KQED in the Community

Kick off the holiday season by giving back to the community at the annual Applied Materials Silicon Valley Turkey Trot, a celebration of fitness and generosity that’s a fun and meaningful experience for the whole family.

The Turkey Trot was founded with a mission to support Silicon Valley charities. This year’s local beneficiaries — Healthier Kids Foundation Santa Clara County, Housing Trust Silicon Valley, Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara, San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties, and The Health Trust — are all dedicated to providing families with health, hope and a home.

KQED is proud to be a sponsor of the 41st annual American Indian Film Festival, November 4–12 in San Francisco.

The nation’s most prestigious venue for American Indian film arts and entertainment is also the world’s longest-running exposition showcasing independent films of U.S. American Indians and First Nations peoples of Canada.

To accompany the television broadcast of Soundbreaking, the KQED Arts editorial team is creating an online series about Bay Area recording studios and the region’s contributions to the history of recorded music. The ongoing series, Into the Mix, will feature stories about influential Bay Area recording studios, including San Francisco’s former Wally Heider Studios and the Record Plant in Sausalito, and newer facilities such as Women’s Audio Mission in San Francisco and Greaseland Studios in San Jose. It will also document notable moments in music history, like the time a 1973 Pink Floyd performance aired on KQED 9. Expect the first stories in late October and early November.

The new eight-episode television series Soundbreaking: Stories From the Cutting Edge of Recorded Music explores the extraordinary impact of recorded music on the modern world. The series combines unprecedented access to some of the most celebrated artists, producers and innovators from across the music spectrum, with rare archival studio footage and an extensive soundtrack, to deliver one of the most wide-ranging programs on the art of music recording.

Soundbreaking moves between the past and present to tell the stories behind the sounds. Through the stories it reveals how innovation redefined not only what we listen to and how we listen to it, but also our very sense of what music is and can be. Produced in association with the late award-winning producer and Grammy winner Sir George Martin, the series features more than 150 artists sharing behind-the-scenes stories in a

Soundbeaking airs at 10pm, November 14–18 and 21–23 on KQED 9. Watch all episodes back-to-back on Thursday, November 24, from noon to 8pm, on KQED Plus.

music-driven celebration of the art of recording. “Music is the only common thread and universal language that binds us together regardless of race, nationality, age or income. And recorded music is how we experience it and what makes it accessible,” Martin said of the project prior to his passing, adding “Soundbreaking afforded me the opportunity to tell the story of the creative process of so many of the artists I have worked with throughout my life.”

Support for KQED’s presentation of Soundbreaking is made possible by Sutter Health CPMC 2020, Xfinity, Blue Bear School of Music, Berkeley Stereo and Berkeley Research Group, LLC.

Join us on Wednesday, November 2, at The Independent in San Francisco for KQED’s Soundbreaking Showcase —a sneak preview and panel discussion with the filmmaker, plus live music. For tickets and more info, visit KQED.org/events.

If you want to truly understand San Francisco’s Chinatown, it helps to walk the streets with Norman Fong, who grew up there. That’s what the new, location-based KQED/Detour audio tour does, taking you into the heart of one of the city’s most dense and historic areas. Fong tells how he came of age in a working-class family, wrestling with trying to be both Chinese and American. He walks you through back alleys and into historic homes to trace his family’s history in Chinatown — even when that history is painful. You experience his fear in a face-off with a gang and hear about the ghosts of women who were forced to become sex workers in the early 1900s.

Bay Area Life

Fong takes you to Chinese-run mom-and-pop grocers to give tips on how to cook cheaply with the local ingredients and invites you to order up a special energy (qi) soup from a local ginseng purveyor. Along the way, walk in Fong’s shoes as he embraces his Chinese heritage and stands up for the rights of new immigrants and seniors living in single-room-occupancy hotels. Fong’s love for one of the most culturally rich neighborhoods in San Francisco is so intense, you won’t be left untouched. The Chinatown tour (coming soon) is one of three guided walks produced in partnership with KQED. See the full list on Detour’s website.

California greatly. Every day I’m allowed to help tell stories from the state and to bring up issues that perhaps might not be told elsewhere. That’s a really big responsibility. I’m up for the challenges.

What are the challenges?Well, the first is time. I wish I had more time. The show is seven and a half minutes long. Trying to decide what stays in a story and what doesn’t is the professional equivalent of trying to decide which child you like better. I have to “pick children” really, really quickly, early in the morning. The second challenge, and the reason I want more time, is that there are so many interesting characters, stories and narratives in California. Then, on top of that, there are really complex issues to cover. It’s been challenging to figure out how to distill all that down and best tell it in seven and a half minutes.

What’s your vision for your role as The California Report host?Well, one thing that must be recognized is that this is the house that Scott Shafer and Ingrid Becker built. Very early on in my career, I worked as the morning host at KAZU in Monterey, and I remember Scott coming on live and that there was a feeling that if he was saying it, it was important. I want to find a way to keep that feeling going. And if we continue this house metaphor through, we must acknowledge that this house was built largely on policy and politics. I love policy and politics. I also love the arts. And tech. I’m a tech nerd, and I think that we have an obligation, given that big changes in humanity are probably going to come through Silicon Valley, to enhance our coverage there.

News

John Sepulvado: Morning Host of The California Report

This summer brought a new voice to KQED Public Radio’s The California Report. John Sepulvado joined KQED from Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB), where he’d been the local host and executive producer of the flagship NPR weekend news program Weekend Edition. One month in, John sat down to answer some questions and give a lesson on mixing metaphors.

What attracted you to KQED? Your gig at OPB was pretty—It was plum.

Was it that KQED is a much bigger station, with a bigger audience, or was it something more than that? I think the hiring of News Managing Editor Ethan Lindsey really made me look at KQED. Also Executive Editor Holly Kernan. And I want to make it clear, I don’t suck up to my bosses, but Holly is someone who, when you look at what she did at KALW and you look at the staffing resources and the budget resources, you think, “How do I not want to be part of this?” I love Portland. I love Oregon. It was a really difficult decision, but I’m a native Californian. This feels like home in a way that, Portland, as much as I love it, didn’t. Not only that, I care about

There are a lot of other stories that don’t necessarily have to do with straight policy, but that are incredibly important threads in the quilt that is California.

Right. So, you have about six metaphors there you can choose from, but to get back to my original point, I want to see how we can add these other things without losing the policy and the politics that people have come to rely on. We’re looking toward that.

Is there a recent KQED story that’s stuck with you?I think the story that really shows the power of KQED, encapsulates why it’s important to be a member of KQED and why it’s important that members’ contributions help employ really talented journalists and strong editorial leadership, is the Rape on the Night Shift series. It really opened my eyes to both the necessity and the promise of our reporting. I don’t have something of mine to talk about, and I’m fine with that. Right now I’m looking at my colleagues and thinking, “Holy heck, I’d better up my game.”

It’s like if you’re playing a sport with people who are more experienced or better than you are, you have to step it up or you’re not going to play.Yeah. You’re going to sit on the bench. I’m not about to sit on the bench, in this house, under a quilt that is California.

The California Report airs weekday mornings on KQED 88.5 FM. Its 30-minute weekly newsmagazine, hosted by Sasha Khokha, airs Fridays at 4:30pm, 6:30pm and 11:30pm.

For a pre-KQED story about the impact of the drought on farmworkers, she accompanied a crew of grape pickers into the fields, spent days knocking on doors, and even camped out overnight in a Wal-Mart parking lot. After almost a decade in Oakland, Vanessa said she was “looking forward to trading in my comfy Berkeley Bowl life for some reporting adventure.” A Modesto native, Vanessa’s new role is a homecoming of sorts. As a teenager, she says, she couldn’t wait to make a break for the Bay Area. But when she took a reporter’s lens to the Central Valley, she saw the incredible storytelling potential there. When asked if there is a particular issue that she’s passionate about covering, she responded, “I’ve always gravitated toward immigration, rural health and agricultural issues — probably because I grew up here!” Over the past couple of

This summer, Vanessa Rancano joined KQED as The California Report’s Central Valley reporter, based in Fresno. Described by a colleague as having “a gift for telling stories through sound and a keen eye for finding stories off the beaten path,” Vanessa is also tenacious about gaining access to her sources.

The World’s Most Expensive Food is a delightful two-part British series that follows several renowned food purveyors who cater to the nouveaux riches. From supplying the world’s best caviar to creating decadent meals for private jet patrons, these luxury vendors will go to any length to source, import and prepare the world’s most expensive food and drink for their clients. In this rarefied world, the finest ingredients just aren’t enough: it’s the story behind them that counts.

A new adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s classic novel tells the story of Anne Shirley, a precocious orphan placed in the care of uptight Marilla Cuthbert and her brother Matthew, played by acclaimed actor Martin Sheen. Neither the adventurous Anne nor the conservative Marilla could anticipate the profound effect they’d have on each other’s lives.

Anne of Green Gables airs Thursday, November 24, at 8pm on KQED 9.
