NOTRE DAME CHURCH HOUSTON, TEXAS APRIL 3, 2016 From the Pastor A big welcome and prayerful congratulations to our brothers and sisters who received the Sacraments last Easter vigil. Altogether we had 57 - 17 adults and 40 children and youth. I extend my profound gratitude to the RCIC (Rite of Initiation for Children) catechists, and the Spanish and English RCIA (Rite of Initiation for Adults) team for their hard work in preparing these catechumens and candidates for this very important event in their life. Special thanks to Deacon Frank who heads the RCIA program. I hope that they (and all of us) will indeed live up to the baptismal promises they made and which we renewed last Easter Sunday to renounce sin and Satan, and the lure of evil so that we can live in the freedom of God’s children and that sin will have no mastery over us; to be children of the light and be witnesses of Christ and the values that he preached and practiced love, service, compassion, humility and forgiveness. This is the same invitation that Divine Mercy Sunday which we celebrate today extends to us. And on this Jubilee Year of Mercy, it takes and even greater meaning as we are enjoined to “be merciful as our Heavenly Father is merciful.” It continues the message of Jesus on the Cross, “Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing,” a very eloquent message of forgiveness. And equally eloquent is the message of what happens when one asks for forgiveness, “This day you will be with me in Paradise.” In the wake and in the midst of the violence and terrorism happening in our world today, the call to be merciful cannot be more necessary and relevant. And of course given our human flaw and the natural inclination for vengeance, it is always indispensable. We have to bear with one another’s faults and shortcomings, we have always to forgive and ask one’s forgiveness. NOTRE DAME CHURCH HOUSTON, TEXAS APRIL 3, 2016

From the Pastor A big welcome and prayerful congratulations to our

brothers and sisters who received the Sacraments last Easter

vigil. Altogether we had 57 - 17 adults and 40 children and

youth. I extend my profound gratitude to the RCIC (Rite of

Initiation for Children) catechists, and the Spanish and

English RCIA (Rite of Initiation for Adults) team for their

hard work in preparing these catechumens and candidates

for this very important event in their life. Special thanks to

Deacon Frank who heads the RCIA program.

I hope that they (and all of us) will indeed live up to the

baptismal promises they made and which we renewed last

Easter Sunday – to renounce sin and Satan, and the lure of

evil so that we can live in the freedom of God’s children and

that sin will have no mastery over us; to be children of the

light and be witnesses of Christ and the values that he

preached and practiced – love, service, compassion, humility

and forgiveness.

This is the same invitation that Divine Mercy Sunday which

we celebrate today extends to us. And on this Jubilee Year of

Mercy, it takes and even greater meaning as we are enjoined

to “be merciful as our Heavenly Father is merciful.”

It continues the message of Jesus on the Cross, “Father,

forgive them for they do not know what they are doing,” a

very eloquent message of forgiveness. And equally eloquent

is the message of what happens when one asks for

forgiveness, “This day you will be with me in Paradise.”

In the wake and in the midst of the violence and terrorism

happening in our world today, the call to be merciful cannot

be more necessary and relevant. And of course given our

human flaw and the natural inclination for vengeance, it is

always indispensable. We have to bear with one another’s

faults and shortcomings, we have always to forgive and ask

one’s forgiveness.

In the words of Pope Francis ‘a little mercy will make the

world less cold and more just.’

Your brother and friend,

Fr. Roland

A little tickler

A man had just undergone coronary surgery at Mercy Hospital

and was in the recovery room. A Sister of Mercy was at his

bedside to reassure him that all went well. “You are going to be

fine, Mr. Jones. However, we need to know how you intend to

pay for your hospital stay. Do you have insurance coverage?”

“No, I don’t,” the groggy man answered. “Is it possible for you to

pay in cash then?” the nun persisted. “No, I’m afraid that’s not

possible,” he replied. “Well, do you have any close relatives?” the

nun asked. “Only my sister in Arkansas, but she’s a humble

spinster nun.”

“Mr. Jones, I must correct you. Nuns are not spinsters for they are

married to God,” the nun explained. “Well, in that case, send my

bill to my brother-in-law!” he said.

SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER or SUNDAY OF DIVINE MERCY ____________________________________________________________________________________________________

estar bien, Sr. Jones.
