lead a STEM Day (Science, Technology,
Engineering and Maths) for a group of Year 9 students. This gave the students an opportunity to work
together in teams to solve an engineering challenge they were presented with. Their main task for the day
was to design and build a water treatment device that was able to filter particles of debris, store the water
in a container then pump it out when needed. The range of approaches to solving the challenge was impres-
sive as was the level of creativity in how to tackle these problems. For most teams the toughest part was
managing the leaks that develop when working on what is in large measure a plumbing challenge, but
particular credit must go to the winning team who successfully produced one able to carry out the task
without having water dripping from it. It is hoped that some of those who took part will opt to take their
work further by pursuing a place on one of the university based courses the Trust run during the summer.

Year 10 Football - Coventry Schools’ Cup
Cardinal Newman vs Ernesford Grange
On 28 March Newman cruised into the semi final of the Coventry Schools’ Cup with an emphatic win over Ernesford Grange.
First half goals from Tim Yonas, Owen Wassall, T J Lilley and two from Daniel Lafferty put Newman 5-0 up.
After the break two more goals for T J Lilley saw him complete his hat trick and four goals from Daniel Lafferty saw him
complete a double hat trick. Ernesford did score a goal from the penalty spot as Newman won 11-1.
Newman went on to face Bishop Ullathorne in the semi final.
Cardinal Newman vs Bishop Ullathorne
Ullathorne started the match brightly and deservedly took an early lead. This seemed to wake Newman up and goals from Daniel Lafferty and
Tresor Rudasingwa put Newman 2-1 up. However, Ullathorne pulled a goal back to see the teams go in 2-2 at the break.
Newman started the second half superbly and two quick fire goals from Tresor Rudasingwa saw him complete his hat trick and put Newman 4-2 up.
It stayed this way until a frantic last 10 minutes when Ullathorne levelled the score with two quick goals, seemingly sending the match into extra
time. However, with two minutes to go, Newman broke and Daniel Lafferty fired home and put Newman in the final with a 5-4 victory.
The final takes place on 25 April at Coventry Sporting FC.
Mr R Campbell, Team Manager
Year 7 Football
On Wednesday afternoon the Year 7 football team won their match
against Caludon Castle to reach the final of the Coventry Schools’ Cup in
their first year. A dominant display from Newman was rewarded with a
goal from Antonio Cristofaro. Caludon Castle played better in the
second half and equalised towards the end.
The match went to penalties and a miss followed by a save from Zach
Hedge meant that victory went to Newman.
The final will be on Tuesday 25th. Good luck in the final Year 7.
Mr S Gray, PE Faculty
Year 8 Netball
The Coventry Schools’ league was as close as ever this
year in the under 13's category. Year 8 just missed out
on winning the league, with only goal difference splitting
1st and 2nd place.
All other year groups did fantastically and we are currently awaiting
the official results from those leagues. Well done for your
commitment this year, next stop... rounders!

Lenten Fundraising
It has been a very busy half term
here at Cardinal Newman
School and even now we are
still holding charity events
on the very last day to try
and raise as much as possi-
ble for our chosen
charities.
Students have responded to pleas for Non Uniform Day, 50p
challenges, Cake Sales, 20p Smarties Tubes, Sponsored spells,
silences and walks, chocolate raffles and Easter Eggs, money is still
coming in and today we will be having our 'Walk for Water' relay!
Once again we would like to thank all of our students, parents and
staff for their generous support of all of our activities over the last
four weeks and look forward to being able to share all of the totals
with you in the first newsletter after Easter.
Miss C Keane, Fundraising Co-ordinator
Newman Fact of the Week
In 1879, Pope Leo XIII made John Henry Newman a Cardinal in
tribute to his extraordinary work and devotion. At his death in
1890, it was said that he had done more than any other person
to change the attitude of non-Catholics to Catholics.
Easter Prayer
Lord of life
We pray for all who bring your word of life
As a light to those in darkness
For those who bring your word of peace
To those enslaved by fear
For those who bring your word of love
To those in need of comfort
Lord of love and Lord of peace
Lord of resurrection life
Be known
Through our lives
and through your power
Christ the Lord is risen to-day
Alleluia!
Musical Excellence
Congratulations to Caelan Corkery who has
had a busy ‘performing’ half term. After a very
successful lead role in the school musical she
received a stunning Classical Guitar Grade 2 result of
92% graded at a Distinction.
Well done Caelan!
