Notes and News IMPERIAL CANCER RESEARCH FUND ON June 11 the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visited the new laboratories of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in Lincoln’s Inn Fields. The E2’5 million spent on the site, the building, and the equipment has come entirely from voluntary contributions; and, each year, over £600,000 will have to be found from the same source for maintaining research staff, equipment, and services in Lincoln’s Inn Fields and at Mill Hill. The Fund’s laboratories are under the general direction of Dr. G. F. Marrian. THE RICHMOND FELLOWSHIP THE mentally ill occupy as many as half the hospital beds in this country; but, for every patient being treated in hospital, there must be a dozen outside not ill enough for admission but badly in need of help. To offer that help is -the aim of the Richmond Fellowship. The Fellowship was started in 1959 to provide homes where the lonely and those threatened with mental breakdown could find security in a strong community life. It now runs two such homes, and a third was opened at South Darenth on June 15. The staff of each includes some trained in psychiatry and social work; but the atmosphere is one of a family at home rather than of nursed and nursing in hospital. Some patients stay for as long as ten months, while others join the com- munity daily or at weekends; throughout, their links with family and friends outside are carefully maintained. At the end of their residence they are helped to find employment. Of the 200 or so who have been assisted by the Fellowship so far, most have managed to hold down a regular job since their return to normal life and have shown greater general stability. Apparently, therefore, community therapy as practised in the homes is effective in re-equipping patients for the business of living. The Fellowship is an independent charitable company; and, although it charges fees for residence to cover the running costs of its homes, at least E30.000 is needed for the mainten- ance and extension of its work. Its headquarters are at Dunbridge House, 2 Wells Road, Bickley, Kent. University of Oxford On June 8 the degree of D.M. was conferred on D. R. Oppenheimer, W. E. Ormerod, and Geoffrey Rushworth. University of London Mr. S. G. Clayton, director of the department of obstetrics and gynaecology at King’s College Hospital Medical School, has been appointed to the chair of obstetrics and gynaecology at the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynxcology. Mr. Clayton, who is 52 years of age, was educated at Kingswood School. He qualified M.B. from King’s College Hospital, London, in 1934. He took the F.R.C.S. in 1936, and M.R.C.O.G. in 1939; and he graduated M.D. in 1941, and M.S. in 1942. He was elected F.R.C.O.G. in 1951. He was appointed to the consultant staff of Queen Char- lotte’s Hospital and the Chelsea Hospital for Women in 1946 and of King’s College Hospital in 1947. He is the editor of the Journal of Obstetrics and Gyncecology of the British Commonwealth and the Queen Charlotte’s Text-book, and his own published work includes contributions to Ten Teachers’ Midwifery and Diseases of Women and to Rose & Carless’s Surgery. Dr. C. W. M. Adams has been appointed reader in experi- mental pathology at Guy’s Hospital Medical School, and Dr. Ian Macdonald reader in physiology at the school.
