During this season of Thanksgiving I want to give thanks for the blessings I have received and remember what is really impor-tant in life. I am thankful for God , His grace, and His word that guides me daily; I am thankful for my family who brings joy to my life and always makes me laugh; and I am thankful for my friends who have been there every step of the way with fun, great talks, and always words of wisdom. I look forward to a great Thanks-giving as our family meets at my parents house and my daughter comes home from college for a whole week!

I hope you enjoy this issue of Game Day. Parker Butler’s story is one that touched me. When I met Parker and his family I was so impressed with the kindness and sheer happi-ness that they displayed. You will love this story about Parker and the Flat Rock football players who have been blessed by having him as a teammate.

Another great feature this month is about another amazing boy named Adam Koenig, or “Stats” as most people know him. Dessa Dunn did a great job telling his story of becoming a sports announcer in Fayette County. I am amazed every day at the talent and expertise of our youth in the community.

I also want to welcome our newest member to the Game Day family. Jennifer Eschenhorst just started her own Game Day in Cobb County. She is publishing the East Cobb edition initially and will expand into West Cobb in several months. We wish her the best.

From all of us as Game Day we wish you all a happy Thanksgiving. Eat a lot of turkey, watch some football, visit with family and friends, and reflect on the blessings you have been given.

Alex Ostendorf is a senior at MHS and a second year starter on the MHS Varsity football team. He plays defensive and offensive line. Alex has been playing football since he was three years old. “I loved watching it on TV and my dad played football in college,” he states. Playing football just came naturally to him. Not only did he join MHS football his freshman year, but he also started dressing out for varsity. All the dedication, hard work, and summer practices paid off when it comes to game nights. Alex claims, “My favorite memory is every Friday night still getting those butterflies; I haven’t ever felt that anywhere else.” Alex plans to continue to play in college. “I don’t know where or have any type of scholarships [yet], but I just want to have the chance to keep playing after high school.” If he had a choice, he would choose to play for either Georgia Southern or Georgia State. Alex is also an active member of FCA.

Because her parents did Ironman Triathlons, Starr’s Mill junior Nicole Chrzanowski was inspired to start running. She’s been running track every year since 7th grade and cross-country since 9th grade, running for varsity all three years of high school. She’s captain of the varsity cross-country team. Chrzanowski loves participating in triathlons. This past August she competed at Youth Elite Nationals in San Diego. “I’ve been blessed to train with people of such high caliber. I love traveling and being able to compete across the country,” she said. Besides her parents, family friend and professional triath-lete April Gellatly inspires her. “She’s been through so many struggles,” Chrzanowski said. “But she’s pushed through them to fulfill her dream of becoming a professional.” Besides participating in meets and triathlons, Chrzanowski balances extracurricular activities and keeps a 3.9 GPA. She’s the 2013 class Treasurer and a Highgrove Hurricanes swim coach. She’s part of HOSA, Beta Club, and Spanish Honor Society and competes on SMHS’s swim, track, and cross-country team. She hopes to compete at a higher level for the rest of her life.

Akeila Janae’ Lain is a powerful middle blocker for Sandy Creek’s thus far undefeated volleyball team. “Akeila has developed into one of the most intimidating middle hitters in the state,” says Coach Collins. “She is the career leader in blocks for Sandy Creek and adds to that total in every match. Akeila has been a key component to the success of the Sandy Creek volleyball program.” She plays for the excitement of the game and likes that “there is always something new to work on.” She enjoys working hard and hopes to make it to the championship again. In addition to volleyball, Akeila plays basketball for the school and enjoys training. With her 3.5 GPA she plans to attend the University of North Florida on a full volleyball scholarship. Good luck Akeila!

John Raville is a sophomore member of Our Lady of Mercy’s Cross Country Team. John is Mercy’s top runner, and has lowered his time standard at 5000m in nearly every race he has run. In early October, John ran a personal best of 17:32 on challenging Westminster course, winning by over 200 meters. “John is set up nicely to run some very fast times at Regions and State in early November and will surprise a lot of people,” says Mercy coach Matt Hofkes. “John is one of the most competitive athletes I have coached and is a great example to his teammates of where a lot of heart can take you.”

Mackenzie TolerWhitewater junior Mackenzie Toler, calls the softball diamond her home. Mackenzie be-gan what would become her softball career at the age of six and has played ever since. She plays first base and pitcher, but favors being pitcher because she feels like she has more control of the game. During her freshman year, she aided the Lady Wildcats on their journey to state. This year Mackenzie’s exceptional skills on first base have played a large part of the effort that has qualified the Cats for State once again. Also, Mackenzie made the top-notch travel team known as Georgia Force. Mackenzie has played softball for eleven years and does not plan on stopping any time soon. Though she finds her infatuation with softball difficult to explain, she has a deep love for the game that stems from the excitement and the intense pressure she feels while on the diamond doing what she loves. She has high hopes of continuing to play while in college. Though not sure where she wants to attend, she is certain she wants to become a physicians’ assistant and lend a helping hand to others.

Brook HeardFayette County High SchoolBrook Heard is a senior runner for the Fayette County Cross Country team. She has been a varsity runner for the past four years and is very passionate about running. Brook says that, “Running is a great de-stressor for me. It helps me relax because it is just you and nature. Running is a self-motivator too.” As a four year runner, Brook is a great motivator for other less experienced runners and has developed into a strong leader for the team. Not only has running cross country motivated Brook to become a life-long runner, she also has aspira-tions to work with future runners after college. She hopes to attend either the University of Georgia or Georgia Southern in the fall and eventually work with children who have autism. In addition to taking several Advanced Placement classes, being an Honor Roll student, and participating in several clubs, Brook is also very active in her church.

Anthony Gray, an 8th grader at FMS, plays running back and outside line-backer on the football team. Anthony has been playing football since he was seven years old when he played for the Riverdale Hurricanes. Last year he played for the Lovejoy Middle School football team. His favorite thing about playing football is scoring touchdowns. This year he scored twelve touchdowns for the Cubs. He has enjoyed playing football this year at Fayette Middle. “The FMS coaches are fun to play for. They inspire the players to always do their best,” said Anthony. He has learned a lot playing the sport and said, “Good things happen when you work hard, for yourself and for the team as a whole.” Anthony also plays basketball and runs track. When he is not playing sports, Anthony likes going to the movies with friends and spending time with family. In the future, Anthony would like to play college football at the University of Alabama after gradu-ating from high school.

Alana Rangitsch is a thriving student at J.C. Booth Middle School. She is on the Booth softball team and she has been playing the sport for five years. In Alana’s spare time, she enjoys hanging out with friends and playing the violin. Alana is also part of the J.C. Booth orchestra. In a pre-vious year at Booth, Alana received the “Citizenship Award”. Her favorite subject in school is mathematics. Coach Morrison says, “Alana epito-mizes humble character and is willing to do anything the coaches ask. I am extremely proud of the growth we witnessed in her athletic skills, but even more, I am proud of the integrity she displays to others.”

Chandler Tuitt is a up and coming athlete from Flat Rock. Playing both offensive and defensive tackle, he has a great football career ahead of him. His favorite parts of playing football are tackling the quarterback and bonding with the team. In addition to playing football, he enjoys paint ball, playing basketball, and running track for the school. His per-sonal philosophy is “go hard or go home” and he lives it out every day on the football field. The coaches say he is “probably the best lineman to come out of Flat Rock in the last seven years! Chandler’s hard work and dedication to football is one of the best we have ever seen… he is always willing to learn from his mistakes and get better. Chandler has a great attitude and is a great role model in the school building, a true leader.”

Whitewater Middle SchoolHannah NortonHannah Norton has played softball at Whitewater Middle School for the last two seasons under the leadership of Coach Denise Roth. Hannah has enjoyed having Coach Roth instruct and challenge her game, en-couraging her to be a team leader, not just a team player. Hannah plays the position of catcher and third base. She has played softball for the last five years in Fayetteville and Brooks. This past spring she played travel ball for the 12U Georgia Academy Red. She will play this season with the 14U Magic. Hannah loves the game of softball and is looking forward to playing in high school and beyond.

The center and defensive end for this year’s Rising Starr Panthers football team, Colin Maguire set the standard with his hard work, positive attitude, and dominant play on the field. Colin has shown great promise as a football player at RSMS and plans on playing next year at Starr’s Mill, and possibly beyond that as well. Although football is the dominant sport for Colin, he also enjoys playing basketball and tennis when he is not working at his parent’s Senoia restaurant. When asked who the athlete he most admires is, Colin named his father “because of all the things he has accomplished and he played college football.” And like his father, Colin someday hopes to run his own restaurant.

ACL Injuriesby Dr. Michael Gruber

Is it the ACL? That’s the question on everyone’s mind as we evaluate a college bound athlete with a knee injury. The story is all too common: a non-contact injury after a leap or quick stop, “pop” and a giving way, followed by pain and swelling in the knee and inability to return to a play. The questions continue. What is the ACL? How can you be sure it’s torn? What do we do now? Is surgery required to repair it? How do you fix it? When do we fix it? More and more often the parents are asking, “Why did this happen to her?”

In my practice, the athlete with an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury is more likely to be a 17 year old female soccer player than a 250 pound football player. In fact, among basketball and soccer players, women are 5 to 8 times more likely to sustain an ACL tear than a male player. There are several factors that create this disparity, including a difference in the anatomy of the male and female knee, strength and flexibility differences, and hormonal issues. In general, women are more “knock-kneed”, and they tend to have stronger quadriceps muscles in relation to their hamstrings. There are also the obvious hormonal differences

and the cyclic variation, differences in tissue strength and flexibility, and functional differences in technique and muscle function in activities such as jumping and landing. “OK, so those are some of the reasons it happens,” says her father,” but are you sure?”

The diagnosis is made based on patient history, physical exam, and diagnostic imaging. The ACL is one of the four major ligaments of the knee; it is in the middle of the knee and prevents the tibia (leg bone) from moving forward in relation to the femur (thigh bone). When the anterior cruciate ligament tears, it allows excessive motion in the knee that can usually be detected on physical exam. Often, an MRI will be obtained to confirm the diagnosis and to look for additional injury such as meniscal (soft cartilage cushion) tears.

If a complete ACL tear is found in a young athlete, it requires surgery to repair it. The ligament cannot heal itself. It is helpful to think of the ACL as a rope under tension. If it snaps in the middle, you are left with torn ends of rope that cannot be repaired and must be replaced with a new rope. Like the rope, the ACL is replaced, not repaired. In the young athlete, a hamstring tendon or a patellar tendon graft is used to replace the torn ACL. Surgical repair is scheduled when the injury has “quieted down” and good motion has returned. The surgery is done with minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques as an outpatient or with a one night stay in the hospital. Most patients are walking with crutches the next day and are back to school or work within a few days.

Full recovery, however, takes time. The body must heal and strengthen the newly created ligament. Physical therapy is essential in returning strength and function. Return to play usually occurs in 5 or 6 months if all the goals of therapy have been met. I tell my patients that I do the installation, but they have to “get the motor running”.

Another obvious question is how do we keep this from happening? There has been some success with programs developed in the hope of preventing ACL tears. Most of the research is aimed at women and addresses the issues with strength and technique previously mentioned. The PEP program, developed in Division I women’s soccer, is excellent and should be embraced by teams. Details on this program can be found at www.aclprevent.com/aclprevent.com. Additionally, information on ACL injuries can be found at our website at www.georgiaboneandjoint.org.

Inspiring, funny, enthusiastic, and happy. These are all words Flat Rock Middle School football players and coaches used to describe Parker Butler. After meeting this extraordinary boy, I would have to agree that these words describe him perfectly.

Parker’s story begins when he was just two years old. A day care employee suggested to his mom, Vickie, that Parker should be tested. Vickie thought something was wrong, and this teacher’s suggestion made her realize that her thoughts were valid. A doctor diagnosed Parker with PDD, which is a form of autism. Parker’s parents were devastated when they got the news, but decided that they were not going to let this disability stop them from giv-ing their son the opportunities and happiness that all little boys should have growing up.

Flat Rock’s MVPby Sue Smithall photos by Michelle Perkins

Page 15: Nov 2011_Fayette (Ga) Game Day

Vickie immediately wanted to identify the best services for Parker in the area. She found an abundance of sup-port in the community. She discovered Brain Balance Achievement Centers in Peachtree City. They did sensory motor exercises, cognitive exercises, and also looked at nutrition. Vickie learned that Parker was allergic to many things that affected his brain. It made a huge difference when those foods were taken out of his diet.

The Butlers were blessed to have a special teacher who impacted his life. Miss Bilotta was Parker’s teacher at Burch Elementary from first to fifth grade. She would do anything to help her students and believed in them. Miss Bilotta would let Parker do things for himself that many did not think he could do. She had the patience and abil-ity to teach him academics and life skills. She stood up for her students and made sure they got the services they needed.

Parker then went to Flat Rock Middle School in 6th grade. Many people knew him already as Vickie was very involved in school; in fact she is currently the PTO president. This helped the transition. At this point Parker was very involved in scouts through Hopewell United Methodist Church. He has shared this experience with his dad, Wilvor, who volunteers his time with the boys. He had not done a lot of physical activities, so his parents thought he should get involved in a sport to get more exercise.

Coach Travis, a football and basketball coach at Flat Rock, heard that the Butlers wanted Parker to get involved and suggest-ed that he go out for spring football. Parker did play spring football, but his parents thought that would be the extent of his play. “I thought it was over after spring practice, but then Coach Travis called and asked if Parker wanted to be part of the team,” said Vickie. So he did join and some amazing things happened which I discovered when I went to football practice.

While I was at football practice I talked with Parker, his par-ents, and to the players and coaches. The entire time I talked to Parker he had a smile on his face and his teammates came up to him to say hello, give him high fives, and they wanted me to know how much they thought of Parker. I could tell his teammates regarded him highly and that he had given them so much. Some of the comments I heard were:

“I help him every day to get ready. When everyone is down, he brings a smile to everyone’s face. He is always in a good mood. He has inspired me to always have a good attitude and to do the best I can at everything. I’m going to miss him when I go to Sandy Creek next year,” said Christian Alexander, team man-ager for the football team.

“He gets along with everyone and does everything right. He inspires me because he tries his hardest and always gives 100%,” said Elijah Holyfield.

“I think Parker is really cool. He makes me work harder, especially sprints because he always tries his hardest. He is the MVP of the team,” said Chandler Perkins.

“I think it’s really good he’s on the team. He loves making others laugh and he works really hard. He always has a positive attitude. He brings the best out in others. When we’re having a hard practice, we can look over and see Parker smiling,” said Dawson Riesselmann.

“Parker is the most enthusiastic player on the team. He’s al-ways in it and having fun and putting smiles on other people’s faces. He’s been really fun to play with. It’s been fun helping him out. We give him high fives in the hallway. He has taught me that anyone can be on the football team and he is very inspiring. It taught me it’s not hard to get close to someone that has special needs. I like helping him out when he’s on the field and making sure he’s okay,” said Chance Brown.

One student, Dominic Reed, told me about how the team watches out for Parker. When a player from the opposing team is coming at him to tackle him, someone will jump in and tackle them before they get to Parker. “I saw Garrett coming towards Parker so I thought I should keep him away from him so he wouldn’t hurt him and I did that. Normally I help Parker when he goes in. He goes in from half time toward the end of the game. I love Parker on the team. He is hilarious, especially when we watch films. When I see Parker come on the field he brightens my day and makes me want to try harder,” said Dominic.

“At first I thought it

would be good for him, but it turned out he was blessing

for us.”

Parker was one of the Captains at a game

Page 16: Nov 2011_Fayette (Ga) Game Day

Coach Jody Travis agreed, “Parker likes being part of the team. He brings unity to the team because they want to take care of him and each other. When they show compassion it makes them closer.”

Coach Ross added, “He is a character and makes the kids laugh, reducing tension. His fitness level in PE has increased a lot. We put him in the game during kick offs. The guys cheered for him and loved seeing him on the field. We love having him on the team.”

Parker has really enjoyed being part of the team. “I like my friends. I liked being the captain. I like the food at the games. I like being with my friends at the games. Coach Travis asked me to be on the team and on Fridays he buys me slushies if I do really good. Coach Travis tells me to hustle. I like the coaches,” said Parker.

2011 Middle School Football Champions

His parents have seen the impact that being part of this team has had on Parker. “I’ve seen changes in Parker since he’s been on the team. I haven’t seen any tantrums and he has shown maturity. They don’t allow him to not try on his own. We think the team has been good therapy,” said Vickie.

Wilvor agreed and added, “I have been amazed to see how he is treated on the team. I expect that in the boy scouts, because that is what we teach. These athletes are doing what we’re teaching in boy scouts and they’re doing it on their own. The parent’s here are great. It’s been uplifting because I give a lot of time to the scouts and Coach Travis is doing that for me with Parker.”

As Wilvor mentioned, the parents have supported Parker the entire season. One parent, Michelle Perkins, who is also the team photographer, said, “He’s been a huge blessing to the team and brings out the best in people. We all want to be treat-ed equal despite disabilities or lack of ability. It’s encouraging to see these young men having compassion and to love everyone despite what they might have difficulties with. He is my favorite buddy on the team. He keeps me in stitches.”

This cohesive “family” of football players has had a magical season. They went undefeated in the regular season and won the Middle School Football Championship. I was told after the big victory the team went to HJ Wings and Things to celebrate and Parker was the star of the evening. He sat in the middle of the group of players and beamed with pride at being part of this group. And yes, they won on the field, but they also won so much more from this season because a special young man made an impact on them that will last long after the season is over.

L-R Coach Travis, Parker, Coach Ross

I heard similar comments from the coaches. Flat Rock head football coach, Coach Ross, said, “At first I thought it would be good for him, but it turned out he was blessing for us. To see him open up and relate to the kids, well it’s as close to family as we’ve had on the team. The kids take care of him. Watching the kids get so excited when he practices and plays has been an encouragement to us. What I’m most taken by is how our kids relate to him. I’ve seen other kids blossom from him being on the team, bringing out the characteristics that will help them long after football. We never told the kids what to do, they just did it. It was genuine. It’s been a special season this year. It’s been fantastic.”

Brain Balance TestimonyGoing from ball field to ball field is part of our family weekends as our son Jaylen is gifted in athletics. He loves sports and plays well at a variety of sports. He shines on the field and we love to see him excel! We have always been excited about his athletic future, but at the same time, we have been very fearful about his academic future related to college. Jaylen has always struggled in school. He has been in EIP classes for many years and has dif-ficulty in processing information. His handwriting has been a struggle and learning how to read has been a bear! We have educators throughout our family, and so Jaylen has ALWAYS had extra support at home, but even with the “extras” and tutors nothing was coming easier! I knew I had to find some help...beyond just a tutor.

I began researching programs online and found Brain Balance Achievement Center. I came to one of their free informational seminars and the program really made sense!! I realized that Jaylen struggled with learn-ing because he had underdevelopments in the brain which was causing an imbalance. Through Brain Balance’s testing, we learned that Jaylen had underdevelopments in the left hemisphere of the brain. He was gifted with the right hemisphere which is responsible for gross motor skills, timing and rhythm, understanding the big picture and social skills! His left hemisphere however, was underdeveloped which was responsible for visual processing, au-ditory processing, memory, oral communication, Word Reading, Phonics, Numerical Operations, and fine motor!

Brain Balance developed an individualized plan to functionally correct the underdevelopments found in the brain. Through sensory motor, cognitive exercises, and nutrition Jaylen has gone from making F’s in school to being an A, B student! We are so proud of him! He is processing concepts quicker which overall has helped him academically and ALSO has improved his game on the field which was an added bonus! We are so excited to know that our son has unlimited potential!! ...S. B. (proud mom)

Ryan Gloer is the Fayette County Campus Director for Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

A Word from GloerThanksgiving

“Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful singing. Know that the Lord Himself is God; it is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people and the sheep of His pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise. Give Thanks to Him, bless His

name. For the Lord is good; His loving kindness is everlasting and His faithfulness to all generations.” [Psalm 100:1-5]

With Thanksgiving just a few weeks away, I am reminded of a passage from the book of Psalm that emphasizes the importance of God’s people to exalt, bless, praise, and worship Him with joy. This time of year usually brings two things to mind – turkey and football. Although feasting and tossing pigskin will quickly raise the adrenaline level, I pray we also take time to realize the abundance of what we have in Jesus Christ and in return share that with others.

In the beginning of Psalm 100, we are commanded to shout joyfully to the Lord as the psalmist calls for all of the earth to give Him praise. As the people of God, the church has been commissioned to take the Good News of Jesus Christ to the ends of the earth. It was Israel’s responsibility to introduce the Gentiles to the God of heaven; the charge to make His name known is also extended to each of us. Beyond our joyful shouting, we are instructed to serve Him with gladness. When we learn to take pleasure in obeying the Father, we will begin to serve Him with delight and sincerity rather than out of obligation.

In verse three, it says that we are to ‘know that the Lord is God.’ The word “know” literally means to “know by experience”. That in itself is something to be thank-ful for. We can know and experience the God of the universe in an individual and unique way. The same Lord who made the heavens, all of the starry host, the earth and all that is on it, and the seas and all that is in them wants to know us intimately. My friends, if you have an authentic relationship with Jesus then you have an incredible story to tell. What we have experienced in our lives through the supremacy of Jesus should overflow in praise and declaration!

By the time we reach verses four and five, the worshipers erupt into songs of praise and thanksgiving because of the faithfulness, compassion, and goodness of the Lord Most High. If we are truly controlled by the power of the Holy Spirit and by the living and active Word of God, it will become clear to others by the way we worship Him in our lives. Our thankfulness should be a by product of His goodness. When we personally ‘taste and see that the Lord is good,’ as it says in Psalm 34:8, we discover how infinitely blessed we are. Experiencing the transfor-mational power of Jesus in our lives should compel us to testify to the world that Jesus lives. An attitude of praise and thanksgiving will develop as we meditate on the glorious work that the Lord has done with us.

Do the people around you hear you talk about what Jesus is doing in your life? Have you taken time lately to stop and thank the Lord for what He has done and for what He is going to do? A spirit that is thankful is one that will be victorious. A spirit of thanksgiving will empower us to conquer attitudes of in-gratitude. “Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving…” [Psalm 147:7].

Some middle school boys focus on getting to the next video game level or on learning new basketball dribbling tricks, but Bennett’s Mill Middle School 7th grader Adam Koenig has a different hobby in mind.

Along with playing basketball and football, Adam has been reading sports fact books like The Official NFL Record and Fact Book (2009 and 2011 versions) and other sport encyclopedias nearly every day for the past couple of years. He’s able to remember football facts dat-ing back to 1950. He can even remember many records and facts about basketball and baseball history. “He just loves sports,” said Karen Koenig, Adam’s mother. “He has a photographic memory that allows him to remember all of the stats.”

Adams older brother by two years, Michael, is impressed by his brother’s ability to know sports facts. “It’s incredible,” Michael said. “Ask him a jersey number of any NFL football player, and he’ll tell you…even ones that

played in the 1970’s.” At the age of nine, Adam received his nickname “Stats” from his football coach because he could recall information about a 1920’s game. The nickname has stuck ever since.

Stats’s father, Michael, had his own cable show and was a high school announcer for all football and basketball games in Dearborn, Michigan. Inspired by his father, Stats put his statistical knowledge to the test during his fifth grade year at Springhill Elementary. He tried out to be part of the morning announcements. “I had to audition so I was nervous and excited at the same time,” Stats said. “My dad helped me practice.”

Out of forty-four kids that auditioned, Stats was one of the twenty who received a spot. He got the sports seg-ment part every Monday morning, announcing sports teams from local to professional. “I talked about college and NFL football. I switched to NBA games once football season ended,” Stats said. He would keep Spring Hill Elementary up-to-date with all of the NFL and NBA game news.

“The media specialist [at Spring Hill Elementary] said that she had never seen anyone like him,” Karen said. “The kids couldn’t wait until Monday morning to listen to him. He was such a natu-ral. He doesn’t even need to read the prompter.”

This past school year Stats’s brother Michael was the director of BMMS Bronco News, and Stats auditioned. Stats continued what he started in fifth grade by doing “Stats Koenig” Monday Morning Sports as a sixth grader.

Bennett’s Mill principal Presley King saw what a great job Stats was doing in Bronco News and asked him to announce one Bronco football game in the fall of 2010. “During the game, a parent asked [King], ‘Who is the new parent announcing at the football games?’ From that point on, Adam was asked to do all the football, basketball, and lacrosse games,” Karen said. Stats is the first football student announcer at Bennett’s Mill.During the games, Stats announces the starting line-up, de-fensive and offensive plays, updates on the concession stand, scores, and more. “Adam’s very colorful when announcing. He’ll use ‘mouth watering’ and ‘Oh so cheesy nachos’ and gives an enthusiastic TOUCHDOWN!” Karen said. “Adam has a gift for being in front of the microphone.”

Now, Stats plays football in the fall, but he regularly announces Bronco basketball as well as lacrosse games in the spring. As a seventh grader, he is still an announcer of the Bronco News and helps with sound and lighting from time to time. Stats’s younger brother Nicholas announces and does sound as well. “I’m doing the news because of Adam,” Nicholas said. “My brother is very dedicated and focused on what he has to do. He makes the news fun to watch. I try to make sure I’m passionate about the news just like him.”

“It’s an interesting fit. He loves sports, and he just loves to announce,” Karen said. “Face-to-face, he’s not a big talker. It’s surprising to see him on the news, being all bubbly. He comes out of his shell on camera and screen. It gives him a sense of confidence; it boosts his self-esteem.”

This upcoming summer, Stats hopes to attend the over-night “Play by Play Sports Broadcasting Camp” held at Emory University. There he will be able to learn about broadcasting, announcing, and radio from famous and influential people in the field like NBC Nightly News Brian Williams. “He will be thirteen years old so he will be one of the youngest there. He will learn and experience so much more,” Karen said.

Inspired by ESPN anchor of Monday Night Countdown “Chris” Berman and other sports announcers, Stats hopes to participate in news and announcing in high school and possibly college if there is an opportunity. “I may want to be an ESPN newscaster,” he said. “I love talking about sports.”

For others interested in announcing, Stats has some advice. “You have to try hard and want it,” he said. “You need to be entertaining and have lots of excitement and passion for the sport you’re announcing, and you should understand the sport by playing it. If people listen to you and are passionate after listening to you, you’ve done your job.”

Miles Head’s baseball career has been on the upswing ever since he graduated from Whitewater High School in 2009. Miles has been through many tough practices, hard games, and tournaments to make it to where he is today. He has been playing baseball since he was very young and has always known that he has wanted to play pro baseball. “I missed all the proms and birthday parties because I was gone every weekend, but I knew I had to. It taught me to persevere,” Miles said about his dreams. In the past Miles has played for multiple travel teams as well as playing for the Whitewater Wildcats throughout high school. Playing for these teams enabled Miles to build up his strength and skills. “My baseball coach for the Fayette Muddogs, Greg Hirschfeld, taught me all I need to know about baseball,” Miles said. “I was more prepared for high school, travel, and pro ball because he

taught us all the aspects, from running bases, to cutting off men in the outfield - I was mentally smart about the game, and I thank him for that.” In 2009 Miles was drafted to the Boston Red Sox, he changed his original plans of playing baseball at the University of Georgia and headed to Fort Myers to play baseball. Playing professional baseball has not been an easy feat, there have been many challenges along the way. When he started playing for the Lowell Spinners they moved Miles from his normal position of third base to first base, which he had not played since he was ten years old. He adjusted over time

and this ultimately ended up being a great move for his baseball career. It has also take time for Miles to adjust to being away from home. His schedule has been rigorous and there’s not much time off from the sport for Miles to enjoy himself. “I probably only sat out 3-4 games the whole year and that was just to rest,” Miles said. “I think I had 495 at-bats, the most in the entire Sox minor system. It will wear you out, you gotta be in shape.” Staying in shape and conditioning in the off-season has allowed Miles to stay injury free as well as being in the best shape for his games. He played well for the low-A Greenville Drive this past season and was able to make the South Atlantic League All-Stars. After which he was promoted to the high-A Salem Red Sox. Miles’ advice for younger players is to, “play as much as you can, on the best team you can, and put yourself out there for people to see you play.” Miles’ baseball career is only beginning and he most looks up to his parents for helping him financially and mentally through this whole process.

What’s Your Ark?

by Lindsey Wilckens

Lindsey Wilckens is the Campus Direc-tor for FCA Fayette County

[email protected]

“Noah did everything just as God commanded him.”[Genesis 6:22]

Sometimes when I read the stories of people in the Bible, I have to ask myself, “How did they do it?” Most recently I have

been coming back to the story of Noah and the Ark. Aside from Adam and Eve, Noah is probably

one of the most well-recognized characters in the Bible. I’m willing to bet that even people who didn’t grow up in church could give you the basic outline of his life. God told Noah to build the ark, it was really big, the animals came two by two, it rained for forty days and forty nights, and then they lived happily ever after. While that is, for the most part, the way the story goes, I think there are a few more details that we tend to forget.

For starters, have you ever stopped to think about exactly what it is God asked Noah to do? When Noah was 500 years old (that’s REALLY old!), God gave him the blue prints for a boat that was one and a half football fields long, half a football field wide, and fifteen yards tall (that’s a REALLY big boat!). Then he told him that he had 120 years to get the job done. Now, in this day and age, that would be a piece of cake. With Home Depot right around the corner, a crew of able bodied workers, and a full arsenal of power tools, we might be able to knock that job out in a few months. That wasn’t the case for Noah. Not only was he an old man, but he only had his three sons to help him out, and on top of that, there was not a drop of rain to be seen for years. Now I don’t know about you, but if I was Noah’s neighbor and I saw what he was up to, I would have thought that he had lost his mind. But Noah didn’t care what other people said or thought. He was committed to obeying what God had called him to do even though it seemed as though the odds were stacked against him in every way.

I don’t think God is going to ask any of us to build a giant boat anytime soon, but as Christians we all have arks of our own. We are all called to do things that may seem crazy or counter intui-tive to those who don’t follow Christ. I’m sure that when Noah was building the ark, there were some days when the boards seemed a lot heavier than others. But he understood that the consequences of disobeying what God had called him to do were going to be much more difficult than trusting that God had a reason for giving him the instructions that He did. We may not always understand why God calls us to love one another, or why he calls us live lives of purity, and the world may tell us that we have lost our minds, but what we have to understand is that God sees the bigger picture…He sees the flood that is coming and He wants to protect those who love and follow him from the storm.
