This Sunday, 11 November, is Remembrance Day which has a special significance in 2018. The following is an extract from the Australian War Memorial: Sunday, 11 November 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War (191418). One hundred years ago, on 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare. With their armies retreating and close to collapse, German leaders signed an Armistice, bringing to an end the First World War. From the summer of 1918, the five divisions of the Australian Corps had been at the forefront of the allied advance to victory. Beginning with their stunning success at the battle of Hamel in July, they helped to turn the tide of the war at Amiens in August, followed by the capture of Mont St Quentin and Pèronne, and the breaching of German defences at the Hindenburg Line in September. By early October the exhausted Australians were withdrawn from battle. They had achieved a fighting reputation out of proportion to their numbers, but victory had come at a heavy cost. They suffered almost 48,000 casualties during 1918, including more than 12,000 dead. In the four years of the war more than 330,000 Australians had served overseas, and more than 60,000 of them had died. The social effects of these losses cast a long shadow over the post-war decades. Each year on this day Australians observe one minute’s silence at 11am, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. World Teachers’ Day

Every day, teachers are making a difference through educating and inspiring young people. World Teachers’ Day is celebrated on the last Friday in October and is an opportunity to show appreciation to teachers across the world for the contributions they make. World Teachers' Day was inaugurated on 5th October 1994 by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to commemorate the 1966 joint signing of the UNESCO/ILO (International Labour Organisation) Recommendation concerning the status of Teachers. At Hamilton South Public School we would like to acknowledge the amazing things our teachers do for the students and the school. We are very fortunate to have the teachers we have and the skills, knowledge and enthusiasm they bring to the school. They work very hard to improve outcomes for students. Thank You: Miss Conry, Ms Winney, Mrs Rigney, Mrs O’Brien, Ms Heagney, Mrs Keast, Mrs Pettit, Mrs Kelly, Ms Britten, Mrs Binale, Mrs Simpson, Mrs Robinson, Mr Jetson, Mr Luff, Mrs Bell, Mr Freeman, Mr True, Mr McCann, Mrs Edwards, Ms Hamill, Mrs Gorton, Mrs Hetherington, Ms Levi, Mrs Maxfield, Ms Cathcart, Mrs Thornton, Mrs Wilson, Mrs Payne, Mrs Walsh and Mrs Fodeades.

School Gardens Our enthusiastic gardeners have been back in action over the weekend. This included putting the bridge back in place in the K-2 garden. The students love the bridge and this area of the playground is very much used and enjoyed. ‘Thank You’ - to Caroline, our ‘gardening guru’ for her significant time spent enhancing the school grounds; to Jason Nolan, who spent the weekend repairing the bridge; and to Bruce Bosworth a future HSPS grandparent, for cutting down the non-standard replacement timber struts for the bridge.

Enrolling at Hamilton South Public School The Department of Education’s Enrolment of Students in Government Schools: A summary and Consolidation of Policy requires schools to determine the school’s enrolment capacity to cater for anticipated local demand and to ensure that every eligible child has a place at his or her local school if she or he chooses to attend it. A copy of the Hamilton South Public School Enrolment Policy is located on the school website. The primary criterion for acceptance of non-local enrolments is the availability of permanent classroom accommodation. Hamilton South Public School has reached its enrolment ceiling based on permanent classrooms. Please Note: If a student is enrolled with a residential address inside the school’s intake zone, and then their family moves to a new residential address outside the intake zone, younger siblings are not able to enrol at Hamilton South Public School in future years. Local Enrolments – Proof of Address Hamilton South Public School requires two documents as proof of address for students who live in the school intake zone.

These are:

A council rates notice or residential lease; and

A utility account. (Electricity, gas, water or telephone)

RockOn

Our exciting new music program called “RockOn” will be continuing this term. This program is being run by The Newcastle Conservatorium of Music and if you would still like to participate in the program please let Mrs Bell know ASAP. The program is an excellent opportunity for young musicians in Years 3,4,5 and 6, who are interested in gaining skills in performing and recording in a contemporary ensemble. Additionally, the HSPS “RockOn” ensemble will record pieces at the University of Newcastle studios and be involved in performance opportunities at Hamilton South Public School. Rehearsal ARE ON this week, Tuesday November 6 from 3:00pm - 4:00pm in the school hall. Payments are due every Tuesday morning to the office before school. Fees are $13 per week. Please make sure your child's name and class are clearly written on the envelope or bag. RockOn students will meet Mrs Bell in the hall straight after school. Drum kits, amps, microphones and keyboards are provided by the school. If you play a guitar/bass guitar or other instrument please bring this along on the day. Parents need to pick up their child from the hall at 4:00pm. If your child attends OOSH on Tuesday they need to come to the hall and Mrs Bell will take them over and sign them in. OOSH students will return to OOSH staff straight after rehearsal. YEAR 7 2020

Please note We have recently been informed that the renaming of Hurlstone Agricultural High School on the Glenfield site as Roy Watts High School will not take place for entry to Year 7 in 2020. We have, accordingly, changed all of our documents and removed mention of Roy Watts High School for 2020 entry, including in the school choices menu in the application website. In addition to the above, the new Hurlstone Agricultural High School at Richmond will not be available for applicants for Year 7 entry in 2020. Parents may apply for the existing Hurlstone Agricultural High School at Glenfield for entry in 2020. The updated version of the application information is available on the website: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7. PSSA Girls’ Knockout Touch Football Finals

Last Monday 29 October the PSSA Girls’ Knockout Touch Team travelled to North Parramatta for the finals of the 2018 competition. In the Quarter-Final we played Orange Public School. The girls had a spectacular win scoring 8 tries to 1. We then moved through to the Semi-Final and played last year’s champions, Banora Point Public School. Unfortunately they were just too strong for us and won 5-2. They had an endless stream of fresh subs and a few national runners. Banora Point PS took on South Wagga PS in the Final. They ended up having a draw and were awarded joint champions for 2018. I look forward to the 2019 competition. We will be sad to lose four of our Year 6 girls next year but I am sure they will continue to play representative touch football for years to come.

To make it this far has been an outstanding achievement by the team and an experience I am sure they will all remember. I am so proud of the way they have all played and conducted themselves throughout the competition.

I would again like to thank all our amazing parents for their assistance with transporting the team and equipment, setting up shelters and support at the games. It has been very much appreciated and made this a successful campaign. A big thank you to Phil Morgan (our team coach) who has dedicated so much of his own time to train the girls.

Mrs. Robinson

Google Home and Amazon Echo Google Home and Amazon Echo are fast becoming the sleek new ‘must have’ device. They can do all kinds of amazing things like turn your lights off or even read your kids a bedtime story. These devices use voice commands and artificial intelligence (AI). As with any artificial intelligence the technology ‘learns’ your habits. So here is what you need to know:

You still need to ensure that you have the correct settings on your account/apps that the device is connected to – this will limit inappropriate music/content and unauthorised purchases

Both devices allow you to make phone calls (“Hey Google, call Kmart!”)

Your Privacy – some companies track what you buy, what you watch, where you visit online and your contacts. Yes, you can turn off the microphone when you don’t want it to hear you, however it comes back on when you ask it to (which is interesting if the microphone was supposed to be off in the first place).

Kids Privacy – you can train your device to recognise individual voices and set up individual profiles with different user privileges. We all know that kids are pretty free when they speak about their feelings and personal information, particularly at home. Information gathered from these devices is encrypted and stored for a period of time. However, this information which is stored ‘in the cloud’ could be potentially used by third parties to whom you haven’t specifically given consent. Plus it makes your information vulnerable to data breaches.

If you would like to read more about either of these devices please visit the Common Sense Media Website - https://www.commonsensemedia.org/blog/what-parents-need-to-know-before-buying-google-home-or-amazon-echo

Band Happenings

It was another BIG week for our talented HSPS musicians. Last Thursday, I had the absolute pleasure of taking our Concert Band members over to Lambton High School to be part of Newcastle’s biggest Music: Count Us In celebration. And BIG it was with over 500 students from Belmont to Muswellbrook all singing and playing together in perfect harmony. What more can Creative Artists want! Feel free to check out the coverage from NBN News and ABC Live by using the links below.

Remember that this week will be Merge Week! This means that instead of having 2 bands (Training Band and Concert Band) we will now have one larger group - The HSPS Concert Band. ALL band members will attend both morning rehearsals - Wednesday AND Thursday, for the rest of the term. Please let Mrs Bell or Ms Philippa know if you have any other activities on that will interrupt the new rehearsal schedule. Training Band members will need to bring their Blue Folders as they will now be “Levelled Up” to a new Concert Band Black Folder for the rest of the year. We will also begin practising our Christmas Concert pieces ready for our Frogstomp and End of Year Presentation Night Concert.

As always if you have any questions, queries or concern please feel free to email me at [email protected]
