October has come and gone as well as a fantasticOktoberfest. Over 90 people came out to RanchoSeco to celebrate the founding of our Club. Wegathered around an epic fire ring, feasted onburgers and brats from Culinerdy, washed it downwith cold beer, and then slept it all off in a grassycampground. It was great with so many smilingpeople that lingered around the next morning forcoffee and pastries.
We honored Alan, Carol, and Chris with 50 yearplaques during the Members’ Meeting. Those thatdidn’t get honored during the Meeting are thepeople that have volunteered in various positionsthroughout the Club’s history. Many people haveserved through the years in various capacities:Board of Director positions, Chairs for all types ofthings, Newsletter Editors, Advertisingcoordinators, and just helping out whenever wecall for help. I apologize for not directlyrecognizing the efforts and contributionsof all that have served the Club. Thework everyone has put into the Clubmakes it what it is, and for that, thankyou.
I’d like to particularly thank the followingpeople for helping with Oktoberfest:Firewood: Andy and MikeDrink transportation: MikeRegistration: Barbara, Randy,April, and RaiFlyer: Wynne
Our website has undergone a hosting change withthe addition of a membership management piece.Everyone in the club now has the ability to visit theclub site and update your own contact information.Doing this is a step in the direction of reducing theeffort needed to keep our membership directorycurrent. Additional features will be added to thesite as JV continues his project.
Tom O’Connell has taken on the task of ‘49erChair for the 2016 Rally. The Board of Directorstasked Tom with increasing the attendance of the‘49er. With a relatively early start and afoundation in place from the previous rallies, Ibelieve 2016 will be a great event. We’ll haveseveral opportunities for volunteers to assist withthe planning and advertising of our Rally veryshortly. The Newsletter now has a new editor. John Ellis
has taken over the position from WarrenBarnes. As a reminder, we are
always looking for contentfor the Newsletter. If you’vebeen somewhere, atesomething, bought agadget, or done somethingfun or especially stupid, write a few lines about it
and send it to our editor.

I just wanted to let everyone know that Iaccidentally volunteered to take overNewsletter editor duties from WarrenBarnes. Warren has held many positions inthe club and has been responsible for thenewsletter for the last 5 years. Big thanks toWarren.
If you look closely you may notice thenewsletter format looks a little different thismonth. This is primarily because I havemoved to different publishing softwarecalled PagePlus. I did this to save licensingcharges but primarily because the newsoftware is easier to use and runs on a PC.The other advantage is that it is developedin England so the video tutorials areaccompanied by an female English voicethat sounds exactly like my daughter whenshe tries to imitate my accent.
I am aiming to keep the newsletter atsixteen pages every month. Clearly I willneed content and am reliant on membersfor their contributions; text and pictures. Ifyou send pictures, please add captions ifthe subject is not immediately obvious.Don’t forget if you have bike or parts forsale (or wanted) send it to me with a pictureor two.

It’s fall now and temperatures are dropping withthe days getting shorter so I think a review ofHypothermia is in order, as here in the GoldenState we ride all year around. As you may know, this is the loss of body heat to the environmentand lowering our core temperature. MotherNature has equipped us well to deal with coldclimates, but could never anticipate the wind blastform a moving motorcycle! That’s why our fingersand maybe feet too will get cold first.
Here’s what webmd.com has to say about it:Initial symptoms include intense shivering andteeth chattering. As body temperature falls
further, shivering stops and movements becomeslow and clumsy, reaction time is longer, thinkingis blurred, and judgment is impaired. Not good! Here’s a handy “Chill Chart” just for us riders.Note that even at 45* and 60 MPH it will feel 32*to exposed dry skin. Being wet will make it evenworse!Layering garments under our riding suits workswell to insulate us and electric heated clothing isavailable too. So dress appropriately and keepwarm. Ride Safe!

Still glowing from Oktoberfest? Great location, food and volunteerteamwork made the Oktoberfest 2015 one to remember!
No significant events on the financial side. The BOD is working withTom Connolly, our 2016 49'er Rally Chair, to develop the budget and theunderlying list of activities for the event. Our state and federal taxesneed to be filed prior to November 15th (ugh...)
Russ Drake graciously volunteered to publish the club directory for 2016and we download all the member data from the new club website.Speaking of which, we cut over to Wild Apricot, a non-profit membershipsoftware application, on November 1st. The first release of our webpage looks familiar but with added features such as member logon, access to confidential club documents (meeting minutes and financialrecords), member directory, view purchase and payment history andmore! Initially it’s a bit of work, but in the long term it will simplify keepingtrack of membership and organization of events. I would encourage youall to log in and check it out.
Buddy Scauzzo (Advertising Chair) has offered to update the bannerphotos more frequently. Ed Perry (Historian) and Rick Klain arecollaborating to bring to life the club history on our site with lots ofphotos, videos and old documents.
If you are interested in helping with the website this is a great time to getyour hand up! If you have questions about the club finances shoot mean email at [email protected] and wherever you ride, think safe!

It’s axiomatic that nothing brings a crowd like freebeer, and the Oktoberfest that Dan put togetheron October 24 proved it’s still true. Or it couldhave been the great catering, huge campground, the big fire pit with hardwood cut by MikeHuntzinger and hauled by Andy Anderson… I’mpretty sure most of the 91 (!) attendees had agood time.
After securing the Rancho Seco site 6 monthsahead, I planned a tour that included a stop atClearwater Lights, whose bright spots and FreeLunch (at their open house) seem popular withour riders. The route started up Highway 160from the Railroad Café in Livermore with 18riders, the redoubtable John Ellis riding sweep.Hwy 160 was single-lane at Threemile Slough, but my circumnavigation of Sherman Island paidoff by putting us at the head of the line where acooperative CHP unit and a friendly flagger (Ithink they all ride) put us on our way. We stayedat Clearwater until the raffle proved a Norcalbust, then took a loop through Gold Country thatcarefully avoided the great roads that Russ usedlast month, coming to camp via Shingle Springs,Plymouth and Ione. Highlight: Salmon Falls Rd.
Our next, December 5, tour will be to PlaskettCreek, on the coast between Big Sur and SanSimeon, with Joyce Samson conducting while Icruise the QM2 to England (cheap in winter.)
There has been a change in the Januarycampout. The site we had planned for at
Laguna Seca will be closed for the offseason, and the staff there decided
(they didn’t mention it before) that only2 bikes can park on a 32-foot RV pad.
The Jan 30 meeting is moved toArroyo Seco, site of the ’13 freeze
out. As Arlo said, I was “runnin’ out oftime.”
February 27 is Fremont Peak, March 26 (25-27)is Furnace Creek, April 23 is Orland Buttes atBlack Butte Lake (named after a favorite beer,NOT in Lassen.) The June 25 Annual (election)meeting is TBA, but probably at ManchesterKOA.
Enjoy the ride!

In 1966, SMUD purchased 2,100 acres insoutheast Sacramento County for a nuclearpower plant, which was built in Herald, 25 milessoutheast of downtown Sacramento.
In the early 1970s, a small pond was expandedto a 160-acre lake to serve as an emergencybackup water supply for the station. The lakehas always received its water from the FolsomSouth Canal and has no relationship with thepower plant's daily water supply. Surroundingthe lake is 400 acres of recreational areaoriginally operated by the County ofSacramento for day-use activities.
The 2,772 MWt pressurized water reactorachieved initial criticality on 16 September 1974and entered commercial operation on 17 April1975.
On 20 March 1978 a failure of power supply forthe plant's non-nuclear instrumentation systemled to steam generator dry out. In an ongoingstudy of "precursors" that could lead to anuclear disaster if additional failures were tohave occurred, in 2005 the United States
Nuclear Regulatory Commission concluded thatthis event at Rancho Seco was the third mostserious safety-related occurrence in the UnitedStates (Behind the Three Mile Island accidentand the cable tray fire at Browns Ferry).
The plant operated from April 1975 to June1989 but had a lifetime capacity average of only39%; it was closed by public vote on 7 June1989 (despite the fact that its operating licensedid not expire until 11 October 2008) aftermultiple referenda.
Operation of the recreational area wasassumed by SMUD in 1992. In cooperation withthe Nature Conservancy, SMUD dedicated inJune 2006 the Howard Ranch Nature Trail, aseven-mile long trail that follows riparian andmarsh habitat along Rancho Seco Lake and theadjoining Howard Ranch that once belonged tothe owner of the famous racehorse Seabiscuit. All power generating equipment has beenremoved from the plant and the now-emptycooling towers remain a prominent part of thelocal landscape. Also scattered throughout thearea around the plant are abandoned air raid

Crown Prince Ludwig, later to become KingLudwig I, was married to Princess Therese ofSaxe-Hildburghausen on October 12, 1810. Thecitizens of Munich were invited to attend thefestivities held on the fields in front of the citygates to celebrate the happy Royal event. Thefields were named Theresienwiese (“Theresa'smeadow") in honor of the Crown Princess, andhave kept that name ever since, although thelocals have since abbreviated the name simply to
the "Wiesn". To end the celebrations from theroyal wedding on October 17, horse races wereheld in honor of the newlyweds. It is reported thatthe origins of the horse races and Oktoberfestitself were proposals from a coachman, andsergeant in the National Guard, FranzBaumgartner. However, these origins of thefestival are controversial. The decision to repeatthe horse races in the subsequent year gaverise to the tradition of the Oktoberfest.

sirens that at one time would have warnedpeople of a radioactivity release from the station.
Additions to SMUD's Rancho Seco property haveincluded massive solar installations and, morerecently, the natural gas-fired Cosumnes PowerPlant, brought online in 2006.
On 23 October 2009, the Nuclear RegulatoryCommission released the majority of the site forunrestricted public use, while approximately 11acres of land including a storage building for low-level radioactive waste and a dry-cask spent fuelstorage facility remain under NRC licenses.
