Bell Tower The next phase of the bell tower work will take place within the next few weeks. The ringing floor is being reinstated and a new wooden screen erected to replace the curtain hung between the bell tower and the main church. The bells will not be able to be rung for several weeks while this work is carried out, but normal service will be resumed as soon as possible. The actual dates are not known at the time of going to press. Thank you for your understanding. VC.
Chideock W.I. Shirley welcomed members and visitors, wishing us all a good
2013. The last meeting in 2012 had been the successful Christmas lunch at the
George Inn. Great food and hospitality – we resolved to book for Christmas
2013!
Recently the Ferne Animal Sanctuary opened their 3rd shop, in Bridport. If we
had not already been to visit the shop and sanctuary our guest speaker Nannette
Wale, a Trustee for the charity set out to enthuse us. The idea behind ‘Ferne,’
dates back to the 1st World War when the Duchess of Hamilton, offered her
home, Ferne House near Shaftesbury as a sanctuary for local animals (Farm and
domestic) left behind when their owners went to serve. Many of whom did not
return. The present site is on 51 acres in the Blackdown Hills, overlooking the
river Yarty. Here a team of 30 (mostly part-time) and volunteers look after 300
+ animals. The main objective is to recuperate often badly traumatised or
injured animals and re-home or foster them. If this cannot be achieved for
whatever reason then they stay in the sanctuary for the rest of their lives.
Nannette introduced us to a series of sometimes sad and always endearing
animals who have passed through Ferne; Jasper, a dog left tied to the sanctuary
gate; Solo the neurotic Shetland pony; Chilli the oversize cow and Harriott the
cow with a skin complaint needing regular treatment with sunscreen; to the
many cats and kittens mistreated and abandoned. In the first quarter of 2012 of
the 95 cats brought to Ferne 83 were re-homed, a great record.
Visiting Ferne is a good day out for families with its walks around the fields,
ponds, paddocks and enclosures; its shop and tea room and a chance to meet
the many animals who have found a haven there. Many of us were prompted to
re-visit and others to discover it for ourselves.
After tea members discussed the two national WI resolutions (Concern for the
decline of our High Streets and Resolving to keep young people suicide-safe
online) and voted for their preference. A petition to support the national
resolution for an increase in the numbers of midwives was also signed by
members.
The wet mild weather brought a bumper set of entries to the flower of the
month competition, won by Diane Benjamin with Val Rivers in second place.
Val’s Owl won the main competition with Sue Petiffer’s Zebra in second place.
Thanks were given to Linda Gould and the craft team who took their craft
work to the Eype Makers’ Christmas market and made over £200.00.
Date of next meeting: 5th
February 2013, The Village Hall at 2.30pm.
Member Val Cowell will talk on ‘The Practical Uses of Aromatherapy’
New members and visitors are welcome
COMMUNITY POLICING … With the New Year now upon us and the possibility of cold weather coming, bear in mind the likelihood of ice on the roads.
Due to the many issues last year, I would like to remind persons regarding the amount of grit available to local villages; the local authorities now have suitable amounts to deal with the public roads. It is vital to note that this grit is for use on the roads and that to take this grit from the bins for personal use is theft. We are strongly advising that if you need grit, that you attend a local builders or agricultural merchants and buy a bag, which can be obtained for between £5 to £7. The local authorities have indicated they may prosecute “grit thieves”. Please think of vulnerable neighbours and consider gritting their driveways for them. Many people will be topping up their oil tanks. Dorset Police strongly advise that you protect your tanks. Your local safer neighbourhood team can advise you about the Stop That Oil scheme, which aims to prevent oil theft. Note that most crimes are preventable, if you know they are happening at the time they are happening, this is mainly achieved with the use of alarms.
Remember to report any suspicious activity/incidents on the new non-emergency number 101.
Happy new year from the Beaminster team. PCSO Paul MINERS Beaminster Safer Neighbourhood Team.
WELDMAR HOSPICECARE TRUST CHIDEOCK FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE
A big thank you to all who generously supported the Coffee morning to raise
funds for the Weldmar Hospice held at Appletree Thatch on 8th November.
I am pleased to report that we raised over £650.

CHIDEOCK PARISH COUNCIL NEWS …
SNOW AND ICE.
There are 4 grit bins (Ridwood, Seahill Lane by the Pettycrate junction, North
Road near Hollow Cottage and on the triangle of grass at the junction of Hell
Lane, Butt Lane and Brighthay Lane) which have been filled by Dorset
Highways. There are also 2 dumpy bags of salt / grit, one at Roadstead Farm,
the other at Silverbridge Farm.
Volunteers are needed who will, when necessary, to spread the grit. Please let
the Clerk know if you are willing to do this.
Please remember that this grit is only for use on public roads and footways, not
private drives, paths etc..
FLOOD EVENTS.
Reporting a Flood Event at your property, even if water didn’t enter the house
itself.
Dorset County Council has a duty to investigate and record details of
significant flood events within the county. A Flood Report form is available
online via webpage www.dorsetforyou.com/flooding, or from the Clerk.
DCC shares the information with the Environment Agency, West Dorset
District Council, Wessex Water, the two highways authorities and the
emergency services to assist them in the flooding response planning process and
the emergency response to flooding.
If you do send in a report then please let the Clerk have a copy so that the
Parish Council is aware of the issue.
If a flood event is not reported then neither DCC nor any of the other relevant
bodies will know about it and so cannot take it in to consideration.
Sandbags from West Dorset District Council.
West Dorset District Council will, in an emergency, provide sandbags free of
charge to homes that are at risk of flooding.
Chideock Parish Council News (continued)
They will only provide sandbags to protect the house and will not provide them
to protect garages (unless integral), sheds, gardens etc. They do not collect
sandbags after the event.
You can also, in an emergency, collect the sandbags from the WDDC depot
Dorchester, and possibly from the one in West Bay. WDDC only has limited
resources available and therefore cannot guarantee that they can get sandbags
to everybody that requests them during a flooding event.
To request sandbags ring 01305 252356 (in office hours) and 01305 251010
(out of hours).
Dorset County Council does not provide sandbags.
Making your own sandbags.
The bags and sand can be bought at stores such as Bradford’s, Bartlett’s etc.. If
you take empty bags to the West Bay WDDC Depot they may fill them for you.
In an emergency you can use alternatives such as pillow cases or refuse sacks
and fill them with garden soil.
Community Sandbag Store.
WDDC will provide sandbags for a community store. This is being investigated
by the Parish Council but before it can be taken further the following is
required:-
Volunteers willing to store 10 – 20 sandbags for use by nearby residents in case
of a flood event – they need to be kept dry so that they aren’t too heavy when
needed
The number of properties needing sand bag protection.
Please contact the Clerk if your property needs protection and / or you are
willing to store sandbags.
Flood and Surface Water Drainage Management Plan.
The Parish Council intends to work closely with Dorset County Council, the
Environment Agency and other bodies and local landowners, to draw up a
management plan to identify what can be done to improve the current situation.
This process was started last year with the Environment Agency and has
Chideock Parish Council News (continued)
continued this year with a detailed site visit by a DCC Flood Management
officer.
Householders can also play their part, by reporting flood incidents as detailed
above, and by making sure that any ditches, gullies, drains etc on their property
are clear and functioning correctly.
Blocked drains on the roads.
Problems with drains, gullies, ditches etc on side roads should be reported
either by phone to DorsetDirect (01305 221000) or on-line at
http://maps.dorsetforyou.com/highways/reportproblem/.
For the A35, e-mail Connect at [email protected]
or ring 01404 823381.
In either case, please let the Clerk know what has been reported, when and the
reference number given.
A Tale of Two Bell Towers Whitchurch has received a Heritage Lottery Fund 'All Our Stories' grant to make a video documentary about the recent restoration of the church bells in Chideock and Whitchuch. The two communities will be working together with Bridport-based Watershed PR to record the highs and lows of the bell work. The project aims to record the special meaning that the bells have to people in both communities and to show how they are intervoven with the heritage and history of the two villages. If you have a video or still photos of the recent restoration work on the bells please contact Val Cowell on 489 417.
