NOVA Victim Assistance Academy
• NOVA launched the NOVA Victim Assistance Academy
(NVAA) in January 2013
– Consistent with NOVA’s larger mission to support the
professional development of victim advocates
– Growing recognition of need for skill-based victim
advocacy training in distance learning environment
– Over 425 NVAA graduates to date; NVAA alumni are
50% military and 50% civilian advocates

Training Overview
• NOVA Victim Assistance Academy (NVAA)
– Mission: Provide high quality, skill-building core victim
advocacy training through a distance learning platform
• NVAA is a 9-week, 40-hour commitment
– Blended learning program
– 4 hours of “live” training each week (36 hours total) and
4 hours of homework
– Training utilizes variety of adult learning principles
• National Advocacy Credentialing Program® (NACP)
approved training

Training Overview
• NVAA provides comprehensive overview of five core
topics:
– Trauma of Victimization
– Crisis Intervention
– Role of Advocate/Case Management/Vicarious Trauma
– History of Movement/Victims’ Rights/Criminal Justice
System
– Ethics/Cultural Sensitivity
• Training facilitated by nationally-recognized Subject Matter
Experts (SMEs)

Participant Responsibilities
• Attend four (4) hours of live weekly training
• Complete all homework assignments by assigned date
– Be prepared! Each week 4-5 students will be
randomly called upon to provide feedback on
assigned homework
• Take Pre/Post-Test
• Complete Weekly Training Evaluations
• Participate! This is an interactive course where
instructors will routinely ask for your feedback!

Participant Responsibilities
• Attending the live class is mandatory!
• You may miss only one (1) class due to an
emergency/illness/unanticipated conflict and graduate on
time

know you will miss class
– Mandatory make-up assignment will be provided
