XXI Olympic Winter Games

The XXI Olympic Winter Games took place from February 12 to February 28, 2010,in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The four se­tenant strip shows variousolympic winter sports: freestyle skiing, cross country skiing, luge and biathalon.

Taras Shevchenko

Famous Ukrainian writer and artist Taras Shevchenko has a souvenir sheet issued in his honor, featuring two ofhis paintings. The 2hr stamp on the left features his self­portrait. The 1.5hr stamp on the right shows hispainting Kazashka.

Constitution of Pylyp Orlyk

The Constitution of Pylyp Orlyk was a 1710 constitutional document writ­ten by Hetman Pylyp Orlyk. It established a democratic standard for theseparation of powers in government between the legislative, executive,and judiciary branches, well before the publication of Montesquieu'sSpirit of the Laws. The Constitution also limited the executive authority ofthe Hetman, and established a democratically elected Cossack parlia­ment called the General Council. Pylyp Orlyk's Constitution was uniquefor its historic period, and was one of the first state constitutions inEurope.

World War II Victory

To commemorate the 65th an­niversary of the end of World WarII, Ukraine issued a stamp withYevdokiya Zavaliy on it. Whenthis 17­year­old WWII nurse wasmistaken for a man on the field,she didn't protest. Instead, shefought in several battles and wasappointed as the leader of a re­connaissance squad. Even afterbeing wounded four times andher gender was discovered, herplatoon continued to fight. Shereceived more than 40 medals ofHonor for her act of valor. TheNazis gave her the nickname"Frau Black Death".

Europa ­ Children's Books

The 2010 Europa theme was "Children's Books." Ukraineissued a se­tenant pair featuring the children's story "TheMare's Head" on the left and "The Golden Shoe" on theright.

Nikolay Pirogov

Nikolay Pirogov was a prominentRussian scientist, doctor, pedagogue,public figure, and correspondingmember of the Russian Academy ofSciences. He is considered to be thefounder of field surgery, and was oneof the first surgeons in Europe to useether as an anaesthetic.

Ukraine issued 2 souvenirsheets to commemoratethe 90th anniversary ofthe Ukrainian NationalRepublic's stamps.The first sheet has thefollowing stamps on it: topleft ­ the 1 hryven tridentstamp, top right ­ the 2hryven allegorical Ukrainestamp, bottom left ­ the 10hryven stamp of BohdanKhmelnytski, bottom right­ the 15 hryven stamp ofIvan Mazepa.

The second sheet has thefollowing stamps on it:top left ­ the 20 hryvenstamp of TarasShevchenko, top right ­the 30 hryven stamp ofPavlo Polubotok, bottomleft ­ the 40 hryven stampof Simon Petrula, bottomright­ the 50 hryven stampof a kobzar.

Klitschko Brothers

Vitali Klitschko and Wladimir Klitschko,collectively known as The Klitschkobrothers are Ukrainian heavyweightboxers. Both brothers made theirprofessional debut on November 6,1996 in Hamburg. Since then bothhave been heavyweight worldchampions in boxing.

Flowers Vanity Stamp

This vanity stamp has pictures of flowers on it and has adenominational value of "V". Like all vanity stamps, a labelis included on tthe right hand side where customers canhave a custom label printed.

Locomotives

The DE1 is an electric locomotive that was designed in the 1990s to replace the VL8. The DC3 is anelectric locomotive design for both passenger and commercial use. The TEP150 (lower­left) is anelectric passanger locomotive originally manufactured in 1974. The TEM103 (lower­right) is a dieselshunting locomotive first manufactured in 2005.

Johann Georg Pinzel

Johann Georg Pinzel was a German sculptor and engraverwho lived in Galacia, Ukraine. He was most active from1750­1761, and is known for his sculptures in and aroundchurches. This se­tenant pair shows two of his works, astatue of an angel on the left, and a statue of the VirginMary on the right.

Alexander Potebnya

Alexander Potebnya was a Ukrainianlinguist, philosopher, folklorist, andethnographer. He taught at theKharkiv Poletechnic Institute

Cossack Rebellions

Krzysztof Kosinski was a Polish noble of Ukrainian origin from thePodlaskie region. He was a colonel of the Registered Cossacks andself­proclaimed Hetman of Ukraine.Bohdan Mykoshynskyi was a Cossack leader, that was elected 3 timesby the Cossacks to be Hetman.Both Hetmans participated in two consecutive rebellions against localUkrainian nobility, known as the Kosinski Uprising.

Pavlo Polubotok

Pavlo Polubotok was a Cossackpolitical and military leader and ActingHetman of the Left­bank Ukrainebetween 1722 and 1724. As Hetman,Polubotok supported greater autonomyfor Cossack Hetmante within theRussian Empire and defended oldprivileges of Cossack nobility.

Kiev Metro

The Kiev Metro is a metro system that is the mainstay of Kiev's public transport. It was the first rapid transit system inUkraine. It now has three lines with a total length of 66.1 kilometres and 51 stations.

Kharkiv Polytechnic InstituteKharkiv Polytechnic Insti­tute is the largest andoldest technical universityin eastern Ukraine. It wasfounded in 1885. Lighthouses

Sanzijka Lighthouse is located in Ilichevsk, Ukraine, near Odessa. Tendrivska Westis is located in Kherson Oblast. Tarkhankut Light stands atthe western corner of the diamond­shaped Crimean peninsula known as Devil's Cape. Pavlovski Front is located in the Zaporizha Oblast,along the Sea of Azov. Ilichevsk South Mole marks the entrance to an estuary that forms the harbor of Ilichevsk, an industrial town about 15km (9 mi) south of Odessa. Khersonesskiy Lighthouse stands on the southwest corner of the Crimean peninsula.

Holy Mountain National Park

Holy Mountain National Park was created in 1997 by presidential decree. It is located inthe northern part of the Donetsk oblast in western Ukraine. The four stamps show thefollowing native wildlife: The Southern Festoon (upper left), the Bluebird (upper right),the European Otter (lower left), and the Mud Turtle (lower right).

European Convention onHuman Rights

The European Convention on HumanRights is an international treaty to pro­tect human rights and fundamentalfreedoms in Europe. Drafted in 1950,the convention entered into force on 3September 1953. This stamp com­memorates it's 60th anniversary.

Minerals

This souvenir sheet of stamps highligting the various minerals found in Ukraine. Shows on the sheet are:Syngenite (top­left), Carpathite (top­center), Amber (top­right), Agate (bottom­right), Labradorite (bottom­middle),and Rodonite (bottom­left).
