DEAR NOVATO BABE RUTH FAMILIES,
Welcome to the Novato Babe Ruth 2011 Season! Finally, the rain has stopped and Spring is here. This can only mean that it is time for baseball. We are looking forward to a fun-filled, spirited season of baseball.
Our league provides a competitive baseball program to 150 families primarily based in Novato. The ages of our players range from 13 (middle school age) to 15 (high school age.) Players start in our league rather small in height and weight and by the time they are playing as 15 year olds, they are almost full grown. It is interesting to watch when a 13 year old bats against a 15 year old 6-foot pitcher. This is the excitement of Babe Ruth baseball. We are fielding 10 teams this season, most with returning managers and coaches. All of our coaches have amazing experience and are very excited to help their players advance their skills.
We are excited to have new bleachers for Sinaloa Middle School and new website. As we did last year, we have worked on the dugouts at San Jose field and have replaced large portions of our infield sod. The money for these modernization projects come from our generous league sponsors. Thank you for keeping our program strong!
A special thanks goes out to Mike Testa for meticulously maintaining our fields, by enduring endless hours of mowing, seeding and overseeing the watering for both the San Jose and Sinaloa fields. In addition, Mike spearheaded the bleacher negotiation between the Novato Unified School District and San Marin High School. He also creates our games schedules for pre-season and our regular season. Mike has been with Novato Babe Ruth for over ten years. His wealth of information and knowledge is a tremendous help to our Board. Thank you Mike Testa!
This year we have recruited three new board members. We are thrilled to have Pam Wycliffe as our Webmaster, Carol Herbstman as our Treasurer, and Jim Treppa as our Fund Raiser Director. Pam has rolled up her sleeves and created a wonderful, clean and user-friendly website. Carol is a true asset to our team with her attention to detail and knowledge of baseball. Jim brings to the board a legal perspective with professional attitude that brings in top quality sponsors. Furthermore, I especially want to thank you 2010-2011 Board Member who have worked so hard in preparing for the 2011 Season.
This year we hope to host the 13-year District old all-star tournament like we did in 2010. This was a great way to show families from visiting Northern California cities what hospitality Novato offers. If Novato Babe Ruth is selected as a 2011 site, we will need volunteers to help run the scoreboard, sound system, field prep, and snack shack during tournaments. If your player would be available to volunteer, or is in need of community service hours, we would welcome the support.
Have Fun and Play Ball!
Sincerely,
Trinidad GarciaPresidentNovato Babe Ruth Baseball

B A B E R U T H L E G A C Y
Of all the players in baseball history, none has ever reached the mythic status of Babe Ruth. Since his death, Babe continues to be formally recognized for his accomplishments. A few examples of the posthumous awards Babe received were The Associated Press's Athlete of the Century in 1999 and The Sporting News' Greatest Player of All-Time. These awards, along with many others, reflect Babe Ruth's prominence as one of the most revered athletes in American History.
• Babe Ruth's career mark of 714 home runs stood as the all-time record for 39 years, until Hank Aaron hit his 715th on Opening Day of the 1974 season.
• Babe Ruth is the only player ever to hit three home runs in a World Series game on two separate occasions-Game 4 of the 1926 Series and Game 4 of the 1928 Series.
• Babe Ruth reached the 500 home run plateau in 5801 at-bats--the second fewest number in history.• Babe Ruth holds the record for the longest complete game victory in World Series history. In 1916, as a
member of the Boston Red Sox, Ruth pitched 14 innings to defeat the Brooklyn Robins. He only allowed one run in the first inning, then settled down to shut out the Robins for the next 13 innings for the 2-1 win. The Red Sox would go on to win the Series in 5 games
• Babe Ruth led the American League in home runs 12 times (1918-1921, 1923, 1924, 1926-1931.)• In 1927, Babe Ruth's 60 home runs accounted for 14% of all home runs in the American League that year. To
put that figure in modern perspective, a player would need to hit over 340 home runs in a season to account for 14% of the American League's total homerun output.
• In the late 1920s and early 1930s, Babe and teammate Lou Gehrig were the most feared hitters in baseball. Remarkably, the dynamic duo combined to out-homer every team in the majors except one in 1927.
• From 1915-17, Ruth won 65 games, the most by any left-handed pitcher in the majors during that time.• Ruth's career .690 slugging percentage is the highest total in the history of Major League Baseball. (Slugging
percentage is calculated by dividing total bases by at-bats.)• Ruth altered the salary structure of the game - via a trickle-down effect. His highest salary was $80,000
annually in 1930 and 1931. He suffered a $5,000 pay cut in 1932 despite hitting .373, leading the majors in 1931 with a .700 slugging percentage, tying for the lead in homers with 46 and knocking in 163 runs.
• After the Red Sox sold him to the Yankees, Ruth single-handedly outhomered the entire Boston team in 10 of the next 12 seasons

"How to hit home runs: I swing as hard as I can, and I try to swing right through the ball...The harder you grip the bat, the more you can swing it through the ball, and the farther the ball will go. I swing big, with everything I've got. I hit big or I miss big. I like to live as big as I can.”-Babe Ruth
