From the Desk of Father Scolaro Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, We find ourselves in a most unusual summer. Day by day states are being added to a “Do not visit” list, movie theaters are closed, many pools ask for reservations, and the beaches require masks. The world has been flipped upside down, and it’s hard to do what we would normally be doing during the summer months. I can only imagine the frustration many are feeling, especially children used to being able to go to camps, play sports, and enjoy time with family and friends. There’s nothing worse than being cooped up in the house and looking out the window at a beautiful day, but that’s probably the best image for what many of us are feeling on a bigger level – we’re all just looking out the window of our limited lives waiting to be able to get back to normal. As we try to bring our faith into moments like these, we should be asking, what is Christ asking of us in this moment? It may seem like an odd question, but we know God always works good through even the most difficult circumstances, so our job is to find the good God is seeking for us now. Again to put it another way, what good could possibly come of all this? I would suggest that there are perhaps two big ways this time can be used well and serve us in advancing on that most important path to holiness. First, I believe God is challenging all of us to grow in acceptance. Part of the frustration of this time is that we are unable to do what we want to do. We can’t plan, we can’t organize, we can’t go out and choose from an unlimited list of things as we usually can. And while we can grumble about this loss of freedom, is not the better alternative to grow in gratitude for all that we normally take for granted? What a blessing that we normally do have this yearly time to relax, travel, enjoy time with others. How many in our world are far worse off and suffering, particularly in this time? Not only that, there’s the old expression, “Man plans, God laughs,” and what better time to appreciate that lesson. We are not in control of our lives, rather God is. While we can delude ourselves into thinking we call the shots, part of growing in holiness is that we become more flexible and responsive to the movement of the Holy Spirit in our hearts and in the situations around us. Ra-ther than set our own plans and fight manically to achieve them, holiness is striving for goals, but always ask-ing if they are God’s will, and accepting if situations beyond our control prevent us from attaining them. “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wis-dom to know the difference.” The second way in which we can grow during this summer then, is to use our time in new ways that bring us closer to God. Perhaps we have more time to pray than we normally do. Maybe we are able to read a good spiritual book and find more time to reflect on scripture. Is this a time to check out some new spiritual content on FORMED.org, Youtube, or a good podcast? Should we spend a little more time with family, giving more of ourselves to them and the community? Time is always a gift, but it is a gift we can use well or poorly. How often do we complain that we don’t have enough time to commit ourselves to these spiritual goals? Why not now? If we do truly try to grow in our faith during this time, especially as so many are looking for a source comfort and stability, we will find ourselves coming out of all this far better off than when we began. Let’s continue to approach this time with a readiness to accept God’s will in all things and a sanguine optimism that allows us to find ways to use this time to grow in virtue and holiness. When we are back to be-ing overly busy again, we’ll look back and wish we had some of this free time again. Rather than looking longingly out the window then, let’s make the most of it, and someday we’ll look back and be glad we did not let this time go to waste. Yours in Christ,

Thank you ….. Our 5th Joint Feast of St. Thomas & St. Chavara Kuriakose was done well. The Holy Mass was held at the GYM keeping social distancing protocol. There was good participation for the celebration. Three priests concelebrated the mass. Fr. Scolaro welcomed all. People from neighboring parishes also attended the feast. Fr. Johnny Thomas was the main celebrant. Fr. Shaju gave a nice homily, which all appreciated. Due to the Covid situation we cancelled the solemn procession. All got the chance to venerate the relic of St. Chavara. The Indian choir sang songs in Eng-lish and the Indian language Malayalam. Light re-freshments were given after the celebration Let me thank all of our volunteers who came to do all the preparations for the feast, setting up of the auditorium, decorating, flower setting, refreshments etc. By the grace of God, we had nice weather. Let us continue to ask the intercession of St.Thomas & St. Chavara for the healing of all those affected by the Corona virus all over the world. St. Chavara, the patron of families, blesses all our family members. Enjoy the summer as much as you are safely able to.

Notre Dame School #NDStrong

Our world has certainly been turned upside down!

We left school on March 13, not knowing what the next few months would bring. Suddenly, our administrators and teachers were faced with creating a whole new style of teaching and learning for our students.

Fortunately, our teachers were ready! We jumped into our online learning on March 16th. Our students in Grades 4 through 8 have been using google classroom for several years, so this was not as big an adjustment as it might have been. It didn’t take long for us to add Kindergarten through Grade 3. Colleagues pitched in and soon all teachers were fully immersed in the world of online learning. Even our smallest scholars joined in, with teachers scheduling Google Meets for crafts, chats and bedtime stories. Our special content teachers are all on board as well, with our four language classes continuing, STREAM learning, PE and Health. Our Music teacher continues to visit all of her classes, bringing fingerplays and funny songs. We even had our first Art Show open this week! Our teachers have explored and collaborated with their coworkers, learning new appli-cations and learning platforms. Our students have had access to both IXL and Razz Kids for a while, but their teachers have extended their learning opportunities through the use of other sites.

Each morning either Mrs. McCarthy, our Assistant Principal, or Mrs. Durkin, our Principal posts a video of our morning prayers, pledge and announcements. This is a great way for the children to start the day and to be reminded of our regular morning routines. Our administrators often drop into Google Meets throughout the day, maintaining close connections with our students.

Our Pastor, Father Joseph Scolaro, has been reaching out to our parishioners and our students in many ways. He celebrated our First Friday Masses in April and May, and prefaced both of them with a short chat with the students. He traveled throughout the parish for Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, blessing people as they greeted him in the street. He and the other priests and our two deacons, also blessed houses at Easter. Father says Mass frequently and all are welcome. These events, along with a tour of the church, a detailed explanation of Mass and Bible Study, serve to strengthen us and keep our faith strong. Father joins our students in our Google Meets and is happy to see them, as things are certainly much quieter around Notre Dame these days.
