ATHLETICS DAY Congratulations to all our participants last Wednesday. The following students qualified for the North cluster athletics event held yesterday at Bethlehem College. Congratulations to Tamara and Bernadette who both got 1st at Shot Put and Ngaere who got 3rd at quoits at Bethlehem yesterday. They now go onto the Western Bay of Plenty fi-nals in Tauranga next week. Good luck!

Kia ora Assembly is always a great time of celebration. Firstly our tamariki enjoy sharing their class work with you and secondly there are always lots of individuals to recognize. This week three children were celebrated for meeting their learning goals, further children have met these and will be recognized this week. Briar shared the 105 Waihi East School athletics certificates with our attendees and 3 children were awarded certificates for meeting their learning goals. Fantastic! Other certificates were presented to our rippa guys. Over 300 names went into the draw after selling chocolates for 2015 camp. Congratulations to the Spicer whanau who won the bike . Particular mention to the Taylor whanau who sold 5 boxes of chocolates, now that’s a wahoo moment! Well done to you all. Assembly is on again this week at 1.40pm. Rooms 1,3 and 7 will present. Come along and join in the celebration. Our Make a Difference (MAD Team) has joined forces with our Roopu group to formulate one group. Although each group has a different mission and finances will be separate, a team effort is required. We welcome this rebranded group Team East Whanau to our school. Their next activity is our Christmas Party. As you know this will be a fundraiser for camp 2015. Please set aside Thursday 4th of November and come along and join in the fun. The night kicks off at 5pm with children singing at 5.15pm before tearing up the bike track with a waka bike fundraiser. Briar and I are starting to make up classes for 2015. Our year two bubble moves into year 3 next year and we are staffing accordingly. One major change is Sarah Cannel moving into the role of new entrant teacher. Sarah is an experienced primary school teacher and pre school teacher. We believe she will be an asset in this new role. This move will also support the leadership of the school as Briar has significant management responsibilities which require release from her classroom. We aim to share your child's next teacher and classroom before the end of the school year. Last week Briar and I had the pleasure of completing all Ministry of Education documentation for the 2014 school year. A progress against Charter goals, progress of data, variance report and Charter 2015 will be sent to the Ministry this week for approval. EAST SCHOOL CHRISTMAS PARTY Make sure to mark this date in your diary: Thursday December 4th, 5-7pm on our East School Field. We have items planned including performances from our Junior and Senior school students and a waka bike fundrais-er. There will also be lots of yummy kai for sale including:

COMMUNICATION with the BOARD of TRUSTEES A new email address ([email protected]) has been set up with the Board of Trustees Chairperson. If you have ideas, celebrations or tricky issues (grumbles) you would like the Board to address, please use this point of communication. Following a review of our complaints policy, if your complaint is with the Chairperson, your complaint will be dealt with by the Deputy Chairperson, currently Seton Frew. PIG BUCKET Every day we collect food scraps at school to feed our school poaka/pig. This poaka has had a very lean year with limited scraps going into the bucket. Due to this we will be having sausages at prizegiving this year and hope to fatten a pig next year. CHRISTMAS CHEER! A group of parents would like to bring Christmas Cheer into homes. We are collecting kai items to make into hampers and gifts to donate to whanau in our school community. If you would like to make a donation, please drop items into the school office. SANITARIUM WEET-BIX TRYATHLON 2014/2015 Registrations are now open. Events are in Rotorua on 7th De-cember 2014, Mt Maunganui on 11th January 2015 and in Hamilton 15th February 2015. All kids aged between 7 and 15 can enter. Each child receives a medal, t-shirt, kit bag, swim cap and a complimentary breakfast from the weet-bix breakfast tent plus the chance to win awesome spot prizes and meet their sporting heros. Last night my dad was going to feed our magpie. My

dad put the magpie on the ground. My dad went to get

the food for the magpie. My dad came back, he caught

the magpie and threw the magpie into the air and it

flew in the air and it flew in the paddock by our

house. The dog nearly got the magpie but it was on the other side of the

fence. My dad threw the magpie and it flew into the tree and my dad

couldn’t get the magpie but he did!

On Saturday I went to the birthday. It was good. I saw Ca-

sey at the birthday. We went for a walk. We went through

the bamboo cave.

In candy Floss world the trees are like lollipops and

clouds. The grass is bright bright green. The clouds are

clean. The humming fish jump and do a flip and hum

while they are in the air. The pond has swans swimming.

News from the Waihi East School Board of Trustees

The Leadership Team have worked extremely hard to complete paperwork for the

Ministry of Education reflecting on our year of teaching and learning. Documentation

includes:

Data print out of achievement.

Progress report against other years.

Variance Report. What we did, why we did it, reason for variances and outcomes.

Charter Development 2015.

Included in our documentation is our data. The Education Review Office this year have

said “…School data from the end of 2013 indicates that overall student achievement

levels, including those for Māori, have improved significantly since 2012 in reading and

mathematics. The proportion of students, including Māori and Pacific, achieving at or

above the National Standard in reading, writing and mathematics is now comparable to

national and regional averages”

The Board of Trustees believes it will be able to meet the Ministry of Educations

challenge of 85% of all children meeting or above National Standards by 2017.

Our final fixed term position for 2015 was appointed on the 19th November by the

appointment committee which comprised of a BOT member and Leadership staff. A

number of people applied for this position. After rigorous discussions, the appointment

of Nik Laing, an experienced reliever in the school was made. Sadly at this stage we are

unable to offer Ben Whatarau a position.

Briar and Emily expressed their appreciation of how staff have shared responsibilities

during Glen’s leave.

We are in the process of the Ministry of Education imposed electrical upgrade. They will

start this work in the weekends leading up to Christmas, completing the work no later

than a week before school opens.

Steven Whittaker, senior accountant from Education Services was on site to support the

Board develop the 2015 budget. This budget has been accepted in its draft form and will

be ratified after our roll return in March 2015. Significant savings have been made in

the draft budget allowing for additional money to be allocated as our school roll

increases over the year.

The audit of 2014 was very successful. Sharon Samson was recognised for her very

efficient administration. Our audit looks very positive. We have a number of

requirements including stock takes and asset register to undertake before the end of

the school year.

A number of areas have been addressed this month including vandalism of our school

slide. The Board appreciates the support of Ashby’s who are fixing the slide as a

donation to our school. Thanks also to Trudy for facilitating this.

The pool is ready to be opened however the water temperature is very cold and not

suitable for swimming at this stage. The Board have agreed to the following outcomes.

Pool keys will be available at no charge to our school whānau.

The pool will close at 7.30pm each evening.

The pool will be open during the holiday season when Mr Cowan is on site.

Parents will be asked to help lock the pool area at 7.30pm and to put the cover on.

Please return the form if you are able to help.

We have approached the Ministry of Education in regard to removing our enrolment

scheme. The Ministry of Education will be approaching all local schools in February for

their feedback about our enrolment scheme and be in touch with us after this process.

The Ministry has completed the recalculation of schools’ deciles using data from Census

2013. Waihi East School has changed from 3G to 3H which means we lose approximately

$10,000 funding over the next 3 years.

New Health and Safety legislation coming into effect in April 2015. The Board discussed

how this will impact on the school and additional insurances that will be required.

Two Policies have been reviewed and ratified. They are the Appointment Policy and

Complaints Against Staff members. This will be placed on our website for the community

to view. To support communication between the Board and the school community, a new

Board of Trustee email has been made. All emails will go directly to the Chairperson.

As a Board we welcome any grumbles and see them as a way of improving our school

practice. Please use this email to help meet your needs and improve outcomes for

This was the final Board meeting of the year. The Board welcomes all whānau to

prize giving on Friday 12th of December at 11am.
