Welcome Breakfast This Wednesday 13 February, from 8am, Hamilton South Public School is hosting a Welcome to 2019 Breakfast. This is an important event on the school calendar as it is an opportunity for students, staff, parents and carers to come together in an informal setting to meet and catch up and enjoy breakfast. To cover costs we ask for a gold coin donation (per person). The monies raised go to put more outdoor seating around the grounds. The Welcome Breakfast is very much a team effort. The canteen runs the BBQ and put together the muesli cups and help make pancakes, the staff provide the fruit and the P&C provide pancakes. Available that morning will be: Sausage on a roll (Vegetarian & Gluten Free available - please notify prior) Fruit Pancakes (Gluten free option) Muesli and Berry Compote cups Purchase Hot drinks from the Coffee Cart Helping with School Events in 2019 To support our regular helpers, especially the canteen and P&C at school events; we have allocated a Year or Stage group to help with these during the year. The Welcome Breakfast is our first school event and we are asking if our Year 3 parents and carers can help out with this breakfast. This would involve helping on the BBQ, preparing food in the canteen and serving during the morning. It is a great way to meet up with other Year 3 parents. The more people we have we can share the load and have people rostered on and off. Please contact Mary or Sam if you can help. A list of school events throughout 2019 where assistance from our school community would be appreciated will be published in next week’s Noticeboard. At the start of each year we hold information nights to provide parents and carers about class and

school routines and teacher expectations. The sessions are an opportunity to hear from class

teachers about the activities and programs planned for the year.

Information Sessions are as followed:

Term 1 Parent Teacher Interviews (different to Parent Information Night) From feedback received from the phone survey that we conducted last year on Reporting Students’ Progress to Parents, the Term 1 Parent Teacher interviews will be held earlier this year. Parent teacher interviews will be held in Week 6 (4 – 7March). The Interviews allow parents and teachers to discuss how students have settled into their new class and how they are mixing socially with others. This also provides parents an opportunity to share information about your child. All interviews will be held in classrooms and will be 10 minutes in duration. Class teachers will provide a range of interview times/days.

The main interview days will be: Monday 4 March - Stage 1 Tuesday 5 March - Stage 2 Wednesday 6 March - Stage 3 Thursday 7 March - Early Stage 1

Booking an Interview Interview times will be made available for booking online from 8am Saturday 23 February and close on Thursday 28 February at 3.30pm. Parents will need to log on http://www.schoolinterviews.com.au to book interview times with their class teacher.

Updating Student/Family Details

Notes At the start of the year we send home a number of notes that need to completed and/or updated. These are required to be filled in and returned to school as soon as possible so our records can be updated. Permission Note (Purple) This note covers permission for Online Communication Services and acceptable usage for school students. Please return this note to your child’s teacher. Permission Note (Yellow) This note covers permission to publish student’s photo/video/work/recording online. Please return to your child’s teacher. Emergency Contacts (White) It is very important that we have current contact details, especially phone numbers. It is quite amazing how quickly phone numbers etc. can change. Please return to admin office. General Excursion Note (Green) This note covers permission for students to participate in sporting and cultural activities at local venues within walking distance. This note will be sent home this week and needs to be returned to your child’s teacher.

Anaphylaxis

Staff undertake training in Anaphylaxis each year and the Department of Education and Communities (DOE) provides this training. At our school we have a number of students who have been diagnosed as being are Anaphylactic. As we update our records we will be contacting parents of students who are Anaphylactic to update their health care plans. If your child is Anaphylactic it is essential you contact the school to let us know and complete the necessary forms and Health Care Plan.

What is anaphylaxis? Anaphylaxis is a severe and sometimes sudden allergic reaction. It can occur when a susceptible person is exposed to an allergen, such as a food or insect sting. Although death is rare, an anaphylactic reaction always requires an emergency response. Prompt treatment with adrenaline is required to halt progression and can be lifesaving. Fortunately anaphylactic reactions are usually preventable by implementing strategies for avoiding allergens.

Common allergens that can trigger anaphylaxis are:

foods (e.g. peanuts and tree nuts (such as hazelnuts or cashews), shellfish and fish; milk and egg, wheat, sesame and soy)

insect stings (e.g. bee, wasp, jack jumper ants)

medications (e.g. antibiotics, pain relievers)

latex (e.g. rubber gloves, balloons, swimming caps).

This is not, however, an exhaustive list of possible allergens. The severity of an anaphylactic reaction can be influenced by a number of factors including minor illness, asthma, and, in the case of food allergens, the amount eaten. In the case of severe food

Page 4: NOTICEBOARD - hamiltons-p.schools.nsw.gov.au · young musicians in Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6, who are interested in gaining skills in performing and recording in a contemporary

allergies, an anaphylactic reaction is usually triggered by ingestion of the food. Contact skin reactions to an allergen are very unlikely to trigger anaphylaxis. The school can help by assisting the student in the avoidance of allergens through health care planning. The early recognition of the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis may save lives by allowing the earlier administration of emergency care and contact of the appropriate emergency medical services.

All staff need to be aware of students diagnosed at risk of anaphylaxis and the relevant parts of their individual health care plan, including the emergency response for anaphylaxis which is outlined in their ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis, including:

signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis

administration of adrenaline auto injectors

strategies to avoid exposure to known allergens

location of the adrenaline auto-injector.

Who is at risk of anaphylaxis? Students who are highly allergic to any of the above allergens are at risk of anaphylaxis if exposed. Those who have had a previous anaphylactic reaction are at increased risk. How can you recognise an anaphylactic reaction? Reactions usually begin within minutes of exposure and can progress rapidly at any time over a period of two hours. In some cases, anaphylaxis is preceded by signs of a mild to moderate allergic reaction including:

Swelling of face, lips and eyes

Hives or welts on the skin

Tingling mouth

Abdominal pain, vomiting (these are signs of a mild to moderate allergic reaction to most allergens, however, in insect allergy these are signs of anaphylaxis).

Mild to moderate allergic reactions (such as hives or swelling) may not always occur before Anaphylaxis.

A severe allergic reaction is indicated by any one of the following:

Difficult/noisy breathing

Swelling of tongue

Swelling/tightness in throat

Difficulty talking and/or hoarse voice

Wheeze or persistent cough

Persistent dizziness or collapse

Pale and floppy (in young children)

Infectious Diseases It is important if your child has an infectious disease e.g. German Measles, Measles, Chicken Pox, Mumps etc. that you let the school know.

STUDENT EMERGENCY INFORMATION SHEET

A new student emergency information form has been sent home to students in Years 1-6. In an emergency a copy of this form will be sent with your child to hospital. As these are in a paper form and used regularly (looking up phone numbers when students are sick/injured) they do deteriorate, so each year it is necessary to have a new one completed, signed and dated.

STAGE LEVY & SCHOOL CONTRIBUTION

Stage levies for 2019 have been set at $100 per student per year. Voluntary School Contribution remains at $40 per student per year. Statements will be sent home this week.

GLASS DRINK BOTTLES

Please do not send a glass drink bottle with your child to school.

Student Banking

Student banking is on Friday each week.

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST FORMS FOR ROCKON and CHOIR

On Tuesday Expressions of Interest Forms will be coming home outlining the two very exciting Extra Curricular programs that will be available to students at Hamilton South Public School. These Expressions of Interest are being sent home to gauge the number of interested students and therefore the viability of them as a program that we can offer at HSPS.

If your child is interested in joining either of the ensembles they need to return the Expression of Interest Form for the activity they would like to participate in to Mrs Bell no later than Friday February 15. Please note that there will be Band/Choir fee involved. The cost for each will be outlined on the Expression of Interest Forms.

Expressions of Interest: RockOn 2019

After the 2018 success of RockOn at Hamilton South Public School, Newcastle Conservatorium will be again offering this exciting new music program. The program is an excellent opportunity for young musicians in Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6, who are interested in gaining skills in performing and recording in a contemporary music ensemble.

If your child plays the electric guitar, bass guitar, sings, plays keyboard or plays the drum kit - this is the perfect ensemble for them. Additionally, the HSPS “RockOn” ensemble will record pieces at the University of Newcastle studios and be involved in performance opportunities at Hamilton South Public School.

Rehearsal details: RockOn Students will rehearse every week (Start date TBA) at school on Tuesday afternoons from 3:00pm - 4:00pm.

Expressions of Interest: Choir 2019

The Newcastle University Conservatorium of Music will be offering an exciting new Choir program at Hamilton South Public School. The program is an excellent opportunity for young musicians in Year 2, Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6, who are interested in gaining singing and performance skills as part of our new choir program.

If your child loves to sing then this is the group for them! Students will be involved in performance opportunities at Hamilton South Public School and with the Conservatorium of Music.

Rehearsal details: Choir Students will rehearse every week during school hours.

MultiLit Reading Program 2019

We are looking for people who are interested in helping implement a MultiLit (Making up lost time in Literacy) reading program for years 2-6. The program assists students one on one who need extra intervention to improve their reading skills. The program will run on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings for approximately an hour and a half (9:00-10:30am).

Page 8: NOTICEBOARD - hamiltons-p.schools.nsw.gov.au · young musicians in Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6, who are interested in gaining skills in performing and recording in a contemporary

Mrs Walsh will train anyone interested on how to implement the program in your available time in week 4 and the program will commence in week 5. Your help would be invaluable to the success of this reading program. If you can assist on any of these mornings on a regular basis, please email [email protected] including which day suits you best and a contact number by Monday 18 February. You don’t have to be a parent to help. Grandparents, retired friends/teachers, university students or anyone who would like to feel helpful are welcome. Please let anyone that you think would be interested know about this program. Thank you for your assistance in this matter and we hope to hear from you soon.

BAND HAPPENINGS

And we are up and running! Concert Band had their first rehearsal last week with our new conductors Paul and Zac Isaacs (Just in case you're wondering, Yes they are twins!). It was amazing to hear that even on our very first rehearsal, we were already playing repertoire. Just WOW team!! I am so excited for the year ahead.

By now most of you have contacted your tutors and some students have even had their first lessons already. Remember lessons and payments are a bit different this year. You need to have completed and returned the University of Newcastle Conservatorium of Music Enrolment Form and returned this to me at school. If you have not done this then you cannot have lessons with our onsite (school based) tutors. If you have not returned the enrolment form AND/OR you have missed the email with the contact details please send me an email at the address below or give me a call at school and I can send this information through to you.

All students receiving school based lessons will receive a Term Lesson Invoice directly from the Conservatorium, these will be sent to you shortly. I was very excited to announce last week that as of Term 2 you can also apply for the $100 Creative Kids Voucher and use this towards lesson payments in Term 2, 3 or 4. If you are having your lessons with an external provider remember to ask them if they are registered for this government initiative. School Band fees will be invoiced directly from the school this year NOT the P&C. Payment methods will be outlined on your invoice. Instrument Hire fees will also be invoiced from the school and not the P&C. Payment information will be provided on this invoice as well. This week our new training band members will have their first ever lessons with their tutors. I know some of them have been very excited for this day! Lessons will start at 12:00pm. Tutors will let me know their timetable for the day and I will pass this onto their teachers. If you are hiring an instrument, these will be handed out to the students by their tutors at their lesson time. Please make sure you have returned a signed copy of your Hire Agreement. I cannot let the instruments go home with the students until this is signed. If you have your own instrument, please make sure this comes to school on Wednesday. If you have purchased the beginner book “Accent on Achievement” please bring this on Wednesday as well. Remember to clearly mark your child’s name and class on the book so if it goes missing it can be easily returned. Books can be purchased from Foleys Music/Musos corner.

Please send me an email at [email protected] if you need any more information or clarification on anything above. I know we have changed a few things this year.
