The analytical officer will work closely with both the Interface and Surface Analysis Centre (ISAC) and the Laboratory of Biophysics and Surface Analysis (LBSA) to provide technical and experimental support to ongoing projects. The role holder will provide operational support and consultancy, with an emphasis on multi-instrument or facility experimental operations, data analysis and data reporting. The analyst will preferentially work to provide industrial or commercial services, but also be available to support core research in the LBSA and broader School of Pharmacy where appropriate. Main Responsibilities % time per year

1. Experimental Operation:

Competently operate of a range of specialist surface analytical instrumentation that may include (but is not limited to):-Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS)-X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS)-Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) -Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM)-Raman Spectroscopy

Work closely with ISAC to perform and monitor bespoke commercial and research analysis, in the first instance funded by Johnson & Johnson.

Provide operational support and analysis for academics, post-doctoral researchers and post-graduate students.

Work with the current experimental officer personnel to manage workload and instrument up-time.

Integrate into several surface analytical facilities both within and outside of the School of Pharmacy (e.g. Nottingham Nanotechnology and Nanoscience Centre (NNNC), the Advanced Materials Research Group (AMRG).

2. Data Analysis and Reporting:

Provide specialist and standardised data analysis for commercial and research purposes.

Provide appropriate data interpretation when required. Regularly brief and report commercial progress and data to the ISAC

business manager.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential DesirableQualifications/ Education 1. A 1st or upper 2nd class honours

degree (or equivalent) in materials, manufacturing, pharmacy or related discipline.

PhD in surface and interface analysis or related materials characterisation techniques.

Skills/Training 2. Skills in using a range of analytical instrumentation including ToF-SIMS, XPS, SEM and AFM.

3. Excellent inter-personal skills and the capacity to work as part of a diverse team of academics, experimental and business officers.

4. Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate complex information with clarity and write to a publishable standard.

5. Flexible, proactive and dedicated approach.

6. Willingness to learn and apply a broad range of technical skills to complex analytical systems.

Trained user of surface analytical instrumentation.

Experience 7. Familiarity with/understanding of surface and interfacial science.

8. Experience of working to, and achieving, targets and deadlines.

9. A consistent track record of published research in peer-reviewed journals and writing high quality reports and papers for publication.

Experience with multiple surface specific physical and chemical characterisation techniques and instrumentation.

Experience of working in the analytical service industry.
