SAMARITANS CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE STATE BASKETBALL
Merewether Heights Public School are supporting The Samaritans Christmas Giving Tree this year. By donating an unwrapped gift your family can assist a local family in need at this special time of year . We ask that you leave your unwrapped gift under the tree in the office foyer. We hope that you are able to help us to support The Samaritans this Christmas. Gift suggestions are on page 4. Gifts can be donated during week 7, 8 & 9 with collection occurring at the end of week 9.
On Friday our Boys Basketball team travelled to Penrith for the ‘Final 8’ of the NSW PSSA knockout competition. Their quarter final game was against Byron Bay PS and after a close first half, the boys’ ability to score easy baskets was too much for their opposition and they finished with a 45-34 victory. The semi-final was against Griffith North PS and this proved to be a much tougher contest! The boys were playing some great basketball and held onto a slight lead for the whole first half. The Griffith boys came out firing in the third quarter and were able to wipe the deficit and gain a lead that could not be reversed. The end score was 48-37 in favour of Griffith North PS who would go on to be the eventual winners of the competition. A 36 degree day in Sydney’s West meant that all players involved in the day were exhausted towards the end of the day. The final game for the day was a playoff for 3rd place against Wamberal PS. Our boys showed great determination and persistence and were too strong, winning 54-34 to secure 3rd place. Each of the 8 boys that represented the school contributed to the team’s success in various ways, whether it be setting screens and blocks for others, defending hard or being a scoring threat. Hunter Regional champions and 3rd in the state is a great achievement! Well done! Dustin Spriggs

Could you be an Ethics Teacher?
We have been very lucky to be able to run the
Primary Ethics program at our school for the last
few years as it is taught and coordinated by vol-
unteers. However, we are likely to need some
additional teachers in the new year to meet de-
mand.
It would be wonderful to hear from anyone who
would like to volunteer. Ethics classes are run on
Wednesdays from 2:25-2:55 for K-2 and 2:55 -
3:25 for Y3-6.
Ethics classes can be taught by parents, carers, grandparents or other family or members of the community - experience is not required and training is provided. If you would like to consider volunteering for Ethics or know someone who may be interested, please contact our ethics coordinator Ainslie Frazer on 0406 804 594 or [email protected] or visit www.primaryethics.com.au.
