He received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in philosophy. He co-authored the first OR textbook, Introduction to Operations Research and has contin- ued to write books that deal with the philosophy of science and ethics, systems approach and inquiring systems. He serves as consultant to private industry and government agencies. Two of his current books, Challenge to Reason and The Systems Approach as well as an article which appeared in The Accounting Review have received awards. His research interests are earth resource management, educational policy and urban management as well as a continuing interest in the philosophy of the systems approach. While working as a senior design engineer, OR Analyst, and senior systems analyst tbr 9 years with Texas Instruments Inc., he pursued a Ph.D. degree in Management Science at North Texas State University; graduating in 1972. He has published numerous articles in the area of production line balancing, use and applica- tion of simulation and gaming, and in the simulation of industrial systems. His current area of research is in the application of simulation within risk management. KEILN, David, is Senior Economist at the National Westminster Bank, London. He took a BA degree in Economics at the Hebrew University and an M.Sc.(Econ.) degree at the London School of Economics. LANSLEY, Peter, graduated from Leicester University with an Honours degree in Mathematics and then obtained a Masters degree in Statistics from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. Prior to joining Ashridge, he worked as a statistician for the Agri- cultural Research Council, advising on the design of large scale animal and crop production experiments and on the economics of modern methods of crop conservation. His work at Ashridge involves research into a wide variety of problems facing medium sized construction firms and into the methods of measuring employee morale. LETHBRIDGE, David, is a Fellow of the Oxford Centre for Management Studies and is responsible for the B.Phil. in Management Studies Programme, and is also Director of the Senior Executives Programme. His academic qualifications were obtained at the Universities of Bristol and London and at the University of Oxford, where he previously taught in the Department of Engineering Science. Prior to that he was with Schlumberger Overseas S.A., working with major oil companies in the development of new oil fields. His current research is concerned with quantitative and qualitative aspects of managerial decision making. LUSK, Edward J, is an Assistant Professor at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania He holds a joint appointment in the Accounting and Health Care Systems Departments. MONETTE, Jean, has obtained his electrical engineering degree at Ecole Polytechnique de Montrral and a diploma in Management Sciences at McGill University in the same city. SADLER, Philip, graduated from the London School of Economics in 1953 with an Honours degree in Sociology. After a brief spell in advertising he joined the Civil Service to work in personnel research with the Royal Air Force and was subsequently seconded to the National Economic Development Office to advise on sociological factors affecting economic growth. In 1964 he joined the staff of Ashridge as Director of Research and was appointed Principal in January, 1969. Publications include (with B. A. SADLER, PG, was Senior Lecturer and Director of the Economic Research Unit at the University College of North Wales, Bangor. SARNOFF, Robert W, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of the RCA Corporation has had a career of more than 30 years in the information and communi- cations industries. He heads a corporation with gross annual sales totaling almost $4 billion, and with major manufacturing, marketing and research activities in 22 countries throughout the world. He became President and Chief Operating Officer of RCA in 1966, Chief Execu- tive Officer in 1968, and Chairman of the Board two years later. Under Mr. Sarnoff's direction, RCA has strengthened its base in electronics and communications and has entered several new consumer oriented businesses. Among the companies acquired by RCA during Mr. Sarnoff's tenure have been Random House, The Hertz Corporation, Banquet Foods, Cushman & Wakefield, and Coronet Industries. Before moving to the parent com- pany, Mr. Sarnoff spent a decade as Chief Executive Officer of NBC, first as President and then as Chairman of the Board. He has earned many special honors and awards from universities and professional societies as well as from governments, including a decoration as an Officer of the French Order of Arts and Letters by the Government of France (1966), as Commander of the Order of Merit by the Italian Government (1968), La Grande Medal of Vermeil by the City of Paris, France (1970), and the Order of the Crown Medal, the highest award given to non-citizens in Belgium. He is a director of numerous business organizations, including the New York Stock Exchange, Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company, and American Home Products, Inc. WABE, J Stuart, is a principal research fellow in the Centre for Industrial Economic and Business Research at the University of Warwick. He joined the Centre in September 1971 as the Director of the Manpower Planning Unit. He graduated from Birmingham University in 1963 and was awarded the D.Phil. degree by Oxford University in 1967. Before joining the Centre he was a lecturer in Economics at the University of Warwick for three years and served as a consultant for two years with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation. WEBB, Terry, graduated from Loughborough University in 1969 with a first class Honours degree in Humanities and Technology. He first joined the Ashridge staff in July 1970 as an Assistant then as Research Officer, and has since completed a master's degree at Loughborough in Social Science Utilisation. He is currently studying the managerial and organisational problems of change in small and medium sized firms which form three groups of printing companies. ~,~JLSON, Charles J, received his Ph.D. in Business Administration from The Pennsyl- vania State University in 1973. He also holds an MBA from St. John's University as well as a Master of Science and Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn and The Pennsylvania State University, respectively. His doctoral research was concerned with the application of information theoretic concepts to the study of security risk and portfolio selection and revision. ZEIRA, Yoram, is a faculty member, Graduate School of Business Administration, Tel-Aviv University. He received his M.A. from the University of California, at Berkeley, and his Ph.D. from New York University. Since 1967, he has been responsible for several management development and planned organizational change efforts in Israel and the U.S.A. and has published a number of articles on this theme. He is currently conducting two com- parative studies: the first deals with the patterns of management development in the public administration in Israel; the second is concerned with topics of morale and planned organizational change in monocentric-multinational corporations.
