    OCTOBER/NOVEMBER SESSION 2001 10 hours max.

    May be opened and given to the candidates upon receipt.

    TIME 10 hours max.

    INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES

    Write your name, Centre number, candidate number and question number clearly on the top right-handcorner of the front of each sheet of paper.

    Design for one of the subjects overleaf.

    In addition to the examination piece, up to three sheets of supporting work should be submitted.These should be the sheets of preparatory work undertaken after the receipt of this question paper.

    All sheets must be correctly labelled and securely fastened at the top left hand corner.

    N.B. All questions are for designs on paper. Candidates should not produce work in any other medium.

    1 Design using Lettering

    Either (a) Design a symbol for an architectural company called T Square. The name of thecompany must be included in your design.

    Or (b) Design a business card for a company specializing in selling antiques and artefacts.

    The name of the company is Ampersand.

    2 Illustration and Calligraphy

    Either (a) Design the cover for a science fiction publication called Mind Benders. Include yourname as that of the author.

    Or (b) In a calligraphic script with which you are familiar, write out the following poem andadd a decorative border and/or illustration.

    Stately Spanish galleon coming from the Isthmus,Dipping through the Tropics by the palm green shores,With a cargo of diamonds,Emeralds, amethysts,Topazes, and cinnamon, and gold moidores.

    3 Environmental Design

    Either (a) Ghost train. Design a fantasy horror ride as part of a special feature at a new theme

    park.

    Or (b) Design the station and train for a ghost ride.

    4 Interior Design

    Either (a) Design a mural for the reception area of a perfume company.

    Or (b) Design a carpet in the Art Deco style for a cinema foyer.

    5 Fashion Design

    Create and design a costume for a creature in a sci-fi film called Space Fantasy.

    6 Fabric Design

    Either (a) Create a design for a scarf based on the work of Kandinsky or the Cubists.

    Or (b) Design a repeat pattern for furnishing fabric for a shipping line.

    7 Printmaking

    Design a print based on one of the following themes:

    (a) Twisting and turning

    (b) Sea life

    (c) Architectural faades

    8 Photography

    Make a personal response to one of the following themes:

    (a) Head wear

    (b) Playing

    (c) Street corner

    (d) Looking down

    You are expected to process and print your own photographs.

    One main and two supporting photographs must be submitted. All three studies may be mountedon one side of thin card not exceeding A2 in size. Alternatively, they may be contained in a clearplastic A4 cover. Contact prints of negative showing other possible angles and views must beincluded as part of the accompanying preparatory work.
