The Austin Fire Department (AFD) is requesting your support in helping us disseminate information regarding our current recruit-ment initiative. Specifically, we are asking you to notify organiza-tions, church groups, civic associations, business associates, and media outlets in your professional and social networks in an effort to publicize our hiring process to qualified individuals in the His-panic community.
Austin has a fast growing Hispanic community and Latinos now make up 35% of the city’s population. Thus, we are seeking well qualified, service minded candidates who relate to and respect the many cultures we serve. Successful candidates with these qualities will enhance our ability and effectiveness in responsive emergency services to all of our customers.
The values of the Austin Fire Department parallel those of your organization. Firefighters are taught to be leaders, to exhibit in-tegrity in all things. The Austin Fire Department protects life and property to ensure the overall prosperity of the community. Our expectation for our firefighters is that they will embody these val-ues and commit themselves to excellence in service.
Firefighters work a flexible schedule of 24 hours on duty and 48 hours off duty. Many of them utilize their ample time off to fur-ther their education, run their own business, or give back to the community. The job of an Austin Firefighter is challenging but ex-tremely rewarding. AFD provides an appealing benefits package including an excellent pension plan and competitive salary. Fire-fighters earn $53,456 after just one year of service and $63,311 after three years. As well, AFD offers $150 a month bilingual pay to Spanish speaking firefighters along with numerous other spe-cialty, certification and education incentive pays.
We recognize the value of your developed network and would be very grateful for assistance in reaching out to those who are utilizing it to find opportunities such as the one we are offering. We anticipate hiring approximately 80 new firefighters from this process.
The most recent issue of Hispanic magazine lists Austin as the “Best City for Hispanics to Live In” and we agree.

Speak Up for a Child During National Foster Care Month – Become a CASA Volunteer!

Each May, National Foster Care Month provides an op-portunity to shine a light on the experiences of the more than 400,000 children and youth in the foster care system nationwide. In Texas alone there were more than 29,000 children in foster care in 2010.
CASA of Travis County speaks up for children in foster care by empowering our community to volunteer as advocates for them in the court system. CASA volunteers come from every walk of life and share a commitment to improving children’s lives, a willingness to learn and an open mind to-wards life experiences different from their own. Volunteers complete an interview, background checks and 33 hours of intensive training. After being sworn-in by a judge, vol-unteers are appointed to a child or family of children and spend an average of 20 hours a month advocating for these children for at least a year.
For children who’ve been abused or neglected, CASA means having a home instead of feeling lost, and being a priority instead of feeling invisible. For volunteers, CASA is a life-changing experience that makes our community a better place.

Son personas que están dispuestas a aprender y que poseen una mente abierta que les permite ver la vida de otros, cuyas circunstancias de vida quizá fueron diferentes a las suyas. Las personas que trabajan de volun-tarios tienen que entrevistarse, someterse a una revisión de antecedentes y tomar 33 horas de capacitación intensiva. Una vez que toman juramento ante un juez, CASA les asigna a un niño o un grupo de hermanos para que aboguen por ellos. Después de esto, los voluntarios donan 20 horas cada mes para estar a la disposición de los niños por un período mínimo de un año.
Para los niños que han sido maltrat-ados o abandonados, CASA repre-senta un hogar, un lugar donde no se sienten perdidos y donde son una prioridad, donde no son invisibles. Word-of-Mouth Marketing Is Now At Your Fingertips

We all appreciate the importance of word-of-mouth mar-keting, and the same applies online. When I visit a mem-ber’s restaurant, I check-in on foursquare. I may mention them on twitter, or tag a photo of my palate pleasing dish. If we are having a meeting, I thank our member for hosting us.
When I encounter great customer service, or just a pleas-ing experience overall, you bet I’m telling the world about it - both online and offline.
Word-of-mouth doesn’t end at people’s lips. It is now at their fingertips – from checking in on foursquare, tweet-ing their experience, pinning a photo on pinterest, writ-ing on their Facebook wall or reviewing them on Google Places. The opportunities are endless. Make sure you are easily accessible online for your customers, and future customers!

Looking for a way to engage, get involved and have more expo-sure at the GAHCC? As a membership organization, the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce operates with an inherent dependency on the feedback and involvement of its members. To ensure members have every opportunity to engage the GAHCC, we are looking for members of our supporting community to join us in our Ambassador Program and Membership Committee.
The Ambassador Program and the Membership Committee is formed by members who serve as the goodwill arm of the Chamber by promoting a positive relationship with existing and new businesses. They help the Chamber grow, while simul-taneously strengthening members’ business and surrounding communities.

The City of Austin’s Bond Election Task Force Invites You to a Special-Called Task Force Meetings

The City of Austin’s Bond Election Advisory Task Force has been hard at work reviewing projects and programs for potential bond funding and taking into account the feedback they’ve received from the public on what a potential bond package should look like.
The Task Force has divided itself into four committees to prepare initial recommendations on how to narrow down the list of potential projects for bond funding from the $1.49 billion Capital Needs Assessment pro-vided by staff and additional projects presented to them by the com-munity.
The Task Force committees are: Affordable Housing, City Facilities, Parks & Open Space, and Transportation & Mobility. The committee recom-mendations are still being developed, but will be available for review on the bond development website after April 23rd.
The Task Force invites you to attend one of two special-called Task Force meetings/community forums on May 2nd and May 3rd to learn more about the committee recommendations and provide feedback directly to Task Force members. The special-called meetings/community forums will take place: • Wednesday, May 2nd, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at Akins High School, 10701 South 1st Street (bus route #201) • Thursday, May 3rd, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at Lanier High School, 1201 Payton Gin Road (bus route #1L, #1M, #10, #325)

Univision Radio Invite Families to the Largest Cinco de Mayo Celebration in Austin

Univision Radio stations La Que Buena 104.3 FM and La Jefa 107.7 FM invite families in Central Texas to experience culture, entertainment and pride while taking part in the largest Cinco de Mayo Celebration in Austin.
The celebration includes live music from internationally known artists such as Lalo Mora, Las Estrellas De Tu-zantla, Vagon Chicano, Los Herederos De Nuevo Leon, Chon Arauza, and many more! There will also be local community performances including Roy Lozano Ballet Folklorico, carnival rides, Texas Parks & Wildlife Activity Zone and many more activities for the whole family to enjoy. This year we will have the first ever Construction Workers Expo- an event filled with information, giveaways and even safety trainings!
