Novated Leasing Guide 2017
fleetautonews.com.au
After 20 years in fleet leasing and management I’m still amazed at the general lack of understanding about the financial savings a novated lease can provide.
I’ve come to the conclusion that its the complex nature of PAYG, GST and FBT that creates the benefit, and at the same time stops people from investigating further. Its also because the savings seem too good to be true. And as the old saying goes ‘If it looks too good, it probably is’.
But the savings available through novated leasing are real.
To explain the complexities this guide contains several articles covering the basics of novated leasing through to more complex issues such as FBT, ECM and luxury vehicles.
It also provides a list of vehicles to help you with your initial investigation when considering a number of vehicle finance options. The data on each vehicle is not comprehensive. It’s a sample of the information you’ll see on a novated leasing quote and highlights the financial savings that are available.
There’s a broad range of vehicles with an indicative monthly lease rental on each one. This is because most of us desire cars that are beyond our financial reach, when looking at the initial purchase price, though when presented as fixed monthly cost you may be able to put the one you want in your driveway.
If you are considering a novated lease now or in the future this guide is for you. It shows the key financial components you should consider in the process of selecting the right vehicle for your lifestyle, family size or stage in life.
The guide is also for the person within an organisation that gets asked all the car questions. It may be the fleet manager or in 2017 it could be Human Resources, Finance or Procurement. If this is you, please share this guide with your colleagues to help them better understand the benefits and vehicle affordability offered through a novated lease.
If nothing else, this guide can be used to dream about the car you would own if money was no object.
Regards,
Marc SibbaldFleet Auto News
How does that work
Oh, that sounds good but is it legal?
By paying for the car from my salary before it is taxed, it
ends up saving thousands.
It is totally legal. I checked out

Can you see yourself behind the wheel of a Pathfinder?
Your employer can.
Did you know your employer can help you get into a brand-new Nissan Pathfinder? When you salary sacrifice a Nissan with your employer you’ll see that combining the potential for tax minimisation and
Nissan’s novated pricing will exceed your expectations.

#So just what is novated
leasing? When you hear the term salary packaging, it usually means your company is offering you a way to get your car financed through a scheme called novated leasing.
Don’t be put off by the term. Novated just means that one party to a contract is substituted for another. Put simply, it means the company you work for agrees to pay the lease and take the money out of your salary. Doing it this way reduces the amount of tax you pay.
Novated leasing is a legal tax deduction available to any employee.
More and more employers are offering it; more and more employees are taking it up.
The sales pitch says everyone can save money with a novated lease. And in most cases it’s true, but you need to take the time and do some research first.
The savings come from a combination of reduced taxable income (this is a key part you need to understand), buying power and GST input tax credits being claimed by the financier.
The best way to learn more is to Google “novated leasing”. From a quick search you’ll find some simple tools and explanations to answer all your questions.
If you still have questions talk to someone in human resources. They should be able to point you in the right direction.
What are you waiting for?
It’s legal, it saves money, and best of all
you are going to get the car you thought you
couldn’t afford. Congratulations!

# Why not just buy a car?
Are you planning to buy a car? Do you already own a car? What does it cost to run?
The good news is you could end up with more dollars in your pocket if you get a novated lease compared to owning it yourself. It’s true!
You don’t need to earn a fortune to save money.
All you need to do to take advantage of this legal (and easy) way of reducing your tax bill is to work for a company that offers it as a benefit. And if they don’t, think about changing jobs!
So what’s the difference between owning and a novated lease? The first thing is the running costs are paid from your salary before the tax is taken out. This reduces your income which also reduces the tax you pay.
What do we mean by running costs? Well the obvious one is fuel. You also have servicing, finance costs and insurance. When they are included in the lease the financier claims the GST input tax credit which is like you getting a 10 percent discount.
Sure it’ll take some time to get your head around the benefits. But do the research. Take the time and you’ll thank us.
There’s plenty of information online, including calculators that will detail the savings. Just Google “novated leasing” and start from there. Or talk to your HR people.

#Structure your novated lease
the ECM wayIf you go sailing or play any sport, you have to learn new words, acronyms and rules. Taking up novated leasing is just like that – it has its own codes. One key acronym is ECM. It stands for Employee Contribution Method.
It’s very good to understand this, because it refers to a particular way of structuring a novated lease to get the max tax advantage. It’s about the difference between the rate of tax you pay on your income and the one set for fringe benefit tax.
Getting your head around it, and making sure it’s how your novated lease is structured, may help you save hundreds or thousands of dollars a year.
The benefits of the novated lease are essentially financial.
Using the ECM method is one of the key avenues to getting the best value out of the arrangement.
The Australian Tax Office provides examples on its website of how the FBT component can be reduced to nil when an employee makes contributions from their after-tax income in salary packaging arrangements with their employer.
Remember, FBT applies to 20 percent of the value of the vehicle.
The ECM method means an employee can pay the equivalent of an FBT liability at their marginal income tax rate rather than the FBT rate -- equal to the highest income tax rates. It usually means more dollars in your pocket rather than the tax man’s because most of us aren’t in the salary bands that get hit with the higher rates of income tax.
it’s just that if we buy the car outright we don’t pay FBT, but I do have to pay it if I take up this novated lease salary packaging offer.
I hate talking about
TAX stuff. Do we have to?
. It’s definitely going to save thousands
a year taking up the salary packaging offer to get my
new car.
Well I guess it doesn’t matter what the name of the tax is, it just depends on what the best outcome is in the end.
We’ll take good care of you and your new ‘baby’ for the life of your lease*. You won’t need to worry about a thing, simply tell us what car you would like to drive and we’ll take it from there.
We’ll find the car with the specs you request, negotiate the best deal, complete the paperwork, arrange the lease, organise registration, insurance and delivery. All the hard work is done for you while you just need to sign and send back your lease!
And we don’t stop there. Everything you need to run your car is wrapped up into one neat little bundle of monthly payments including annual registration, insurance, accident management, servicing, maintenance and even fuel† - part of which can be taken from your pre-tax salary reducing your taxable income^.
Sit back and enjoy the ride.
Your new bundle of joy delivered worry free... for the life of the Novated Lease*.

#What about the Fringe
Benefits Tax?You may not be an accountant, but you need to know about Fringe Benefit Tax (aka FBT) and how it applies to a novated lease.
FBT applies to many non-cash benefits an employee gets from their employer, such as entertainment, living-away-from-home expenses, and the private use of a company-owned car.
The Australian Tax Office says that “a benefit” arises when a work vehicle is used for private travel by an employee.
You’ll be using your novated lease vehicle for private trips (because that’s what we do with cars) so you’ll be getting “a benefit” which will attract FBT.
If you start talking about FBT everyone’s either an expert, or an ostrich with their head in the sand. That’s because the calculation sounds complicated and varies depending on the type of organisation you work in.
And the formula has changed in recent years to make it easier. It’s now flat rate compared to the old days when you needed to drive thousands of kilometres every year just to pay less FBT.
For the detail orientated people you can get the what, why and how from the ATO website.

MEANWHILE BACK ON THE LOUNGE
I wonder if I can
get the luxury car I’ve always dreamed of and still get tax deductions through salary packaging.
You better check it out. Surely, there’s some limits to this scheme.
You’re right. There are
limits. Cars worth more than $64,132 are considered luxury and
different rules apply.
what does that mean?
the tax arrangement isn’t
as good as if it were a standard
vehicle.
Can you drop some of the optional extras like the tow ball and driving lights and get it to come in under $64,132?
#Can I buy luxury vehicles?
Are you looking to buy a car that is worth more than $64,000? If so, there are some special rules in regards to tax and novated leases that you need to consider.
The Australian Tax Office regards any passenger vehicle with a purchase price of $64,132 or more as a “luxury” vehicle. In 2017 that’s not a lot of car.
For those who consider the environment with every purchase the threshold is $75,526 for fuel-efficient cars (those with a fuel consumption of seven litres per 100 kilometres or less).
So if you were looking at a BMW M3 or Porsche 911 as a novated lease option you may need to do a little more research because lots of things change once the purchase price soars above $64k.
Once a vehicle is deemed “luxury” the financier is limited to the amount of GST credits they can claim and lease payments on luxury vehicles aren’t fully tax deductible. This changes the way savings are calculated compared to buying the car yourself.
For more details you can get the what, why and how from the ATO website.

# Why is it called a novated lease?
This is because of the special three way agreement between the employer, employee and leasing company. The document used to formalise this agreement is called a novation agreement.
A novation agreement is a common legal document used when assigning responsibilities (i.e. payment of your lease by your employer to the leasing company) to a third party.
# Where do the annual savings come from?
The savings come from a reduction in the initial purchase price through buying power and from not paying GST. There are also savings in fuel, maintenance and tyres (once again not paying the GST). And the last component of the savings comes by using pre-tax salary.
# What’s the difference between Recommended Retail Price
(RRP) and on-road cost?
RRP retail is the manufacturer’s listed price for the vehicle only. The on-road cost includes registration fees, purchase stamp duty and dealer delivery costs.
# Why is there a difference between on-road cost and
amount financed?
The on-road cost is what you would pay when buying the vehicle yourself. The amount financed is the total on-road vehicle cost with a novated lease.
It’s lower because there is no GST and some vehicle manufacturers recognise novated buyers as a fleet buyer. So they
provide extra discounts that may not be available to a retail buyer. The leasing companies also negotiate lower dealer delivery charges and extra discounts.
# Do you have to drive high kilometres to benefit from a
novated lease?
No. Even employees driving less than 7,000 kilometres per annum can benefit.
# What happens if I change employers?
Here are some of the options if you leave your current employer but you should also check with your current provider.
Organise a new novated lease with your new employer through their preferred provider.
Continue to pay your lease payments and all running costs to the leasing company until the end of the lease.
Pay out the lease by selling or purchasing the vehicle.
# Can I get a novated lease on a used or demonstrator
vehicle?
Yes. Each leasing company has different restrictions on the age of used vehicles that can be financed so you need to check first. But if you’re buying a young, low kilometre car there should be no issues. You could also lease the vehicle currently parked in your driveway.
There are plenty of other questions to be answered and that’s where a specialist can help. Contact one of the advertisers in this guide, or your organisation’s preferred provider.

Fleet Auto News does not accept any liability to any person or entity for any information or any advice which is provided in this guide or incorporated into it by reference. The information provided is on the basis that anyone reading it undertakes the responsibility for assessing the relevance and accuracy of its content. The data and figures provided in this guide are not intended as financial or taxation advice. People reading the guide should obtain a formal quotation from a novated leasing provider and seek independent financial advice before entering into a novated lease agreement. All efforts have been made to display the right images for each model variant but they may not be correct for each vehicle. The images are to be used as a guide only.
* The calculations were obtained from http://www.orix.com.au/novated-leasing/calculator.html during December 2016 and January 2017. For more details information on the assumptions used during the calculations visit http://www.orix.com.au/novated-leasing/calculator-terms-and-conditions.html Using the ORIX Novated Calculator Fleet Auto News applied the following assumptions. A three year lease term travelling at 15,000 kilometres per annum for an employee earning $80,000 annually. † 4X4 UTE. Novated leases are for cars. Station wagons, panel vans and utilities are considered cars by the ATO if they are goods-carrying vehicles designed to carry less than one tonne. If a vehicle is designed to carry a load of one tonne or more it may not be eligible for a novated lease. This will impact some of the calculations and the potential savings available when salary packaging a vehicle. Readers should seek independent financial advice. Also some employers may not allow 4X4 Utes in a novated lease. ‡ Luxury Vehicles. When the Amount Financed is greater than the 2016/17 annual vehicle depreciation limit of $57,581 it will be regarded as a loan instead of a lease. So the depreciation and interest will be tax deductible rather than lease payments. This will impact some of the calculations and the potential savings available when salary packaging a vehicle. Readers should seek independent financial advice. Also some employers may not allow luxury vehicles in a novated lease.
