Principals Page Towards the Year’s End

Many things in progress as the year rushes towards the end. End of the year production

practice is in full swing across the school. Thanks to Miles Spink who has returned to help

out and ‘fire up’ rehearsals, and thanks to many others for assisting with costumes, music,

learning of complex scripts and acting which the play involves. The play is called ‘Waiting for

Genghis’ and involves the trials and tribulations of a group of border guards, their families

and whoever may come their way. If the rehearsals are anything to go by there should be

lots of laughs.

This is a part of our awards night on 13th December, and staff are considering the awards for

students: We consider who are the students showing greatest progression in their learning,

as well as those that best exemplify the values of supporting others. The evening begins at

seven PM at the school.

This time of year is very busy too with finishing off our student and self evaluations. Overall

the school has improved in most measures and our direction for next year is quite logical to

decide.- As well as the continual growth in teaching practice, we will be working more and

developing students ability to ‘own their own learning ‘and building the skills and attributes

necessary for success in the changing world.

Next year we will be restructuring grade 3/6 so as to give more focus to reading and writing

in this area. We also welcome Patsy Killeen to the staff. Patsy will teach year 10/11 English

and Business management.

So many people to thank for the year. Megan and Jade in the office, who help ensure my

focus stays on teaching by being so effective with administration and connecting to the

community. Simon and Anthony who ensure the school is in a great state: the school is, and

looks, well loved. All teaching staff and aides who are always resourceful and motivated.

Liza who is the master of school logistics and driver of so many programs. The leadership

group of Liza, Pauline, Tracey, and Paul, who do much of the heavy lifting on policy and

organisation. Thanks to the school councillors: Tricia Whitford, the president , Kelly

Edebohls, Megan Whitford, ,Alison Rainey, Sarah Cochrane, Leah Norman, Christine Barker,

Liza Spink. It is hard to imagine a more positive and supportive group than this. Thanks to the

students: we are so lucky to have so many young individuals, with so many qualities.

Now I’m must prepare for play rehearsals!

STATES OF MATTER (AND THE STATES OF OUR HANDS)

Some people might think year 3 and 4 were just playing mudpies …... but actually we are

scientists. We are exploring the properties of solids, liquids and gases.

Non Newtonian fluids Informational precursor: a non-

Newtonian fluid is a liquid that flows nor-

mally when undisturbed but when there’s

a lot of velocity (like when you punch it),

it turns solid.

Written by William Pollock ………..Oobleck.

Add the corn-flour and H2O

Mix it well.

Add the dye .

You’ve made Oobleck

It is stringy when you

touch it and pull up slowly

and rock-hard when you punch it

There are some substances that are hard to classify. We have

been experimenting with different recipes to make Non-

Newtonian fluids and moulding substances.

Mallacoota Sports Day

Students from years 5—11 braved the weather and the bending roads to travel

to Mallacoota for a student led sports day to create more community

connections. Despite the grass being sodden after receiving two days of

continuous rain, and the dark clouds threatening to dump more at any

moment, the students trod on through, determined to enjoy their afternoon of

rec footy and basketball. Basketball was played inside the hall, providing

shelter for everyone, and was run simultaneously so there was plenty for

students to be doing at all times. Tammy sharply ran her footy clinic and put

the kids through their paces for a game, nearly losing her voice in the process!

A bbq lunch was provided to warm everyone ’s bellies and keep us fuelled.

Teams were made with a mix of students from both schools and it was nice to

witness the change from students feeling nervous and shy to joking around

and enjoying each other ’s company. The long goodbyes and endless hugs

between students was proof of a successful afternoon!

Thanks to Mallacoota P-12 for sharing a full filled afternoon, and to Simon

Berry for facilitating.

Tamboon Inlet

There was a family

heading down to

Tamboon they had a

holiday house there.

The only way to get

there was by boat.

When they arrived, they

were in shock because

there was nothing

there. They were

wondering what had

happened. Well, here is

what happened.

There once was a volcano at Tamboon. However, it exploded. Everyone evacuated. When it was

over, no one knew it was over because they had been evacuated. Then one day a family came

down and found that it was over.

They family had to build a shelter. Therefore, they did. They chopped trees, caught fish and all

of that.

Then they thought, “We should build houses for everyone”. Soon, one house became a village.

Then they were very proud of what they had achieved. Then more people rocked in.

Boats filled the lake and a sand dune formed along with a beach. More ships rolled in and then

the village was full. However, there was no room for others. So their family built more and more

houses. Nevertheless, because they were flat out, they did not sleep in their house. They would

cart a tent around.

When the village was full of houses, the family went back to their house. However, nothing was

feeling right. They went to sleep.

The next morning when they woke up, they figured out what the problem was. They had cut all

the trees down and the bushes. And because of that, the animals were dying. It was a BIG

problem. What was now a city (the old village) had a meeting and discussed what they should

do. The suggestions were:

Get rid of all the houses

All leave

Just keep it how it is

Half of them leave

After hearing all that, they decided to get rid of some houses.

Three months later, it all turned out and it was back to a village. They were now holiday houses.

That is how Tamboon became awesome. By Brooke

Our Island in the Clouds

First the dragons lived up in the clouds but then they evolved. They found the stairs to the Magical Faraway Tree House.

So they followed the stairs down to the ground where a village was. Then a dragon said, “Yummy, people.” Then the people were gone to live in the stomach of a dragon. They figured out that there were sea dragons down there. The dragons decided to eat all of the people but one. They didn’t know and neither did Tina (the girl who wasn’t eaten) that the volcano was about to erupt. But a dragon found it and warned them. “What do we do?” asked Tina.

“I have an idea,” said Dee Dee. We should knock down the old castle and get bigger bricks to stuff up the volcano and tumble down the stone stairs. They put the bricks in, “that will stop the Volcano form blowing,” said Tina. The volcano never blew again. Vines hung from the Faraway Tree. The dragons helped Tina make a swing form the Magical Faraway Tree. The village became very famous for the dragon’s kingdom had won against the volcano which had blown out too many dragon’s lives.

Tina had a family up in the tallest tower of the tallest window. But then one day a jewel was stolen which was the heart of the tree house and it started to go brown.

Everyone was worried about the tree. Then Tina said, “It could have been the Battle-axe dragon.” “Which is a blue dragon who is known for terrorising the land,” Twitch (the orange dragon).

Dee Dee had fought off the Battle –axe dragon. On the hill it heard them so then it came and they were friends.

Media Release Friday, 23 November 2018 | Media contact: Rachel Dawkins 0407 821 153

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Spring Firewood Collection season finishes soon

The Spring 2018 Firewood Collection Season will close across Victoria at the end of the

month.

Gippsland’s Acting Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Kelly Rash said: “From Friday the 30th of

November, all designated firewood collection areas will be closed over the summer period,

and it will be illegal for people to collect firewood on public land until the Autumn Firewood

Collection Season opening on the 1st March 2019.”

“Firewood collection may have already finished in some parts of the state where rainfall and

flooding has affected track conditions and made it unsafe to collect, or where supplies have

been exhausted,” Ms Rash said.

“We want to remind the public that firewood can only be taken from designated collection

areas in state forests or parks during the autumn and spring seasons and is for personal use

only and cannot be sold.

“It is important to stay within collection limits, which are in place to prevent households

stockpiling large volumes of firewood from public land and denying others a supply.

“Firewood is a shared public resource that provides a range of environmental values including

land protection, waterway health and habitats for native wildlife, and needs to be managed in

a sustainable way for the future.

“Fire prevention is one of the key reasons collection season closes prior to December each

year, while also allowing the shared public spaces to be used for a range of recreational

purposes over summer.

“Collection limits include taking a maximum of two cubic metres per person per day and a

maximum of 16 cubic metres per household per financial year.

“There are on-the-spot fines of $634 for illegal firewood collection behaviour, and if an offence

goes to court the person may be liable for fines up to $7928, one-year-imprisonment, or both.

“Forest Fire Management Victoria and Parks Victoria staff will be patrolling parks, forests and

reserves to make sure everyone does the right thing. Careful planning and collection rules are

enforced to protect the environment and habitat for native animals.”

Any information on the illegal removal of firewood from public land for sale can be reported to

DELWP on 136 186.
